Marga entered the Fontanilla mansion without bothering to say her intention to the maid that greeted her. It's common knowledge that the reason why Marga comes to the mansion was always either Alexis or Alexander, but mostly the former.
She went straight to the library where Alexander stayed most of the time. She found him sitting on the study table, reading a book. She slammed her hands on the table. “Who is that girl you were with?”
Alexander flipped a page on his book, not bothering to look at Marga. “Pwede ba, Marga. Hindi lahat ng babaeng makakausap ko or ni Alexis kailangan kilala mo.”
“I have to. Baka mamaya pera lang ang habol n’un sa inyo,” she said, her voice raised an octave.
“She’s not like that.”
She crossed her arms. “How would you know? You saved her from falling down the stairs. Kailangan pa ba talaga na ihatid mo s’ya?”
Alexander closed his book and looked at Marga. His eyes were serious. “Stop this. Or I’ll hate you like Alexis does.”
He stood up and left the library. Marga slammed the table with her palms. Hate me all you want. I am doing this for you. I have to protect you both.
She saw an old box labelled Limstella Andrea Monteverde lying on the table. Xander might be looking at its content earlier. She opened the box. She took out a picture of twin boys and two girls smiling at the camera. She caressed the photo with such affection. You have to come back soon, Andie. I cannot protect them on my own.

It was four in the morning when Selena woke up. She felt it’s strange. Usually, she's still at the café by this time and working. But because Ms. Jean sent her home, she had no choice but to take a rest. She couldn't think of anything to do. It's too early to get ready for school. She also had her assignments done last night.
"Gising na kaya sila?" She asked her teddy, pertaining to her friends. She decided to try calling them. She first dialed Kringle's number. She made several attempts but no one's answering her.
She then tried to call Lucy. It took only a few rings to get her call disconnected. She attempted again but the same thing happened.
She keyed another set of digits, hoping that this time, she could talk to someone. She didn't wait for too long because it took only a few seconds before the line was connected.
"Hello?" the person on the other line spoke.
"Maine, nagising ba kita?"
"Hindi. Gising na ako kanina pa. Inaayos ko 'tong report natin e." Sharmaine answered. "Bakit nga pala napatawag ka? Break n'yo?"
She shook her head even though her friend could not see her doing so. "Hindi. Andito ako sa dorm. Pinauwi ako ni Ms. Jean. Sabi n'ya magpahinga na lang ako," she responded.
"Mabuti nga. Masyado mo pinahihirapan ang sarili mo. Kailangan mo rin naman magpahinga. Hindi ka naman robot para hindi mapagod. Nakikinig ka ba?" Her friend ranted at her.
"Oo, narinig ko." She chuckled. Her friend was acting like a mother hen, protective of her chicks. "Nga pala, may ikukwento ako."
"Mabuti pa, mamaya na lang sa school. Malamang gusto rin malamang 'yan ng dalawa. Isa pa, meron ka pang dapat sabihin sa kanila, tama?"
"Oo nga. Hay. Malamang andaming tanong ng dalawang 'yun mamaya."
"Panigurado 'yun. Kukulitin ka nila ng sobra, lalo na ni Kringle." Sharmaine agreed. "Sige na, mamaya na lang. Malapit ko na matapos 'tong report natin.
"Okay, mamaya na lang. Bye."
It seemed the time was moving too slow. Their call only lasted for a few minutes. She decided to read their lessons in-advance. She had a professor who would call a student and ask them to discuss almost the whole topic. She got bored and then made up her mind that she's going to school early. She remembered that players of the sports club would be excused today, so the SC officers' help would be needed.
The school was almost deserted when Selena arrived. Silence reigned in the places where students were commonly blabbering about anything under the sun. She headed to the SC office, wishing to find something to do. She found a big box, with a note attached to it, at the corner of the room. She read what was written on the paper.
"Please distribute these to the sports club. Give it to the clubs' coaches and ask them to sign on the 'receiving sheet'." - Mr. Aquino, SC adviser
She lifted the box. It was a bit heavy, but she didn't have a hard time carrying it. She got her strength back, good thing she had an eight-hour sleep. When she turned to her back, she saw an unexpected person.
"Selena," he greeted her, smiling.
"Alexis," she shyly said. "Ano'ng ginagawa mo dito?" She couldn't help but ask since he comes to the SC office once in a blue moon.
"Bakit, officer din naman ako, 'di ba?" He asked, chuckling.
She shook her head. "H-hindi naman gan'un ibig ko sabihin. Nagulat lang ako na nandito ka." She mentally slapped herself for stuttering and hoped he didn't notice it.
"Pinapakuha lang sa akin ni Coach 'yung mga jersey namin. Ako inutusan nya kasi alam n'ya na SC ako," he explained. His eyes wandered around the room, evidently looking for something. "Now, where is that box?"
