Anticipating The Storm
Maria's POV
“Let him in.” I told Helena then rushed to my room to wash my face again, comb my hair out then change from my skimpy gown to a cashmere loungewear set.
After checking my appearance in the mirror to be certain that I looked presentable, I headed to the living room where Helena engaged in casual conversation with Sebastian.
He stood up immediately I entered and gave me a slow once over, momentarily forgetting that Helena stood close to him.
Helena cleared her throat loudly and said “I'll leave you two to talk.” then she exited.
We stared at each other quietly for a while but I didn't bother to initiate any conversation not because I was being proud but I honestly didn't know what to say at that point, after the embarrassing stunt I pulled.
“I received your message.” Sebastian finally broke the silence.
“I know.” was all I could reply.
“What changed?” He asked softly.
“Look, it was just a momentary thing. I was angry and irritated and for a brief moment in my life, which will not repeat itself again, I acted irrationally. That's all.”
He looked at me incredulously then asked. “It was just a momentary thing? You act so nonchalant as if you sent me a message indicating that you don't want pizza anymore instead of something as serious as not interested in the marriage contract.”
“I apologize for any inconveniences caused.” I replied him begrudgingly.
“You apologize for any inconveniences caused? I am not a business associate, Maria Belluci.”
I tilted my chin and replied. “Technically, you are business associate, Sebastian Bolt. We signed a marriage contract.”
I just explained what happened so why was he going on as if I made him marry my sister instead of me.
He cocked his head to the side and studied me for a while.
And I folded my arms in front of me as defense against his scrutinizing gaze.
My attitude since he came in had been defiant but it was either this or cry like a baby in his arms and I'd rather stay rude than allow him to see me in my weak state.
I expected him to get angry but then he smiled and asked calmly “May I sit?”
“Go ahead, you're here anyway.” I gestured for him to sit down then I sat down on the sofa farthest from him.
“You don't have to hide how you really feel behind this rude attitude and persona that is not really you, Maria.” He said suddenly and I was so surprised by how well he had seen through my ruse, I blinked twice.
He reminded me so much of Nathan and I finally realized that Nathan got his intuitive nature from his father.
With this realization, I decided that I have to be more careful when around him, same way I had to be careful with my emotions when around Nathan.
“How did you get here?” I asked him, instead of replying him. I wanted to change the topic.
“I came up through the elevator.” He replied simply.
“I know that. I mean, how did you get here and the door man did not notify me of your presence?”
“One of my staff also resides in this building. He was so shocked when I told him that I would pay him a visit.” He laughed at his own stunt and I shook my head in amusement.
“You just made realized that we have to be more careful in this building because any body could just visit anybody.”
“Not really, I had to go an extra mile to get to your door undeterred. I will inform you next time.”
I understood what he meant immediately and decided to let it all slide.
“What do you intend to do about your family?”
I raised my forefinger and said. “Wait, before I answer your question, answer this. What would you like to drink? Wine? A glass of crystal waters? Whiskey?”
“A glass of wine is fine, thank you. Anything with grape in it.” He replied and gave me what I had come to recognize as his signature boyish grin.
I cleared my throat and gave myself an imaginary face-palm as soon as I realized that I had stared at his face a little longer than necessary.
“Get a hold of yourself, Maria. He's just another cute guy.” I berated myself quietly.
I ringed for my maid and instructed her to bring a bottle of grape wine from my expensive collection in my wine fridge with a wine glass.
She opened the wine and served Sebastian who thanked her and she retreated inside.
He asked if I wanted wine and I declined quietly prefaring to stay level headed when he was around.
I remember all too well, the last time I was drunk with him around.
“So i asked a question earlier. What do you intend to do about your family? You know they won't stop until they get what they want or something or most likely someone forces their hand.”
“I can handle my family on my own but it becomes a little bit complex when you are involved. I have to come up with better plans.”
He shifted forward on the sofa. “I like the fact that you know that I am involved in this too. We have to do this together, Maria.”
“Okay, what do you suggest we do?” I asked him quietly.
“We have to be at least two steps ahead of them every single time. We cannot allow them catch us unaware and we should always be in a position where we can predict their next point of action.”
Watching him go on about the strategies we need to outsmart my family, I laughed. “I see why the corporate world calls you the boardroom beast.”
Sebastian laughed as well and said. “When it's business, it's business and right now, strategically handling your family and even mine is my business.”
“I can predict my family's next line of action. That's easy peasy. They'll pay me a visit again but I don't know the exact location. I predict my office or most likely here.”
“That's good, and what tactics do you think they will employ?”
I sighed as I thought about it. “My father will try to make me see reason and when that doesn't work, they'll switch to what the know how to do best, verbal stings.”
“Mmmm” He replied as he studied my face and when I realized that he was trying to read my expression, I rearranged my facial expression to depict no emotion.
