The next morning, Zoe woke up snuggling to something hard yet warm. It couldn't be a pillow, she thought.

Xavier woke up before Zoe. It was the most beautiful morning he had in a while. It was also the most peaceful he had slept in a while. He admired her as she slept. Her head nuzzled in his chest, her arm wrapped on his torso under the blanket and their legs intertwined like they were where they belonged. Their animals had been in bliss for hours. Of course, their humans sleeping beside each other wasn't enough to quench their thirst for each other, but it was a start.

Xavier felt Zoe stir. Her heartbeat picked up pace and she felt around his torso. He smiled to himself at her involuntary touch before he relaxed and closed his eyes, pretending to still be asleep.

Zoe opened her eyes, groggily before she was slapped awake by the fact that she was hugged THE XAVIER SHAW in her sleep.

How had she ended up in the bed with him? So many thoughts ran through her head. She loo

    >The couple of mates had been driving for a good part of the night. They stopped for a few hours to rest their eyes in the car and were back on the road by dawn.By noon they were standing in front of a graffitied backdoor to a very inconspicuous-looking building in a very questionable neighborhood. "Are you sure this is the address?" Zoe asked."Yes, Zoe, for the thirtieth time today, I am sure." Xavier resisted his urge to roll his eyes at his adorable mistrusting mate."Then what are you waiting for? Knock." Zoe ordered and Xavier held back a grin. He loved the little things that were getting normalized between them. She wasn't pushing him away anymore. She hadn't joked with him yet but was getting comfortable around him. He could sense it."As my beautiful mate commands," Xavier smirked making Zoe roll her eyes.Xavier had barely knocked when the slot in the door slid open a pair of dark eyes stared back from within, "State your business." said a guy in a gruff voice.

    >Xavier, Zoe, and sat quietly looking at each other waiting for the other to begin. So much had happened since the last time they had seen each other, and not all was good which made conversation hard. The girls could see how much the other had changed. Maisie started on a lighter note, "So, are you two together, together?""We are mates.""Not at all!"Xavier's confession was followed by Zoe's negation. Maisie's face expressed a mixture of confusion and amusement over their indecision, and surprise at Xavier's confession."Are you mates or not?" Maisie prodded amused."Yes, of course.""It's complicated."Again, Xavier's confession was contrasted with Zoe's answer."Complicated is better than not at all. I'd call that progress." Xavier smirked and sat back in his chair satisfied.Zoe bit her tongue, deciding not to add fodder to the canon pointed her way. Instead, she turned the conversation towards Maisie, "So, where have you been? How have you been? What are you doing h

    >Maisie didn't know where to start or how much to tell, but it was about time someone knew what she had been through. She needed to share that, and who better to share it with than her best friend and the Alpha who had saved her once?Maisie had spent the night in horror and cold. Alone in a cabin in the woods waiting for the one person who had risked his life to save her. He had gone to get firewood and scout the area at dusk. He had strictly told her to stay indoors and not to come out no matter what she heard outside. She might not have gotten along with him but she trusted him to keep her safe. Which is why she listened to him and stayed put. She couldn't sleep. Wolves kept howling in the night and she wasn't sure if they were pure animals or werewolves. It was terrifying to be alone and not knowing what happened to her friend or her father.Maisie knew what risk she was taking by revealing her half-witch ancestry in the tribunal but she hadn't expected t

    >Zoe and Xavier listened to the detailed account of events that Maisie had gone through with full attention. Zoe worried about her friend and pitied everything Maisie had to go through. Zoe blamed herself for pulling Maisie into her problems. After all, Maisie had to give up such a grave secret in front of so many people because Zoe's father's life was on the line. Xavier, on the other, was worried about his friend just as much as he was worried about Maisie. At least, Maisie had made it. Xavier had often checked with Jacob (his secretary) about Luca and nobody had heard anything since Maisie and Luca had escaped from the Werewolf Council Headquarters after Mr. Simmons' case."Maze. How did you get away from them?" Zoe asked softly. Maisie sighed and didn't meet the eyes of her friend. It was hard enough thinking about that. But talking about it all made it more real and unbearable."I'm not exactly sure what happened next. I swear, I just closed my eyes for a second. I

    >"I thought you were taking me out of this jungle. Did you just bring me to your home? Or the center of the jungle?" Maisie asked confused but stepped closer nonetheless. The roots of the huge tree were spread on the forest floor. The moment Maisie accidentally stepped on a protruding root and slipped, falling face-first to the forest floor. She tried to hold something in vain. There was nothing to stop her from falling as she saw the ground get closer. Again, she closed her eyes but tried not to scream. Screaming had brought her problems so far.She fell, but instead of hard and moist ground, she felt a soft, dry, furry rug on her face. It still hurt but not as much as falling into the insect-infested forest floor might have.Confuzzled, Maisie opened her eyes and quickly got up only to stop stunned. She was now in a different location. The open jungle had vanished and she now stood in a cozy cottage that looked very normal at first glance. Then, she noticed the brown bir

