I tugged on my short skirt as I walked into the hallway, ready for class and looking for Lucy.
I was too busy crying, I didn't text her back after last night.
Hopefully I don't get to hear her gushing about thier date or see hickeys he had given her all over her neck today.
“The ugly duckling arrives” I heard the voice of my usual bullies as I walked towards my locker, it was too late to turn back now.
I let my head drop so I would not look at their faces and be reminded of my nightmares.
“What is with that green blouse? It's so ugly my eyes are becoming sore” Tatiana, the annoying girlfriend of Spencer said about my blouse and he kissed her cheek before laughing.
They were surrounded by other boys and girls, littering the hallway before class.
“Give me my twenty bucks Jerry, I told you her hair would still be tangled today. You didn’t expect her to change overnight did you?” Imani said to one of the boys and the rest laughed before he dug out his wallet and placed the dollar note in her hand.
I was surprised Caine was not with them today, he was usually their leader who led without speaking a word.
He was a wicked bully who moved silently, you never knew his next move.
"Guys she's wearing a mini skirt today" Jojo announced and I groaned inwardly.
Sadly enough for me, they sat directly opposite my locker today so I had no choice than to be near them and hear these awful things about myself.
"Ohhhhhh" they all cooed in unison before bursting out laughing.
"The audacity" Tatiana said snickering.
"I guess it was because Lucy wore one yesterday, I loved that skirt she wore. Did you see it?"
"I did, is that what she's trying to copy? She failed woefully with a straight F"
"What does Lucy even see in her anyways, she's too much of a hot baddie to be hanging out with shrek here"
"That's mean" Jerry said and they all started laughing
"Shut up Jerry, don't make it look like we're doing something wrong here and have the teacher on us" Jojo said shutting him up.
The books I gathered from my locker fell from my hand and some of the boys snorted before chuckling.
"Isn't that Lucy's book? No wonder she hangs around with her"
"I mean if I get a useless, human deformed werewolf to do all my dirty business, I would keep them on a leash at all times. I envy Lucy"
That was not true, Lucy really liked me to be her friend and that was why we're friend.
“More like half baked” Spencer said and the group laughed loudly again.
“Medium rare” someone chipped in and the group laughed again.
“Shut up Spencer before I tell on how you wanted to beat your meat to Miss Abby’s picture during break in your car” Lucy said out of nowhere and my heart leaped with joy.
"Ewww, you did that?" Tatiana, his girlfriend pushed his hand away from her shoulder, suddenly the whole group turned on him.
The school bell rang signaling the beginning of school lessons and Lucy used her foot to push one of the books on the ground to me before walking away.
“Come on Jaz” she said and I hurriedly gathered all the books, closed my locker and ran after her.
“Thank you” I said to her as I finally caught up with her.
"Did you do my assignment?" She asked as she went through her phone.
"Yes" I nodded handing her her books but she was already inside the class so I hurried behind her to get a seat.
We both sat down and she slammed her phone down before turning to me angrily.
"Why didn't you reply my text?" She asked me coldly and I started to stutter while my mind ran wild with lies to give her.
It came up with none.
"You know what, never mind. I got you something" she said and started digging into her bag.
I started to feel guilty, I was hating on my friend for being with the boy I liked, that was awful of me.
As I bit my lip wondering how to apologize, a figure sat in the empty seat next to me.
Caine Creek.
God, my heart started to flutter and I could feel my blood drum in my ears.
I could not control myself as I could not control my mouth.
“Hi” I said to him but Caine ignored me, he didn't even spare me a glance.
I was about to try my luck again before Lucy spoke up. "It's a Swarovski bracelet.... Caine baby, how are you?" Lucy's speech towards me forgotten as soon as she sighted Caine.
She tossed the bracelet on my desk carelessly.
"Hi" Caine simply said to her before looking away.
God, his voice was hoarse with a low rumble.
It stirred something within me.
“Jaz move. I need to sit next to Caine” Lucy nudged me in my rib harshly.
“Okay” I sighed before gathering my stuff.
But Miss Abby choose that exact moment to come into the class.