“I've got it covered because I know how to handle them just fine. The only detail I don't know is when they will show up.”
“Okay, that's good but if you don't mind me asking again, what happened with your family? What did they do to you, Maria?”
I looked at the handsome man seated across me and thought about different ways to send him out of my house.
There's no way I am telling him anything and opening old wounds that I had carefully sealed.
I smiled when I finally realized the tactic I would use to send him out of my house without answering his question and also not coming off as rude.
The Expected ArrivalMaria's PoVI looked at the time and smiled when I saw that even the time was on my side, then I leaned back against my sofa and yawned dramatically, almost inelegantly. “This conversation has been enlightening, Sebastian but you know what I just realized?”“What is it?” He asked with a small suspicious smile on his face.He was still unsure but was starting to suspect that I was up to something.“The Boulevard proposal meeting. I just remembered that I have a very important meeting first thing in the morning and I need to go through my proposals again.”Sebastian chuckled as he finally caught on to what I was doing. “I see you are kicking me out.”“Oh, not at all” I feigned regret then gave him my sweetest smile. “Even corporate princesses like me need to go through their proposals again and again then catch some beauty sleep before D-day.”He shook his head in disbelief while smiling then stood up gracefully. “Fair enough. Don't get too comfortable with this win
Whispers In The DarkSebastian's PoVThe beep of my phone distracted me from the document I was working on.‘Where are you? I've got news.’It was a text from Maria, and seeing as she doesn't call or text except it is absolutely necessary, I called her immediately, wondering what the news could be.She picked on the second first dial and repeated. “Where are you? I've got news.”I laughed, catching her excitement and replied. “I am still in my office. You want to come over to share the news?”“Exactly what I had in mind.” She replied excitedly and I wondered what got her all excited. We talked some more as she made her way to my office then after we hung up the call, I texted my secretary to instruct the office assistant to get food from Maria's favourite restaurant.I had watched her media interviews enough to know her favourite food and even her favourite restaurant. My secretary returned with the food just in time for Maria to inform me that she had arrived and soon she was swaying
Facing The DemonMaria’s POV I woke up with a start and wondered where I was for a moment. The scent and everything else felt different from my room. It was until I moved and felt strong, large arms around me that I realized that I was still in Sebastian’s office and that we were lying on the soft bed in his office. “What the hell is the time?” I asked myself and realized that Sebastian and I were in a spoonlike position and he wrapped his arms around me protectively. I listened to his relaxed breathing as he slept but jumped from the sofa when my eyes rested on the timepiece on the wall. “Shit!” I said and he woke up highly alert. “What’s going on, Maria?” “The time.” I said, putting on my clothes in a hurry. He looked at the time and asked. “You want to go home by this time?” “Of course!” I replied, looking at him with unbelief. “Do you want your staff to come in in a few hours and see me leaving your office building with ruffled clothes?” “I’ll take you home.”
A Sinister OfferMaria’s POV Helena and I celebrated and talked about the investment for a while, then we had to prepare for the day. “Hello, momma.” Nathan greeted me with a wide grin when he saw me. I smiled,, thinking about how his grin looked so much like Sebastian’s grin. “Hello, my baby. Did you sleep well?” I asked, then gave him a squeezy hug. “Yes, but I missed you last night.” He said it in his baby accent. “Awww, I am sorry, baby. I will play bricks and castles with you tonight. Do we have a deal?” "Yeahh!” he shouted in delight and ran in circles. “It’s time for your bath, baby, then I will make your favorite waffles and pack your lunch for preschool. How does that sound?” He jumped, then wrapped his chubby arms around my neck and pecked my cheeks. I took him to his bathroom and bathed him, then Emily got him ready for school while I made his food and packed his lunch, then pecked him and prepared for work while he ate. I put on a two-piece corporate out
The Deadly Ultimatum Maria's POV I sat down slowly on my chair and tried to process what happened. “What the hell was that?” I asked myself softly. “Are you certain that this is the kind of life you want to sign up for? You haven't spent a dime from the investment Sebastian sent. You can still send it back.” I picked up my phone to call Sebastian but then I shook my head defiantly and dropped the phone. “I am not some cowering little girl those people think that they can bully to do their selfish bidding. I will see this through to the end and I will prevail.” Shrugging the incident with Sebastian's father off, I focused on disseminating the proceedings of the investment. Soon, my Executive Assistant came back with news. “Every instruction has been carried out, Ms. Belluci and as expected, the news has caused an excited ripple to flow in our company today.” “Good! Schedule a meeting with our top executives in two hours. When you are done, put a call through to our tech ve
