Emile woke up with the first rays of sunlight. She hummed a tune as she busied herself in the kitchen making breakfast. Her steps were lighter with the joy of determination after a torturous night of self-evaluation and reminiscing. She finished her breakfast and left home without waiting for the Daniel to wake up.
Daniel however was already awake. He lifted his eyebrows curiously as he heard the happy humming coming from outside. But he didnât get up as Michelle was sleeping nestled in his embrace.
Emile first visited her grandfather trusted aide, Lawyer Hee and spent the whole morning discussing and drafting her next steps. In the afternoon she visited grandpa Holston.
âGrandpa, I am here to visit you.â Emile stood at the entrance of the living room after the butler had announced her arrival.
âCome⌠comeâŚ.â Grandpa Holston waved his wrinkled hand as he invited her enthusiastically. Emile walked over and sat next to him with a polite smile âHow are you feeling, Grandpa?â
âAll the more better now that you have come to visit me.â Grandpa Holston laughed as he sized her up but soon stopped laughing. His face turned serious as he looked at the girl in front of him who has lost all her liveliness except for the fake smile which hung on her face. âBut I suppose this is the last time I will see you as my grand daughter-in-law, isnât it?â
He knew⌠he was not some senile old man. He knew very well what his unscrupulous grandson had been doingâŚ. Aha⌠he regretted it⌠he harmed his best friend grandchild.
âGrandpa⌠I âŚ.â Emile suddenly lost all the courage and determination she had worked up all night.
âAi⌠ahaâŚâ Grandpa Holston sighed as he held her hand and gently patted âChild, I have wronged you. I thought my grandson would become enlightenedâŚ. Aaii⌠I have wronged youâŚ. I donât even know what face I have to face my dear Danton⌠He must be jumping around in his graveâŚâ
âChild, I will support what ever decision you have made.â Grandpa Holston looked into her eyes with determination âThat unfilial son of mine doesnât deserve Dantonâs treasure. Forgive this old manâs greed that caused you to suffer.â
âItâs all in the past.â Emile smiled although she couldnât get rid of the sadness in her eyes.
âGrandpa will be your backer.â Grandpa Holston patted her hand as he promised âI and Danton have always been two bodies and one soulâŚ. You will be my granddaughter from now on.â
Emile smiled neither agreeing nor disagreeing. She didnât want to break Grandpa Holstonâs heart by telling him that she didnât want anymore contact with any of them. He was the only person in this house who was truly good to her. Both her in-laws didnât like herâŚ. How could they, when she was the stumbling block in their sonâs happily ever after? There was even less of a chance for Danielâs snobbish vain sister to like herâŚ
Emile spent the afternoon with Grandpa Holston and returned home in the evening. She waited in the living room for Danielâs arrival. He came around 6pm to change his clothes.
âWe need to talk.â Emile opened her mouth as she saw him ignoring her and walking towards the master bedroom.
âI donât have time.â
Emileâs face fell but it was only for a split second before she regained a calm composure âThen make time. This is the last time you have spend time for me.â
Danielâs feet paused before he walked into the bedroom. He needed to change and pick Michelle for the banquet.
âWait.â Emile narrowed her eyes and spoke coldly.
Daniel stopped taken back by her coldness. She had never spoken to him in such a tone, nor had she ever looked at him with such a cold gaze. He didnât even know why he felt stifled in a corner of his heart.
Daniel sat down rudely to hide losing his composure âMake it quick.â
âHere is the divorce agreement.â
âHuh?â
âHehâ Emileâs lips curled up in a self-deprecating smile âToday is our third wedding anniversary.â
Daniel looked like he was a bit lost but it was only for a moment âI needâŚ..â
âNo need.â Emile pursed her lips âIf your decision is to divorce, then sign. I have spoken to Grandpa and he has agreed.â
âYou sure are capable.â Daniel rebuked as he lifted the pen.
âDaniel, I am someone who never looks back and never goes back on my word.â Emile took a deep breath âThis is also why I have never brought this up before no matter how you treated me. I had agreed to three years and that I have kept.â
âBut know this⌠If you sign this paper and leave today, we are strangers from this moment forth and I will never even shed a glance in your direction.â
âHeâŚheâŚheâŚâ Daniel laughed disdainfully as he snorted âYou think too much. I canât wait to never see you again.â He signed the document without any hesitation.
