The skyline was dotted with towering buildings, many constructed within the previous ten years or less. The city was seeing unprecedented growth in employment, which has received a great deal of attention. Several distinct cultures have left their imprints on education and the personality of the city as a whole. What was once a city of little variety has evolved into a fusion of everything.

The sense of belonging to a heterogeneous society has made its imprint. One may choose from hundreds of clubs, theme restaurants, and diners. Those looking for something different could go sightseeing, touring the city, doing aerobics, or visiting one of the numerous other recreational places.

“My parents can be talkative sometimes,” he suddenly said while he turned left in the next corner.

“Your parents? Wait, are you saying that we are going to dine with them?”

“Yes. We are heading towards one of your restaurants,” he said.

I slapped his arm to question his motive, but he just ignored it. Then he said, “Look, we are getting married soon, so it’s only right to introduce you to them.”

The man was right. Getting to know his parents were inevitable, and what’s worse, I felt so uncomfortable while we discussed our upcoming wedding. It was about to happen in a few weeks, and day after day, I couldn’t do anything to change their mind. The thought of forfeiting my life has occurred to me, but it would be not warm-hearted to the life that’s sprouting inside my womb. I couldn’t do that to my baby, no, never!

When we arrived at our destination, I admired the uniqueness of the place. From the exterior, it seemed to be a lovely, simple, and rustic structure. Although it’s impossible to see through the big, curtained windows, the vibrant voices from the inside could be heard at the parking lot. As we went through the thick wooden door of the restaurant, we were greeted with the scent of booze and the sound of happy music. I glared at Robert for bringing me into a pub with men and liquors. The bartender was preoccupied with other clients, but he managed to greet us with a wave nevertheless.

On the inside, it’s just as fascinating as it is on the exterior. Rounded, wooden beams supported the top-level and the torches that were linked to it. Various pieces of memorabilia cluttered the walls. However, it was unclear whether they had been gathered or have been given as gifts.

The place itself was jam-packed with people. Workers seemed to be the majority of the customers here, which contributed to some exciting nights. It appeared that many long tables were filled by what appeared to be separate groups of people who had become friends over excellent food and discussion. Even the smaller tables were taken by individuals who were presumably beginning to feel the effects of too much alcohol, yet no one appeared to notice or object. Even the majority of the bar chairs were taken. However, no one seemed to worry if there were a few more people. Although, judging by the warmth and enthusiasm that emanates from the bar, it was most likely the environment that has made this restaurant renowned throughout time.

“My parents are probably upstairs,” he said and held my hand as we made our way to the stair leading to the second floor of the place.

I tried to get away from his firm hold, but my effort was futile. I didn’t have to feel nervous about meeting his parents since there was a slim chance they would humiliate me. After all, they also agreed to our arranged marriage. “You don’t have to hold me now,” I protested when he kept on holding unto me.

“Your hands are warm,” he said, and I rolled my eyes in response.

Luckily, the assorted smell from the clients made me forget about Robert’s horrible smell, and when he pushed the door open, I could close my eyes and let it happen. His parents looked more awful than Robert, and I blinked several times to ensure I didn’t imagine things.

“Say hi to my mom,” Robert said.

“H-hello, Mr & Mrs. Dixon,” I formally greeted them, and they seemed displeased about it. Robert’s mother didn’t say a single word after that, and I could say it was the most boring dinner I have ever attended with. It was more tedious than eating alone!

After dinner, Robert surprised me when he said he couldn’t take me home because he missed his parents, and instead, he called a cab to take me home. While in the cab, I believed he did it on purpose to annoy me or to insult me. What a shame because he has to matter to me before he can hurt me. It’s basic!

In the morning, I was surprised to see my father at home. Aunt Jenny has also returned from her vacation, and aside from them, there were other people in the house. I didn’t recognize some of them.

“Who are they?” I asked my father when I joined him for breakfast.

“Make-up artists,” he replied and paused to drink his coffee. “Eat your breakfast now so we can start the preparation,” he added.

“Preparation for what?”

“Your wedding,” he announced, and my mouth gaped open at his announcement.