“Sit your ass down Campbell, quiet down class” she yelled at me and I quietly sat back down in my seat.
But when I turned to look at Lucy, she was seething with rage, her face red and a vein throbbing in the middle of her forehead like it always did whenever she was furious.
I could not do anything about it so I looked away, but I caught Caine searching for something in the corner of my eye.
“Do you need my pen?” I asked him as I noticed what he was looking for.
He stared at me and the pen in my hand.
"I have an extra one" I reassured him but my heart was beating wildly.
His hand stretched and he quickly collected the pen from my hand without a word.
A happy smile danced on my lips as I searched for the other pen in my bag.
It felt like I was breathing the same air he let out during the lesson.
But that smile did not last for long, because Lucy accosted me after class.
After most of the people have left the class, she slammed her fist in my desk, startling me and making me jerk in fear.
"You just had to be a bitch, didn't you?" Lucy said to me in a deathly steely tone.
"What?"
"I see what you're doing, you're trying to steal Caine from me" Lucy accused and I started to shake my head.
"No Luce, why would I..."
"Shut your ugly mouth you stupid ogre. You already told me you liked him" she was seething, while fixing her hair.
"I swear, that's not it"
"You know, I tried to be a good friend to the most ugliest girl in school. I protected you and sheltered you from your bullies and you decide to be a whore and take my boyfriend away From me"
Boyfriend? My mouth dropped open.
"That's right, Caine asked me out and you better start getting comfortable with that. But from now on, stay away from him"
"Luce"
"And I'll let Spencer and the rest explain how much of a jump scare you are and how ugly you look to you next time. And I will let them eat you to your bones" she finished, stood up and left the class without another word.
I hated myself.
I heard a loud whistle and I looked around from where the sound come.I knew it meant danger, I had heard that sound in school many times. My eyes darted round in fear."Hey ogre!!" I heard a loud voice from behind the abandoned house in beside me.Spencer McHaton."Medium rare!!!" Another gruff voice called out as my heart beat loudly in fear."Leave me alone!" I cried out in fear as I hurried away from the lonely road I always took home.As my feet took me hurriedly away, I was not looking at my front until I bumped into a wall, hitting my chest and I fell to the floor, scraping my hands in the process."Where are you running to Princess?"When I opened my eyes, shaking away the thundering headache that was suddenly in my head, I came face to face with the wall had stumbled into.Harper, Spencer's fraternal crazy twin."I don't want any problem please, leave me alone please. I just want to go home" I cried as I saw my bleeding arms."Are you calling me a troublemaker?" Harper asked
Few blocks from my house, I cleaned my tears and tried to hide the red angry bruises on my arms. When I got home, the door was unlocked as usual but some of the things were missing in the living room, like the Tv and the tables."Mum?!" I called out for my mother but there was no reply."Mum?!"I walked up the stairs to her room to look for her and get an explanation to what was going on in our house. And my father was no where to be found. Not that it mattered because he was rarely at home but it's been two months since I last saw him.As the Beta of the pack , he was always busy but at night when I saw other fathers get home, I always wondered why mine never came back or even bothered calling. When I got into my mother's room, the sight was worse than what I had met in the living room. All her things were packed and her stuffs were labeled in different boxes on the floor."Mum, why is the... What's going on? Why are you packing? Are you giving your things out?" My questions came in
“Hello Mrs Elena, is Lucy home?” I asked Lucy's Aunty who I had met gardening right outside their house.I had come to tell my best friend that I was leaving.Ever since that incident in school, Lucy had refused to talk to me and I was not surprised when she did not come to look for me even when I had not showed up to school in days.So here I was trying to mend broken fences before I left and once again I was met with her absence.“No honey, she went out with that naughty boy again. After messing my sheets up, they leave my house in a mess. Once that stubborn girl comes home she’ll clean this house spotless like a maid. She just gets me mad all the time” Elena said furiously, digging away at the soil. The naughty boy in question: Caine Creek. But I could care less about him now, he no longer mattered to me."Do you know where she went to?" I asked her, helping her with her water can for her garden.“Thank you sweetie. Well, Lucy wouldn't tell me where they were headed but I heard the
