<<Narrator>>
"Are you okay?" Xavier asked for the nth time that night and received the same response, "Yes, I am fine. Stop asking that."
"Just checking." He shrugged.
"Don't." Zoe rolled her eyes and huffed.
He knew that for the first time on this journey, she was less mad at him and more mad at the weather.
As they were stranded in the middle of nowhere with no idea how to call for help, the clear evening sky had turned cloudy and it had begun pouring in the matter of half an hour.
Zoe and Xavier had taken refuge in the car. Zoe sat with crossed arms, occasionally sighing at the weather in the driver seat and Xavier burned the battery of his useless phone while playing offline games.
They had no idea how long the weather was to continue and they couldn't go anywhere in that weather without being soaked to the bones. Which was why, they had no choice but to spend the night in the car.
It had been a long day, eating on the road and driving non-stop. Zoe didn't know when she felt sleep overtake her senses and her head rolled to the back of the bench-style seats as the pitter-patter of rain played music soothing music on the windows.
Xavier noticed Zoe dozing off and her neck placed at an awkward angle. He shuffled closer to her after making sure that she was truly asleep. Gently he pulled her towards him, enough to place her head on his shoulder. She immediately hugged his shoulder and snuggled in it. He smiled to himself as his heart skipped a beat. This was what his life was missing. Zoe. Her little actions only made him more steadfast in his quest to seek her forgiveness.
He wanted to stay guard but slowly, the darkness and the rain lulled him to sleep as well. Thus, on an empty road surrounded by woods in the middle of nowhere in the early hours of the night, Zoe and Xavier hugged each other to sleep inhaling each other's scent. Finally, their animals had the freedom to break the mental barrier and converse. A chance they were eager to take on.
A persistent knocking woke Zoe up. She got up with a start and hit her head on something pointy but warm. She looked up to see Xavier rubbing his chin. He was way too close for someone who was supposed to stay in the passenger seat at all costs as per the rules set before starting the journey.
She was about to pull away and get upset when the knocking came again. The rain seemed to have stopped. Then, a light shone from outside and hit Zoe, making her shield her eyes to see who was knocking on the window. It was an old man with an umbrella and a torch.
"Wait!" Xavier warned as Zoe went to roll her window down.
"What?" Zoe asked confused.
"He could be dangerous," Xavier said and they both were reminded of the dangers of rogues on empty roads.
"He is an old man," Zoe stated. She was sure he could be dangerous but she just stubbornly wanted to rebel against everything Xavier had to say. She had already taken his advice to stop for dinner and sleep last night. She wanted to prove to him that he was an Alpha in his pack but he held no power to order her, even when he hadn't ordered her anything since they started.
"Zoe-" Xavier started but Zoe had already rolled the window down.
"Are you sleeping her by choice or are you two stranded?" The old man asked in a sweet and humorous tone that conveyed that he knew they were indeed stranded.
"We are sleeping by choice. None of your business." Xavier answered simultaneously Zoe said, "We are stranded, sir."
Zoe and Xavier glared at each other while the old man laughed to himself softly, "Ah, young love."
Wanting to clarify that they were not a couple, Zoe opened her mouth but the old man beat her to it, "You are neither the first, and surely not the last people to get stranded here. This is a long road with no cell service."
"Then, what are you doing here?" Xavier asked suspiciously.
"I live in a cabin nearby. My son is a mechanic. We have fuel, too. For travelers." The old man told with a gentle smile and offered, "Looks like the clouds are not done here yet. If you don't want to spend the night cramped up in the car, you are welcome at my cabin."
"That's so kind of you, sir," Zoe said gratefully.
Xavier pulled her arm and whispered in her ear despite her resistance, "He is suspicious. Stop being so gullible. He looks like a human. Humans hunt our species, or have you forgotten history?"
"Stop breathing in my ear," She whisper-yelled back, covering the shudder that raked her body as his hot breath fanned her ear and neck, "And, he looks harmless. I remember history. But what can one human do compared to two of us?" She narrowed her eyes at him defiantly.
"I thought there was no us." Xavier raised a brow and smirked. It was probably not the right time but he was not going to let any chance slip.
She glared at him, "You know what I meant."
Then, she turned to the old man, "Sir, is it possible for your son to come here and fix our car? We would really rather be on our way as soon as possible. We have to get somewhere."
"He would, if he could. My son went to the next town for a job. He won't be back until noon tomorrow. You are welcome to wait until then at the cabin." He gave a sweet smile.
"Convenient," Xavier coughed making Zoe glare at him while sending a fake smile to the old man.
A strike of lightning brightened up the night sky before thunder roared and Zoe closed her eyes. She cursed in her head.
'What's wrong?' Dahlia asked worried.