I was taken aback by the property where he took me after the wedding. From the exterior, this property seemed to be luxurious. Tall, circular windows allowed plenty of natural light to enter the residence, and they have been strategically placed throughout the structure in a reasonably symmetrical design. The property was furnished with a standard kitchen and three bathrooms, a large living room, two bedrooms, a small dining area, a library, and an oversized garage with plenty of parking spaces. The charge leveled against me by my father was the most absurd thing I had ever heard in my life! His demeanor revealed a great deal about him, and I couldn't believe he was my father and shook my head in amazement. ”Scammed? He is not a con artist!” When I stood up for my boyfriend against his charges, he burst out laughing in response. The fact that he doubted my ability to assess a person's character was insulting to me! “So, who exactly is he? An opportunistic gold-digger?” He shouted. Despite my best efforts, he continued to degrade the man I loved the most, and every time he opened his blasted mouth, I wanted to slap him in the face to silence him, but I couldn't be violent towards my father. “I recently found out that you took a sizable sum of money out of your savings,” he added. “Dad, you're harsh and judgmental, to say the least! Just because someone is not well-off does not imply that he is an opportunist!!” Upon hearing my explanation, he grinned. “Wait till your ban

While driving, I took several deep breaths and let out a huge sigh as I managed to flee from my guards. After he arranged my marriage to a stranger, he assigned several people to watch over me. I was a prisoner in my own home, and I didn’t want to keep it that way…forever! So I decided to leave for good. I felt terrible for misleading Aunt Jenny and some of the guards, but I had no choice. I wanted the freedom to travel and experience the outside world, which had been out of reach for me for a period of time. Being aware that it was a dangerous road, I was driving slowly while traveling down the winding path. I was in a hurry and bothered simultaneously, so witnessing a truck losing its control terrified me. As the truck made contact with the asphalt, I let out a frightened cry and began to tremble violently. After seeing the twisted wreckage of the truck, my hands began to shake with fear, and it took me a while to realize that someone was in dire need of help and that I was the o

Since the incident, I have minimized my activities outside my residence. I enjoyed being holed up in my bedroom because I felt safe inside it. The boyfriend who duped me remained unknown, and with every passing day, I regret meeting that person. I regret everything that I did for him. I was so naïve to believe his sweet words! The boyfriends that I used to have were merely tools to help me prove that it’s possible to marry for love. I’ve always believed in fairytales and happy endings, but all of my relationships were a failure. Sometimes it’s me, but of the time, it’s because of my father, because he loved to interfere in my personal affairs! My father had no idea about the real reason why I always wanted to marry for love. He had no idea about what I kept doing inside my room whenever I feel like doing it! He had no idea how naughty his daughter could be, and no man could handle my addiction for so long…unless he truly loves me! For years, I have struggled to restrain my urges to

The man was crazy to propose such a thing to me! The nerve! For a second, I couldn’t speak because of shock. No, it wasn’t just a normal shock. I was enraged at his dirty proposal! “How dare you!” I shouted at the bastard. “Take it or leave it, Miss Selena, but I won’t settle for less,” he continued. “One million dollars isn’t less, you arrogant bastard!” “For some people, it’s huge; however, I don’t need your money, Madam. So, if you will spend a night with me, I will gladly leave in the morning. Decide now before it’s too late,” he stated. I narrowed my eyes at the man who dared to flip the situation. I was the one to make the first offer, but he managed to call the shots with just one sentence that disturbed my senses! “You are crazy if you believe that I’m going to have sex with you. For your information, you are not my type,” I informed him, but he just chuckled at my response! “Are you sure? Look at me, Miss.” “What do you think you’re doing, Lee?” I shouted at the man who

The bodyguard was obstinate, so last night, I decided to change my style of dealing with him. Something was intriguing about the man. He was overbearing, confident, and so sure about himself. He acted superior to me, and I hated it very much! Since I had a scheduled meeting with my staff, I got up earlier than usual. At a quarter to six, I was already prepared and ready to start my day. Before leaving my room, I envisioned myself having a good day at my workplace, but someone’s face ruined my mood when I got out of my bedroom. “Good morning, Madame,” he greeted with a wide grin on his face. In response, I arched my brows at him, but the arrogant man just smiled at me. As I proceeded down the hallway, I stared down at the man who waited outside my bedroom and dismissed him entirely as I entered the elevator. “What are you doing, Lee?” I asked him why he was following me when I clarified to him last night that I didn’t need a bodyguard. In reply, he said in a monotone, “I have to be

Instead of feeling remorseful, the arrogant man just grinned at me as if nothing happened. Was he crazy?“We just made a deal; shouldn't we seal it with a kiss?” He jested.“Do you have a death wish?” I scolded him immediately.“Alright, a handshake will do,” he compromised, and then he extended his hand for a handshake.Accepting it was the easiest part, but the moment our palms connected, I was jolted to the core and felt the electrical energy run through my body. When I was able to speak on the subject, Lee quietly moved his plate and took a faraway seat from me, where he went on to eat as if nothing had happened. My body's reaction to his proximity was very