"I'll give you a moment to clear out your locker alone. The classes are going on now, so you have enough time to get what you want and leave without any drama" The school principal, Miss Johnson, said to me after my mother told her on the phone that I was leaving school.By now I'm guessing half of the parents in the pack would've heard about the drama between my parents.I told her to plead with Miss Johnson to make my move as stealthy as possible, because I knew how much mockery I was going to get if the other students knew I was leaving."I heard about what was going on between you and the other students," she said behind me as we walked to my locker. "You lost so much weight," she added after I didn't say anything. She knew about it.The whole school knew about my bullying but no one did anything about it, they rather enjoyed it."I'm sorry I couldn't do anything about it, and I'm sorry about your parents" she said."I heard your father found his mate. Do you know her?" She asked
SIX YEARS LATERI opened the door to the house I once left and promised to never come back. But here I was standing in the middle of the empty living room and looking for the one man I swore to hate for the rest of my life.Last I heard, his mate died from a rouge attack in the pack and now my dad was mateless and wife-less.Alone, lonely and drowning himself in work as usual.Karma was a real bitch they said and I was witnessing.“Dad” I called to the man who was lying motionless in his bedroom staring at the ceiling. The house he once abandoned us, and even after we left he never called.“Jasmine, hey.” He laughed happily and stood up to hug me but his movements were slow, he had aged over the last six years.Slowly he let go of the hug but didn't let go of my hand.“How’re you?” I asked him, smiling a little and happy to see him. After my mother remarried, I figured it was time to let go of my grudges and I did.I had forgiven my dad already but I didn't know if I could ever forget
JASMINEThe silence that followed was deafening, almost scaring me out of my position. Caine stood before me, eyes seeing around like he’d just found a lost treasure. “I’m searching for Lucy. Any idea where she might be?” I asked, exchanging glances with the rest of the group. “Errands,” Caine replied. His voice sounded thicker and deeper than the last time we spoke. “Ohh…when she returns please tell her I stopped by,” I said to him and turned to leave. “Jasmine,” he called. I halted in my tracks and turned to him. He seemed to be contemplating approaching me. At first I thought he was seeking approval from the rest of the gang. Hell no. He was freaking Caine Creek. He didn’t need anyone’s approval. He gestured for them to leave, which they did. “You…just show up from nowhere after how many years?” He asked, covering the gap between us. There was no need to be scared this time. I was better than the last time we stood this close. The closer he got, the harder my heart raced. I
JASMINEThe tension between us was undeniable and I cursed myself for even acknowledging it. Caine leaned against the door frame, shirtless with his hands folded across his chest. His eyes scanned me all over again, like he was trying to figure me out all over again. “I’ll wait outside then,” I said to him and turned around to leave. “Maybe you haven’t heard but the pack is not as safe as when you left. We get surprise attacks at any time of the day. People go missing, dead bodies sprawl out of the ground almost every morning yet, no one has answers to these happenings,”“I’ll advise you to come in and wait,” he finally made his point. I won’t lie, the mention of getting attacked at any time of the day sent my heart racing. With a deep, regrettable sigh, I took another turn and made my way into the house. He locked the door and joined me shortly after putting on a shirt. The room was surprisingly clean for a guy like Caine. He wasn’t this arranged six years ago. I perched at the ed
JASMINEThe room erupted into chaos. Everyone shot up from their seats, the chairs screeching as we hurried towards Spencer. Caine led the way, getting to Spencer before the rest of us. “What happened?” He asked, helping him in. I checked outside the door to confirm there was no one else out there. It was clear. “The diner,” Spencer choked on his blood. “He needs to be attended to. Clear the table,” I assisted Caine to carry him. The rest stood, looking at me to confirm if I was actually dishing out orders to them. “You heard her!” Caine barked as we hurried across the room carrying Spencer. Imani and Jojo cleared the table, giving me the opportunity to get down to a work I had learnt on my own and practiced with Bryan. “Take his clothes off,” I told Jojo before rushing to get a bowl of water. After my mother moved in with her new family, her whole attention focused on them, I found ways to defend myself. I learnt how to stand up for myself, defend myself and treat my wounds. I
