I Cannot Marry You
Sebastian’s POV
It took everything in me not to pick up Maria’s father by his neck and shake him. I wondered how he could treat his own daughter so poorly despite seeing how his words hurt her.
I had gotten out of my car to talk about what had happened at dinner and to know why she hadn’t said anything about her relationship to Cassandra.
“Is that really what you came all this way to say? After five years?”
She had looked so broken when she had said those words that anger had coursed through me for her. I knew how it felt to be berated by family so I understood her pain perfectly.
It was honestly for her good she had been disowned by him. Such a selfish bastard didn’t deserve her.
The man looked dejected and stood for a long minute after the elevator doors shut.
Sebastian it is a pleasure to see you. I was hoping we could…”
“Why are you here?” I asked interrupting him.
“Excuse me?”
“Why are you in my fiancé’s apartment building?” I asked again.
He frowned turning red in the face.
“I came to make my daughter see reason. She cannot marry you.”
“You and Cassandra act like it was she who made the decision.” I sneered. “I proposed to her…”
“But you don’t know anything about her. How long have you two...?”
“That is irrelevant to you.” I cut him off. “Besides I would have known way less about Cassandra had I agreed to the engagement.”
“That would have been different.” He argued. “The match between you and Cassandra would have been profitable…”
“I am already marrying Maria. She is who I want.” I stated. “whatever opinions you or my father may have concerning the matter is irrelevant to me.”
“This isn’t a suitable place to discuss this.” He said looking around.
Oh so he realized that?
“Seb…”
“I would advise you take your daughter back to London and focus on seeking investors for your company.”
“I…”
“And one more thing.” I said walking close enough to the man to ensure my point would be well delivered. “If I ever see you around Maria again…”
I didn’t need to complete the threat before he scurried off. I shook my head and stormed off to my car. On nights like this, I would have headed to one of my regular clubs but I decided to head home.
There were too many things for me to pore over that I didn’t want to escape with alcohol.
Maria hadn’t mentioned her sister or the mystery fiancé and even if she didn’t owe me the tales of her past, there were still things that were important I knew.
I sighed.
I had hoped marrying her wouldn’t have come with any other baggage but considering how petty her family was, I couldn’t expect the situation to be remedied so easily.
And her son… my son could be caught in the midst of the fight.
I would need to come up with a strategy to tackle the media outburst that was sure to come but that would only be if I knew the truth of the matter. I would need to ask Maria to face the demons of her past and make her see reason why it was safer if she did so.
I lay back, unable to get rid of my concern for her. She had looked haunted and I understand why she had changed her name and left London. I would have done the same did I not have a penchant for vengeance.
Sleep didn’t come easy but it did eventually and by morning I was ready to tackle the day. I had meetings from morning until noon but I couldn’t complain and strode into my office with purpose, stopping short when I spied the last person I’d want to see on even my worst days sitting on my seat with a bored look on her face.
“My dear son.” She smiled, arms wide. “It’s been an age.”
“Mother.” I frowned. “What do you want now?”
She never showed up unless she was in some sort of trouble as had been her custom since she reappeared when I had been named CEO.
It hadn’t taken much to know she only wanted to reacquaint herself with me because I now had the means to fund her lifestyle.
“That’s no way to talk to your mother, Sebastian.” She pouted. “I thought I raised you better than that.”
“You didn’t raise me.” He corrected, moving to stand by his chair which she was still sat in. “You’re in my chair.”
“It’s so nice I almost don’t want to get up.” She smiled.
“what have you done now?” I asked.
She never stayed this long unless she was in real trouble.
“Nothing.” She answered, rolling her eyes. “I heard my one and only son is getting married from the internet and I wanted to ask why he hadn’t thought to inform me.”
“I would have told you eventually.”
“You and I both know you wouldn’t have.” She scoffed, rising from my seat. “Anyway, I just wanted to inform you that I’m in town and I will be attending the event of the century. You should invite your bride to dinner with us.”
It was my turn to scoff.
I doubted very strongly Maria would agree to another dinner with any member of my family. I hadn’t even told my sister yet but that would be at a much later date.
She never approved of anyone I dated so I didn’t need her snooping around and making Maria uncomfortable. If anyone would see through our deception, it would be Diana.
“Good day, Mother.” I told her.
She rolled her eyes and was off. I was barely settled into my seat when a notification popped up on my phone. It was a text from Maria.
I was surprised to see her name when she wasn’t one to speak to me unless she had something to complain about.
