Daniel got in his car in irritation and flung the divorce agreement application copy in annoyance onto the passenger seat and drove away. He hit the steering wheel in annoyance a few times to get rid of his anger. He had no idea why he was angry. This was what he wanted for the last three years…. Now that he had got it without even having to ask for it…. why was he annoyed?
He calmed himself down by the time he reached Michelle’s apartment. He rationalized his anger was due to Emile’s arrogance and nothing more. He put the divorce agreement in the dashboard before walking up to pick her.
The banquet was for celebrating the fiftieth birthday of one of his business partners who was also his father’s friend. Normally people would bring their spouses to such events; but Daniel never bought Emile… not even once. Either it was Michelle or one of the models he was having an affair with while Michelle went away. Initially this was the joke of the event and Emile’s status would be the butt of it…. but over time no one mentioned Emile.
Normally if someone asked him if he was dating the person with him, he would gladly divulge but today, he didn’t know why he was annoyed. He made a reason that he wasn’t feeling well to leave early and dropped Michelle at her place. He didn’t know why, but he didn’t even accept her offer to go back and take care of him.
He didn’t go back home either. He drove to Devil’s den which was his normal hangout place and called his best friend Ronald to give him company.
Daniel had already emptied 2 bottles by the time Ronald arrived.
“Hoo… hoo… someone’s celebrating….” Ronald cheered as he sat down “To what are we celebrating?”
“My freedom.” Daniel smirked as he raised his third bottle and downed it without a word.
Ronald knitted his brows as he looked at Daniel. He didn’t look happy although he said he was celebrating. He pulled the bottle out of Daniel’s hand “Stop…. Tell me what this is about?”
“Freedom… what I wanted and waited for 3 whole bloody years.” Daniel snorted as he pulled the bottle back and continued drinking.
“Why don’t I feel the joy?” Ronald retorted as he lifted a bottle to pour some wine for himself.
They both drank in silence for a while before Daniel opened his mouth “This is what I want…. But why am I not feeling well?”
“Maybe you don’t want this…. maybe you like her.” Ronald shrugged as he tried to reason.
“No… I don’t…” Daniel refused without even thinking “I don’t like her. I like Michele. I hate her… It’s because of her that I almost lost Michele.”
“Is it?” Ronald perked his eyebrows.
Daniel looked on in confusion.
“Let me ask you something else.” Ronald tried to reason differently “Have you ever thought of why your Grandpa is so dead against you marrying Michelle and forced you to marry and stay married for 3 years?”
“Because he is an old dictator.” Daniel snorted childishly.
“Then has he ever imposed any of his interests or likes on you before?”
“Huh?”
“I used to envy you.” Ronald shook his head helplessly “Even when your parents forced you to do things, your grandpa would rally behind you like a blind devotee. Do you know the remember of times I wished for that?”
Daniel wrinkled his forehead and curled his lips in confusion before continuing to drink.
Emile woke up with a rare smile on a face, one that had not been seen in the last three years. She felt like she was reborn without the weight of the emotional burden she carried for the last three years.
She hurried to the office of registry for marriage and divorce once she packed her bag. First, she stopped at Lawyer Hee’s office and gave his the paper that Daniel had signed relinquishing his right as the father if there was a baby as result of their marriage.
“Uncle Hee, would you be able to get it approved by the court today?” Emile bit her lips in hesitation.
“Ahai….” Lawyer Hee shook his head in regret “That kid is going to regret it.”
“Uncle….” Emile pouted urging him.
“Um…” Lawyer Hee nodded “I will call in a favor. Wait for me.”
“Thank you, Uncle.” Emile smiled sweetly “I have to go to the registry as well. I will come back for the good news.”
“Child, how long has it been since I saw your sweet smile.” Lawyer Hee shook his head regretfully before nodding “I will definitely have it ready before you are back.” He got up to follow her out and head to court.
The process at the registry was straightforward other than the wait since it was a public office. Since it was a mutual application there were no problems. Emile came out the registry holding two divorce certificates. It would be a lie to say that she was not sad… a stream of tears rolled down her cheeks. Today she was officially all alone in this world. She was sad… but also relieved. It would also be a lie to say that there was no anticipation.
“Here I come.” Emile took a deep breath turning her head to the sky after exhaling all her sadness.
