He slammed his drink on the table. "The only woman I'm interested in is whoever my master chooses for me! Whether it be his sister, aunt, or even his grandmother! But it has to be a relative."Everyone around the table laughed, annoying him even more than he was annoyed before."Kenny, don't be silly. How could you, at 21, marry an old woman?" His mother snickered, waving him off. In the room's bright lighting her emerald earrings sparkled. "All of Master Harmony's remaining relatives are well above your age. Pick one of the beautiful women we've chosen for you. They all have suitable backgrounds and immaculate manners. Just give them a chance, you won't be disappointed."Kenny pinched his nose. Why did he even bother with these people when he knew they'd just be saying the same thing over and over again?"It would be easier to find you someone if you just told us what type of girl you like," Mr. Greenland added in. His current wife clung to his arm, glaring at Kenny's birth mother from across the table. "But you have been so uncooperative that it's become hard."He flung his arms into the air. "That's the point, Dad. I don't have a type." The young man leaned back with a sigh, his hand covering his face. "I want to be left alone. I don't want to date. Heck, I don't even care about who I marry as long as they're someone I can agree with.""Then why--""Because, everyone is fake!" He cut off his father. As Mr. Greenland shook his head, Kenny continued. "They're always so sickeningly nice! Like, those girls are always sooo concerned about me and so touchy, touchy! Every minute they latch on to me like flies! 'Oh, you're so handsome, Ken!' 'You would make a wonderful husband~' 'Did you know that my mother plans to pass down her company to me? I'm going to be a CEO!' And blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!" He rolled his eyes. "The one Mom kept telling me is such an angel offered to take me up to her bedroom and make her a woman."His Mom, Georgina, froze. "Wait, which one?"Kenny gestured with his finger, as if telling her to come closer. Other people started to mutter, stirring up unnecessary noise in what used to be a joyous environment.Hunter Greenland couldn't take it anymore. He picked up his spoon and knocked on his glass several times. Effectively, everyone calmed down."Kenny Greenland, have some respect! Talking about such things, do you not your master right in front of you?"The guest focused on Master Harmony, awaiting his reaction. He was an old man whom sat at the end of the table, with his best student, Sher, to his right and an empty seat to his left, to represent the family that he had lost. His crew cut was littered with salt and pepper hair. Sharp black eyes scanned the room before stopping at the cold, golden whiskey in his glass. A large wrinkled hand reached out and grasped it, bringing it to his lips."It's fine," Master Harmony said after a sip. "Don't mind me. But you stated you would marry someone from my lineage, correct, Young Ken?"Kenny gulped but regained his composure. It was too late to go back now. "Your direct lineage, yes. I figure anyone that you've brought up would be more worthy of being my wife. However..." He tapped on his ear, a cheeky smile spread across his face. "As my dear, darling mother has said, it wouldn't be great for it to be someone years ahead of me. Instead, I would only marry your grandchild."Some folks gasped and Hunter rolled his eyes, his wife had both her hands covering his mouth. Georgina absorbed her son with interest. "Darling, don't be silly. You know that he has no children, much less grandchildren.""Is that a promise?" Master Harmony responded calmly.Kenny smirked. "You have my word."He watched as his master, who was like an uncle to him, chuckled. "Well, let's see how much your word is worth. Sher!"Sher sat up immediately, hands folded on her silk maroon dress. "Yes, Master?""Go into my office and write up a contract. I have a feeling you and I both know what should be on it."Sher bowed her head before leaving the room.As she departed, Master's guests chatted and enjoyed each bit of entertainment performed at the front of the large room. The hula dancers took their exit with a round of applause following behind them. Then, the lights turned off.It became quiet for a while before their surroundings lit up in a dim, purple hue.In walked several men in white shorts and no shoes on their feet. There was a pair of sticks in one of their hands, a mysterious bottle filled with liquid in the other. After seven men settled in, another man carrying a drum strode inside, choosing to sit in a corner nearby. At the ringing of the first beat, the entertainers began their routine. The crowd hollered and cheered as fire blew into the air, less than half the distance away from the roof. Georgina clapped heartily, then tugged on Kenny's black dress shirt. "Be careful while you're with your father," she warned. "That woman is from a disgraced family that moved to the slumps, what, seven, eight years ago? Anyway, watch her."Her son nodded. His eyes drifted to his stepmother clapping in excitement. Caroline Greenland was how Hunter Greenland Introduced her half a year ago. She seemed to talk nonstop to her husband, who only nodded. Kenny took a drink from his brandy, watching her every move. Georgina scoffed. It seemed like she wanted to say something else but stopped as both of them became distracted by Sher re-entering the room