Selena suddenly remembered the box she was carrying. "Ito ba'ng hinahanap mo?" She asked and showed Alexis its contents.
"Yup. That's the one," he said, then took the box from her and placed it on the table. He took his and his teammates' jerseys inside and signed on the received sheet for his coach as instructed. "Bakit dala-dala mo ‘to?" He asked her.
"Nabasa ko 'yung note sa box, pinapabigay 'to sa mga coach ng sports club. Wala naman akong ginagawa kaya naisip ko na ako na lang magdadala nito d'un," she said, looking down again and rubbing her hands.
"You shouldn't be the one doing this. Babae ka kaya hindi ka dapat nagbubuhat ng mabigat." He then lifted the box. Selena attempted to snatch away from him the box as she felt shy about him helping her out, but he insisted that he’ll carry it. Axis offered to accompany her in distributing the jerseys and she agreed.
"Kamusta na nga pala pakiramdam mo?" Axis asked as they were walking to the sports complex.
"A-ayos naman na ako." Then she looked down. She felt the heat on her face. She knew she was blushing too much.
"Ayos ka lang? Namumula ka."
She lifted her head. "Ha?"
The boy's next gesture surprised her. Alexis placed his one hand on her forehead. "Hindi ka naman mainit."
She took a step back and said, "Siguro dahil sa araw." And she looked down again, feeling more flushed than earlier.
No one was talking after that. They continued distributing the jerseys to different clubs; tennis, volleyball, badminton, and many others. They were nearing the soccer field when Selena remembered something she should have done earlier.
"A-ano..." Selena started. She couldn't finish her sentence. She was too nervous to say anything.
"What is it?" Alexis asked.
She raised her head a little. "Ah... G-gusto ko lang mag-sorry."
He raised his brow. "For what?"
"'Y-yung sa kahapon. Sa'yo ako nag-thank you sa pagdala sa'kin sa infirmary." And turned her face away.
"Ah. 'Yun ba? Wala 'yun. Madalas namang gano'n ‘yung nangyayari. Hindi kasi sinasabi ni Xander na s'ya ang gumagawa ng mga bagay-bagay. Kaya I get to claim all the glory, kahit na hindi dapat," he explained.
Selena got curious so she asked Axis. "Gan'un ba talaga s'ya?"
"Uhh… yes… and no," Axis answered.
Selena wondered what he meant by that.
"He's been kind ever since we were kids. He used to smile more often then. Probably much more than I do." He had a faraway look in his eyes.
Selena wanted to ask more but Alexis’ teammate called him. "Sorry, Selena, but I gotta go. Mag-start na daw kami mag-practice."
"Hindi. Okay lang ako. Kaya ko na 'to," she said and took the box from him.
"Are you sure?"
Selena nodded. "Konti na lang naman 'to, kaya matatapos ko na 'to mag-isa," she assured him with a smile.
He smiled at her as well. "I'm really sorry for leaving you. Do take care, okay?" He waved at her then he left.
Selena couldn't move for a moment. She was so happy with what she heard. Concerned s’ya sa’kin!. She was giggling at her thoughts. Though she was curious of what Alexis was close to saying about his brother, she didn't mind it for now. What matters to her is that her relationship with her crush is somehow growing.
END OF CHAPTER
"How are you going to play with that kind of injury, ha, Fontanilla?" Mr. Herrera, the basketball team's coach, asked, his brows creased. "I'm sorry, coach," was Xander’s only answer. "Sorry? How could you hide such thing? Hindi ko pa malalaman na may injury ka kung hindi ko nakita ang reaksyon mo nung mabangga ni Simon 'yang kamay mo. Paano na lang kung lumala 'yan? Ano na lang ang mangyayari sa team?" His coach said continually, his tone hadn't changed. Xander didn't say a word. He just let his coach talk, words were just passing by his ears. And besides, he didn't want to explain anything. "Ang mabuti pa," Mr. Herrera continued, not even noticing that he was already talking to air, "humingi ka kay Ms. Lei ng medical certificate, para maipaalam natin sa admin
Selena stared at him. Totoo ba 'tong naririnig ko? Inaaya n'ya akong lumabas? 'Di ba ako nananaginip? She asked herself. "Wala. Walang gagawin 'yan. Libre 'yan pagkatapos ng klase natin, 'di ba?" Kringle butted in. She elbowed her friend beside her, not sure if it's Lucy or Sharmaine. Sharmaine, being the one who was elbowed, was forced to say something too. "Tama. Tapos naman na lahat ng gagawin namin kaya pwede na s'ya." Lucy didn't say a thing but she nodded, agreeing to what the two had just said. Axis just smiled at them and waited for Selena to answer. "Selena?" He called her again. "Hoy, Selena. Kinakausap ka n
Selena left the cafe as soon as her shift ended. Usually, she would take overtime for extra pay, but not that day. She needed to see Xander and talk to him immediately. They would be seeing each other at the students' committee meeting later, for sure, but she couldn't wait. She had to tell him as soon as possible that next Friday was set for her date with Axis. She looked for him all over the campus. She went to the basketball court, the students' committee room, 3A's classroom, and even at the infirmary but there was no sign of him. There is one last place she hasn’t checked, the rooftop. She was about to go upstairs when someone suddenly called her. "Selena? Anong ginagawa mo d'yan?" She turned her head and found Sharmaine. "Ikaw pala. Kasi meron lang sana akong kakausaping tao." She answered.
