<<Narrator>>
The dinner was delicious. Zoe quietly sipped on her mushroom soup, but Xavier looked everywhere for clues.
He had seen many shady people in his life and this old man was very shady. A lot of things he said did not match what Xavier was seeing around the cabin. The place was too well-kept for an old man's cabin in the woods.
"So, your son's a mechanic?" Xavier started with small talk.
"Yes." The old man gave a short answer and focused on the toasted cheesy garlic bread on his plate.
"Why settle in the woods where rarely any car passes? Why not get a job at some workshop in the town?" Xavier pushed casually.
"The road busier than you imagine. This is our family cabin. My grandfather built it. My ancestors were gatherers. Woods worked in our favor for generations. It was only honorable to stay." The old man did not meet Xavier's eyes while answering and Xavier found that odd. Usually, liars don't look in the eyes while talking.
Xavier let Spike sniff out any suspicious scents but the cabin smelled homely. The food was nice. The fire helped warm up the whole place. The pajamas were soft and the chairs were comfortable. The chinaware and silverware seemed expensive.
There were too many dishes and side dishes for just the three of them. They were done before they could finish everything.
Once they were done, the old man led Xavier to his son's room to sleep in for the night while Zoe took the guest room. Thankfully, the rain had softened and thunder was almost negligible.
"You sure, you're going to be alright?" Xavier asked for the nth time.
"I'll be fine," Zoe said firmly despite Dahlia telling her that it was safer to stay by their mate's side. But Zoe needed some time alone.
Xavier paced in his room, unable to sleep because of multiple reasons. He had no contact with the rest of his pack. He had barely made any progress with his mate. Zoe's fear of thunders was new to him and he didn't understand why she would react like that. He had no way of making sure what awaited them at the coordinates that Zoe was hell-bent on following. His beta, Lucas, hadn't contacted them for months. After helping Zoe's best friend, Maisie, escape from her captivity at the Werewolf Council, they had gone dark. Xavier had no idea what his father was doing or if Councilor Peterson had found out about the Blood Cresent's involvement in his only son's death. Or if anyone knew about Zoe. On top of it all, their old host seemed suspicious for reasons that Xavier had not been able to find out.
His eyes landed on the wooden wardrobe in the room.
If something suspicious was going on, he was sure to find it in the old man's son's things. Xavier walked over and tried to open the wardrobe but it was locked.
Of course, why would anyone leave their stuff open for strangers to go through? Xavier tried the drawers in tables. Only one was open and it had nothing out of the ordinary. Just a stapler, a pencil sharpener, a pack of tissues, a screwdriver, an empty writing pad, a folded calendar for the ongoing month, an alarm clock, and a roll of duct tape. A strange assortment of items but not suspicious.
He walked over and peeked outside the room. The old man was snoring slightly on the couch beside the fireplace. Zoe's room's door was closed and he couldn't hear any movement. She was probably asleep. He closed the door, sighed, and sat on the bed, disappointed.
Finally, the day's fatigue took over and he fell asleep.
The next morning, the couple woke up to delicious smells wafting through the cabin.
Xavier and Zoe opened their doors simultaneously and looked at each other confused before walking into the living area.
"Ah, you are awake. Great. The breakfast is almost ready and my son is back." The old man was cheerful.
"Where is he?" Xavier asked before Zoe could.
"He is down the road, taking a look at your car." The old man said while pouring scrambled eggs into a beautiful glass plate.
"I didn't hear anyone come in." Xavier mused his suspicions while Zoe said softly, "He should've rested a bit. He must be tired, traveling overnight."
"Don't worry dear, he can rest later. He's got all day to rest." The old man didn't respond to Xavier. Then, he smiled at them, "The bath is drawn for whoever wants to go first." He pointed at the bathroom door that they were too preoccupied last night to notice or need.
Bath? Zoe thought. Why did an old man and his son living in a cabin in the woods have a bath? She shook her head to get rid of the thoughts and said, "I'll go first." She glanced at Xavier, "If you don't mind."
"Not at all." Xavier nodded and walked over to the old man while Zoe took her clean and ironed clothes from last night and went to take the bath. She was surprised to find accessories like bath salts, oils, bath bombs, unlit candles and lighters, and even a magazine in the bathroom. She had never met any man who used such products. Shrugging all red lights blaring in her mind by Dahlia, Zoe undressed and allowed herself to indulge in a warm bubble bath. She knew she deserved it after everything she had been through lately.
"You always bake fresh bread?" Xavier asked the old man who seemed to have baked fresh bread while the two were asleep.
"Oh yes. It's such a hassle getting baked bread from the town every day and I like cooking and baking. Keeps me busy." Once again, it didn't escape Xavier's notice of how the old man refused to meet Xavier's eyes.
Xavier tried to ask a few more questions to the old man but he seemed to have practiced his responses and had answers to everything that Xavier threw at him.