"I'm scared of the thunder and lightning. I never grew out of it since childhood." Zoe told her and tried to keep her breathing under control but she knew it was a failed attempt. She used to spend such thunderstorms snuggled in her bed with her father as a kid wearing headphones to cancel out all noise. And then, it was Maisie who was usually always there to prevent Zoe's panic attacks that resulted from this fear.
"Zoe? Are you okay?" Xavier asked but this time, she did not have it in her to open her eyes, let alone get annoyed at his question.
>Zoe held on to Xavier's hand as tightly as she could and let him lead her.Xavier was worried about Zoe but he had never been more grateful for a thunderstorm before in his life. Moon Goddess was on his side. He could feel it. And was ready to take full advantage of the given chance. The old man led them through a barely existent path in the woods using the light from his torch. The rain was resuming a sprinkle."How far is the cabin?!" Xavier asked, worried for Zoe. She was holding his hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Any normal person wouldn't have been able to take the power of fear coursing through her. Each time the thunder sounded, she shuddered. Zoe was trying her best not to cry. She didn't want to be seen as weak but her panic attack was inevitable. She just wanted to be indoors when she finally lost it."Just around the bend in the path." The old man answered without looking back. Xavier rolled his eyes. He was still wary of the old man. "Yeah, w
>The dinner was delicious. Zoe quietly sipped on her mushroom soup, but Xavier looked everywhere for clues. He had seen many shady people in his life and this old man was very shady. A lot of things he said did not match what Xavier was seeing around the cabin. The place was too well-kept for an old man's cabin in the woods. "So, your son's a mechanic?" Xavier started with small talk."Yes." The old man gave a short answer and focused on the toasted cheesy garlic bread on his plate. "Why settle in the woods where rarely any car passes? Why not get a job at some workshop in the town?" Xavier pushed casually."The road busier than you imagine. This is our family cabin. My grandfather built it. My ancestors were gatherers. Woods worked in our favor for generations. It was only honorable to stay." The old man did not meet Xavier's eyes while answering and Xavier found that odd. Usually, liars don't look in the eyes while talking.Xavier let Spike sniff out any suspicious s
>Zoe and Xavier were done having breakfast when a boy, a few years younger than Xavier walked in, wiping greasy hands on his dirty apron. "Morning everyone." He said cheerfully. His father immediately got up and started getting coffee ready for his son while the boy nodded at the guests before going to his room to change. He returned a few minutes later and received the steaming cup of coffee from his father before taking his seat at the breakfast table."The car is all fixed up and ready to drive many miles." The boy said to Zoe and Xavier."What was wrong with it?" Xavier asked keenly, trying to read the boy and his intentions."The electronics were fried, among other things. Happens in modified older models." The boy said and started buttering a slice of fresh bread. Zoe got up to get the coat she was wearing last night from the guest room. Before anyone could say anything else, the old man placed a piece of paper in front of Xavier, who looked quizzically at the old m
>The sun had gone down when the car took a U-turn and headed to the coordinates on the unopened envelope Zoe was carrying in her bag. The envelope had the same seal as was carved on the wooden box from which the envelope had been taken. The mysterious intricate patterns meant nothing to Zoe or Xavier as neither had come across anything like that before. The coordinates led them to an elite nightclub that required either a membership or some very expensive tickets. They waited in the parking lot to come up with a plan.Zoe was confused. Why would her mother give the address of a nightclub to her little daughter? Xavier had gone to make a few calls and Zoe decided to do some research."We should go. Check in a hotel or something. We need more information. There is no way your mother wanted you to come to a nightclub in Kansas." Xavier said what had been going through Zoe's head already. She pulled out of the parking lot without responding to him. She was curious about who he
>"I'm going to shower," Zoe announced as soon as they entered their hotel room.Xavier smirked to himself and walked over to the window that looked over the neighborhood. It wasn't a bad view. With hands in his pocket, he stood deep in thought. He had a lot to think about. He knew abandoning his pack to go after this mate was a complicated idea but he didn't expect it to have such an effect on his pack. The calls he made earlier had worried him. But he didn't want to let Zoe know anything. She had been eager to send him away from the start and they were finally making some progress.Zoe stripped down and let the hot shower water wash her fatigue away. She stood there with her eyes closed, lost in thought. She had a lot to think about. She was far from home. Where was home anyway? She couldn't possibly return to her either of old packs to stay like before. A blurred image flashed in her mind. It was a woman in a blue flower dress, mid-length, flowing in wind. The woman had
>The next morning, Zoe woke up snuggling to something hard yet warm. It couldn't be a pillow, she thought. Xavier woke up before Zoe. It was the most beautiful morning he had in a while. It was also the most peaceful he had slept in a while. He admired her as she slept. Her head nuzzled in his chest, her arm wrapped on his torso under the blanket and their legs intertwined like they were where they belonged. Their animals had been in bliss for hours. Of course, their humans sleeping beside each other wasn't enough to quench their thirst for each other, but it was a start.Xavier felt Zoe stir. Her heartbeat picked up pace and she felt around his torso. He smiled to himself at her involuntary touch before he relaxed and closed his eyes, pretending to still be asleep.Zoe opened her eyes, groggily before she was slapped awake by the fact that she was hugged THE XAVIER SHAW in her sleep. How had she ended up in the bed with him? So many thoughts ran through her head. She loo
>The couple of mates had been driving for a good part of the night. They stopped for a few hours to rest their eyes in the car and were back on the road by dawn.By noon they were standing in front of a graffitied backdoor to a very inconspicuous-looking building in a very questionable neighborhood. "Are you sure this is the address?" Zoe asked."Yes, Zoe, for the thirtieth time today, I am sure." Xavier resisted his urge to roll his eyes at his adorable mistrusting mate."Then what are you waiting for? Knock." Zoe ordered and Xavier held back a grin. He loved the little things that were getting normalized between them. She wasn't pushing him away anymore. She hadn't joked with him yet but was getting comfortable around him. He could sense it."As my beautiful mate commands," Xavier smirked making Zoe roll her eyes.Xavier had barely knocked when the slot in the door slid open a pair of dark eyes stared back from within, "State your business." said a guy in a gruff voice.
