Chad
He looked up to the deep blue color that embraced the clear evening sky as the dry harmattan weather of the Nigerian December descended on him and he inhaled deeply, smiling at the memories it brought him.
It had been seven years since that cold night of a thousand events and boys were now grown men.
He marveled at how much he had changed since he left the country years ago and how one eventful day had changed the course of his life forever, changing even the good to somewhat mediocre, it's all life; life is the funniest joke in all of history, he thought.
He inhaled the humid air again with his eyes shut this time and it had that stink of corruption, insincerity, and dust lurking somewhere behind the humid odorless mess. He smiled because that was truly the smell of the home he knew, Nigeria, in all her glory.
He helped himself in and watched from the rear view mirror how his luggage was carried into the boot of a rickety, jerky taxi.
The engines were still running, sounding like an old woman who was lamenting of how death had forsaken her, farting and coughing at intervals.
"Oga, na twelve thousand naira, last,"(sir, your final charge is twelve thousand naira) the cabman repeated grudgingly as he grumbled into the driver's seat.
He was saying that for the one-millionth time.
Does he think I am deaf?
"Fine, move this carton already joor” Chad replied and a smirk crept up his cheeks involuntarily as he stressed on the word 'joor', it pleased him to realize that he had still got hold of the Nigerian slang after seven years.
He could finally say he had burst out of every shell having finally grown into that tall, handsome young man graced with a chocolate skin, a good stature, and a crispy deep voice that blended well with his speech, a man his mother had always wanted him to be.
The funniest thing he observed about himself however was that after all these years he was still wearing those same old spectacles which gave him the looks of a responsible man at all times.
He had started to live the life he had dreamed of seven years ago; getting that dream job at one of the biggest medical firms in Australia and finally having the chance to live that life Uche would always sing about in their rhymes – to sleep, wake up, eat, shit, and repeat.
Just Before everything went haywire!
He finally found that smartass beautiful girl he had always wanted who he was planning to marry. He was not even sure he loved her but she was all part of the dream.
So why was he really home especially after achieving his dream life?
His world wasn't here anymore and although he had six siblings, he had not heard a word of them in years.
One thing was sure though; after five years of escape to the end of the world Australia, he was home and back to the chaos he'd left.
There was already a rich looking young lady in the back seat of the car before he arrived and got into the front seat. She had just been busy with her phone all through, especially when the driver set his moving cubicle into motion. She looked like she had arrived from overseas too so he did not care to say hello.
They were on the road now with the driver whistling to some weird old 'bongo' song over the radio and soon Chad himself was lost in his own thoughts with his mind floating on the moon.
He remembered that particular night when that pretty white woman shot at him and how his heart beat faster and faster as he ran for his life and also that early morning when Senator Chris was assassinated with a snipe right before his son's eyes.
What about Uche? Where was he?
Who knows what had happened with Uche after that hell of a night, that same night at the conference when they were unfortunate victims of an out blown ' Medusa attack'.
He remembered 'The Vampire', his eyes were red as blood, his face tattooed to the eyeballs, his soul dark as hell.
How 'The Vampire' shot that rich old woman cold and Mac Donald their friend and classmate.
He still can not comprehend fully what had happened that night because it was overwhelming for a young teenager however, seven years ago that shit was so real.
Now his best friends Ronald, Uche and Chinny have now disappeared into thin air without trace.
'What the fuck happened to Life after that night?'
Maybe Ronald was supposed to disappear with his sister to be safe considering his dad had been assassinated and his mom murdered earlier but what about Uche?
He was suddenly jolted into full consciousness by the loud screeching of tires and forced breaks of the car and with his eyes open he beheld a group of men standing in front of their black Mercedes Benz all dressed in black with faces masked and silver pistols pointed at them!
"Oh here we go again," he almost muttered as waves of fear travelled down his spine.
He could hear the woman behind screaming;
"Jesus! Jesus! Sweet lawd!" As the driver tried to screech to a halt in the quickest possible time.
The wretched car wasn't helping, it was too late when the car had finally halted, it was right in front of those hefty masked men.
"Oga abeg..."