through a separate door.Sher walked up to Master Harmony and handed him the contract. He read through it pretty quickly for a man going up in age.He took the fountain pen she offered and signed all three papers. At his command, Sher went to Kenny's side. Kenny retrieved the items and thanked her.The liquor must have finally taken hold. His surroundings became blurry. He had to blink a few times to see in front of him. When he could, he got right down to reading the terms.1. Party A, Kenny Greenland, will legally marry Party B's, Sylvester Harmony's, biological female grandchild until the day both parties agree to a divorce.2. The bride Party B provides must be polite, intelligent, brave, and quiet according to Party A's requirements (this can be changed at any time).3. The wedding must take place, at most, one month after the signing of this contract.4. Both parties are aware that if either party does not comply with the terms of the contract, or to conspire against the contract in any way, that party must pay a compensation of 1.6 billion dollars or/and control of the businesses under their name.5. Both parties agree that they have read and understood the above terms.Party AFull name: _________________Signature: _________________Date: _______________Party BFull name: Sylvester HarmonySignature: S. HarmonyDate: January 8, 2021Kenny heard the old man clear his throat. "Are the terms agreeable to you, young man?"He thought for a minute. His intuition was telling him to be aware, that once he signed it he would be caught in the old man's trap. However he thought through it clearly and there was no way his master could pull one over him. After years of studying under that man's wing, and the bit of research he did before tonight, he knew there was next to impossible for that man to have some long lost grandchild no one knew about. Whatever Master Harmony and his parents had planned, it didn't matter. He would never fall for it. Plus, distracting his parents with this would give him more time to convince them that he didn't need to settle down in order to know what it means to be a good employer. A family with three kids and a picket fence? He hated kids! And picket fences! What kind of life were they trying to subject him to?Kenny flicked his wrist and signed his name, making sure extra malice showed in every stroke. He handed the papers to Sher who promised to keep them safe until he was ready to depart. He smiled at her and she smiled back. The night went on as planned. Hunter made jokes to amuse his friends. He allowed Kenny to interrupt their conversation every once in a while to make a point. Finally, right on 11:00 PM, Kenny cheered as his master's servants rolled out the trolley carrying the three layer birthday cake. The guest pushed back their chairs and stood up, some with glasses in hand."Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! Happy 62th birthday Sylvester Harmony! Happy birthday to you."With a smile, Sylvester blow out the candles. "Thank you, everyone," he said.Copper There was no way they'd let me go free. I flipped my hair over my shoulder and folded my arms. The girl beside me wouldn't stop crying. She bawled so loudly with her face in her palms that if we weren't alone, I'm sure we would be the spectacle of anyone who passed by. All this over a slap to the face. I rolled my eyes. The blue office door opened and we both looked up. The first person to step through was our principal, Mr. Hardley. As he turned to us he fixed his gaze on me, face riddled with disgust. I looked him in his stone cold blue eyes, making sure he knew the feeling was more than reciprocated. My parents trailed behind him, heads lowered. "You two, I spoke with both of your parents," Principal Hardley said. "Betty." Betty sat up and wiped her eyes, her light brown swept her shoulders each time she moved. "I called your parents. They said they would be back by Friday, at the latest. And as for you," he pointed at me. "I don't want to see you until then." "
Copper I could tell Dad was still as confused as ever. Mom and the man have barely said a word to each other, yet he was smiling as if he said it all. "Grace," he started, "It's been a long time since we've last talked to each other like this, face to face." "Mom, I'm hungry," I interjected before she could respond. "We should go home soon before it gets late." I said partly looking at him, but kept my demeanor calm and oblivious. Until he turned to stare at me, then I couldn't help but frown. To my dismay, he started smiling and coming over to where I was. I took a step back. "My, is that Copper? You've grown so much I couldn't tell." Dad placed his arm over my shoulders. He eyed the old man up and down. "Sweetie, who is this?" My mother rested her hands on her hips and sighed. Some students passed by, too lost in their conversation to find anything wrong. "Daniel, this is Mister Harmony, Johnathon's father. And Copper's-" "An unknown stranger that left us to suffer," I inte