>Xavier, Zoe, and sat quietly looking at each other waiting for the other to begin. So much had happened since the last time they had seen each other, and not all was good which made conversation hard. The girls could see how much the other had changed. Maisie started on a lighter note, "So, are you two together, together?""We are mates.""Not at all!"Xavier's confession was followed by Zoe's negation. Maisie's face expressed a mixture of confusion and amusement over their indecision, and surprise at Xavier's confession."Are you mates or not?" Maisie prodded amused."Yes, of course.""It's complicated."Again, Xavier's confession was contrasted with Zoe's answer."Complicated is better than not at all. I'd call that progress." Xavier smirked and sat back in his chair satisfied.Zoe bit her tongue, deciding not to add fodder to the canon pointed her way. Instead, she turned the conversation towards Maisie, "So, where have you been? How have you been? What are you doing h
>Zoe and Xavier were about to head to the hotel they were staying at when they received a text from Maisie. They chose to go to her first since she couldn't leave her sanctuary. She had been very vague about who was after her and why. Zoe didn't press because she knew how hard some traumas affected people and one needed time to be able to talk about some things."Hey, how did it go? I was starting to get worried when I didn't receive any update." Maisie started as soon as Zoe and Xavier entered through the door of her new space."Unexpected," Zoe said."That's one word for it," Xavier said as he sat on a much cleaner couch than Maisie had previously."What happened to the old dump?" Zoe asked as she sat beside Xavier and looked around Maisie's new space."All thanks to your mate," Maisie said and before Zoe could complain about that relationship, Maisie said to Xavier gratefully, "I don't know what you said to the landlord, but he has never been this nice. It's almost susp
>As I picked up the khaki letter Lady Chihiro had given me, she sarcastically advised, "I'd suggest reading the first letter before reading this one."It took me a moment to understand what her words implied. When I did, my eyebrows raised in surprise and disbelief, "Wait a minute! Did my mother write this letter?"She sat back satisfied and smirked, "You reached that conclusion all on your own. I didn't say anything. And I will neither affirm nor deny that assumption." But I was not satisfied. I needed answers. How could my mother be sure that I'd choose to come at the club? Lady Chihiro was good at guessing my thoughts through my facial expressions. So, she said, "Go home Zoe Simmons, and read the letters in peace," She paused before adding, "Preferably alone."Talking about Xavier, I realized that he was probably still with all those guards in the waiting room."Xavier is my mate," I had no idea where the sudden protectiveness came from but I had the urge to defend h
>The conversation had taken a turn that I was not comfortable with. Given Lady Chihiro's judgy looks, I contemplated telling her that I had received that letter fairly recently. My mother probably hadn't expected my Dad to hide the whole box away while I grew up motherless and wolfless. And that was the reason why I hadn't had much time to prepare myself to read what were possibly my Mom's last words to me.To turn the conversation in the direction that I was interested in, I asked, "What's with all the Lycan decor? I'm guessing it is more than just interior designing." "Of course, not." Lady Chihiro spoke as if my words had offended her and answered proudly, "All of us at Base Dark Moon take our Lycan lineage very seriously. In a world crawling with vicious Werewolves, cunning witches, and deceptive humans, one only has our kin to lean on. Lycans have always been closely knit packs. Closer than most wolves, one might even say."I furrowed my brows in confusion. She talke
>Walking inside the room I felt like I had just stepped through a time machine or a portal that teleported me centuries back in time. The walls seemed to be carved out of huge stones that had probably withstood the test of time. Claw markings on the walls and low-hanging cast-iron chandeliers gave the whole place a dark and mysterious aura. The electrical circuits seemed to have been installed after construction as if after their invention."Impressive, isn't it?" I jumped at the remark and closed my mouth that had opened in awe of the place.I looked to my right, where the calm voice had come from, and saw the elderly lady from earlier sitting behind a huge mahogany table with carvings of Lycans like Dahlia and celestial bodies intertwined with vines and markings that looked, unlike any language I had ever known. The lady had a softness in her eyes that she didn't have earlier when she was interrogating me and Xavier. I noticed that my necklace was placed neatly on the t