She took out her phone and send the first message to her best friend, Abbey “Today, I have regained my freedom.” Actually, it was the only message. She didn’t have anyone else to tell. She had cut off contacts with all her colleagues and friends previously as Daniel did not allow her.
Lawyer Hee was waiting for her when she arrived. Again, there were no issues and delays since it was voluntary relinquishment. Again, she collected 2 copies of the original verdict and went back home after bidding farewell to Lawyer Hee. Both of their eyes misted as they didn’t know if they would meet again.
Emile didn’t waste any time as she returned home and packed her bags. She didn’t take anything that came as part of the marriage. Not even clothes or jewelry that Daniel or Grandpa Holston bought her. She left the divorce certificate, the court approval of voluntary relinquishment, wedding ring and house keys on the table in the living room before walking out with her bags.
Abbey’s call came through as the taxi driver was loading her bags.
“GIRL..WHAT THE HELL?” Abbey screamed through the phone.
“I got divorced.” Emile spoke calmy.
“Scum…” Abbey cursed before asking “Did he throw you out?”
“I didn’t give them the chance.” Emile smiled serenely “I got him to sign yesterday and did the procedures today.”
“God… omg… you mean….” Abbey was shocked “You mean…” She knew Emile’s love for Daniel. Who would suffer this long?
“Yes.” Emile leaned back against the head rest with her eyes closed “It is time to let go.”
“Yes…. go girl.” Abbey cheered happily “I am so happy for you. You should have left the scum ages ago.”
“Where are you now?” Abbey asked as she realized the intensity of what she just heard.
“Do you want me to come over?”
“No need.” Emile rejected without thinking “I am heading to the airport.”
“WHAT…” Abbey screeched.
“I need fresh air and fresh start.”
“Yes… yes…” Abbey agreed readily before asking “When are you flying out? Where are you going? I will come with you.”
“No need.” Emile rejected her again “You have your life. I will call when I have settled.”
“When are you flying?”
“Evening.”
“Okay.” Abbey cut off hurriedly. Emile didn’t think much. She wasn’t thinking at all was the truth.
Abbey typed her resignation in a flurry and rushed over to the chief editor’s cabin.
“Sir, I would like to resign with immediate effect.” Abbey stood in front of Samuel with a flustered face.
“Woah…. Woah….” Samuel looked up in shock “Girl don’t you know to be gentle when blasting a bomb?”
“Sit down… tell me what’s wrong?”
Abbey sighed as she sat down and explained how her best friend was going through a hard time and going travelling. She wanted to go and support her.
“Why don’t I hold your resignation for now and re-assign you a travel blog assignment?”
“Really???” Abbey jumped up in joy… She loved her job and the place she worked. If it was not for Emile, she would never have thought of resigning.
“Really.” Samuel smiled in relief.
“Oh… you are the best.” Abbey ran upto Samuel and hugged him in excitement.
“Go pack your bag and leave. Don’t bother me.” Samuel shoo-ed her pretending to be annoyed although there was a big smile hanging on his face.