"Shut the fuck up and get out of the fucking car, mate." Their leader interrupted, his voice loud and clear.
Something strange about his accent though, like it was British or something.
It was surprisingly clean and seamless, and yes, definitely British, Chad noticed.
They were three in number, each fully covered with clothing - a tight black long-sleeved vase which revealed their appealing body features, dark camouflage pants, and bold military boots. He'd seen those before! Somewhere…
"Get the fuck out!" He yelled
The driver was a bit reluctant but the woman quickly let herself out through the back door, trying to escape or run or something, screaming with her hands in the air.
And then...
Kabooom!
A gunshot echoed! And in that second her body lay lifeless on the floor of the tarred highway with her blood drawing a map by her side.
It was a headshot!
The second one had quickly got to the other side of the vehicle where Chad was seated and pointed the silver pistols on to his head (The window had been whined down ever since they were faulty).
"Slowly..." the guy said with an evil low voice tone.
Chad couldn't even see clearly because somehow the lights from the Mercedes Benz headlamp was interfering with his vision.
He lifted his hands in the air slowly and made his way out of the vehicle as the man opened the door with the gun still pointed at him. The third one rushed to the corpse to take a look.
"It is her!" He cried,
"You fucking killed her, mate!" he shouted at the shooter.
"What the fuck are we to do now? You fucking killed her!"
"This is fucking over for us, do you understand that? We're fucking fucked!"
"Shut the fuck up, cunts! this is over when we're over yeah, and that means dead!" Their leader thundered back as he stepped towards them, his voice towering over theirs.
Chad was shivering in his bones and trying his best to stay calm now. He shut his eyes, trying to concentrate on his last prayers.
Kabooom!
Another gunshot echoed!
It must be me, I must be dead, Chad though to himself.
But no, it wasn't him, it was the cabman and another headshot!
Suddenly they were all interrupted by a loud honking of horns, two long trailers were approaching them at full speed with their headlamp lights tearing through the dark highway.
"Stop those motherfuckers!" The leader commanded and the one with the gun at Chad's head went to see to it.
Chad opened his eyes and saw that they were all at the center of a lonely highway with two high-speed trailers approaching them without showing signs of slowing down, the picture was clear and a disaster was inevitable! Chad had to think fast.
"No one is supposed to be on this road at this time, that was the fucking plan!" the cried “…They are not slowing down!"
"Aye, light them up!" the boss commanded and they turned and opened fire on the approaching trailers.
It was so loud and unbearable, Chad had to act now… there were bushes with dwarf grasses by the side of the road but what if snakes, Or lions? Or...
"Fuck it" he muttered as a wave of determination speared into him.
He soon found himself prostrated on the floor by the side of the road.. He couldn’t tell if he was the one who dived, Or flew, he just shut his eyes and ears with his whole forelimbs, lying face down to earth and praying to wake up from this nightmare.
It was too loud; sounds of gunshots, loud honking of trailer horns, screeching tires, and clasping of metal; those men must have been too distracted to notice his movement.
Then suddenly he heard the sound of human bones cracking, voices screaming and a loud crash of heavy metals almost sounding like a grenade explosion and then... there was absolute silence. Only the sound of a running trailer engine could be heard.
Is everyone dead?
Then he opened his eyes, looking around like in a slow-motion movie and observing that only a dim light illuminated the area. The headlamp lights were gone, he could smell some pungent gas in the air.
From his observation the police would think is was an accident scene but then he lived! Again!
He suddenly felt some creepily soft hand touch his shoulder and he thought his heart would stop from the jolt of fear that evaded him.
"Jesus Christ!" he jerked as he turned instinctively to see if it was a Lion, Snake, or a late-night demon?
"Chiadi Okorie!" the voice called in a soft, warm, and friendly tone.
Crap!
He knew that voice!
"Uche?" Chad answered with a sober, tear-filled voice, "Is that you?"
"No, it's not me, it is my grandmother's uncle, goat!"
Oh and just then, he knew it was truly his best friend Uche and for a while felt safe and relieved as he grabbed his friend in a warm hug.
