Chapter 6

"Aubrey.. my wife.. you killed her, you fucking killed her!"

I hear Kenneth speak and I finally release the breath that I had been unconsciously holding in.

So he doesn't know..

I see his fake tears flow out easily like a well rehearsed performance and I am instantly repulsed by how good his acting was. If I hadn't discovered his secret, I would have still believed he was the loving, innocent and caring husband he played as.

Georgina suddenly swooped in, comforting her son with a gentle touch before her eyes locked onto mine, casting me an angry and disgusted look. "Can you see how much pain he's going through because of you? You're the reason my darling Kenneth lost his beautiful wife!”

I scoff, now that I'm dead she finally remembers to give me a compliment. What happened to ragamuffin? wretched girl? Four eyed bitch?

“And how in the world did you even get out of jail?!” Georgina asks, now realising.

My gaze drifts to Alexander, wondering if he'd reveal himself as my benefactor, at the same time, his eyes shifts from his device, also meeting mine but his expression remained neutral, no ounce of emotion.

My eyes on the other hand, lingered longer than I'd like to admit on his face, his chiselled features seemed carved from granite, strong and unyielding and his broad shoulders and tall frame commanded attention.

“Who dared go behind my back and bail Victoria out of jail?" As Georgina spoke, her voice rose, casting deathly glares at everyone in the room.

No one answered and Alexander finally rose from his seat, and walked towards Georgina, both hands folded elegantly behind his back, each step precise.

He towered over Georgina, his presence imposing.

"I bailed her out.” Alexander spoke and the room immediately plunged into silence, shock etched on everyone's face including mine.

I had no idea he’d actually tell the truth, that he had bailed me out.

Janet was also shocked by Alexander’s words, no one was fond of Victoria especially him. “I thought Alexander hates Victoria, why did he bail her out then?”

Richard who stood beside her seemingly enjoying the drama shrugged. "How should I know? My uncle's impossible to read.”

Georgina's eyes on the other hand widened, her face paling. "Brother-in-law... why-"

Alexander cut her off, his tone firm. "Is this why you called me here?"

Georgina's bravado deflated under Alexander's scary gaze. She took a step back, her voice trembling. "I-I... ahem. I called everyone here to discuss Aubrey's burial. It's scheduled for the 26th."

I instantly stiffened. My own body.. was being buried. I had no idea how to react, the thought alone sending an uncomfortable chill down my spine.

Georgina's gaze suddenly lands on me, her voice laced with malice. "You'll perform most of the duties on that day, after all, Aubrey considered you a sister."

I didn't hear a thing she said, all that reeled through my mind was how I would be able to bear witness to my own funeral. But as I was finally about to speak, Alexander spoke before I did.

“I was summoned here for this?"

Georgina cowered again. "S-she's Kenneth's wife.. K-Kenneth is your nephew, your presence is also equally i-important."

Alexander's expression remained unyielding, his hands elegantly folded behind his back. "I won't attend anything that doesn't benefit me. Don't involve me in such trivial matters again."

Trivial matters? Someone's death meant so little to him?

Andrew suddenly intervened, placing a hand on Alexander's shoulder. "Brother, don't be like this. The press will spread gossip if you're absent from the funeral."

Alexander's gaze shifted to his shoulder, his eyes lingering on Andrew's hand before snapping to his face and Andrew withdrew his hand hastily followed by a nervous chuckle. "I-I didn't mean—"

Alexander's voice abruptly cut through his sentence. "Let's go."

He turned to leave, but paused, his eyes locking onto.. mine?

“I said let's leave."

I stood frozen for a while, but then snapped out of it and followed Alexander out.

Georgina on the other hand immediately snapped at her husband."You can't even control your own brother! If he doesn't attend, the press will ruin us!"

Andrew sighed, undoing his tie. "Don't worry, he'll attend."

Georgina scoffed. "And how are you so sure? Alexander does not listen to anyone!”

Andrew's eyes suddenly narrowed into a distance as if thinking of something. "Gina, like I said. He will come."

As I stepped out of the house, the scorching sun enveloped me, a contrast to the gloomy atmosphere I’d just stepped out from. My gaze drifted to the car infront, and I saw Jarred's familiar figure standing by the door, exactly where I'd left him.

Had he been standing there under the blistering sun since I'd gone inside?

Jarred's eyes suddenly met mine, and with a nod, he walked into the driver's seat but I instead followed Alexander from behind, walking beside him toward his car.

As I reached for the passenger’s door handle, Alexander's voice halted me. "Did I give you permission to enter my car? Go with Jarred."

I creased my brows, frustration chiming in. This attitude wouldn't do, if we continued this way, I wouldn't even be able to convince him to attend Conner's charity event talk less of supporting it.

I sighed, retreating my hold on the door handle. Alexander's gaze lingered on me, his expression unreadable.

Without a word, I turned and walked towards Jarred's car, settling into the back seat, the cool air conditioning welcoming me.

Jarred's eyes met mine through the rearview mirror. "Ready Mrs Blackwood?"

I nodded, watching Alexander's car pull away and Jarred followed from behind, maintaining a discreet distance.

The two cars finally came to a screeching halt infront of Alexander's mansion and I come of out of the vehicle, only to see Alexander's silhouette already disappearing into the house.

It made me wonder how fast he walked.

I turn to the side and see Jarred already standing by the car, he didn't return my gaze and instead just looked ahead, as if waiting for me to walk in first.

“Why do you enjoy standing?” I finally ask and his gaze shifts and lands on me and I see his lips part.

“I'm leaning.”

“...”

Didn't that mean the same thing?

I sigh and begin to walk towards the house, Jarred trailing behind me. Once I got in, I was immediately enveloped by the strong smell of cigarettes which made me start coughing profusely, my hands now frantically searching for something in my purse, but Alexander's voice made me pause.

“Pregnancy results?” He asked and drew in smoke from the cigarette placed between his middle and ring finger.

“Results..” My mind went into a haze for a second, trying to remember where I had placed the test results, but Jarred soon steps in front and hands over the results to Alexander, making me sigh a little in relief.

I see Alexander quench the cigar in the ashtray beside him before going through the pregnancy results with focus.

After some minutes, he finally places the files down on the table and leaned back into the chair.

“And the DNA results?”