Daniel woke up disoriented and looked around in haze. He had no idea where he was… the last thing he remembered was drinking with Ronald. Looking around he realized that this was rooms upstairs for guests that didn’t want to head back.He heaved a sigh of relief as he saw Ronald lying even more wasted on the next bed.“What time is it?” Ronald lifted his head lazily as he heard Daniel getting ready.“Around 1 in the afternoon.”“What???” Ronald sat up in a flurry.“I will head back home and see what needs to be done.” Daniel tapped his back “You take your time.”Daniel sat in the car rubbing his forehead He regretted his rudeness yesterday. He took out the divorce agreement from the dashboard to read before going back. There was nothing to read…. he looked at the papers in shock. There were no items listed under divorce settlement. Only a statement “Headed to the bridge of no return; Strangers forever.”Daniel shook his head in denial before his lips curled in ridicule. He knew how mu
Daniel didn’t stay long at Grandpa Holston’s place as he was in low spirits with the blow that the news of Emile’s departure brought him.Ronald drove while Daniel sat lost in thought on the way back.“Why did she leave just like that?” Daniel mumbled as he sat in a daze. “Why would she stay?” Ronald retorted rudely “Did you ever give her a reason to stay in these 3 years?”“Huh?” Daniel turned to look at Ronald feeling lost. He couldn’t explain his current state of mind. He should be happy but why did he feel lost?“Where to?” Ronald drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. He didn’t want to pursue this topic. Although he never agreed with what Daniel did over the last three years; he didn’t want him to delve into it, especially now that there was no point.“Your apartment or house?” Ronald asked again, since he didn’t get a response.“House??” Daniel repeated regretfully before asking “Drop me off at my office.”The “house” Ronald referred to, was the wedding present Grandpa Hols
Emile sat in the airport lounge waiting for her flight. This was the first time in three years that she felt peaceful. She took a deep breath and exhaled … in an effort to exhale the last three years of her life as a bad dream. She didn’t want to be resentful; She chose to forget and start anew. That was why she wanted to travel somewhere new… somewhere she didn’t know anyone. She wasn’t running away. She would eventually come back. This is where her most cherished people .. her parents and grandfather rested. She would not give up on them for the sake of someone who didn’t cherish her. She needed to heal. She would come back when she was ready to face this place without resentment and regret. “Dring… dring… dring…” Emile’s phone broke the tranquility of the moment. “Girl, where are you?” Abbey screamed as soon as the call was answered. “I am in the VIP lounge of the airport.” Emile responded with a smile as a warm feeling crept up her heart. Some friendships never change. No matte
Emile and Abbey reached their first destination, Mauritius around midday. Having no plan was the best plan. The two best friends decided to chill at the world class hotel they booked into on the first day before getting into touristy mode and booked themselves into an indulgent beauty saloon for a relaxing massage after a sumptuous feast. The next five days were jam-packed with activities starting a luxurious catamaran cruise of the northern islands. Abbey’s camera lens snapped away at the breath-taking views while Emile immersed herself in the experience. This was her first time travelling away from home, away from comfort zone; She had always lived a protected life with her grandfather and cousins where university was the furthest, she travelled away from home. Every experience was new and invigorating, opening a whole new world, whether it was admiring the vibrant colors of the ocean or the magnificent mountain views or snorkeling at one of the beaches, diving with Emperor Angelf
Michelle came to Daniel's office after shopping to her heart's content and accompanied Daniel outside for dinner to celebrate his freedom. Later she took him to her place and told him that they would stay here for the time being. Daniel didn't have any objections and assumed that she was considering his feelings, knowing that he wasn't ready to go back there. On the fourth day, as Daniel was getting ready to go to work, she informed him that they would move back that day. "Danie Baby, I will pack and move in the afternoon. You should come back early." She twirled her fingers on his chest "I will be waiting." "Why are we moving so soon?" Daniel was stumped. She didn't ask him if he was ready to go back. No matter how you looked at it, he had lived there with Emile for 2.5 years, on their own. Even if he swore, he didn't have any thoughts towards her, he would be lying through his teeth if he said that there were no instances when he wasn't tempted or moved. "Why?" Michelle pouted a
Daniel reached back at the villa around 6pm; The chat with Ron helped resolve his dilemma. He managed to convince himself that he knew what he wanted and there was no need to be confused.Michelle was watching television in the lounge room when he arrived.“Your back.” Michelle smiled happily as she saw him and hopped into his embrace but soon wrinkled her nose “You drank?”“Just a social meet.” Daniel smiled as he hugged her “Were you bor…” He didn’t complete what he was about to say as he was shocked by the interior. It had totally changed.“Do you like it?” Michelle smiled mischievously as she looked at his face waiting for his approval. Sadly, the approval never lit up on his face. What Michelle didn’t know was that although this was the wedding house that Grandpa Holston gifted Daniel and Emile, Daniel had personally designed it as it was always meant to be his and Michelle’s house in his mind. The only place he asked Emile’s input was the guest bedroom, even the kitchen was desi