But wait, what's he doing here? And how did he know he was coming home? And would be here at this moment?
"Thank God!" Chad heard himself saying as he took
"What's going on bro?" He asked as Uche breaks the hug, he hated hugs, he was homophobic but Chad didn't mind, his life had just been saved.
"What's happening"? Chad asked again.
"Senator Chris is alive," Uche replied bluntly.
Uche is never ever this bblun hence Chad felt his heart skip a beat. He knew that for Uche to be straight forward at telling him this, it meant that something as serious as death was lurking somewhere in the corner.
They both stared at each other for a while, they both knew what that sentence meant. It ran echoes in Chad's brains. It meant hell and death were on the brink of war and they were in for the long ride without a choice.
"What?"
UcheWhat did he mean by the question "what?”Chad had always been a smart ass right from those good old high school days. He was the role model then, the "good student", athletic and cute with those 'mickey mouse' glasses.Well, he was definitely not the best in terms of luck. Why would he come back at this time? When It's all fucked up."Well, I am fucked up too" Uche thought. His life had taken another turn after that fateful night and he was not to blame for it because he had just seen and experienced what many people spend their whole lives not experiencing together - love, fear, and death, all three in the same
After an hour of driving, they finally got to the city, the big city it was, big indeed. How long had it been since Chad last entered it? It was past 10pm and people were still moving about like it was 9am.The street lights were yellow and the buildings tall. The people were busy, as always, selling everything! with lamps and rechargeable touch lights. Hawkers running about with their goods in their hands, as agile as ever. The city was alive, as always. It brought back memories too, memories of how the three of them used to trek long distances just to get to the 'aboki' man's kiosk where that 'abacha' and 'boleh' women always were. They loved 'abacha!' - the African salad. And the way the woman used to bring them back every day with her magic 'abacha' was a mystery. The spice was so traditional and hot, mixed with that tasty 'ogbe' and lots of veggies and pepper. The roa
ChadHe could hear himself breathe weakly and gently, his senses were coming back to him.He didn't know where he was though, all he could see was a bright white light shinning into his eyes.He could perceive that mild antiseptic smell that was peculiar to hospitals, he hated it.Soon everything became clearer, the sounds became sharper. He felt so weak and tired and didn't even know why.He couldn't move for a while but although all he saw and heard was not clear yet, at least he remembered. He remembered the last thing that happened - he fell! And didn't know what Happened next. But here he was, lying on something soft in a place smelling like a hospital."Where am I?" he heard himself weakly speak."Husshhh..." he heard some feminine voice say. He felt some soft tender palm touch his hard hand.*
Maggie. She pressed the button as her white Mercedes Benz responded with a beep sound signifying it had been locked.Maggie nodded in satisfaction. She had clearly done her job excellently again. She is 'the Calvary', hasn't she always been? Many years ago, after her lone six years old daughter died of cancer and her husband deserted her she had dedicated her life to working for the Olukoyes. She literally owed the family everything she had and was.She had always been a petty street hacker living off people's carelessness. She used to somehow manage to steal people's ATM cards, hack their passwords and steal money from their accounts. She basically did nothing much with all that money. She would just use it to pay off all her debts because she was always in debt. She was an addicted gambler and would always loose but, was it not the environment that suited her hustle?