Zoe returned and Xavier went to shower.
"Let me help with that," Zoe said and started helping the old man set the breakfast table for four.
Once Xavier had freshened up and dressed himself, they all sat at the breakfast table.
"Aren't we going to wait for your son?" Zoe asked as the old man started serving them breakfast.
"Oh, we don't know how long it will take him to fix the car. Let's eat before everything gets cold. Then, you can go ahead and take a look at the car yourself. Though you are welcome to stay as long as you like. We rarely have any guests."
'Doubt that,' Said Dahlia and Spike to Zoe and Xavier simultaneously.
But they dug in the delicious spread of breakfast which seemed hard for one old man to have prepared by himself so early in the morning.
>Zoe and Xavier were done having breakfast when a boy, a few years younger than Xavier walked in, wiping greasy hands on his dirty apron. "Morning everyone." He said cheerfully. His father immediately got up and started getting coffee ready for his son while the boy nodded at the guests before going to his room to change. He returned a few minutes later and received the steaming cup of coffee from his father before taking his seat at the breakfast table."The car is all fixed up and ready to drive many miles." The boy said to Zoe and Xavier."What was wrong with it?" Xavier asked keenly, trying to read the boy and his intentions."The electronics were fried, among other things. Happens in modified older models." The boy said and started buttering a slice of fresh bread. Zoe got up to get the coat she was wearing last night from the guest room. Before anyone could say anything else, the old man placed a piece of paper in front of Xavier, who looked quizzically at the old m
>The sun had gone down when the car took a U-turn and headed to the coordinates on the unopened envelope Zoe was carrying in her bag. The envelope had the same seal as was carved on the wooden box from which the envelope had been taken. The mysterious intricate patterns meant nothing to Zoe or Xavier as neither had come across anything like that before. The coordinates led them to an elite nightclub that required either a membership or some very expensive tickets. They waited in the parking lot to come up with a plan.Zoe was confused. Why would her mother give the address of a nightclub to her little daughter? Xavier had gone to make a few calls and Zoe decided to do some research."We should go. Check in a hotel or something. We need more information. There is no way your mother wanted you to come to a nightclub in Kansas." Xavier said what had been going through Zoe's head already. She pulled out of the parking lot without responding to him. She was curious about who he
>"I'm going to shower," Zoe announced as soon as they entered their hotel room.Xavier smirked to himself and walked over to the window that looked over the neighborhood. It wasn't a bad view. With hands in his pocket, he stood deep in thought. He had a lot to think about. He knew abandoning his pack to go after this mate was a complicated idea but he didn't expect it to have such an effect on his pack. The calls he made earlier had worried him. But he didn't want to let Zoe know anything. She had been eager to send him away from the start and they were finally making some progress.Zoe stripped down and let the hot shower water wash her fatigue away. She stood there with her eyes closed, lost in thought. She had a lot to think about. She was far from home. Where was home anyway? She couldn't possibly return to her either of old packs to stay like before. A blurred image flashed in her mind. It was a woman in a blue flower dress, mid-length, flowing in wind. The woman had
>The next morning, Zoe woke up snuggling to something hard yet warm. It couldn't be a pillow, she thought. Xavier woke up before Zoe. It was the most beautiful morning he had in a while. It was also the most peaceful he had slept in a while. He admired her as she slept. Her head nuzzled in his chest, her arm wrapped on his torso under the blanket and their legs intertwined like they were where they belonged. Their animals had been in bliss for hours. Of course, their humans sleeping beside each other wasn't enough to quench their thirst for each other, but it was a start.Xavier felt Zoe stir. Her heartbeat picked up pace and she felt around his torso. He smiled to himself at her involuntary touch before he relaxed and closed his eyes, pretending to still be asleep.Zoe opened her eyes, groggily before she was slapped awake by the fact that she was hugged THE XAVIER SHAW in her sleep. How had she ended up in the bed with him? So many thoughts ran through her head. She loo
>The couple of mates had been driving for a good part of the night. They stopped for a few hours to rest their eyes in the car and were back on the road by dawn.By noon they were standing in front of a graffitied backdoor to a very inconspicuous-looking building in a very questionable neighborhood. "Are you sure this is the address?" Zoe asked."Yes, Zoe, for the thirtieth time today, I am sure." Xavier resisted his urge to roll his eyes at his adorable mistrusting mate."Then what are you waiting for? Knock." Zoe ordered and Xavier held back a grin. He loved the little things that were getting normalized between them. She wasn't pushing him away anymore. She hadn't joked with him yet but was getting comfortable around him. He could sense it."As my beautiful mate commands," Xavier smirked making Zoe roll her eyes.Xavier had barely knocked when the slot in the door slid open a pair of dark eyes stared back from within, "State your business." said a guy in a gruff voice.
