Chapter 4

Xavier tightened his grip on the phone, his conflicted gaze flickering toward me before he stepped into the ward.

I slowly got up and followed him inside. Unable to stop myself, I blurted out, "I told you I wasn't lying. I really do only have one kidney."

"How is that even possible?" Tobias was the first to speak. "One kidney? Mom's always been healthy. She's never been hospitalized. When would she have had the time to get a kidney removed?

"She's constantly busy, waking up early to make breakfast, shuttling me to school, preparing lunch and dinner, and managing all household chores. And she was still working before she retired. How could she ever have had time for something like that?"

His words hit me like a punch to the chest.

So, they noticed everything I did. They just didn't care. It was all normal to them—something I was expected to do.

My heart ached as I looked at Xavier, who frowned.
