Chapter 4

"Nothing much. I just got into a fight with a couple of punks harassing a little girl on the way," I said casually, trying to brush it off.

Donna shot me a disapproving look and gently touched my face. "Does it hurt?"

She had completely dropped the cold demeanor from yesterday, which only made me feel guiltier. What was wrong with me? How could I have thought such things about Donna?

"It's fine, really. It doesn't hurt," I said, smiling as I took her hand.

"Still playing tough, huh?"

Donna poked my cheek, making me suck in a sharp breath.

She burst out laughing and said, "Hold on. I'll get some ointment for you."

She rummaged through the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of ointment, carefully applying it to my bruised face.

"Babe, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let my imagination run wild," I spoke softly while looking at Donna.

Her hand paused for a moment, then she continued spreading the ointment as she replied, "Jason, you really hurt my feelings last night."