>Xavier, Zoe, and sat quietly looking at each other waiting for the other to begin. So much had happened since the last time they had seen each other, and not all was good which made conversation hard. The girls could see how much the other had changed. Maisie started on a lighter note, "So, are you two together, together?""We are mates.""Not at all!"Xavier's confession was followed by Zoe's negation. Maisie's face expressed a mixture of confusion and amusement over their indecision, and surprise at Xavier's confession."Are you mates or not?" Maisie prodded amused."Yes, of course.""It's complicated."Again, Xavier's confession was contrasted with Zoe's answer."Complicated is better than not at all. I'd call that progress." Xavier smirked and sat back in his chair satisfied.Zoe bit her tongue, deciding not to add fodder to the canon pointed her way. Instead, she turned the conversation towards Maisie, "So, where have you been? How have you been? What are you doing h
>Maisie didn't know where to start or how much to tell, but it was about time someone knew what she had been through. She needed to share that, and who better to share it with than her best friend and the Alpha who had saved her once?Maisie had spent the night in horror and cold. Alone in a cabin in the woods waiting for the one person who had risked his life to save her. He had gone to get firewood and scout the area at dusk. He had strictly told her to stay indoors and not to come out no matter what she heard outside. She might not have gotten along with him but she trusted him to keep her safe. Which is why she listened to him and stayed put. She couldn't sleep. Wolves kept howling in the night and she wasn't sure if they were pure animals or werewolves. It was terrifying to be alone and not knowing what happened to her friend or her father.Maisie knew what risk she was taking by revealing her half-witch ancestry in the tribunal but she hadn't expected t
>Zoe and Xavier listened to the detailed account of events that Maisie had gone through with full attention. Zoe worried about her friend and pitied everything Maisie had to go through. Zoe blamed herself for pulling Maisie into her problems. After all, Maisie had to give up such a grave secret in front of so many people because Zoe's father's life was on the line. Xavier, on the other, was worried about his friend just as much as he was worried about Maisie. At least, Maisie had made it. Xavier had often checked with Jacob (his secretary) about Luca and nobody had heard anything since Maisie and Luca had escaped from the Werewolf Council Headquarters after Mr. Simmons' case."Maze. How did you get away from them?" Zoe asked softly. Maisie sighed and didn't meet the eyes of her friend. It was hard enough thinking about that. But talking about it all made it more real and unbearable."I'm not exactly sure what happened next. I swear, I just closed my eyes for a second. I
>Zoe was surprised to find Jacob standing in the middle of the cabin."I gave you a heart attack? You almost cost me my life." Jacob replied amused."How?" Zoe asked confused, "I'm not the one trespassing on a seemingly secret hideout.""Yeah, you just like to take casual walks in the woods while running from some of the most powerful and connected people in America." Jacob raised a brow, "Do you have any idea what would Alpha do to me if I told him that I lost you on the first day?""Don't overreact," Zoe laughed as she walked over to the sink and splashed some water on her face to freshen up."I'm not overreacting.""Uhuh,""Wow,""Wow, what?""Nothing,""Jacob?""It's just that. I'm surprised that you have no idea how important you are for Alpha."That answer stunned Zoe. She was expecting anything but for Jacob to say that. Despite being with Xavier on the road for a while now, she hadn't stopped to think how much she meant to him. He kept confessing his love and she a
>I had only been to the cabin with Xavier once. So, without the GPS that Jacob had set up, I'd be entirely lost.I tried to stay calm as the evening turned to the night. The cabin was a couple of hours away from the tunnel opening. I didn't know who built the cabin or of they knew about the tunnels. But, they had chosen the safest location in all of the pack, for a secluded, secret place. No wonder Xavier loved to go there to relax.I parked the car in the cabin garage that was also a storage room. Using the keys from the glove box of the car, I got inside the cabin and was instantly hit by the memories of amazing, passionate time that Xavier and I had spent there. At that time, the worst problem in my life was saving my Dad and not falling for the Alpha the thought of whole sent delcious shivers down my spine. The place was just as I remembered it. The paintings, the empty canvases, the easel and random splashes of color here and there, and the hammock where I had spent
>Lady Shaw knew her son, just as well as Xavier knew his father. Elder Shaw stood with his hands in his pockets like this was midday and not a strange middle-of-the-night, random visit that he had never done in his life before. He knew how he looked, he didn't care."Mother, step aside, let's have some late-night tea," He spoke with authority that he did not have over his mother who, according to him, was still the acting Alpha of the pack."It is late, son," Lady Shaw frowned, "Either say what you came to say or leave.""You do not look like you just got out of the bed to open the door, Mother," He smirked."Neither do you," Lady Shaw retorted."Well, I never said that I was in bed." "Neither did I,""In that case, you wouldn't mind a cup of tea with your only son, would you?""As a matter of fact, I would." Lady Shaw was losing patience, "I don't drink tea. Never have. And neither do you. So, skip the antics.""Fine, you got me," He sighed, not even pretending like he