âGood⌠good⌠very wellâŚâ Emile nodded as she suppressed the pain in the heart and spoke in a voice devoid of any emotions âThat brings me to my next question.â
âYou have never taken any protection when you forced me to fulfill my duties as your wife.â Emile struggled to keep her aloof front âWhat if I get pregnant?â
âAbort.â Daniel didnât have to think what to do. He frowned as he realized that they had never taken any precautions and looked at her with a measuring gaze. But he couldnât see anything on her face. It didnât look like anything more than a hypothetical question.
âAnd if I donât?â
âYou donât have a choice. Abort.â Danielâs lips curled in disdain. Now, he was sure. This was a farce she came up with to stop him from divorcing.
âDo you want to take me to court on that?â Emile challenged as her lips curled in ridicule. âThis is my body. I decide what I do.â
âWhether there is a child or not has nothing to do with me.â Daniel smirked as he added âIf you insist, he will be a bastard.â
âHis father isâŚ. But I will make sure he isnât.â Emile narrowed her eyes. She saw the fury gathering in Danielâs eyes and didnât give him a chance to retort; She opened her mouth again âSo you agree that after we sign this divorce, even if there is a child, you have no claim over the child as your decision is to abort the child and his life has nothing to do with you?â
âYes.â Daniel rolled his eyes âGo and have the abortion if you are pregnant.â
âI will decide what I do with my life and body after today.â Emile smiled slyly as she put another sheet of paper in front of Daniel.
âPlease sign this statement as well if you really mean what you said.â
Daniel looked at the paper in confusion but gritted his teeth as he read the contents. It was basically stating what they just said. She was waiting for him here, although he had no idea why.
âSignâ Emile prompted and taunted as she didnât have any confidence âOr what?? Are you regretting?
Daniel signed the paper in a fit of anger and stomped out of the house with a copy of the divorce agreement.
Emile sunk into the sofa sobbing, shedding the façade she was holding onto ⌠to maintain her last bit of dignityâŚâŚ Today was the last day she would cry for this man ⌠today was the last day she would shed tears for her youthâŚ. Today was the last day she would reminisce her lost loveâŚ. Today was the last day she would grief for this âŚâŚ
Daniel got in his car in irritation and flung the divorce agreement application copy in annoyance onto the passenger seat and drove away. He hit the steering wheel in annoyance a few times to get rid of his anger. He had no idea why he was angry. This was what he wanted for the last three yearsâŚ. Now that he had got it without even having to ask for itâŚ. why was he annoyed? He calmed himself down by the time he reached Michelleâs apartment. He rationalized his anger was due to Emileâs arrogance and nothing more. He put the divorce agreement in the dashboard before walking up to pick her.The banquet was for celebrating the fiftieth birthday of one of his business partners who was also his fatherâs friend. Normally people would bring their spouses to such events; but Daniel never bought Emile⌠not even once. Either it was Michelle or one of the models he was having an affair with while Michelle went away. Initially this was the joke of the event and Emileâs status would be the butt of
Daniel woke up disoriented and looked around in haze. He had no idea where he was⌠the last thing he remembered was drinking with Ronald. Looking around he realized that this was rooms upstairs for guests that didnât want to head back.He heaved a sigh of relief as he saw Ronald lying even more wasted on the next bed.âWhat time is it?â Ronald lifted his head lazily as he heard Daniel getting ready.âAround 1 in the afternoon.ââWhat???â Ronald sat up in a flurry.âI will head back home and see what needs to be done.â Daniel tapped his back âYou take your time.âDaniel sat in the car rubbing his forehead He regretted his rudeness yesterday. He took out the divorce agreement from the dashboard to read before going back. There was nothing to readâŚ. he looked at the papers in shock. There were no items listed under divorce settlement. Only a statement âHeaded to the bridge of no return; Strangers forever.âDaniel shook his head in denial before his lips curled in ridicule. He knew how mu