Copper"His wife?!" My mouth hung open in shock. "That's the last thing I said, yes," Mr. Harmony stated patiently. "Only for a little while, it's not permanent." Of course I heard everything else he said, about how he wanted to bring me back into the family, and not because of this other rich guy he wants me to marry. The idea of being an heiress represented something I always dreamed about, but was also terrified of at the same time. Being a wealthy daughter would have helped my parents a lot, I'm not blind to that. All the things I could do with that money, all the ways I could make sure the people whom always stood by my side live in luxury for the rest of their days. But there was also the issue where I don't know this man, nor whether what he said was true. For all I know, the Harmony enterprise could be bankrupt and they're trying to use me as the scrap goat. Not cool! I don't like that at all, and I would hate myself for being stupid enough to fall for his tricks. Howev
Copper Mr. Harmony drove us the rest of the way home, and boy oh boy have I never seen my neighbours' jaws drop that low. I tried to take out the groceries, but my bags were taken by his guards. They brought all of them into the house faster than I ever could. I didn't mind. I simply shrugged and headed inside, along with my parents. We didn't have a lot, but what we had was enough to keep us comfortable. The living room and kitchen were one with a small dining table smack in the middle. The foyer was only wide enough to occupy a carpet and a shoe rack. However, although small, we did our best to keep it clean. I was hit with the calming scent of wildflowers, something that was always a pleasure after coming home from an awful day spent outside. Thankfully, he didn't make any comments about the size of my home. Instead, he told Mom and Dad that he was grateful for their approval. "Well, I didn't exactly say I approved it," Daniel stated. "But I do want my girl to have a better l
Copper I now regret nothing. The light from the chandelier reflected off the black floor. Jasmine white walls surrounded us and made up most of the interior. The windows closest to the door extended to the ceiling. To the left, there was a staircase with a banister made up of a dark type of wood. Sylvester walked beside me, allowing me to take it all in with a smile. "Aran will bring your bags up and show you your room." Sylvester motioned to the butler who bowed his head. "When you're done changing into something more comfortable, please feel free to join us for dinner." I turned to him. "Is this all yours or do you like, rent out the place to tenants?" I asked. He waved a finger instead of shaking his head. "Never. No one without Harmony blood has been allowed to stay on the property. Ever. There is a guesthouse not far from here that's still on our land, but not considered a part of the estate." I nodded. "Go on. Dinner will be ready soon." "Okay." The butler, or Aran, bega
Copper Sylvester traveled out of the house. I followed behind, trying not too pay too much attention to the makeshift wind lifting the hem of my skirt. The backyard greeted us with its tranquil beauty. Scattered acorn trees protected the spider lilies from the sun, not that they needed much protection now that the sun was setting. A dragonfly hovered over a water fountain. The faded sunlight reflected off a stone bench with butterflies curved into its legs. Mr. Harmony walked on a cobblestone path that led him to a large pond at the end of it. Lily pads covered one fourth of the surface. I watched as he went down on one knee and disturbed the water, which also ended up frightening the carps swimming beneath it. I listened out for his bones to creek. They didn't, but they could've. Sylvester played with his reflection as he spoke. "You know, when your father was young, he hated water." I raised my eyebrow, but didn't say anything as he continued. "My wife and I are divorced, but
CopperBefore I could say a word, Mr. Harmony stepped forward. He extended his hand. "Please, there's no need for that. Mr. Hardley, I assume? I am Copper's grandfather. Her mother would like to apologize for not being here as she was requested to work together.""Uh huh." Mr. Hardley gave his hand a stiff shake. "What about her step-father?"Betty snorted. When I glared in her direction, she turned away."An emergency occurred at his workplace. He sends his greetings." Mr. Harmony smiled. However, his smile didn't seem to melt Mr. Hardley's icy heart."I would prefer more than his greetings, but let's carry on."Sylvester released his hand and sat down at the opposite end of the room to Betty's parents. His guard stayed at the door with me to his right. Mr. Hardley barely acknowledged his presence. Or maybe it was that he didn't care.I shouldn't be surprised. He had yet to ask for my grandfather's name."Sir," the principal started, clasped hands placed over his desk. "Are you aware
Copper "I'm sorry," Mrs. Lionheart rested her hand on her hip. "Is there something we're missing? Mr. Hardley, get rid of that child now or we will remove our funding from this school." "Woman," Mr. Hardley exclaimed. "Do you not know who this is?!" Mrs. Lionheart took a step back as if Hardley used his voice to slap her. "I beg your pardon?" Sylvester placed one leg over the other. "Both of you own the Falcon Constructions company, with seven branches all over the nation. You tried to get our attention in order to work on a collab for one of our new buildings." Mr. and Mrs. Lionheart's mouths dropped. I smirked. Frustrated, or maybe just wanting to save his image in Sylvester's eyes, Mr. Hardley spelt it out for them. "This is Mr. Sylvester Harmony, owner and executive director of Harmony Enterprises! He is one of THE most sort after businessman on this continent and the only one who accepts apprentices." Yeah, that's right. Quake in his wake, ya' basic bitches. "I-is that so?"
