Chapter 2

Nyx’s POV

I lean back in my leather upholstery chair, ignoring the messages that keep popping out on my phone. I know what these messages are about, the mating party. Yes, my pack members are having fun at the mating party, here I am in the office, working on pack affairs and preparing for a meeting. And I totally enjoy being fully devoted to the development of the pack as the alpha. I mean it.

My phone rings. It’s a call from the Beta Duke. I know exactly why he makes this call.

“Hello, and no.” My attitude is very clear.

“Nyx, are you sure you don’t want to join us at the party? There’re a lot more young girls here than last year.” Duke’s excited sound can be heard through the phone.

Duke is only twenty, an age excited about everything, especially the mate thing. He stops at nothing helping me find my mate.

“You said young girls.” I put stress on “young”.

“So what? You’re also young.” Duke insists.

I chuckle. I’m thirty years old. As a werewolf, I’m quite young. Technically, I’m still at the beginning of my life. But a thirty-year-old alpha who’s still mateless is very rare. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Does the Moon Goddess forget me?

“Duke, I’m not going to the party. I still have a meeting this afternoon.” I’ve given up all hope of finding my mate. Last year when I joined the mating party, I was already the oldest among them. How pathetic! I’ve tried hard. I never miss a mating party. I should’ve found her as long as she’s not from some remote pack in the Arctic. And here I am, mateless.

“How about you come over and I do your report after the party?” Duke asks.

It doesn’t sound very attractive. I want to reject him, but my wolf thinks differently.

“Yes. Say yes!” Andrew shouts to me.

He’s already mad and doesn’t talk to me because I won’t go to the mating party.

To quote, “Seriously. I have a feeling that we’ll find her at the party!” But Andrews thinks so every time the party comes.

“Or any other thing, just name it. Come on, Nyx! Join the party this one last time!” Duke adds.

“Fine, I’ll be there. But I only stay for one hour.”

I’m mentally prepared that joining the party can be a waste of time. However, as I get closer to the party, something changes sharply in me. I am suddenly restless with accelerated breaths. As an alpha, this seldom happens to me, cuz I’m used to getting everything in control.

“This is a mistake. Maybe we should turn back.” I think to myself.

“Or maybe it’s because our mate is nearby.” Andrew rejects this idea flatly.

I raise my eyebrows. Cuz I feel it too. It’s something I’ve never felt and I can’t describe it with words. But my instinct tells me that it has something to do with mate.

My heart begins to pound quickly. My mate, the most mysterious girl in the world, am I going to meet her and unveil her mystery?

Andrew’s excitement is also beyond words. It’s a moment that both of us have looked forward to for like forever.

I speed up and drive to the party as soon as possible.

We have arrived. I jump off the car and run to the party.

I need to see her now!

I can’t wait any longer!

However, the instant I see her, I stand on the spot, motionless. It’s like when you open a box that you wait for forever and you finally get to open it, it turns out to be the wrong gift.

I’m the one who received the wrong gift from the Moon Goddess

The girl who almost drools over a plate of salmon, is my mate. And she’s a human being.

So this is why I’m mateless until now. My mate is a human being! The huge excitement of finding my mate is dampened by this cold fact.

Werewolves don’t intermingle with human beings. Finding the mate is the most important and exciting thing for us werewolves. But having a human mate means more trouble than happiness.

She turns her head to a girl beside her and tries to talk to her with a smile. Of course, she receives the cold shoulder. She’s a human being.

But she’s cute in her human being way.

I don’t know what the mate bond does to me. My mind has changed drastically within such a short time.

No matter what, she’s my mate. Andrew and I yearn to take her back.

I would think twice if I was in my twenties. But as a mateless werewolf in my thirties, I’m overwhelmed by nature. I walk to her directly, ignoring all the other members who greet me with respect. This human being gets all my attention. I’ll walk to her, tell her I’m his mate, and take her back, that’s it.

But the next second, my hand is grabbed. I stop and frown, wondering who dares to stand in the way and stop me. I turn my head and meet Duke’s curious eyes.

“I’ve found my mate.” I tell him directly.

“Really? That’s awesome! Who’s she?” Duke’s eyes light up.

I point at the girl. Duke’s eyes follow my finger and widen at the next second.

“A human being! Are you serious?” The evident excitement on Duke’s face shifts into concern.

I nod. And I don’t care about his reaction. I walk to her directly.

But Duke stops me soon. I turn back and look at him in confusion.

“What do you want to do? Telling her she’s your mate?” He pulls me to one side and asks in a low voice.

“More than that. I’ll take her away.” I’ve waited for such a long time. I can’t wait any longer.

Duke covers his head and sighs.

“I understand you’re excited, but you can’t just take her away. She’s a human being and she knows nothing about you. At least wait until the party is over.”

Duke’s words help me get back my rationality. If I announce it here and now, she’ll be scared. My pack members will also be astonished. None of them are ready for this. It’s not the right time.

“Right.” I nod. I guess I’ll just walk over and make an impression, but I’ll definitely take her to my pack right after the party.

I walk to her. At least I’ll know her name.