Daniel didnât stay long at Grandpa Holstonâs place as he was in low spirits with the blow that the news of Emileâs departure brought him.Ronald drove while Daniel sat lost in thought on the way back.âWhy did she leave just like that?â Daniel mumbled as he sat in a daze. âWhy would she stay?â Ronald retorted rudely âDid you ever give her a reason to stay in these 3 years?ââHuh?â Daniel turned to look at Ronald feeling lost. He couldnât explain his current state of mind. He should be happy but why did he feel lost?âWhere to?â Ronald drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. He didnât want to pursue this topic. Although he never agreed with what Daniel did over the last three years; he didnât want him to delve into it, especially now that there was no point.âYour apartment or house?â Ronald asked again, since he didnât get a response.âHouse??â Daniel repeated regretfully before asking âDrop me off at my office.âThe âhouseâ Ronald referred to, was the wedding present Grandpa Hols
Emile sat in the airport lounge waiting for her flight. This was the first time in three years that she felt peaceful. She took a deep breath and exhaled ⌠in an effort to exhale the last three years of her life as a bad dream. She didnât want to be resentful; She chose to forget and start anew. That was why she wanted to travel somewhere new⌠somewhere she didnât know anyone. She wasnât running away. She would eventually come back. This is where her most cherished people .. her parents and grandfather rested. She would not give up on them for the sake of someone who didnât cherish her. She needed to heal. She would come back when she was ready to face this place without resentment and regret. âDring⌠dring⌠dringâŚâ Emileâs phone broke the tranquility of the moment. âGirl, where are you?â Abbey screamed as soon as the call was answered. âI am in the VIP lounge of the airport.â Emile responded with a smile as a warm feeling crept up her heart. Some friendships never change. No matte
Emile and Abbey reached their first destination, Mauritius around midday. Having no plan was the best plan. The two best friends decided to chill at the world class hotel they booked into on the first day before getting into touristy mode and booked themselves into an indulgent beauty saloon for a relaxing massage after a sumptuous feast. The next five days were jam-packed with activities starting a luxurious catamaran cruise of the northern islands. Abbeyâs camera lens snapped away at the breath-taking views while Emile immersed herself in the experience. This was her first time travelling away from home, away from comfort zone; She had always lived a protected life with her grandfather and cousins where university was the furthest, she travelled away from home. Every experience was new and invigorating, opening a whole new world, whether it was admiring the vibrant colors of the ocean or the magnificent mountain views or snorkeling at one of the beaches, diving with Emperor Angelf
Michelle came to Daniel's office after shopping to her heart's content and accompanied Daniel outside for dinner to celebrate his freedom. Later she took him to her place and told him that they would stay here for the time being. Daniel didn't have any objections and assumed that she was considering his feelings, knowing that he wasn't ready to go back there. On the fourth day, as Daniel was getting ready to go to work, she informed him that they would move back that day. "Danie Baby, I will pack and move in the afternoon. You should come back early." She twirled her fingers on his chest "I will be waiting." "Why are we moving so soon?" Daniel was stumped. She didn't ask him if he was ready to go back. No matter how you looked at it, he had lived there with Emile for 2.5 years, on their own. Even if he swore, he didn't have any thoughts towards her, he would be lying through his teeth if he said that there were no instances when he wasn't tempted or moved. "Why?" Michelle pouted a
Daniel reached back at the villa around 6pm; The chat with Ron helped resolve his dilemma. He managed to convince himself that he knew what he wanted and there was no need to be confused.Michelle was watching television in the lounge room when he arrived.âYour back.â Michelle smiled happily as she saw him and hopped into his embrace but soon wrinkled her nose âYou drank?ââJust a social meet.â Daniel smiled as he hugged her âWere you borâŚâ He didnât complete what he was about to say as he was shocked by the interior. It had totally changed.âDo you like it?â Michelle smiled mischievously as she looked at his face waiting for his approval. Sadly, the approval never lit up on his face. What Michelle didnât know was that although this was the wedding house that Grandpa Holston gifted Daniel and Emile, Daniel had personally designed it as it was always meant to be his and Michelleâs house in his mind. The only place he asked Emileâs input was the guest bedroom, even the kitchen was desi