>"Lady Shaw, the visitor is very persistent," Mrs. Hass spoke softly."Well, why didn't you ask the visitor's identity? Who do they think they are? To show up at the door of an old woman and demand an audience?" While Lady Shaw felt inconvenienced, she quickly got up. Because she knew that if somebody had the audacity to come to her door without an appointment and demand a meeting asap, it must mean that person either had everything at stake or nothing to lose. Either way, being the acting Alpha in the absence of her grandson meant that she had more responsibility for the people of her pack than she ever did before and she had been trying her best to keep things as smooth as she could."Call them in," Lady Shaw said to Mrs. Hass."I'm afraid they are already in, Ma'am." Mrs. Hass gave her best apologetic expression."Oh, Goddess. Now, that is going a step too far," Lady Shaw walked out of her bedroom where she had retired to rest for the night. Her feet stilled before her
>Xavier and Zoe rode the public transport to get as close as they could without getting spotted. They had memorized the route they were going to take to get to his cabin in the woods. It was of the places that did not have any underground tunnels leading to it.They had used the map of Blood Crescent's underground tunnels to get as far in the pack and as close to the cabin as they could. These were the same tunnels Luca's handler had used to smuggle him in the pack for his first mission. As soon as they resurfaced in the pack territory, Jacob was there with a car. Xavier had sent him an encrypted message through a secure line that they had been using to communicate over the past few months that Xavier was away.Xavier had updated Jacob about his brother and his long-awaited return to the pack while Jacob had kept him updated about Claire and the rest of the major happenings in the pack. Apparently, his father had kept his head down while Xavier was away but they knew that
>Zoe and Xavier spent the rest of the rest of the day discussing the contents of the flash drive with Luca. There was a lot of information there, but at the same time, a lot of critical information was still missing. For example, there were no proper coordinates of the bases, no real names were used, and there was no information about how long everything had been going on or who was funding it all.The only thing they concluded from the information was that the ones running these projects were sadistic bastards and worse were the people funding these who clearly had some dark ulterior motives. Zoe thought the worst was what each project's samples had to go through during the experiments. No one deserved to be put through such trauma-inducing horrors. But, for Xavier, the worst was not knowing who to trust anymore. He had no idea who was directly involved in these horrendous projects like his father and Claire. Luca briefed them about everything he had come to know so fa
>After telling them his story and revealing that he had been spying on the Military facility to the North, Luca brought out his laptop and the flash drive he was given."This thing has played a major role in me remembering myself as much as I have. I still have huge empty patches but at least I know who I am." Luca said and clicked on a folder that was locked. He added the password making Xavier ask, "How did you know that?" "Neil added a file in here among my files that had all the passwords and decryption codes required." Luca answered and turned the laptop to Xavier, "All yours, Alpha."Zoe leaned in as Xavier started scrolling through the many folders with names like Project Winter, Project Obsidian, and Project Twilight. His eyes caught a familiar name and he stilled."Do you know this one?" Zoe asked as Xavier clicked on the folder named, Project Blackwater.Xavier took a deep breath before answering, "Claire worked on this project during the five years that she was
>I was training through simulation one day when suddenly the feed got cut off.I took off the VR goggles and looked around. Everything was dark. The facility was well-protected and well-equipped. We couldn't just have a random blackout. Something was wrong.I walked into the lobby. My trainer was nowhere to be found. He never left me alone. I wandered the hallways confused having no idea what was happening. I tried a few doors through the hallway, but they were locked or had no one in them. The power returned in around fifteen minutes but no one returned. Getting bored and being a good soldier, I returned to my training. Only when I turned on the VR to resume my simulation, all I saw were pictures of Jacob, Mom, Xavier, and all my friends and fellows from Blood Crescent. I still have no idea who hijacked that place and how, but I am grateful to them. Because without them, there was no way I could've broken out of there. They didn't just override my VR to show me my real
>"I'll get some firewood," Luca told and left Xavier and Zoe to read the report.Xavier didn't turn the title page even after Luca had gone so, Zoe placed a hand on his arm, "You don't have to if you don't want to. What matters is that Luca is here and alive. We found him and he remembers you."Xavier sighed, "I know. But I have to. If my own father can stoop so low as to put the safety of his people in jeopardy for personal gains, there is no telling how far he is willing to go for them," He glanced at Zoe and Zoe could see the pain in his eyes from his father's betrayal. No matter how awful a parent is, the child always keeps hope for the better. Xavier had realized in that moment, that there was no hope for his father. He was just as awful as the people Xavier had spent his time fighting to protect his people from. He just never realized that the real threat was living in the Shaw mansion. He looked back at the file and flipped the page to begin reading from the top,~