Uche"Maggie! Maggie!" Uche called, gently tapping her left shoulder and she slightly jerked back to life."Oh sorry. I was just... was just..." she paused and looked into uches eyes which were filled with so much worry and care."Never mind, I'm okay..." she patted his muscular chest slightly and walked away.He watched as she slowly walked into the doors of her restaurant. It was clearly labelled 'Maggie's Dishes'.It was almost totally constructed with glass. You could see the beautiful yellow and pink interior clearly from the outside. It was 7 am in the morning and the air was still fresh and cool. She'd been standing there staring at her white Mercedes Benz sports car in the parking lot for over ten minutes.'is she getting that old?' he wondered. He still remembered Maggie seven years ago - all fresh and sporty. RomaShe simply watched as the guy looked around the facility in awe. She was still admiring him or so – at least, still stealing stares and glances at him.He wasn’t all muscles and curves like Uche, but he wasn’t bad either. He was looking around, inspecting the computers and hardwares in the large room.It must have surprised him as it did her on her first day. All these complicated technology in one large room?It was really large and well lighted, filled with super power computers placed on several desks and some pretty large monitors lined up on the walls. It’s screens showing some coded languages of zeros and ones. There were glass walls separating the space into different compartments. And the central compartment was just composed of some giant hardware with tiny wires running all over it’s body, and tiny bulbs of electric light attached by
UcheHe was clearly having a head ache and had just recovered from a state of unconsciousness which was kicked off by the several heavy blows he’d received on his face. His body ached. They’d been tied up on separate chairs for some questioning, Maggie and himself.“we are the princes, others are bastards” he heard one of them say.“Don’t touch her please, I’ll give you whatever you want” he pleaded with a coarse voice. He could taste his blood in his mouth.“Really? “ another voice asked as another heavy blow landed on his jaws and he suddenly saw heavenly stars. The chair was metal and strong, and his hands taped together along with his whole body, glued to the chair. He couldn’t move. He could not help himself let alone, Maggie. It weakened his mind as it slowly recovered fr
ChadThe interior of the white range Rover sport was so comfy and brown. The cool air from the air conditioning system nullifying the effect of the hot Harmattan sun outside! But the vehicle;' It is too masculine for the hands controlling the steering' he thought. They'd just exited a magnificent boutique - House of Colors, and he was clearly feeling confident with himself again. They had dressed themselves up good, and for once she was looking like a feminine, and beautiful! She was clearly fun to be with. Always smiling and happy - at Least for the past hours he'd been with her.It was so fluid between them, the conversations weren't forced and the arguments, another story. He was happy and comfortable with her.'must be a rub - off of Uche, he thought. This wasn't really what he could say of his
EPILOGUE: ... it is still with a heavy heart that I, Chris Ronald, write to you, The United Nations. For the sake of the very lives that have been lost so far in this fight, this struggle for a sovereign state of Nigeria. I still fight, with only one hand and one leg. I refuse to remain silent. Please fulfill the promise you made to my late brother, Chiadi Okorie, the Fisheye, who gave his life in service for this purpose. Avenge us, I beseech you. Avenge Nigeria, for all our sakes. For I, only I, and a few others are still well and able to carry guns to go out into battle against Medusa. But if I go wit
RomaShe ran as fast as her feet could carry her carrying her long sniper bag where she had packed in her sniper and shouting;"Maggie!!" "Maggie!!" in fear! As she ran towards the center of the field. She had gotten Maggie's signal from the roof of the Catholic Church where she was well positioned with her sniper near the church bell. She had counted the men, they were four in number. She could take them all out in a go because the range wasn't too far.She had waited and switched the view into night mode, awaiting her signal just before ..."Maggie! Maggie!!" she called as she got to where Maggie was trying hard to keep standing. She had been shot twice around her lower abdomen and her hands were still there trying to put pressure on the bullet wound."Maggie listen to me, you've got to stay with me, do you understand?" she said grabbing Maggie in
MaggieIt was thick darkness. Only the sound of the rustling of leaves and creeping night insects could be heard. She glanced at her wrist watch, it was 9.02pm. But she stood there at the center of the large compound of St Patrick's Catholic church waiting, standing in front of her white Mercedes Benz, waiting for her meeting with the Medusa demon - the Vampire. They were two minutes late to the meeting, one she had arranged risking her very existence. The Vampire had contacted her demanding to know her status with the location of Fisheye. She had told them that she didn't have Fisheye, but she had something better - the flash drive! Hence, she set the meeting point and time. All her being yearned just for the Vampire! For Revenge! For justice for her daughter Rose! Her rape was the beginning of her downfall, after it her life was never the same ag