JASMINE’S POV “Can I have a word with you?” I asked, stealing glances at Bryan who was looking out of the window. Caine was still answering a call at the garage while I pulled Lucy to a corner. “That’s him,” I blurted. “Him? What do you mean by him?” “My ex, Lucy, Bryan. That’s him,” I clarified. My heart raced, my blood boiling as I mistakenly looked into his eyes. He looked away immediately, and I knew that guilt was eating him up. “Your…ex? That Bryan?” “Yes, Lucy, that's Bryan,” I answered. “Okay, chill. He’s been my work partner for a while now. I never knew he was the Bryan you were talking about,” Lucy snapped. She noticed that wasn’t going to get me calm, so instead, she took my hands and pulled me closer to her. “Hey, nothing is going on between us, he’s just a colleague. I am with Caine, remember?” She asked. I didn’t want to give her a response, but the way she looked into my eyes demanded one. I nodded consecutively. “Yeah, yeah,” I breathed. “An
LUCY’S POV “Whatever this is, Luce, it’s not normal,” Bryan said, inching closer to me. I sighed, falling back on the wooden chair behind me. We stood for almost ten minutes, waiting for Adrian to finish up with his meal. When he was finally done, he crept out from the darkness, the red eyes still glowing as he made himself visible. I felt tears brewing in my eyes as I stood up and tossed a jacket to him. “Put these on”. “How long has he been this way,” Bryan asked, helping me with the empty blood bags. “A month, two or three weeks. I can’t really tell. All I know is that there was something wrong with him the last time I went home,” “There’s nothing wrong with me,” Adrian interrupted, walking out of the darkness completely. He exhaled, slowly opening his eyes. The red was gone, likewise the rage. “Dad did something new, and for the first time it worked,” “For the first time?” I asked, trying to process what he meant. “Have there been other trials, Adrian?” “Yeah…they all
LUCY'S POVMy heart skipped a beat as the bag fell from my shoulder, the blood bags which I had stolen from the pack clinic sprawling on the floor. “Oh my God! Caine!” I exclaimed, trying to hide the guilt as I started linking them up with a rush. I tossed them into the bag, not paying attention to whatever he was saying.“Lucy, I asked a question!” He pulled my shoulder, sending me to the floor. I fell on my butt, wincing in pain. “Oh my…Luce, I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to,”“Stay away from me,” I yelled, stopping him with an extended palm. I took my time on the floor, thinking of what lie to give to him so he wouldn’t go asking questions. “Lucy…I didn’t mean to hit you in that manner,” he apologized, taking further steps closer to me. I burst into tears, burying my head in my legs. That was the first excuse I could garner from my thoughts, just so I’d have enough time to think. “Don’t touch me, Caine,” I whimpered, sobbing into my palms. “You almost ruined it all. My efforts. My har
CAINES POV“You shouldn’t have moved the bodies,” Sheriff Sherwood returned to us, pocketing his gun.“We’re sorry, we just couldn’t stand and do nothing,” I replied. He gestured with his head for us to walk with him, and we didn’t stop until we were out of the crime scene, standing amid police vans and ambulances. I knew what he wanted to say just by looking at him. “Look, I’m sorry uncle, I just had to call in this favor. I understand you’ve helped us a lot of times, and my dad probably owes you for the countless favors you have rendered…”“Kid…”“Just…please. This is more like an outbreak than a crime scene. It’s…” I paused, staring at the bodies that were being moved. “It’s dark,” I completed. Uncle Sherwood, my father's younger brother, was the family’s stray child. He started by not meeting his wolf when he was younger, by hanging out in the human world, and always sneaking out of the house. According to my father, he got into more trouble than we could count. Especially with