“I cannot marry you”
The Frightening VisitMaria's PoV“Are you sad, momma?” Nathan, my intuitive four year old, asked me this question a second time.I forced a smile on my face and picked him up and kissed all over his face while tickling his body. He loved it when I did that. Then I hugged him tightly and inhaled his baby scent. “Momma is happy, munchkin and momma loves you a lot.”“I ‘ove you too, momma.” He mumbled on my chest with his baby voice.“Momma needs to rest now, baby. You should go play with your toys in the toy room and I will join you when I am done resting, yeah? We'll build a gigantic house this time around.”“Yeah!” He pumped his little chubby hands in the air excitedly and I couldn't help but smile with delight. This is one part of my life that is very much intact and I cherish this part with everything in me.“Emily will take you now, darling. See you later.” I kissed his chubby cheeks and handed him over to his nanny who came in and carried him to his toy room just as Helena came b
Anticipating The StormMaria's POV“Let him in.” I told Helena then rushed to my room to wash my face again, comb my hair out then change from my skimpy gown to a cashmere loungewear set. After checking my appearance in the mirror to be certain that I looked presentable, I headed to the living room where Helena engaged in casual conversation with Sebastian. He stood up immediately I entered and gave me a slow once over, momentarily forgetting that Helena stood close to him.Helena cleared her throat loudly and said “I'll leave you two to talk.” then she exited. We stared at each other quietly for a while but I didn't bother to initiate any conversation not because I was being proud but I honestly didn't know what to say at that point, after the embarrassing stunt I pulled.“I received your message.” Sebastian finally broke the silence.“I know.” was all I could reply.“What changed?” He asked softly.“Look, it was just a momentary thing. I was angry and irritated and for a brief momen
The Expected ArrivalMaria's PoVI looked at the time and smiled when I saw that even the time was on my side, then I leaned back against my sofa and yawned dramatically, almost inelegantly. “This conversation has been enlightening, Sebastian but you know what I just realized?”“What is it?” He asked with a small suspicious smile on his face.He was still unsure but was starting to suspect that I was up to something.“The Boulevard proposal meeting. I just remembered that I have a very important meeting first thing in the morning and I need to go through my proposals again.”Sebastian chuckled as he finally caught on to what I was doing. “I see you are kicking me out.”“Oh, not at all” I feigned regret then gave him my sweetest smile. “Even corporate princesses like me need to go through their proposals again and again then catch some beauty sleep before D-day.”He shook his head in disbelief while smiling then stood up gracefully. “Fair enough. Don't get too comfortable with this win
Whispers In The DarkSebastian's PoVThe beep of my phone distracted me from the document I was working on.‘Where are you? I've got news.’It was a text from Maria, and seeing as she doesn't call or text except it is absolutely necessary, I called her immediately, wondering what the news could be.She picked on the second first dial and repeated. “Where are you? I've got news.”I laughed, catching her excitement and replied. “I am still in my office. You want to come over to share the news?”“Exactly what I had in mind.” She replied excitedly and I wondered what got her all excited. We talked some more as she made her way to my office then after we hung up the call, I texted my secretary to instruct the office assistant to get food from Maria's favourite restaurant.I had watched her media interviews enough to know her favourite food and even her favourite restaurant. My secretary returned with the food just in time for Maria to inform me that she had arrived and soon she was swaying
Facing The DemonMaria’s POV I woke up with a start and wondered where I was for a moment. The scent and everything else felt different from my room. It was until I moved and felt strong, large arms around me that I realized that I was still in Sebastian’s office and that we were lying on the soft bed in his office. “What the hell is the time?” I asked myself and realized that Sebastian and I were in a spoonlike position and he wrapped his arms around me protectively. I listened to his relaxed breathing as he slept but jumped from the sofa when my eyes rested on the timepiece on the wall. “Shit!” I said and he woke up highly alert. “What’s going on, Maria?” “The time.” I said, putting on my clothes in a hurry. He looked at the time and asked. “You want to go home by this time?” “Of course!” I replied, looking at him with unbelief. “Do you want your staff to come in in a few hours and see me leaving your office building with ruffled clothes?” “I’ll take you home.”