    >"Oh, my Goddess! MJ!" Zoe rushed to her friend as the tale became progressively traumatic and hugged her.Xavier let Zoe comfort her friend. He knew Zoe could comfort Maisie better than him. Maisie had been through some serious shit and the tale seemed far from over.Zoe realized that it all must've been awful for Maisie but as she had hugged her friend, Maisie seemed too calm and collected. Zoe hoped it was just a trauma response that would go away with time and not something that her circumstances had permanently turned her kind friend into."Maybe that's enough for now. Let's get out of here. Talk somewhere more," Xavier suggested and glanced around the small space before uneasily adding, "Cleaner."His words got the girls out of their embrace.Maisie looked at Xavier, "AlphaXS34, huh?" She gave a tiny smile."Cornhead24, huh?" Xavier returned."What's going on?" Zoe asked confused about the interaction."I told you I met someone who claimed to be of help on the dark we

    >Not thinking of anything to change the subject, Xavier blurted out, "We need to find a way to get into a human-only club. Can you do that?" Maisie and Zoe turned to look at him like, 'Seriously? Is now the right time?'He raised his hands in surrender, "Sorry."'Yeah, like an apology is going to fix it.' Spike sneered in Xavier's head."What do you want now?" Xavier said to him annoyed.'Don't come at me now. The girl is right. Anyone would feel abandoned. Zoe left her in our responsibility and look what happened.' Spike tried to knock some sense into Xavier.Maisie had turned her back to them once again and started to sort random objects on a shelf as if to distract herself from their presence."Maisie, we are truly sorry for what happened to you." Zoe started and urged Xavier to continue, "And we want to try and make amends, as hard as it might be.""It starts with you coming back to us. I missed you." Zoe added."What part of I can't leave can you two not understand?"

    >Xavier returned after two hours, to find the girls in a strange way."Okay, someone catch me up. That's not how I left you, girls." Xavier sauntered in, his relaxed gait turned into confusion, "What's going on here?"Zoe and Maisie were sitting on the floor after having cleared some space, as impossible as that seemed. Zoe, for some strange reason, had changed into rags similar to Maisie's and was holding hands over a large bronze bowl that had some weird stuff in it.Maisie was holding a ceremonial blade with a rune carved in its handle and was about to chant something when they were disturbed by Xavier."Where have you been for the past two hours?" Maisie asked in return."I asked first." Xavier challenged, still eyeing the whole setup suspiciously."We are doing the ritual that you came for." Maisie said in a matter-of-fact tone. "I don't remember coming here for any ritual." Xavier retorted."Well, you want to get into a human-only club and this is the way to it. So,

    >I had sirens blaring in my head but I had to keep calm. If Lady Shaw was truly not on Xavier’s side, then I had to tread very carefully.First and foremost, I had to make sure that the suspicion was right or not. If I was right to be suspicious of her, I needed to gather evidence. I couldn’t just put empty blame on her. Xavier would never believe me over her.But I desperately prayed to the Moon Goddess that I was wrong and Lady Shaw had a perfect explanation of how she knew about the documents. Maybe Xavier had told her and I had nothing to worry about. She was looking at me expectantly, waiting for an answer.I tried to calm my heart rate and asked as casually as I could muster, “What documents?”“The ones that made that ink smear on your fingertips, leave that table mark under your wrists, and left the charging port on for the laptop that you hid in a hurry.” She explained calmly with a slightly amused tone.I glanced at my fingertips and indeed, even though I had tri

    >“So, where did you learn how to cook?” Lady Shaw asked as she stirred the boiling pot of soup I was making for dinner.“Mostly my Dad and Aunt Julie. She was Dad’s cousin, used to live with us. Some I learned from experimenting with MJ,” I was instinctively going to add that some I learned for my ex John because he preferred home-cooked meals, but that asshole did not deserve a mention. She took a small spoon and tasted the soup. Subconsciously, I held my breath waiting for her reaction. She took her time and the knife in my hand hovered over the fresh coriander that she had brought.“It’s good,” She smiled in affirmation, and I let out a tiny sigh of relief. Her approval was important to me for some reason. I didn’t know if she knew that I was Xavier’s mate or not, but this was the second time I was meeting her and I did not want to disappoint her. I did not have many special skills but I knew I could trust my cooking and self-defense.“It’s Dad’s recipe,” I couldn’t ke

    >Talking to MJ had not only brightened my mood and given me something to think about, it had also lightened the weight off of my heart. I was still troubled, but it had given me a morale boost that I desperately needed. Especially after having Dahlia locked up for a night. She had given me a new perspective on things. She was more courageous than me. After all, we were in similar predicaments, on the run, hiding from powerful, evil people. But she was stuck in a shabby, questionable place. In that sense, I was better off than her. And yet, she had the strength to laugh about everything like it was just a big joke that life was playing on us.Telling her about everything had rejuvenated me and the conversation had left me energized and ready to tackle my problems again. I had a lot of work to do. There was stuff left by Mom and Aunt Julie, not to mention, that mysterious journal we had retrieved from our Riverwoods torturers along with that weird key. Thus after my early m

