Copper

"His wife?!"

My mouth hung open in shock.

"That's the last thing I said, yes," Mr. Harmony stated patiently. "Only for a little while, it's not permanent."

Of course I heard everything else he said, about how he wanted to bring me back into the family, and not because of this other rich guy he wants me to marry.

The idea of being an heiress represented something I always dreamed about, but was also terrified of at the same time.

Being a wealthy daughter would have helped my parents a lot, I'm not blind to that. All the things I could do with that money, all the ways I could make sure the people whom always stood by my side live in luxury for the rest of their days.

But there was also the issue where I don't know this man, nor whether what he said was true. For all I know, the Harmony enterprise could be bankrupt and they're trying to use me as the scrap goat. Not cool! I don't like that at all, and I would hate myself for being stupid enough to fall for his tricks.

However, what do I have to lose? If something was wrong with their finances I would find out once I'm there. Plus, I stole a glance at Mom, they need me.

"His parents already know the one he will want to marry. But first they need to bring up her station. She comes from a very low background, so it will be a while before she is respected enough to be considered for marriage with their only son."

I nodded. I pretended to be completely immersed in what he was saying but in reality all I was judging Kenny Greenland's parents in my mind. What a bunch of prudes to think just because someone is poor they aren't worthy of being in their family.

"Yeah, I don't know about that."

He tried to reason with me. "You'll only be a distraction, that's all."

Not helping me feel more inclined to the idea. I can't imagine being just a distraction to a man I married, who doesn't even want me!

Not that I would prefer it that way.

"Sylvester Harmony," he turned to my mother who looked at him incredulously. "Aren't you asking

for too much? She's only nineteen and in highschool! This is her last year and the last thing she needs is a marriage with some stuck up family's son!"

Okay, she was losing herself and it showed. "Mom is right," I held her hand. "School is more important."

Mom smiled and squeezed my hand.

Harmony shook his head so fast I was afraid he would break his neck. "No, I would never separate you from Grace nor stop you from attending classes."

"You wouldn't?" I blinked. "Oh." Well that's good.

"Absolutely not. They are your family, hence they are mine as well."

Mom glanced out the window. Harmony continued.

"How about this? I won't force you to inherit the Harmony estate or abandon your morals. Instead, after the two years you've spent with Kenny and the divorce, you can choose whether to stay in the family or not. If you choose not to, then I will grant you 80 million to do as you wish. Then in another three years I will leave you with an undisclosed amount. That's it. As an added bonus you'll never have to do anything for me again."

I tried to get a read from Grace but she only shrugged, her way of saying 'do what you want to do'. When I looked at Daniel he showed the same sentiment, neither nodding nor shaking his head as he frowned. Guess I couldn't depend on them to make the decision for me.

"Only two years?" By that time I'll be twenty-one with millions I could use to do whatever I wanted. Harmony nodded, lips turned into a smile.

"Two years." He confirmed.

"I'm in."

After all, spending a few hours of my day with someone who would probably cheat on me and stay out of my way didn't seem that bad. What's the worst that could happen when we most likely won't even be sleeping in the same room?

Kenny

If that man wanted me to do the work and get it done by the end of the day, then he should answer when I send him a message to review the file.

Yet here I am, walking down his floor with a document that should have been approved ages ago in my hands.

My father always had a thing against light colors, so the walls surrounding the pathway to his office were as dark as my button shirt. At least he made sure to install some windows, so the hall wasn't half as dreary compared to the man himself.

"Good morning, Mr. Greenland." Dad's secretary sprang to her feet as soon as she saw me. I nodded in her direction.

"Morning, Miss Smith. Do you know if he's in?" I asked.

"Yes, he will be departing soon, but he is still inside."

After giving her a 'thank you', I took a right and continued to my dad's office.

I knocked on the door once. Then I heard some shuffling from inside. Then laugher. It didn't sound like the way he usually laughed. Way too melodic.

The first knock was just a courtesy. The second never happened. Once I turned the knob and started opening the door, I was hit with a whiff of melon scented perfume. My confusion was pushed aside for the sight I saw in front of me.

Mr. Greenland smiled as a woman straightened his collar and laughed at something he said. I stood and watched, the opening only allowing a sliver of vision. He leaned down and did something, or whispered some words into her ear. Whichever it was, it caused her to smile.

And this raven haired, slender young woman was not my stepmother.

I opened the door all the way, and that woman stepped back until she was two feet away from him. She nodded at Dad then swiftly departed the room, greeting me on the way out. Soon as she was gone, I marched right up to my father.

"At least now I know why you didn't answer your emails," I said. He didn't even try to meet my eyes.

He focused solely on his physical presentation.

"Next time you could have just sent a text," he grumbled.