*Kenny* I grew annoyed with myself. This was not the time nor place for my sexual frustration to catch up with me. From what I could gather, Julia listened and pretended that we weren’t there. As long as we kept quiet, then it shouldn’t be difficult to go unnoticed. The problem with that was that I couldn’t guarantee I could maintain that position for much longer. Her scent kept flooding into my nose. Our eyes met. I stiffened. She mouthed something to me. “That’s not your stepmom, is it?” I thought twice about how much I should tell her. It’s not like she is actually a part of this family. If I lied to her then there wouldn’t be an issue. “No, it isn’t,” I decided to tell the truth instead. Copper nodded in acknowledgement, but instead of going back to looking at the door, she kept her eyes on me. I found myself subconsciously counting every lash, taking in her heated cheeks along with the stray hair that had detached itself from the rest when I pulled her in here. I fel
KennyI remembered what my mother said. If there were any problems in Caroline's and his marriage, then I should tell her right away. Georgina had never had any respect for Caroline. I knew she gossiped with her friends as to how long their marriage would last. She delighted in seeing his life fall apart. And for the most part, I didn’t disagree with her.Up to this day, I didn’t know the reason for my parents’ divorce. They told me a bogus lie, something about them falling out of love, but it wasn’t enough. I’ve long since stopped trying to find out. But after seeing my father’s behavior firsthand in adulthood, I think I finally understood why. They were speaking to one of the store clerks. I recognized her as Mandy. “Give her whatever outfit she wants. Treat her well,” Hunter said with a smile. The words were directed at Mandy, but a flirty smile was targeted at that woman. The way he held her, her hushed conversations, and so tenderly she rubbed his arm told me that these two didn
KennyA woman dressed in a black tux approached us as soon as we entered the building. “Good afternoon, Mr. Greenland!” She bowed briefly to us both. “What a pleasure to see you once again! What are you looking for this fine evening?”I laid a hand on Copper’s lower back. “I’m just looking for something for my wife today. I’m thinking elegant, something that can help me show her off. Do you have anything like that in mind, Julia?”I could feel Copper tense but she didn’t say a word as she kept that smile on her face. Julia swept up Copper’s appearance, choosing to linger on her school uniform. It took only one look from me for her to stop. “Of course!” She quickly gestured for us to come further into the store. “This way! We received a new line of dresses not that long ago. I’m sure they will suit her quite well.”Copper and I followed her without complaint. Julia kept her face forward as if he was trying to hide her embarrassment. During our walk, my hand never left Copper back. T
*Caroline*I sat on the bed, bored out of my mind. But I had to stay here. He would be back soon and it had been a while since we slept together. When we first met, Hunter couldn’t keep his hands off me. And now, I could only silently wait until he was in the mood to receive affection. But I had to be patient. I couldn’t complain and make him upset. When we argued, I could feel him slipping through my fingers. I felt like I was losing him. That’s why I learned how to adopt a persona and attitude that would suit his tastes. With my freshly showered body in a white nightgown and my hair flowing over one of my shoulders, I tried to relax. Hunter entered the room. I smiled, feeling a huge weight off my chest. “Honey.” I got up. “You’re back! How was work?”Hunter gave me a swift nod. Instead of answering right away, he loosened the tie around his neck and walked over to the dresser. “It was fine. Did you talk to the salon owner about securing that dress you wanted?”He had yet to spar