The same time, many miles away in Mauritius-Emile, Abbey and Christopher spent the next two days exploring the the magical volcanic rain forest landscapes of southwest Mauritius. Whether it was the Trou Aux Cerfs which is the famous dormant volcano or the Mare Aux Vacoas, a reservoir embedded deep in the forest or the Grand Bassin which is the sacred lake of Mauritius, it was a magical experience for trio. Abbey didn’t forget to capture each beauty through her camera lens. Emile’s favourite was the Chamarel waterfall and the 7 coloured earth. While most people in the tour group went for a swim in the pool at the foot of the Chamarel waterfall, Emile sat scribbling her inspirations onto her notepad. Christopher sat by her side accompanying her quietly. Both Emile and Abbey were exhausted after the two-day trip and spent the next day lazily planning what to do next. Christopher left the planning to the ladies and spent the day catching up with all the documents and issues pending at h
Christopher sat at his desk trying to calm his mental faculties as he ended the call. He had no idea why Emile wanted to talk but he was sure it wouldn’t be anything good. He hoped that this wouldn’t be the last conversation they had. He didn’t wish for much. He was happy to stand behind and watch her smile. He hoped to heavens that he wouldn’t be denied that right. As he thought of the many reasons for ‘Can we talk’, a face flashed by his mind’s eye. He clenched his fists as he thought of whether the reason was Daniel. Were they going to reconcile? He sighed deeply as his lips curled up in a derogatory smile. Although he felt a painful tug in his heart, he realized that it didn’t matter as long as she was happy!Reigning his thoughts that were racing around like mad horses, Christopher left his room to meet Emile at the Café downstairs as they agreed.Emile was waiting at the café downstairs when Christopher came down.“What’s up?” Christopher asked with a calm and casual façade as h
Chris and Emile made their way through the reception hall, toasting guests at each table, in the order of the closeness of their relationship. Adrian, Neil and Night Wing took their roles seriously as they blocked the drinks for Chris. Emile had her supply of fruit tea that Abbey religiously re-filled for her; No one knew why, nor did they think much into it as this was Chris Jnr’s arrangement.Chris and Emile had just reached the table where Grandpa Holston was seated when Chris Jnr slowly stood up from his seat and walked towards them, holding little treasures hand. The rest, along with Bruno in the lead followed with excitement as they knew that the fun Emm mentioned before was about to start.“Thank you for coming and blessing our special day with your presence.” Chris raised the toast towards Ron and the rest; he didn’t even spare Grandpa Holston a glance. It was not in his nature to grin and bear grievances.“It was our pleasure.” Several associates including Ron hurriedly joine
Chris and Emile moved to the cake-cutting event with the reminder from little treasure. Cake cutting had a little twist, contrary to the norm where the bride and groom feed each other with the first cut, Emile fed the piece she took to Little treasure while Chris fed Big treasure before letting the two treasures feed them.Although it wasn’t planned and neither big treasure nor little treasure were ready for the surprise, both husband and wife knew each other’s thoughts the moment they looked at each other; they didn’t need to plan or coordinate for such flawless action. The action from the duo that followed also wasn’t planned nor coordinated, it was their norm, the duo would always feed daddy and mommy with their little hands in reciprocation from when they were old enough to grasp things. While the shadow guards took it upon themselves to deliver cake to each and every individual that attended the reception, Chris and Emile personally hand delivered the ones for family and relative
Once all the guests were seated comfortably according to their table arrangement leaving the seats in the front vacated for family, Augusta as the coordinator for the wedding, announced the entry of the bride and groom, in all its grandeur while the DJ set the background scores for the romantic entry of the bride and groom.Emile’s favorite symphony floated through the air as she and Chris made their grand entrance, once again wearing a couple set; they had changed out of their traditional wedding attire they wore in the morning to a champagne-colored gown and suit. They walked in, Emile holding onto Chris’s arm with a blissful smile, like a pair of immortals strolling through the mortal realm as they walked through the hall to the center, followed by their little tails also wearing a mini version of their set. The adorable little dolls had their heads held high, a proud smile hanging on their faces as they followed in their parents’ footsteps. The bridal entourage followed behind wit