    >"Speculum magicae plenum excantatum, ostende mihi unum ex altera parte," I chanted after I had dropped a droplet of my blood on the back of the silver embossed hand mirror.Instantly the mirror started moving as if I had poured water on it and started rippling in circles. While it did its magic, I had a thought, "Dahlia?"'Uhuh,' She called out watching the mirror with more attention than me."How did the barrier break? I thought I'd feel something like that but I didn't. I mean I felt the silence when it was created." I mused.'Yes, you did. You were just so preoccupied that you didn't realize it immediately.' She confirmed and I was confused."How? When?"'When you were by the lake.' She answered as if it was obvious and then explained, 'Agitation creates barriers, tranquility breaks them down.'I realized then that when I had felt the wind blow through me, it was more in my head than in real life. My mind space was whole again."Wait a minute," I said to her, "If you

    >I woke up to silence. It was an unfamiliar and unwelcome feeling. In recent months, I had gotten used to having Dahlia in my head and commenting on most of my thoughts. I liked her companionship even though we didn't always get along. But I guess that is how most shifters are with their animals.I tried to call out to her once more before giving up and getting ready for my morning run. My mother's letter was still swirling in my head. What could it all mean? Everything felt mysteriously important. As I stepped into the woods, the thought of the dehydrated Claire, starving in the cabin's basement made me stop. I glanced toward the hatch. She had been an awful person even before I knew what she was capable of. But was I the person who lets people get punished worse than animals? But then, I had my hands red with the compound mass-massacre. I had the blood of so many innocents on my hands. I wasn't any better.Just like that the pit in the bottom of my stomach returned. I s

    >All I wanted since I was a little girl, was to have my wolf. I just wanted to be included at school and be treated like normal werewolf cubs. But the more I waited the worse it felt when I didn't receive my wolf. I became more and more desperate and impatient. I started losing friends until there was none but Maisie. And when I had accepted the fact that even though I was a beta's daughter, I was a wolfless omega but social hierarchy, Dad died. That triggered my dormant animal whom I found out to be more than a regular wolf. I had a hybrid of a Lycan and a werewolf. After having accepted that I would spend my life alone because wolfless meant mateless as well, I was finally complete. I had an animal and she was powerful and magnificent. Yes, I struggled with her. I was unable to transform at will. I was also finding it impossible to create a mental barrier between our shared mental space to give each other some much-needed privacy from each other. Because even though we

    >There was blood everywhere and I was so angry. I could see the corpse of my father laying in the pool of his blood, motionless. It was heartbreaking. But it only made me upset. I had left my home pack. I had tried to build a new life, gotten a new job, tried to make new friends, and hoped to lay low. But then, Xavier Shaw had returned and he had kidnapped me. I know he meant well by showing me what a rotten man Richard Peterson was. But, that had only gotten my father to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. And it had gotten him killed. Richard had killed my dad. Emptied his gun in my Dad's chest. I felt movement behind me and whirled around, only to see that Richard had gotten another gun and was pointing it at me.I saw him through Dahlia's vision, looking down on him. >'We should leave now, Zoe.' Dahlia said firmly.I turned to face Claire once more. She was skinnier than I remembered and had dried blood all over her body. Her nails were broken but her smirk was still there."Ask. You know you are dying to know." She said like she knew what was going on in my head.'Zoe, walk away. We cannot trust a word coming from her.' Dahlia kept telling me. If I knew how to block her, I might've."Xavier loved you. Why did you betray him?" I finally asked."She speaks," Claire mocked.'Zoe,' Dahlia warned."Answer me," I tried to ask firmly."You haven't done this before, have you? Interrogation is an art. You should learn it from your beloved. Xavier knows how to paint a body red." She mused but ended up coughing probably due to her dry throat."He wouldn't have to if you hadn't betrayed him," I replied. She didn't know how much I knew and I intended to keep it that way. But I was barely thinking straight."Oh look at the little fawn defending th

    >I ran through the woods, trying to clear my head as always. For the first time in my life, it wasn't working. The feeling of Xavier's lips on my neck, his hands on my body, his presence around me. It was all overwhelming my senses. I could still smell his cologne. When had I started to get so horny for him to start having such dreams?I ran faster and took a U-turn to return to the cabin. Jacob had been very adamant about me staying close to the cabin as much as possible. He had wanted me to stay indoors at all times, but that was not going to be an option for me. So, I was granted a few liberties. I was not going to misuse those. While returning, I decided to take one last lap around the cabin before going in to shower and getting to read my hard work from yesterday, finally. That was when I noticed something different. A certain part of the ground was covered by the bushes more thickly than the rest. If I didn't know any better I would say it looked like an attempt to