Kringle moved her chair closer to the table and rested her chin on her palms, as if a child listening to her granny's story. This time, Lucy ignored her. She's as interested in what Selena will tell as her friend was. Selena reminded her friends about the payment Alexander was asking in exchange for saving her the other day. She told them everything they had talked about last night. "Hindi ka rin naman swerte 'no, bestie. Akalain mo bang yayain ka ng dalawang gwapong nilalang makipag-date sa kanila. At sa parehong araw pa," Kringle reacted. “Hindi ‘yun date,” she corrected. "At 'yun nga ang problema, eh. Sabay na araw pa. Kanino ngayon ako sasama?" Selena asked, pouting. "E'di sa unang nagyaya," Kringle replied, grinning and raising her brows up and down.
Selena and her friends were on their way to their classroom. They were chit-chatting happily when someone caught their attention."Psst. Selena. Tignan mo 'yun, oh," Kringle said as she pointed to the boy standing by the wall. "Si Prince Charming ba 'yun o si Knight-in-shining-armor?" She asked.Selena looked towards the direction Kringle was pointing to, identifying in her head who it was.Sharmaine tilted her head to the side. "Anong 'prince' at 'knight' pinagsasasabi mo d'yan?" She asked."Ah. Wala lang naman. Binigyan ko lang ng nicknames ang mga lalaki sa buhay ni Selena," Kringle answered, grinning.Lucy raised her brows at Kringle. "Eh, sino nga si 'prince' at sino si 'knight'?"
Selena swiftly gathered her things when their classes ended. She wanted to return to her dormitory immediately. "Maine, pwede bang ikaw muna pumunta sa SC meeting?" She asked as she turned to her friend. Sharmaine shook her head. "Tatapusin ko pa 'yung report natin." Kringle scratched her head. "Eh? 'Di ba sabi mo tapos mo na 'yun?" "Written report pa lang 'yung natatapos ko. Gagawa pa ako nung powerpoint," Sharmaine answered, fixing her glasses into place. Selena sighed. She had no other choice but to attend the meeting herself. "Bakit parang ayaw mo yatang pumunta sa meeting? May problema ba?" Lucy asked, crossing her arms. Selena scratched
The school bell rang again, ending today's club activities. Lucy gathered her things and walked to their homeroom. She and Kringle agreed to wait for Selena and go home together. As Lucy walked back to the classroom, she came across a familiar someone. She decided to ignore her but the latter wanted the opposite. "Lucille Rivera," the girl called her as they met along the hallway. "Can we talk?" She asked. Lucy stopped from walking and faced her. She couldn’t believe that this girl was really talking to her. Curious about what this girl wanted, she then decided to listen to her. "Marga Castillejo," Lucy said the girl's name with some hint of fake enthusiasm in her voice. "Ano naman kayang masamang hangin ang nagtulak sa'yo para kausapin ako?"