Mary SueHe was wrong. I planned on getting away from him and quickly. Whatever he wanted from me wasn't good.I pushed my chair back. “If you leave, your full name, photo, address, and past job history will be posted on social media. Including everything you’ve done while working these… ‘acting gigs’. I have a strong feeling that I’m not the only one who wants to find you.”Gingerly, I sat back down. “I don’t know who you think you’ve found, but I was only leaving because some weirdo is acting like he knows me.”“Are you saying I don’t know you, Mary Sue?” He looked into my eyes. “I mean, you made such a fuss at my wedding. Don’t you want to talk about child support?”I swallowed a ball of spit. Sealing myself, I asked, “What do you want from me?”“Tell me who you’re working for,” he stated plainly. “And what they want with me and my family.”I scoffed. “Right, ‘cause everything is about you. I swear, you rich people make me sick.”The bell above the door rang. I stiffened, thinking
Copper I gave him a polite smile. “I’m fine. Kenny just let me know. What perfect timing.”His smile returned to his face. “Oh, yeah. He isn’t the best at communication.” He laughed and scratched his head, but it seemed forced. After getting no reaction from me, he cleared his throat and opened the passenger door. Once again, I smiled at him and entered. The ride was silent, but not in a peaceful way. I could tell that behind that smile Justin was struggling to say something. The windows were rolled up and the a/c was on, giving us complete privacy.“Do you want some music? I have plenty of new songs in storage so you can play anything you like,” Justin suggested. It would put the silence to rest but I didn’t feel like it. At least not here. I liked listening to music when I had the quiet and peace to enjoy it. There is no way I could get into the mood here.“No thanks,” I said. “I’m fine like this. But if you want to play something I won’t mind.”“You don’t need to worry about me,
CopperI raised my eyebrow. “I’m pretty sure I just told you.”“No, like…” Emily tapped on her bottom lip. “Everyone who’s anyone knows all the things I just told you. It’s not realistic that you claim to be from the Harmony family and yet not experience any of the benefits having that kind of money brings.”Oh, I see. That’s what it is. I kept my calm. “I haven’t lied, if that’s what you’re insinuating. I simply wasn’t raised to be concerned about that stuff.”“Yeah, I bet,” Emily giggled. Sabrine reached forward and whispered into her ear loud enough for me to hear.“I bet she’s some poor scholarship student who’s lying about her last name to seem interesting. If that’s not the case, she’s probably the daughter of a staff member. The ones that clean up after the important people.”I could feel my anger rising to the surface. I breathed in, then breathed out. I’m not at my old school anymore. I made a promise to my grandfather and my parents that I would be on my best behavior. Being
Kenny "That's completely fine with me," I told her. My attention was on Copper, but I was watching Justin through the corner of my eyes. "I'll be home all day, so you'll see me when you get back. My friend is keeping me company." I gestured towards Justin with my hand, causing Justin to sit up properly so she could see him. "Oh." She blinked. Shortly afterwards, Copper formed a smile. "Hi! Sorry, I didn't see you there. Good morning, uh... Sorry, I don't know your name." "Justin." He smiled back. "Nice to meet you." "Nice to meet you too, Justin. I'm Copper." She brought her gaze back to me. "I have my keys, so I'll let myself in when I come back. See you later, bye Justin.” “As, uh, same!” Justin fumbled through his words. By the time he finished talking, Copper had already made it to the front door. She closed it behind her. After she left, Justin looked back at me so fast that I thought he must have been trying to break his own neck. “Sooo, she seems nice,” he said. I
Copper I didn't know how to respond to him. I couldn't. All I could do was grip onto this pristine, white Oakwood table. What I didn't realize that night was that I was scared. Scared that when I tell him the truth, he will take Darling's side and accuse me of being jealous. He'd tell me that I was trying to stain Darling's name because I didn't like her. then he wouldn't listen to a word I say for the next two years, effectively destroying the peace I've worked to build between us. She's his love after all. In what world would he believe me when his "angel" says otherwise? He has never been the nicest person, but he might fully turn against me. But at the time, all I felt was a lot of conflicting feelings that I couldn't quite put into words. After a few deep breaths, I felt a bit calmer. Copper, I thought to myself. Going off on Kenny now would cause problems for me later. Besides, he didn't do anything. I combed my fingers through my hair and took one last, deep breath. I sp