>Zoe glanced at Xavier from the corner of her eye but the elder lady's authoritative glare rooted her on the spot. She didn't know what to tell. She barely had any memories of her mother. All she did have was an unopened letter, which she still hadn't had the courage to open yet. So, how could she explain why she had taken extreme measures to enter such a tightly secured and secret establishment?"I don't have all day." The elder lady raised an impatient brow expectantly."Who am I answering to, ma'am." Zoe tried to buy some time in vain."I am the one in charge of your fate. So, be quick with your answers, and don't try to be smart with me." The elderly woman had not raised her voice; somehow, her calm was more threatening, "Let's start with your and her name."Zoe took a deep breath and a desperate leap of faith, "I am Zoe Simmons. Daughter of Joe and Aroosa Simmons." Saying her mother's name felt weird. Especially, after how far her father had gone to make sure that no
>Xavier and Zoe exchanged glances. Were they supposed to make up a good lie? Improvise? Or tell the truth? No, truth seemed to be the worst option. How could they explain anything to humans when they had so many unanswered questions? The receptionist tapped her pen on her notepad impatiently."What do we do?" Zoe asked through the mind link desperately."I have a plan. Just go with what I say, okay?" Xavier replied."Ma'am-" Before Xavier could have another word out, the receptionist's facial expression and body language changed."What are you?" She asked almost threateningly."Excuse me, I don't-" Xavier started but was interrupted again."No! No stories or lies. Don't you dare. Do you even know where you are?" She stood up. Her eyes were cold. They were two against one in the room, and one of them was the youngest Alpha Councilor, yet the receptionist was more intimidating. "Enlighten us," Zoe stood up as well, followed by Xavier. Things were escalating and not in a fri
>Zoe turned the door handle, her stomach was in knots due to the anticipation. She pushed it open to reveal a set of stairs going down. She stepped forward followed closely by Xavier. Slowly they descended until they stood face to face an elevator. She pressed the button to call the elevator. The few moments of the wait were the longest that they had waited in their lives. The elevator arrived and dinged open. They stepped in and Xavier noticed a camera in the corner with a beeping red light. They were being watched. Zoe noticed the elevator had options for four floors, one, two, three, and the last button with the same seal as on the door that got them there. Instantly, Zoe pressed that button. To their surprise, a voice sounded from the elevator confirming Xavier's conclusion that they were being watched."What will happen if a pair of Moonstones is found?" A female voice asked. Zoe nearly jumped and looked around, "Who is it?"Xavier nudged her, motioned for the camera,
>Xavier and Zoe got out of the car, handed the keys to the valet, and walked over to the entrance like they owned the place. There was no queue. Either you were a member and walked right in, or you weren't a member and had to buy an extremely expensive ticket online on the possibility that you might be let in. Xavier had gotten two VIP tickets under fake names and was directed to enter through a non-member lobby. They stopped at a receptionist who asked them to wait so they could confirm their identities."What if they find out?" Zoe dared to open the mind-link between their mind spaces for the first time. She was not ready to give herself up until she found anything that she came for.Xavier was pleasantly surprised to hear Zoe in his head. He glanced at her and she yelled in his head, "Look ahead!"He resisted flinching and replied, "They can't hear us but that doesn't mean you get to yell at me in my head.""Sorry," Zoe whispered."Okay, you don't need to whisper eith
>"I hope you don't intend to go in that." Xavier walked out of the bathroom, dressed in an expensive clubbing attire and ready to leave while Zoe was still in her sweats, working on her makeup."What's it to you?" She replied awkwardly while stretching her mouth to put mascara on her curled lashes."Why are you making that face?" He asked as he stepped closer with a childish curiosity mixed with humor."Again, what's it to you?" She replied with a roll of her eyes and then cussed under her breath when the wet mascara smeared on her upper eyelid because of her rolling eyes.Xavier laughed and Zoe glared at him. They were like an old married couple but hadn't realized it yet."Why are you here? Are you ready?" Zoe asked annoyed."What's that supposed to mean?" Xavier twirled and flipped his coat with a smirk, offended that she didn't think he was ready."What's gotten into you?" Zoe asked confused at his carefree behavior."What do you mean? I'm going clubbing with my mate f