I sighed and rolled my eyes. "I did, but I didn't get a reply from you," I said.

Dad blew harshly through his nose. "Is that the proposal for Pixel Corp? Give it here."

I handed it to him and waited until he finished reading. In the meantime, I looked around.

Dad liked to surround himself in darkness, said it aided his thoughts. There wasn't a single window in this place, save for a vent right above a set of deep orange antique sofas to help bring oxygen into the room. There was a light bulb smack in the center of the ceiling, yet he only utilized the yellow lamp sitting on his desk.

Nothing was out of place. Not even the cushions.

Was I wrong?

"Great," my attention snapped back to him. He slapped the folder shut and handed it back to me. "But lower the investment by $2,000,000, Oscar will rise it by himself once he sees it."

I nodded. As I took the proposal back I asked him what was on my mind. "Who was she?"

He raised his eyebrow. "An employee."

"She seemed pretty close for an employee."

I started to chuckle but Dad's face showed no expression. He walked up to me, then stared right into my face.

"She. Is. An employee." He emphasized each word. "No more, no less. Now get this done. It's not the only thing I have for you to do today."

He left me standing in his office. I could do nothing more than stare at his back, wondering what exactly his words meant, and why did he feel the need to say it twice.

Copper Mr. Harmony drove us the rest of the way home, and boy oh boy have I never seen my neighbours' jaws drop that low. I tried to take out the groceries, but my bags were taken by his guards. They brought all of them into the house faster than I ever could. I didn't mind. I simply shrugged and headed inside, along with my parents. We didn't have a lot, but what we had was enough to keep us comfortable. The living room and kitchen were one with a small dining table smack in the middle. The foyer was only wide enough to occupy a carpet and a shoe rack. However, although small, we did our best to keep it clean. I was hit with the calming scent of wildflowers, something that was always a pleasure after coming home from an awful day spent outside. Thankfully, he didn't make any comments about the size of my home. Instead, he told Mom and Dad that he was grateful for their approval. "Well, I didn't exactly say I approved it," Daniel stated. "But I do want my girl to have a better l

Copper I now regret nothing. The light from the chandelier reflected off the black floor. Jasmine white walls surrounded us and made up most of the interior. The windows closest to the door extended to the ceiling. To the left, there was a staircase with a banister made up of a dark type of wood. Sylvester walked beside me, allowing me to take it all in with a smile. "Aran will bring your bags up and show you your room." Sylvester motioned to the butler who bowed his head. "When you're done changing into something more comfortable, please feel free to join us for dinner." I turned to him. "Is this all yours or do you like, rent out the place to tenants?" I asked. He waved a finger instead of shaking his head. "Never. No one without Harmony blood has been allowed to stay on the property. Ever. There is a guesthouse not far from here that's still on our land, but not considered a part of the estate." I nodded. "Go on. Dinner will be ready soon." "Okay." The butler, or Aran, bega

Copper Sylvester traveled out of the house. I followed behind, trying not too pay too much attention to the makeshift wind lifting the hem of my skirt. The backyard greeted us with its tranquil beauty. Scattered acorn trees protected the spider lilies from the sun, not that they needed much protection now that the sun was setting. A dragonfly hovered over a water fountain. The faded sunlight reflected off a stone bench with butterflies curved into its legs. Mr. Harmony walked on a cobblestone path that led him to a large pond at the end of it. Lily pads covered one fourth of the surface. I watched as he went down on one knee and disturbed the water, which also ended up frightening the carps swimming beneath it. I listened out for his bones to creek. They didn't, but they could've. Sylvester played with his reflection as he spoke. "You know, when your father was young, he hated water." I raised my eyebrow, but didn't say anything as he continued. "My wife and I are divorced, but

CopperBefore I could say a word, Mr. Harmony stepped forward. He extended his hand. "Please, there's no need for that. Mr. Hardley, I assume? I am Copper's grandfather. Her mother would like to apologize for not being here as she was requested to work together.""Uh huh." Mr. Hardley gave his hand a stiff shake. "What about her step-father?"Betty snorted. When I glared in her direction, she turned away."An emergency occurred at his workplace. He sends his greetings." Mr. Harmony smiled. However, his smile didn't seem to melt Mr. Hardley's icy heart."I would prefer more than his greetings, but let's carry on."Sylvester released his hand and sat down at the opposite end of the room to Betty's parents. His guard stayed at the door with me to his right. Mr. Hardley barely acknowledged his presence. Or maybe it was that he didn't care.I shouldn't be surprised. He had yet to ask for my grandfather's name."Sir," the principal started, clasped hands placed over his desk. "Are you aware