The Breaking PointMaria’s POV We got to the hospital and headed inside after Sebastian’s driver got a good parking space in the parking lot. The receptionist informed us that my father had been taken to the ER and then directed us to a private waiting room after writing down my name and contact details. Immediately I entered, I walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out. It depicted a beautiful landscape view of the city but she couldn’t see it because she replayed the events of the day before her eyes. “Maria, you have to take it easy on yourself.” Sebastian advised softly behind her. “I know what you are trying to do but I want you to know that none of this is your fault.” I turned and looked up at him squarely in the face. “You are right and you are wrong. You are right because none of this is my fault. I didn’t force them to show up in my office and throw tantrums. You are wrong because what you think I am trying to do is not what I am doing.” “What
A Gesture Of KindnessSebastian’s POV I stared after Maria until she entered her apartment building. She would always play the superwoman and I thought that she was one of the strongest and smartest women I know but this situation with her family was getting to her. She didn’t say a word to me about it, nor did she cry or throw tantrums but I could sense her sorrow because it hung vividly over her. While I was in deep thought, an idea came to my mind, and I acted on it immediately. I opened social media and copied the office cell of Maria’s best friend and housemate, Helena. When I was done, I dialed her cell. ********* “Hello Helena, thank you for meeting me.” I welcomed her as soon as she took her seat across me on the terrace session of my favorite elite restaurant. We exchanged pleasantries and ordered glasses of wine. “I must confess, Sebastian, I have a very long, worky day but I had to squeeze out time because curiosity has taken a major hold. What is this abou
Headlines And HavocMaria's POV I woke up with a smile on my face still reminiscing about the day before where Sebastian planned a surprise for me. The book session with Angela Vangore was so precious that I didn't want it to end. I rolled to the other side of my California Queen sized bed and smiled as I recalled the conversation we had over the phone when I came back home. “You did so many unimaginable things today, Sebastian. How exactly did you pull them off?” I asked with awe in my voice, still unable to get over the excitement of the day. “Let’s just say, it pays to have friends in high places and it pays even higher to be able to call in favors in the shortest time possible.” “That's great! Thank you for today. I enjoyed every moment but the reading and discussion session with Angela was mind-blowing. I don't think I can get over it” “I am glad we could make you smile and get excited.” He replied but then his reply reminded me about all that was going on. He cle
Sweet Then SourMaria's POV It was the day of the conference and I would soon be called up to speak. My nerves were in shambles and Helena was squeezing my hands from time to time. I craned my neck and looked towards the west wing section of the hall and the door for the umpteenth time. “He'll be here soon. He has to be. Sebastian has never missed a day in this conference and he won’t start now, darling.” Helena whispered and I didn’t bother arguing with her that I wasn’t looking for Sebastian. After the intimate moment we had, he still came around and helped me practise for my speaking section and each time he did that, it was as if a higher level of confidence was unlocked in me. “Let’s welcome on stage for the third speaking session, Miss Maria Belluci.” I heard the host announce my name and the sound of applause that accompanied the announcement. “You’ve got this, baby girl.” Helena whispered fiercely and kissed my hand. As I walked to the stage, I became increasi
The Conference IISebastian's POV I left Keith's penthouse apartment and realized that Maria would be alone in her apartment. The urge to go and see her was strong but then there was also the fact that she had been distant since the encounter with my sister, Ailene. I didn't blame her though, because I would do the same if I had met Ailene as Maria. Giving up the idea, I turned to go to my room but the urge to see her was so strong, I found myself walking towards her door. “Seriously Lena, what do you want this time? More condoms?” I heard her shout and laughed because I couldn't wait to see her face when she found out that it wasn't Lena but me. But when she opened the door, I was the one who became speechless when I saw her outfit. She wore a silk camisole and a matching pair of small silk shorts. They were the smallest pair of clothing I had seen on her and I was going crazy already. I tried to get my acts together so I cleared my throat. “I uhh, I wanted to come
The Conference Maria's POV After the flopped dinner event with Sebastian and his sister, I buried myself deep inside work and life as Nathan's mother to avoid him and the troubles that came with him. Whenever he called I was either busy with work or Nathan hence there was no time to have lengthy conversations or even see him. Two weeks later, I was invited to be a guest speaker in one of the biggest conferences that was held in the legal sphere in collaboration with the business sphere. “Man! I am so excited about this conference. I am so excited to be in Paris again.” Helena shouted as we exited our plane to head to the SUV that would take us to our suite. I had guest speaker privileges and Helena was enjoying every single moment. “I am nervous, man.” I stated plainly. “Oh, come off it. You will do fine.” She waved me off, more interested in the glitz that came with being a speaker at the conference. “The crowd.” I stated and Helena turned. “You do realize that Se