A Sinister OfferMaria’s POV Helena and I celebrated and talked about the investment for a while, then we had to prepare for the day. “Hello, momma.” Nathan greeted me with a wide grin when he saw me. I smiled,, thinking about how his grin looked so much like Sebastian’s grin. “Hello, my baby. Did you sleep well?” I asked, then gave him a squeezy hug. “Yes, but I missed you last night.” He said it in his baby accent. “Awww, I am sorry, baby. I will play bricks and castles with you tonight. Do we have a deal?” "Yeahh!” he shouted in delight and ran in circles. “It’s time for your bath, baby, then I will make your favorite waffles and pack your lunch for preschool. How does that sound?” He jumped, then wrapped his chubby arms around my neck and pecked my cheeks. I took him to his bathroom and bathed him, then Emily got him ready for school while I made his food and packed his lunch, then pecked him and prepared for work while he ate. I put on a two-piece corporate out
The Deadly Ultimatum Maria's POV I sat down slowly on my chair and tried to process what happened. “What the hell was that?” I asked myself softly. “Are you certain that this is the kind of life you want to sign up for? You haven't spent a dime from the investment Sebastian sent. You can still send it back.” I picked up my phone to call Sebastian but then I shook my head defiantly and dropped the phone. “I am not some cowering little girl those people think that they can bully to do their selfish bidding. I will see this through to the end and I will prevail.” Shrugging the incident with Sebastian's father off, I focused on disseminating the proceedings of the investment. Soon, my Executive Assistant came back with news. “Every instruction has been carried out, Ms. Belluci and as expected, the news has caused an excited ripple to flow in our company today.” “Good! Schedule a meeting with our top executives in two hours. When you are done, put a call through to our tech ve
The Breaking PointMaria’s POV We got to the hospital and headed inside after Sebastian’s driver got a good parking space in the parking lot. The receptionist informed us that my father had been taken to the ER and then directed us to a private waiting room after writing down my name and contact details. Immediately I entered, I walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out. It depicted a beautiful landscape view of the city but she couldn’t see it because she replayed the events of the day before her eyes. “Maria, you have to take it easy on yourself.” Sebastian advised softly behind her. “I know what you are trying to do but I want you to know that none of this is your fault.” I turned and looked up at him squarely in the face. “You are right and you are wrong. You are right because none of this is my fault. I didn’t force them to show up in my office and throw tantrums. You are wrong because what you think I am trying to do is not what I am doing.” “What
Surprise Wedding Maria's PoV I couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation with Sebastian a few hours before I was discharged from the hospital. Nathan and I had stayed for five days and in all that time, Sebastian had attended to and taken care of us as if he was on some special mission to do so. Immediately after I opened my eye on the first night, he gave me water, called the doctor to examine me and when they were done, he got me food and other essentials and then apologized for how he had behaved in the past weeks. We had talked a lot after that time and I felt relieved to know that my ex-step mother had been arrested alongside Cassandra. I felt bad for Cassandra but she also knew that the consequenced of her actions would come. During one of the conversations, Sebastian informed me that he knew about my pregnancy and also that he was the father and that he wan
Final Crackdown Maria's PoV “Hey! Hey!” Cassandra shouted as the man moved closer to me. “You don’t get to harm her, so go back to your position.” Cassandra moved closer to me and started untying the ropes on my feet. “What are you doing?” The man asked Cassandra. “Dancing on a private jet, what the hell does it look like I am doing?” She replied him rudely as she continued to loosen the rope around my leg. When she was done loosening the rope around me, she stood up and said. “My mother wants me to bring her to the other room. We need to teach her a lesson before we move out.” “But your mother didn’t mention such. I didn’t receive any instruction as such.” The man responded with a deep frown on his face. I could see that he was trying to connect the communication device in his ear.&nbs
Family Reunion Maria’s PoV I woke up with a start, and all that I could hear for a while was my throbbing heartbeat. ‘What is going on? Where am I? How did I get here?’ I asked myself as I looked around the dimly lit room. A subtle movement caught my eye, and I turned to see Nathan lying on the floor beside me. At that moment, a flood of events that led us to this place rushed into my head. The thoughts made me gasp and look around in fear. ‘Oh my god! Have we been kidnapped again? Who brought us here?’ Pulling on strength that I didn’t have for some unknown reason, I moved slowly towards Nathan and shook him softly. “Nate, Nate, wake up baby. It’s momma.” “Momma?” He asked weakly and I saw that his eyes were barely open. “Oh god! What’s going on?” I asked