Copper "I'm sorry," Mrs. Lionheart rested her hand on her hip. "Is there something we're missing? Mr. Hardley, get rid of that child now or we will remove our funding from this school." "Woman," Mr. Hardley exclaimed. "Do you not know who this is?!" Mrs. Lionheart took a step back as if Hardley used his voice to slap her. "I beg your pardon?" Sylvester placed one leg over the other. "Both of you own the Falcon Constructions company, with seven branches all over the nation. You tried to get our attention in order to work on a collab for one of our new buildings." Mr. and Mrs. Lionheart's mouths dropped. I smirked. Frustrated, or maybe just wanting to save his image in Sylvester's eyes, Mr. Hardley spelt it out for them. "This is Mr. Sylvester Harmony, owner and executive director of Harmony Enterprises! He is one of THE most sort after businessman on this continent and the only one who accepts apprentices." Yeah, that's right. Quake in his wake, ya' basic bitches. "I-is that so?"

Copper Stepping out the school doors felt like tasting freedom for the first time. “Are you really transferring me to that fancy school?” I asked. Sylvester smiled. “I don’t see any reason why I would lie.” Then it’s decided. I’ll be leaving here for the last time. I couldn’t help but smile. It was so crazy, yet, I knew I wanted to let go of this place. So many lovely memories. Both good and bad. But not enough to make me want to stay. We walked down the steps. No one was outside except for the gardening trimming the hedges near the gates. Maybe after today, I could finally take school seriously enough to graduate, go to college, make my parents happy. It was pretty late to start applying but never say never. I might just make it. “Are the folks there as insane as this school?” He stopped. His hand went up to my ponytail and lifted it in the air. The blonde strands fell from his grip hair by hair. “Certainly. However, we have to do something about this hair.” I raised my eyebrow

Kenny Sylvester was the first to speak. “It’s good seeing you again, Mr. and Mrs. Greenland, the Allisons, Georgina, Kenny and little Maria.” Mr. Harmony exchanged pleasantries with everyone present. I shook his hand and returned the greeting, but from the corner of my eyes, I observed her. She didn’t introduce herself right away. She stood silently with her hands resting gracefully below her stomach. That smile didn’t move from her face. After Georgina gave him a hug, Master stepped back and placed his palm on her shoulder. “Ah, what nice music. I would like to introduce you to Copper Harmony, my only grandchild.” So that’s her name. She shared the same one as her grandmother. Copper stepped forward, but instead of coming to me, she approached my father’s wife. “Nice to meet you,” there was a slight pep in her voice. “I presume you’re Caroline, right? I am Copper, and might I say I love your dress!” She blushed and pushed a stray platinum blonde hair out of her vision. “Why

Kenny I was more than prepared for her outburst. But instead, I got her pity. “OMG, Kenny, are you alright?” Copper shot out of her seat and held me up by the shoulders. “Are you hurt anywhere?” “The sauce…” I blinked. She shook her head. “Don’t you worry about it! It’s only food. You’re more important.” I heard my father’s voice. He sounded pissed. “Boy, what’s wrong with you?!” Dad shouted. “Are your eyes for show? Did you fall asleep while standing up? Huh?!” “I-I… It was an accident. I swear. I’m sorry Miss Harmony.” “Please, call me Copper.” At the same time, Dad’s wife held Copper from the side. “Come with me. Let’s get you changed.” She nodded and allowed herself to be led away from the table. I looked back at everyone. As a butler removed the bowl from my hand, I gulped. Mom’s glare pierced my flesh like icicles. But, since frowning would give her wrinkles, she sat up and took a deep breath. “Son,” she spoke through clenched teeth. “Apologize to Mr. Harmony, and take

*Kenny* I grew annoyed with myself. This was not the time nor place for my sexual frustration to catch up with me. From what I could gather, Julia listened and pretended that we weren’t there. As long as we kept quiet, then it shouldn’t be difficult to go unnoticed. The problem with that was that I couldn’t guarantee I could maintain that position for much longer. Her scent kept flooding into my nose. Our eyes met. I stiffened. She mouthed something to me. “That’s not your stepmom, is it?” I thought twice about how much I should tell her. It’s not like she is actually a part of this family. If I lied to her then there wouldn’t be an issue. “No, it isn’t,” I decided to tell the truth instead. Copper nodded in acknowledgement, but instead of going back to looking at the door, she kept her eyes on me. I found myself subconsciously counting every lash, taking in her heated cheeks along with the stray hair that had detached itself from the rest when I pulled her in here. I fel