The same time, many miles away in Mauritius-Emile, Abbey and Christopher spent the next two days exploring the the magical volcanic rain forest landscapes of southwest Mauritius. Whether it was the Trou Aux Cerfs which is the famous dormant volcano or the Mare Aux Vacoas, a reservoir embedded deep in the forest or the Grand Bassin which is the sacred lake of Mauritius, it was a magical experience for trio. Abbey didnât forget to capture each beauty through her camera lens. Emileâs favourite was the Chamarel waterfall and the 7 coloured earth. While most people in the tour group went for a swim in the pool at the foot of the Chamarel waterfall, Emile sat scribbling her inspirations onto her notepad. Christopher sat by her side accompanying her quietly. Both Emile and Abbey were exhausted after the two-day trip and spent the next day lazily planning what to do next. Christopher left the planning to the ladies and spent the day catching up with all the documents and issues pending at h
âThis has nothing to do with my daddy. We are the ones who bought our mommy back.â Chris Jnr stood tall as he crossed his arms and looked at Grandpa Holston in anger; Emm, too had the same expression, her face red with anger. If it was another occasion, everyone would have laughed looking at the 1-inch dwarfs who were protecting their daddy behind them. âGreat grandpaâŚ. didnâtâŚ.â Grandpa Holston couldnât bear to see the accusatory anger in the eyes of his most precious great grandchildren; he could bear anything; he was ready to bear the curses of the whole world when he decided to close his eyes towards his grandsonâs action, but he didnât factor in his great grandchildren. âYou know what you did.â Chris Jnr retorted without giving him any face; his daddy, mommy and little treasure were his bottom line. âI donât think you want me to glorify it by spelling it out for you.â âBig treasureâŚ.â Chris called out, a restraining command in his tone. âHymph!â Chris Jnr hmphed as he turned
âThe old master Holston is here.â The butler announced breaking Chris and Henryâs stalemate, âCan daddyâs big treasure go and play with the others?â Chris asked in a gentle voice. Big treasure pouted, clearly refusing to walk away as he knew what great grandpa was here for. He hesitated for a minute before resolutely shaking his head in refusal and ditching Chris for the first time since he was born and walked over to take a seat on the sofa all by himself, with his head held high and lips pursed stubbornly. Just as Chris was thinking about how to coax big treasure, he heard another set of tiny steps pitter pattering towards him; his heart literally sank as he turned around to face the culprit. He could face almost anything that life throws at him without batting an eyelid except for these two little ancestorsâŚ. He was bound to be at loss, every single time. âIs little treasure late?â Emm asked Chris Jnr worriedly, without sparing a glance at her daddy and unreliable mommy. âI hea
The rest of Burkes followed suit without waiting for either Chris or Emile to respond; curiosity had gotten the better of them.Little baby was not stupid. How would he dare question little aunt? He looked over nonchalantly before making a gesture with his meaty fingers to indicate payment.âWhat do you want?â Both Harry and Addison asked in excitement.âI am very rich for the time being, so I will let Leo choose.â Little baby responded with a smug look and passed the honours to Leo.âTake us all on the trip to the Alps when fifth Uncle Walter is taking them.â Leo didnât have to think as he told Addison what he wanted.Addison agreed without a second thought and walked back into the room the adults were seated, humming a song only to be despised by his mother, which he totally ignored and sat down happily with a thick skin. The fate of the rest of the Burke brothers were similar; no one was spared. Henry who was complacent looking at the miserable fate of his brothers, got a rude wakeu
âWhere are you going?â Henry teased as he caught the little overlord and hurled him in the air.âPut me down.â Bruno frowned, flailing his legs anxiously âI havenât finished discussing with little uncle.âEveryone laughed as Henry put Bruno down, who promptly ran to Chris, looked up at him curiously, awaiting his decision.âHurâŚhurâŚhurâŚ.â Chris chuckled âHow would I dare renegade on a promise to our little overlord?ââThen when can we go?â Bruno asked seriously, taking no offense to the title, to him, this was recognition of his ability.âWhen we get back and whenever you say the word.â Chris never had any qualms indulging his nephews and nieces.âWhere are we going?â Leo asked curiously.Bruno looked towards Chris who shrugged âItâs up to to the owner of the reward to decide, I am just the charioteer.ââThen letâs go to the ocean kingâs castle.â Bruno didnât have to think twice to make a decision.Chris ââEveryone burst out laughing, only the little ones looked curiously at Chris.âI