Ronald Here was the joy, that some people actually missed him, thought of him, and loved him. Chinny had literally jumped on him and Uche, for the very first time in his life, hugged him. Scorpion, who’d just been standing at some corner couldn’t help but smile at how happy they were. He’d been reluctant about the whole thing, but now he was okay. He only had a few more hours to spend in Nigeria as his pilot had confirmed he was already set at the airport awaiting their arrival so they could take off.But he didn’t want to and even scorpion saw it. He was happy. Very. They’d laughed and laughed about lots of things as Uche would tease him about his new appearance, his beard! And his well pronounced pink lips against a fair skin! They even ended up strolling into their former class, Goldstar (yellow), with the white lights completely illuminat
ChinnyThe heavens had shut their eyes, darkness had come, the night was here.It scared her, for who knew what darkness brought in it's mouthShe was supposed to be happy walking down the beautiful blue lobby of Springfield high with Uche, the father of her child, holding her hand and flashing his sweet dimpled smile at her. She was not. For heaven was falling and death was nigh. Medusa was coming, coming for all their souls, and she knew it. For everything had gone wrong, and the plan had shattered, it was game over in her calculations. She looked at the happy man, Uche, her love, and tears filled her eyes as he stood her on the balcony with himself - a place he used to give her chocolates and tell her his funny dreams of becoming the king of the world. King of the world indeed."Hey baybee." He began. "Are you crying?""yes" s
RomaShe opened her eyes in her weakness and immediately recognized she was in a hospital with blue walls, white mattresses, white light , and an antiseptic smell. For some reason, she never went totally unconscious, no. Not while the nurses took her in, not while they injected a drip into a brachial vein, not while they conversed amongst themselves saying;“she will be okay, just a little trauma and a few bruises here and there. She’ll be back soon. She just needs some rest”Now she was fully conscious and suddenly felt a surge of anxiety and adrenaline when it hit her;‘where is Cas’ mother?’She was supposedly brought in with her but on looking around at the few other beds in the empty ward, she was not there! So where could she be.She got up swiftly with caution not to make a noise and gain attention. She trudged to the door, staggering
The white range rover sport had exploded sending him into unconsciousness for a while. He had woken up to the face of the black Goliath staring at him.“Mother!” Chad called out as he saw his mother lying still on the red sand stained with blood.“she’s badly wounded” said the black Goliath“she needs a hospital. I’m going to rush her to the closest one!”“Wait! Let me go with you”“No! Save your strength. Find who did this!” the deep voice sounded as he lifted Mrs Okorie in his arms.“ Roma! Roma!” Chad called crawling to where she lay unconscious bathed in brown dust. She was swinging in between consciousness and unconsciousness. Only weak and tired but she seemed alright. He wasn’t sure, she might have an internal bleeding. However, she was mildly conscious.“He is going to rush you both to a hospital, you’re going to be alright.. “ he could hear the thumping of his heart. The two people he loved like hell were fig
ChinnyShe stared at him as he drove, thinking, wondering. If only she could explain to him everything, tell him her story, tell him all he didn’t know and how everything he thought was true wasn’t. But of course, he’s at it again, Uche fighting for all he loves, how cute. “what?” he smiled “ oh, nothing. You just didn’t change much that’s all” “ are you sure?” “yeah…” she gave a fake smile unsure of what next to say as her anxieties were getting the better of her. Her anxieties not because of Uche's presence, but because of the whole plan- the reason, the reason for her return. He didn’t know, no. He didn’t know how he was just a puppet in the master’s hands, playing on a field in which he has no control.A couple of years ago she had completed her masterpiece, Troy – a protocol she had developed to access literally anyth
RonaldWith Zayn Malik's 'good years' song playing softly on the radio, Ronald sat on the back seat of his BMW X6 with Scorpion who'd been driving for over 30 minutes now. He'd been lost and quiet for a while now still shocked at what had just happened as the lyrics of the song's chorus spoke loud in his heart, it said;"I'd rather be anywhere , anywhere but here..."With Dr Grant's blood stains still there on the clothing in his hands (he'd changed into a black polo and a black leather jacket) with him starring at it, lost, and remembering the past, all of it. He shouldn't be in the position to tell his best friend about his father's death, no one should. "where are we going to sir? We've been driving around aimlessly for over thirty minutes" scorpion started with his cold, light but crispy voice. No reply "sir..."