KennyI remembered what my mother said. If there were any problems in Caroline's and his marriage, then I should tell her right away. Georgina had never had any respect for Caroline. I knew she gossiped with her friends as to how long their marriage would last. She delighted in seeing his life fall apart. And for the most part, I didn’t disagree with her.Up to this day, I didn’t know the reason for my parents’ divorce. They told me a bogus lie, something about them falling out of love, but it wasn’t enough. I’ve long since stopped trying to find out. But after seeing my father’s behavior firsthand in adulthood, I think I finally understood why. They were speaking to one of the store clerks. I recognized her as Mandy. “Give her whatever outfit she wants. Treat her well,” Hunter said with a smile. The words were directed at Mandy, but a flirty smile was targeted at that woman. The way he held her, her hushed conversations, and so tenderly she rubbed his arm told me that these two didn

KennyA woman dressed in a black tux approached us as soon as we entered the building. “Good afternoon, Mr. Greenland!” She bowed briefly to us both. “What a pleasure to see you once again! What are you looking for this fine evening?”I laid a hand on Copper’s lower back. “I’m just looking for something for my wife today. I’m thinking elegant, something that can help me show her off. Do you have anything like that in mind, Julia?”I could feel Copper tense but she didn’t say a word as she kept that smile on her face. Julia swept up Copper’s appearance, choosing to linger on her school uniform. It took only one look from me for her to stop. “Of course!” She quickly gestured for us to come further into the store. “This way! We received a new line of dresses not that long ago. I’m sure they will suit her quite well.”Copper and I followed her without complaint. Julia kept her face forward as if he was trying to hide her embarrassment. During our walk, my hand never left Copper back. T

*Caroline*I sat on the bed, bored out of my mind. But I had to stay here. He would be back soon and it had been a while since we slept together. When we first met, Hunter couldn’t keep his hands off me. And now, I could only silently wait until he was in the mood to receive affection. But I had to be patient. I couldn’t complain and make him upset. When we argued, I could feel him slipping through my fingers. I felt like I was losing him. That’s why I learned how to adopt a persona and attitude that would suit his tastes. With my freshly showered body in a white nightgown and my hair flowing over one of my shoulders, I tried to relax. Hunter entered the room. I smiled, feeling a huge weight off my chest. “Honey.” I got up. “You’re back! How was work?”Hunter gave me a swift nod. Instead of answering right away, he loosened the tie around his neck and walked over to the dresser. “It was fine. Did you talk to the salon owner about securing that dress you wanted?”He had yet to spar

Mary SueHe was wrong. I planned on getting away from him and quickly. Whatever he wanted from me wasn't good.I pushed my chair back. “If you leave, your full name, photo, address, and past job history will be posted on social media. Including everything you’ve done while working these… ‘acting gigs’. I have a strong feeling that I’m not the only one who wants to find you.”Gingerly, I sat back down. “I don’t know who you think you’ve found, but I was only leaving because some weirdo is acting like he knows me.”“Are you saying I don’t know you, Mary Sue?” He looked into my eyes. “I mean, you made such a fuss at my wedding. Don’t you want to talk about child support?”I swallowed a ball of spit. Sealing myself, I asked, “What do you want from me?”“Tell me who you’re working for,” he stated plainly. “And what they want with me and my family.”I scoffed. “Right, ‘cause everything is about you. I swear, you rich people make me sick.”The bell above the door rang. I stiffened, thinking

He isn’t the best at communication.” He laughed and scratched his head, but it seemed forced. After getting no reaction from me, he cleared his throat and opened the passenger door. Once again, I smiled at him and entered. The ride was silent, but not in a peaceful way. I could tell that behind that smile Justin was struggling to say something. The windows were rolled up and the a/c was on, giving us complete privacy.“Do you want some music? I have plenty of new songs in storage so you can play anything you like,” Justin suggested. It would put the silence to rest but I didn’t feel like it. At least not here. I liked listening to music when I had the quiet and peace to enjoy it. There is no way I could get into the mood here.“No thanks,” I said. “I’m fine like this. But if you want to play something I won’t mind.”“You don’t need to worry about me,

I kept my calm. “I haven’t lied, if that’s what you’re insinuating. I simply wasn’t raised to be concerned about that stuff.”“Yeah, I bet,” Emily giggled. Sabrine reached forward and whispered into her ear loud enough for me to hear.“I bet she’s some poor scholarship student who’s lying about her last name to seem interesting. If that’s not the case, she’s probably the daughter of a staff member. The ones that clean up after the important people.”I could feel my anger rising to the surface. She brought her gaze back to me. "I have my keys, so I'll let myself in when I come back. See you later, bye Justin.” “As, uh, same!” Justin fumbled through his words. By the time he finished talking, Copper had already made it to the front door. She closed it behind her. He'd tell me that I was trying to stain Darling's name because I didn't like her. then he wouldn't listen to a word I say for the next two years, effectively destroying the peace I've worked to build between us.