He was smart enough to decipher big treasure's cryptic message that he could find the answer by testing them himself, after sulking for a while, thinking about big treasureâs words over and over again. He rushed to Chrisâs room once again, pulled Big Treasure aside and whispered hurriedly before running away. He then ran off to the apartment where the Burkes where resting. He went over to call Leo and Liam to play with him in the backyard with a crafty look in his eyes. All the Burke kids followed Leo and Liam to play, the main intent for the older kids following them was to keep them safe.He turned around to look at Leo with a guilty look in his eyes as he asked cautiously, âWould you stop talking to me if you find out that I landed you in trouble to test you?ââWhy do you want to test me?â Leo demanded with a frown.âBecause it is very important to me.â Bruno blinked his eyes, lowering his gaze as he whispered, âLike life and death situation that grown-ups talk about.ââWell, in tha
After the excitement died down, everyone decided to go out, sight-seeing, like proper tourists. Adam invited his friends who politely stayed back at the hotel sensing that Adam and the rest had family matters to sort out, to join the group. Just like that, the Burkes, Walters, Adamâs three friends, the two masters, Chrisâs senior brother, Bai-Min and Lai-Li set off on their wild-life adventure, that they had booked with one of the tour groups. It goes without saying that the group included Adrian and his little family and Neil who dragged Chiara along with him. What was unexpected was that Emm pulled Amy, Abbeyâs assistant to tag along with them. Luckily for Amy, she had Beth who got dragged into the family outing by Marcus to keep her company. Her boss had ditched her without a conscience the minute her âknight in shining armourâ appeared. On their return trip, even though they were all chatting, what attracted everyoneâs attention was little treasureâs soft cute voice âDaddy, is it
The next morning, everyone was in high spirits without even a trace of the anxiety that passed through; although they were still waiting for an explanation, a closure to whole saga. The breakfast table was lively and cheerful. âSon, tell me is Emile really pregnant?â Elizabeth couldnât hold herself back anymore. She asked once everyone had settled in the lounge area to relax after breakfast. âUmâ Chris nodded although he was displeased inwardly; he wondered if his mother had truly changed or whether she was about to revert to her old ways. âTell us how you know what was wrong with Little aunt.â Miles piped in from the background, turning everyoneâs attention towards big treasure and little treasure, after being signalled by Marcus. He didnât know why eldest brother wanted him to divert the topic, but he still obeyed. He didnât always have to know the reason; eldest brother was in charge; he would follow whatever eldest brother asked him to do. âDaddy was too lost. We knew we had to
Outside the room, Chris Jnr finally managed to coax little treasure and sighed in relief. There was nothing he could do about it, his little ears and heart hurt from listening to little treasureâs wails. He would compensate his little brother in other ways. âHow is your mommy?â Chris asked once little treasure had been coaxed. âShe is fine.â Chris Jnr thought for a minute before answering; his mommy looked fine, she was sleeping peacefully. He leaned forward, close to Chris, gesturing little treasure to come close and whispered with a soft voice âDaddy, I touched a dragon.â âA what?â Little treasureâs eyes widened, surprise mixed with disbelief, reflecting in those adorable eyes. âUmâ Chris Jnr nodded with all seriousness in affirmation to little treasure but not before he gestured little treasure to be quiet. âDaddy, are dragons real?â Little treasure leaned even closer as she whispered. âMaybeâŚâ Chris shrugged before closing his eyes and mind linking with the two treasures âDa
âJnr might be a good option.â Chrisâs master slowly opened his mouth once he finished sifting everyoneâs faces through his mind.Hua Yueren lifted his eyebrows questioningly.âHe has been around her while she was away. Naturally, the apparition although only a figment of Azureâs consciousness, it will still be sharp enough to sense a friend from a foe. Also, since he is her biological son, his spirit must have a lingering smell of her essence.âHua Yueren nodded; he didnât have any better solution. They would re-think their plans if this one backfired.Chrisâs master transmitted his message to Spector who promptly brought Chris in, in his usual manner of teleportation.Chris Jnr greeted the two masters and stood straight, neither servile nor overbearing, quietly waiting instructions; his demeanour brought a glint of admiration to the eyes for both men.âSon, can you see the apparition surrounding your mother?â Chrisâs master knelt beside Chris Jnr so that he could level his gaze with h