Wynnford is emitting a serious vibe. Preliminary examinations are coming soon, with long quizzes before that, and everyone's doing their best to pass the upcoming tests. Selena decided to be at school earlier, since Ms. Jean made her have a beauty rest for her date, though the date is still days away. Even thinking of this makes her blush. She pushed away the thought out of her head and focused on reviewing for tests. But before anything else, she had to drop by the SC office to submit updates of their preparations for the mini fest. On her way to the SC room, she bumped into someone which made her things fall on the floor. "Sorry!" Selena and the boy he bumped into said in unison. He immediately helped gather her things. "Sorry ulit," he apologized again as they fini
After about a one-hour drive, Alexis pulled over a hillside. He got out of the car and opened the door for Selena. They were both surprised at the setup on the place. There was a white picnic cloth laid on the grass. On the mini table were sparkling wine, wine glasses, some cold cuts, and mini sandwiches. There were also mini pillows lying on the mat. Above those was a white lace canopy with fairy lights. And they were illuminated by a million stars in the sky. She glanced at him. “Hinanda mo lahat nang ‘to?” She was smiling from ear to ear. He shook his head. “I asked our butler na tulungan ako mag-set up. But he might have overdone it a little,” he answered, scratching his cheek. She looked back at the setup. She walked towards it and made hers
“A friend,” he uttered. Selena saw the look on his face. He was smiling but his eyes were telling the opposite. That ‘Andeng’ must have been someone special to Alexis. She was itching to know more of this girl which made Alexis look sad. But she couldn’t bring herself to ask him. An awkward silence came between them. She was so glad when Aling Lita came out, bringing their food. “Ito na!” Aling Lita exclaimed. She was carrying a tray containing two bowls of hot sinigang na baboy. She removed the bowls from the tray and placed each in front of her and Alexis. Her eyes glittered, her mouth started to water, and her stomach grumbled. The food in front of her looked very appetizing. “Sige, mga anak. Kain na kayo,” Aling Lita
Alexis heaved a deep sigh. He was thankful he got past Marga's ambush. He knew she would bombard her with a lot of questions. He hated her being clingy to him, but he couldn’t just push her away as much as he wanted to for several reasons. He dismissed all his thoughts about Marga. He had his dinner date with Selena to mind. He walked to Room 3B and peeked inside. There he saw a group of girls hovering over someone. In his view, they were torturing her. "Ayan! Mukha ka nang prinsesa. Pwede ka nang itabi kay prince charming," Kringle exclaimed. Selena looked at her. "Sigurado ka bang hindi ako mukhang clown?" She asked, slightly creasing her brows. “Do you think pagmumukhain ka naming katawa-tawa?” Lucy chided, crossing her arms.
“All's set na, Kuya Janus? ... The best ka talaga! Thanks! ... Oo, Kuya. Ako na ang bahala. Salamat ulit!” Alexis' smile was still on his face even after he ended the call, which got his friends' attention and made him the teasing subject. They've been asking him the same question for a week and still, they got no answer from him. “Lapad ng ngiti, p're ah. Tuloy na ang date mamaya?” Gino elbowed him. Alexis chuckled and shook his head. "Hindi nga kasi ‘yun date." Tristan slung his arm around Axis' shoulder. "P're, aminin mo na kasi. Di naman namin tataluhin ‘yang chicks mo, 'di ba mga tol?" And their other friends agreed. Alexis removed Tristan's arm on his shoulder. "Tigilan nyo na ako. Hindi ‘yun date, okay? Kaibigan ko lang ‘yun." He sat on
It's ten in the evening and Selena's at her dormitory. Jean made her go home again, true to her word that she’ll push her out once she goes to work. While they were talking, she could feel Annie's stabbing glares. Clearly, her senior wasn't happy with the incentives she's getting. She sighed and plopped herself on her bed, thinking of something to do. She's not used to sitting and doing nothing. She picked up her cellphone on the desk and dialed her mom's number. It took a few rings for the line to get connected. "Nak. Oh, bakit ka napatawag? May problema ba?" Sayang sa load," her mo
Club activities were shortened in preparation for the upcoming quizzes by the end of the week. The students were flooding the library and nearby cafés. It was a good thing that Selena had reserved a table at Mocafé for them. She asked Jean permission for them to have their study session there, to which her manager approved. Selena served them iced coffee and cakes. “Help yourselves, guys. It’s ‘on the house’,” she said, then sat on the seat beside Kringle. Each of them took their drinks. “Wow. Makapagsabi ng ‘on the house’. Ikaw may-ari nito?” Kringle commented. Lucy coughed and almost spat her drink.
Lucy opened her textbook as she sat on her desk. After leaving the class earlier without telling her friends why, she went home and talked to her father. She had to consult him about what's bothering her or else, she won’t be able to do what she should. Her phone vibrated. She looked at the phone screen and rolled her eyes. She has no idea why Marga’s bothering her this time of the night. She answered her phone and put it on loudspeaker. Marga didn’t waste any second and said, “You have three days to stop Selena from going out with Alexis and Alexander, or else she’ll have a miserable college life.” She snorted. “I don’t think you can actually do that, Marga. You’re all words. You cannot stop her from being close to the twins. Besides, ‘yung dalawa mismo ang gustong mapalapit kay Selena.”
Alexander was looking outside, sitting on his chair, not minding anybody as usual. He's ignoring everyone but his girl classmates were talking so loud that he caught what they were talking about. “...transferee sa 3B.” Hearing the class section, he decided to tune in to their conversation. “Nakakaloka talaga 'tong school natin. Simula na ng semester, tumatanggap pa ng bagong 'studyante.” “Kaya nga eh. Baka naman kasi VIP 'yun kaya pinayagang late mag-enroll.” "Anak siguro ng isang malaking kumpanya." "Baka naman anak ng pulitiko?" The girls giggled at their loud thoughts. Alexander rolled his eyes. The girls were onl