Everyone went back to their rooms to rest and change before the reception banquet, which was also the continuation of the wedding extravaganza with no expense spared. With all the guests housed in Royal Lux, the hotel was closed to outside business, other than the ones that had a pre-booking and couldn’t be changed to another date.“Where’s Christian?” Daniel turned to question Ceilier as soon as he reached their room; It was not that he didn’t notice that Christian wasn’t with them, but the truth of the matter was that he didn’t get a chance till now.“He went off with the Walters.” Ceilier twisted his lips awkwardly as he replied in a low voice.“That bastard…” Daniel gritted his teeth as he muttered under his breath before turning his attention to Emile. He waved his hand, instructing Ceilier to step down before walking up to Emile and taking a seat facing her.“What’s wrong?” Emile asked in concern as she saw Daniel staring at her with knitted brows.“Nothing ….” Daniel shrugged b
“Senior Master Walter, the ride for returning to the hotel is ready.” One of the shadow guards from the team who were assigned to the Walters and Burkes announced as he stood respectably by Adam’s side.“Um…” Adam nodded as he took the treasures and Bruno with him “Lead the way.” Adam walked forward holding Big treasure and Bruno while Elizabeth held little treasure’s hand. No matter how uncomfortable she was, little treasure put on a brave smile and walked forward, as though she was heading for the gallows. Both Adam and Elizabeth feigned ignorance although they were laughing in their heads; she looked too adorable!Adam purposefully left Little treasure to Elizabeth’s care even though he knew that she would be uncomfortable. His intention was well meaning; to give them a chance to get to know each other better. He just didn’t expect the extent of aversion he saw in little treasure’s subtle actions; there was not just aversion but also fear mixed with guilt which Adam never expected;
The groom kissing the bride, captured in the backdrop of the rising sun, was too magical to say the least; Other than the younger generation of the Burke and Walter household who were causing a ruckus by whistling and cheering, all the other guests were mesmerized by the magical moment that was unfolding before their eyes.“Wow! That was so magical.” One of the guests exclaimed as she turned around with a dreamy expression, stretching her hands; no one could despise her excitement as this was the thought in the hearts of most of the people who came to attend the wedding; the finale of the wedding was too mesmerizing for even the most grounded and rationale minds. They would never forget this magical moment for the rest of their lives; the moment they witnessed nature proclaiming the fulfillment of a man’s undying affection and loyalty; the moment they witnessed the groom and his bride finally attaining their happily ever after, despite all the odds that fate had stacked against them.
“Mommy, you better take care of your man from here on…there's only so much a little girl can do…” Emm’s bell-like voice rang out as she advised seriously forgetting that her mouthpiece was still on “It was hard work, but we got him here for you.”Everyone burst out laughing as they heard the childish reprimand, leading Emm to wince in embarrassment as she hid behind her elder brother biting her tongue.“Uff….uff…” Chris Jnr cleared his throat like a little adult to attract everyone’s attention before he continued “As you have witnessed, our daddy’s journey to his happily ever after has been anything but smooth; whether it was our mommy’s blindness to recognize his unwavering affection and love….”The laughter from the crowd continued while the bride shyly lowered her head, but not without glaring at the flower boy who suddenly became talkative. Emm didn’t have any solidarity with the bride as she covered her mouth and giggled.“or whether it was the judgmental eyes of the world around
“You could never do what he did…”“What did you say?” Daniel asked in shock; he had heard what she said even though it was a whisper; he just didn’t want to believe it. He didn’t want to believe that Emile had recovered her memory. If she didn’t why would she say that?“How can you arrange so many hot air balloons? Such an extravaganza wedding would need the coffers of the king opened.” Emile giggled as she turned around to face him.Daniel stared at her face for a long time trying to make sense, trying to discern if what she said was purely based on the wedding arrangement or whether there was a hidden meaning in them. But before he could process this line of thought, the ceremonial bells rang leading everyone to take a closer look at the hot-air ballon in the center. Although it was one that could hold 35 people, there were currently only about 25 people including the celebrant and his assistant.“That is actually a priest not a celebrant.” One of the guests in Daniel’s basket, who h
Almost all the guests in the hotel woke up in the wee hours of the morning as they had all arrived to participate in the youngest Walter’s wedding. All of them without exception were filled with excitement regardless of the reason for their excitement. No one knew the exact location of the venue, as other than the name, Church in the Sky, Mossel Bay, there were no details of how to get to the venue. All they knew or were told when they asked for location details was that transportation for them to be taken to the venue was arranged for everyone attending the wedding.Cars were lined up one behind the other, at the hotel entrance, picking up the guests as they arrived at the entrance and heading for the venue. Daniel, Emile and Christian lined up at the back of the line as they arrived.“What are you looking for?” Emile asked in confusion as she saw Daniel looking around.“Grandpa is here too. I was looking to see if he was around.” Daniel shrugged “He could come in the same car as us.