Aftermaths Of DinnerSebastian's PoV “What just happened?” I asked no one in particular as soon as Maria and Helena entered the elevator and left. I really didn't understand what happened in the space of forty minutes. One minute I was admiring the exotic beauty that Maria was and the next minute she was leaving indicating that she had lost interest while my sister sat there with a satisfied glow on her face. “Someone tell me what the hell just happened.” I demanded hotly in a loud voice which made Ailene jump in surprise. “What happened, Ailene? What was all that about?” Keith asked my sister with a subtly accusatory tone. “What happened where? Why are you asking me? Why don't you ask the person who walked away in the middle of dinner? A phone call should clarify details.” “Shut the hell up, Ailene. Don't make me angry.” I growled in a low voice and she gasped. “What is going on, Seb? You've…you've never talked to me this way before.” “That's because you've never do
Meeting AileneMaria's POV “Why exactly am I attending this dinner with you?” Helena grumbled behind me as we wore the pointy toe stilettos that we bought from the fashion shop a few days ago. “You will attend the dinner with me because I get to meet another Bolt family member. Look at it as a uhh support system kinda thing.” “Support system kinda thing? Since when do you need that level of support Maria Bellucci?” “Since the craziness that is called the Kidman family and the craziness that is Sebastian's father. You saw their actions recently, right?” “Yeah, you have a point. Which family member are we meeting this time around? His mother?” “Nope! His younger sister.” “Okay, younger sisters do not bring trouble.” Helena replied with enthusiasm then her face fell as she remembered something or someone. “Well, Maria. There's your younger sister.” “You better watch your mouth, missy. She's no sister of mine.” I replied with a fierce tone and Helena raised her hand in sur
Plans And Counterplans Mr. Bolt PoV I waited until Sebastian left then picked up my phone and called Max Kidman. “Max, we have a problem. Meet me at the club now. Also, come along with your daughter, Cassandra. I’d like to make a request of her and also ask her some questions concerning her last meeting with my son.” The situation seemed to be getting out of hand and if I don't curb it now then I have a lot to lose. In fact, I will go down with the Kidmans because I know that Max will surely take his pound of flesh. Cassandra's wedding to Sebastian was all that Max wanted to keep him quiet because if he had Sebastian as a son-in-law then there was no way he would go down and I won't have to go down with him. I don't want to go down so I have to do everything humanly possible to ensure that Sebastian married the Kidman girl. If I look at it logically then I would agree that Sebastian was going after the right Kidman daughter. Maria was smart, bright and doing well with h
Kindling FlamesSebastian's PoV “What do you mean by what happened?” I asked Maria, admiring how gorgeous she looked even though she was obviously angry. She tsked and fixed hot gazes on me. “What happened between you and Cassandra? How and why exactly are you two even together in one picture? Where was the location in the picture? I need details. I can't just wake up and get surprises from the news. It shouldn't be my norm. I need details so I know what I am possibly facing soon.” “Maria, please take a seat. I will share every detail soon.” “Okay.” She simply replied then sat down and crossed her arms in front of her and I clamped my hands to prevent myself from smiling even though I was very angry. I was angry at myself for not flowing with my instincts because I knew immediately Cassandra showed up uninvited that something fishy was going on but I didn't act on it. I was also angry at Cassandra, the Kidmans and even my father for all these tantrums and naughty games and
News FlashMaria's PoV I woke up thinking about Maria's statement about me and Sebastian, and even as I got ready for work, the statement still won't leave my head. “What did she mean by oh Maria you are so wrong about you and Sebastian?” I asked myself as I styled my hair. I heard a knock on my door and turned to see Nathan followed closely by Emily. “Who's there at my door?” I asked dramatically then gasped and half shouted. “Oh look! It's my son! And he’s sooo ready for school.” Nathan laughed and raced towards my ready arms. I grabbed him and started tickling his chubby baby body until he raced his hands and started shouting amidst laughter. “I surrender! I surrender!” Laughing hard as well, I placed him down and planted many kisses on his face. He looked at me and said, “When I grow up, mommy, I will tickle you many many times.” “Well, that's when you grow up but till then I will….” I crouched low and started for him but he screamed and raced out of my room amidst
Running From The TruthHelena's POV It's been two days since I asked Keith to leave my house and since that time I hadn't heard a word from him. I should be relieved about this but for some reason I couldn't explain, it irked me and I just wanted to send myself to the naughty corner for even starting anything with him in the first place. “What were you thinking, Lena?” I asked myself quietly and Maria replied. “Did you say something, Lena?” “No, no. I was just talking to myself.” “Mmmhmm.” She replied sarcastically and pushed her anti blue-ray glasses downwards and dramatically gave a pose that silently depicted. 'Let me have a good look at you.’ I gave her a self conscious laugh and asked. “Girl, what is it?” “You were talking to yourself. That's what's up. You've been talking to yourself for days now and we both know when you do that, then you have something eating you inside. I know it's not work because you guys wrapped up the deal successfully and you are on a sh