Robert remained quiet and puckered his lips in response, and I frowned at him! Was he under the impression that he could intimidate me with a severe look on his face? He has to rethink his position! I stepped away as he walked towards me as if he was going to kiss me! As soon as he got close enough to kiss me, I ran upstairs like a coward and didn’t look back. An hour later, I went downstairs to talk to my father, who had just gotten home. It was up to me to persuade him that my marriage to Robert would be a complete catastrophe. The bodyguard stayed in the shadows but kept a close eye on me at all times. “Daddy, can we talk?” “Can you tell me what it is this time?” He inquired in a severe tone that made my palms shiver in terror every time he spoke. “I don’t get along with Robert, Daddy.” “You’re not required to do so. Just get married to him and let him save you from total humiliation! Your future is safe in Robert’s capable hands!” He said it in a matter-of-fact tone, which I

When Robert stared at me for a second, I thought he would rebut my accusation, but he remained staring at me, and it was uncomfortable. When he remained silent and just stared, I arched my brows at him and asked, “Are you not going to say anything?” “You used to like me when we were younger,” he said, implying that I had a crush on him in the past. I thought I would die of annoyance when he mentioned the ‘crush thing’ from the past. “It’s all in the past, Robert. While it is true that you are still good-looking, I don’t think I can survive living with you. You smelled like a dead person!” “Having body odour is normal, isn’t it?” “Oh, my God! Here we go again,” I let out a sigh of exasperation. When he tried to come closer to me, I yelled and turned around. I hurried towards the door, my hand covering my lips with the other hand. He had feet that smelled like a dead animal, and I felt sick to my stomach! Could he get any more repulsive? “Selena, wait!” “Stay where you are, please

Robert was rendered speechless, but it didn't take him long to change his expression. In a split second, he stared daggers at me, and the way he looked at my neck, and I was worried he would strangle me to death. For a moment, I felt relieved that my father hired a new bodyguard who was probably lurking near us to save me anytime. "Are you looking for the bodyguard? I'm sorry to disappoint you, Selena, but he's not here now and wouldn't be able to save you. Do you understand what I am trying to tell you?" "Yes!" I replied, and without any warning, I ran towards the safety of my room. When I heard him call my name again, my hands shook in fear. When I looked behind my shoulders, I saw him move a little, and as he got closer to me, I became so nervous and almost peed on my clothes. I pointed my finger at him and warned him incessantly not to come closer, but he merely grinned as if there was something funny going on. "Stop where you are right now!" I shouted at him. When Robert called my name again, I was worried he would do something terrible to me, so I ran away, and I heard him laugh from a distance. What's his deal? I tried to call Layla to ask her some questions about Robert, but her phone was turned off. With a heavy heart, I went outside for fresh air. From the balcony, I strolled towards our manicured garden and headed towards the swing. I missed spending time in the swing with Lee or my aunt. Speaking of which, I recalled I had something to discuss with Aunt Jenny, so I immediately dialed her phone number. However, it was out of the coverage area. I tried again, but I got the same result. Anyway, I gave up on calling her and shifted my focus to the surroundings. While staring at the budding flower close to me, I couldn't stop thinking about Lee. Every day, I have been checking for an article that would mention the union of Katherine Hamilton and Liam Salcedo, but I couldn't find any write-ups.For the nth time, I sighed in frustration. I

When he mentioned my pregnancy, I narrowed my eyes at him and wondered how the Hell he knew about my condition. For several days, I tried to ignore the issue. As soon as I noticed the delay in my monthly period, I purchased a pregnancy kit that could help me confirm my suspicion. When it was time to use it, I waited patiently, and when it turned out to be positive, I nearly collapsed inside the bathroom. It was such a shocking turn of events, but I couldn't blame anyone for my negligence. I wasn't taking birth control pills when I allowed him to sleep with me. It was reckless, but I was not thinking correctly during those times and let my emotions take over my mind. I let my emotions control me, so I had to bear the consequences of my actions. "I am going to raise my child alone," I declared in front of my father. "Says who? I won't let you ruin our reputation," he stated in a monotone which was even scarier. "Daddy! What about my life? There was no announcement about Katherine Hamilton’s engagement with Liam Salcedo on news outlets and television, but I knew they were planning their wedding. Some of our common friends mentioned it, and except for Layla, they were all happy about the upcoming union of Katherine Hamilton and Liam Salcedo. Since I was not in the mood to go back to work, I asked my father to lend one of his managers to manage mine for the time being. It was a risky move, especially when my sea freight business had been doing well in the previous months, and we were headed to expansion. I tried so hard to convince myself and go to work, but my mind and heart wouldn’t cooperate! I knew I was wallowing in self-pity and self-destruction, but I couldn’t stop myself from being so melodramatic. I was aware that forgetting him and moving on were the only options to survive the recent heartbreak, but everything about Liam Salcedo haunted me! At night, I would see him in my dreams! During the daytime, I was a