JASMINES POVI was too wasted to act. I just sat there, letting the chaos around me do its thing. My head fell to the chair, watching as the ceiling traveled in circles. I thought I saw some runes on them, calling into me with its blue glowing light. They looked pretty, and I extended my hands, wishing I could float in the air and know what they felt like. But the music in the room died down, cutting my solemn moment short.“Let’s go, Jasmine,” I heard Caines voice. He sounded muffled, and I couldn’t see his face. “You’re drunk, how much did you have to drink?” He asked, throwing my hand around his shoulder and grabbing me from the waist. I knew what was happening around me, but at the same time, I didn’t. For a second I thought I was levitating, but then whenever I looked at Caine, that hope was gone. I didn’t feel sad or anything, just…empty. For once., nothing bothered me. Caine led me out of the room, and to stop my eyes from hurting, I closed them and rested my head on his sh
JASMINES POVI pressed my hand against my chest, leaning on the side of the wall as my mind spiraled out of control. Thoughts flew in like my mind was a passageway for them, causing my breath to come out ragged. A lot had happened in just what?—three days? And yet there was still someone downstairs calling me a murderer. How was I supposed to face all these while trying to focus on what wolf I would train? Not to speak of my father's deal with Natalia. I heaved a sigh, halted before my mirror, and ran my hands down my hair. The echoes of laughter and muffled sounds of music traveled into my room, it was a room party which I was informed about but declined. But I couldn’t stay in my room, not with all these thoughts running into my head. I needed a distraction, and the room party just seemed like it.With a little touch on my face and hair, I made my way to the room. Room 27. I knocked twice and the door flung open almost immediately, revealing an unfamiliar face. “I know you,” he
CAINE’S POV“Get off her!” I raced past Jojo and Imani, almost knocking them down as I made my way to Jasmine and Isha. I pulled Isha off her and flung her to the feet of her brothers. “Keep your eyes on her!” I yelled at them. For a second, I thought I saw the disappointment in their eyes. They helped Isha up, holding her still despite her aggressive kicks to be set free and yolk her into the living room. “Are you okay?” I extended my hand to help her up. “Yeah,” she coughed, almost falling back on my shoulder. Lucy stepped in between us. “I’ll take her from here,” she said, pulling Jasmine away from me. We all went into the living room but were divided. Jojo and Lucy were with Jasmine, while Harper, Spencer, and Imani were with Isha. I could already sense trouble coming hard at us. “She killed them,” Isha cried, sobbing in the arms of her brothers. “We’ll deal with that later, Isha,” I tried to keep her calm, but that made her angrier. Her blood-red eyes shot angrily at me, sn
JASMINES POVThoughts. More thoughts. Extra thoughts. All night, that was all running through my mind. A brother? I scoffed, turning to the other side of the bed. That was when I realized the sun was out. I’d spent all night pondering on Natalia’s words. I wanted to come down from my bed and feed my thirst, but my body isn't encouraging. I needed rest, even if it was for an hour or two. I shut my eyes, hoping to sleep this time. And just when I thought I was drifting into sleep, a knock came on my door. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up on the bed. The door opened, it was Caine. “Long night?” He asked, walking into my room. I sighed, collapsing on my bed. “How’s Jerry?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. They were beginning to feel heavy with sleep, but with Caine in my room, I knew my day had just begun. “He’s recovering well. Just the…you know…” he said, helping himself to a chair opposite my bed. I sat back up, holding my banging head with both hands. “Cool,” I dragged. “I came t
JASMINES POV “Where do we start from?” I asked Natalia, slowly walking to the glass while I maintained eye contact with her. “Trust,” she blurted, standing up and walking to the edge of the glass. I halted in front of her, a smile crawling up my lips. “Trust is the last thing you could ask for from me,” I replied, holding the gaze until he nodded with her hands going up in the air. “I’d understand. I mean who would want to trust me after going through that betrayal from her mother,” “She did it to keep me safe,” I defended my mom despite how it hurt me to know about all this. But I guess Natalia could see beneath my words of defense like she knew I was broken. “Did she? I mean…look at the damage she has caused you. She’s made you look weak…you’ve become a mockery…so much for someone who falls under…” “Answers,” I interrupted, holding back the tears in my eyes. The lock of the door clicked from outside, and I quickly took a glance at the key hanging in my trousers. Someone el