Shocking News Maria's PoV My body had been feeling funny for a while but I thought that it was probably stress. It was weeks after we came back from the conference in Paris and when I came back, I had more work to do because my company was in the scaling phase. Two days ago, Aiva invited Helena, Nathan and I to breakfast at Ailene's penthouse. It was a beautiful time but I became sick again when I got home. Helena suggested that I go to the hospital and see a doctor but I refused because I already suspected why I was feeling sick. After we left the house in the morning, I dropped Nathan off at school, visited the nearest pharmacy to pick up the equipment that would confirm or refute my suspicions. After that, I texted Helena to come straight to my office because I had something important to show her. I waited for Helena to come to my office before taking an
Girl Time Aiva's POV I smiled when I heard Maria's hearty laugh as she listened to Ailene's joke. Helena was at the other end fixing Nathan's buttons which had come off while he was playing around with the huge toy car that Sebastian had bought for him while he stayed here with Ailene and I. Upon my request, they had visited a few days after they returned from the conference that took place in Paris. “Here you go. Breakfast is ready, everyone.” I dropped the full jug of juice on the table that was already filled with a variety of food and wine. I also instructed the maid to take Nathan to the smaller table nearby and feed him because I was certain that me and the girls may have adult conversations. “Mom, I told you that Maria also saw the man with the huge jacket. He gave everyone a good laugh during the conference.” Ailene turned towards me with laug
HelVINI Helena's POV I couldn't get over the excitement and joy when Maria was given an award after her speaking session. When she got to her seat, she texted me to meet her in the bathroom and while there she cried until she was too tired to, then I reworked her makeup. By the time the conference was over, she was exhausted and wanted only her bed. Ailene bought her food and escorted her to the penthouse. “Helena Montoya, I look at you and Maria Bellucci and I can't help but see two very phenomenal women charting paths in their various fields.” Vini had nothing but praises for me and Maria when we settled down for dinner after the conference. “Thank you, Vini.” I gave the wickedly handsome man a bright smile. “Where's Maria?” Vincenzo asked, looking up from his phone for the first time since we sat at the table “Maria was a little tired after the conference so she called it a night early.” “And we all leave Paris tomorrow morning.” “Yeah. We leave first thing in
Flowery Moments Maria's POV My heart banged wildly as I rushed back to my penthouse after exiting Sebastian's room thinking that I would turn around and see him coming after me. “How could you do that, Maria? Come on, how could you do that?” I repeated to myself over again as I walked back. My body still trembled from Sebastian's touch and longed for it but my brain was seriously beating my body for betraying us. How could I just jump into bed with him after months where he ignored me and didn't even care one bit? How could I just jump into his bed after the naughty tantrum-like behaviour he displayed when I was with Vicenzo? I opened the door to the penthouse and when I entered, moved straight to the bathroom. “Are you alright, Maria?” I turned to see Helena on the sofa and she looked as if she had been waiting up for me. “What's the time?” “It's five AM.” I sighed resignedly and slumped down on the sofa in front of Helena, then bit my lip to prevent from cryi
Burning With Jealousy Sebastian's PoV The endless meetings concerning the annual business conference were taking their toll as usual. I was moving from one meeting to the other with the top guns so I hadn't even had time to ask if Maria had arrived or if she was settled in the penthouse. I wanted to give her the best experience while she was in Paris, so I instructed my other pilot to bring her down to Paris with my other private jet and I also instructed the host that when they arrived they should only be given the best. The meeting I just came out from lasted for hours. Don't get me wrong, it was meetings such as that one that placed me on a higher pedestal than businessmen of my age but it was long and I was tired physically. When we came out of the boardroom, my physical exhaustion changed to anger and burning jealousy when I saw Maria with some other guy. The guy was pleased to see me and I didn't mean to be rude but I was burning too much with jealousy to even thi
The Annual Corporate Conference Maria's POV The journey to Paris was more enjoyable than the last time because I was not treated as a first time speaker but a seasoned writer. Helena and I were taken to Paris with a private jet and when we arrived, we were lodged in one of the best penthouses in one of Sebastian's highrise buildings. When we entered the penthouse, Helena whistled and turned to me. “At this point Maria, I doubt that all of this is because you are a speaker. You were a speaker last year and we didn't get all of these.” I folded my arms and then raised my brow “Really? Why do you think we were given this type of treatment then?” “Isn’t it obvious? Sebastian of course. We came in his private jet and now we are in one of the best apartments in his highrise buildings.” I chuckled and shook my head. “You of all people know that Sebastian doesn't give a damn about me so yes, he may be the owner but it could have been that the panel decided that it had to be that
