Copper
Mr. Harmony drove us the rest of the way home, and boy oh boy have I never seen my neighbours' jaws drop that low. I tried to take out the groceries, but my bags were taken by his guards. They brought all of them into the house faster than I ever could. I didn't mind. I simply shrugged and headed inside, along with my parents.
We didn't have a lot, but what we had was enough to keep us comfortable. The living room and kitchen were one with a small dining table smack in the middle. The foyer was only wide enough to occupy a carpet and a shoe rack. However, although small, we did our best to keep it clean. I was hit with the calming scent of wildflowers, something that was always a pleasure after coming home from an awful day spent outside.
Thankfully, he didn't make any comments about the size of my home. Instead, he told Mom and Dad that he was grateful for their approval.
"Well, I didn't exactly say I approved it," Daniel stated. "But I do want my girl to have a better life. If that means going with you and following this crazy plot, then I'm up for it."
I walked over to his side and hugged him. He wrapped one arm around me and squeezed me just as hard. I might never be able to tell Daniel how much I loved and appreciated him more than my own father. Sure, it might sound cruel because he died, but I didn't know him very well. Daniel was the only father I knew.
"I can tell how much you love her," Mr. Harmony said. Suddenly his eyes were downcast as if he was missing something that he had lost.
Daniel nodded. "I love her like a daughter because that's what she is to me."
"Aww," I tease. Then smiled when Daniel looked down on me. "Sometimes," he said while smirking. I immediately let go of him and he started laughing. Harmony started chuckling as well while Mom leaned against the wall with a smile on her face.
"We will be leaving within the next right. So get everything you need, Copper."
"Wait, right now? I haven't even had dinner."
"We only have two weeks before the wedding day, remember?"
I nodded. I knew he was right. I just wished I had some of Mommy's stir-fried rice before I left.
I stood at the door with my backpack in hand. Mr. Harmony's guards placed my suitcase in the trunk. And here I thought I would never use it.
"I will miss you guys," my mother gathered me and Daniel in a big hug. "I will come back to visit often."
"I know you will," Dad said as he patted my back.
As we parted, Mom picked up a sealed container off the food stand and handed it to me. "Here. Make sure to eat it very sloppily in your grandfather's crisp car."
I giggled, and Mr. Harmony rolled his head back and groaned as if he was under attack.
She placed a fork wrapped in plastic on top, then leaned forward, giving me one last kiss on the forehead with her soft lips. I kept the feeling of that kiss as one of my most treasured memories. I didn't know how soon I would see my parents again, but I would do everything in my power to make sure they were okay.
I waved goodbye and entered the car.
My unease didn't calm down even when I was miles away from home. I leaned against the window and watched as the streetlights passed me by. It felt kind of... empty. I know I was entering a world of possibilities, but that didn't make me feel better. The road ahead was unknown, hidden behind of clouds of uncertainty.
"You will love it there," Mr. Harmony said. I kept my gaze on the window. "More food than you can ever eat and a wardrobe I'm sure that a girl your age will love. Do you have a favorite celebrity? Who can tell, you might even get to meet them."
I could tell he was trying to pique my interest with promises of glamour and a Disney princess-like life. That wouldn't work, though. I dreamed about it so often that the dream turned sour.
"I just feel so. Strange," I said. I might as well give him a chance to hear my thoughts and see how he reacts.
Mr. Harmony nodded. He held up the stick and gave it to the guard sitting beside him. "It will be, I'm certain that such a big change won't be easy. But you will have me there and my people will make sure your every need is fulfilled."
I nodded, not wanting to say more until a thought crossed my mind.
"What should I call you?" I asked. He offered me a small smile.
"Grandpa will suffice."
"Oh..."
"But if you're not ready, 'Sylvester' will do just fine."
"I don't mean to make you feel bad, it's just... it'll take some time. The grandpa thing is new to me."
I pressed a button on the door handle, allowing some cold wind to hit my face. I hissed and hit the one next to it. The next second, the window was up again and I was rubbing my arms. "Here." Before I could turn to look he covered me with his jacket. I nodded, pulling the jacket around me. "Thanks..." I muttered. He didn't say a word, he simply joined me in staring at the landscape.
Needless to say, I had no idea where we were going. So when I saw the sign saying You Are Now Leaving Cinderville I got a little freaked out.
"How long until we get there?"
"Not long now, Copper. In fact, I believe we're here."
Sure enough, we were.
We passed through large these large ass steel gates taller than my house, but not before I caught sight of gold plated words telling us that we were now entering The Golden Hills Gated Community.
My mind. Was. Blown.
Glass walls, three-storey mansions. A villa with a deep, blue pool I could see from here as we continued to drive uphill. I couldn't resist pressing my face against the window. One of the houses had a party on the roof with lights flashing all the colors of the rainbow, one color at a time. It was mesmerizing, especially with the sky so dark. Okay, now I'm pumped! I can't wait until we reach the estate.
Sylvester was more than likely watching me, but I didn't mind. I was too obsessed with the view.
Sadly, my vision was blocked by trees and I couldn't see much. But that only lasted for a few seconds.
I did not expect what I saw when we turned the corner.
When Sylvester said estate, he really did mean it.
There were multiple white villas on a manicured white lawn, with a magnificent water fountain smack in the middle. Compared to the other houses in the neighbourhood, his property had not one glass wall. But the fountain was glowing, I could see it from here as we descended. I couldn't tell how many floors they held from this height, however, I could tell that the one in front of the others stood the tallest.
Broken columns resembling those from ancient Greece lined the driveway made up of dark grey, Leicester paving blocks. The car parked before an arch leading to the main door. Three people, who I presumed to be servants, bowed as we came to a complete stop. A man in typical butler attire, and two women in full black.
Sylvester stepped out first. He held his palm out in front of me. It took a minute for me to get what he wanted me to do. Then it hit me, and I smiled nervously as I took his hand, allowing him to help me out of the car. "Welcome home, my grandchild," he smiled.
So, this was it. This is where it starts. But will I be able to handle it?
Kenny
I watched her as she stepped out of the vehicle. Who would have thought he actually found someone to play the role. She was beautiful, I could see it from here. Well, admittedly not without the help of binoculars. My driver tapped the wheel as if he couldn't wait to leave. He must have felt nervous being right outside the Harmony estate.
"Are you ready yet, Sir?" Christopher asked for the second time tonight. I rolled my eyes.
"If I was, I would have told you."
"Right. My apologies, Sir."
I waved him off.
After a few seconds spent greeting the workers, they headed up the stairs and went inside with some sort of bowl in her hands. I let the binocular fall onto my chest and rubbed my chin. The old man has already made his move. What should mine be?
"Christopher."
He jumped in his seat. "Yes, sir?"
"Clear my schedule for Saturday," I smirked. "I need time to groom myself in order to keep up with my pretty bride."
Copper I now regret nothing. The light from the chandelier reflected off the black floor. Jasmine white walls surrounded us and made up most of the interior. The windows closest to the door extended to the ceiling. To the left, there was a staircase with a banister made up of a dark type of wood. Sylvester walked beside me, allowing me to take it all in with a smile. "Aran will bring your bags up and show you your room." Sylvester motioned to the butler who bowed his head. "When you're done changing into something more comfortable, please feel free to join us for dinner." I turned to him. "Is this all yours or do you like, rent out the place to tenants?" I asked. He waved a finger instead of shaking his head. "Never. No one without Harmony blood has been allowed to stay on the property. Ever. There is a guesthouse not far from here that's still on our land, but not considered a part of the estate." I nodded. "Go on. Dinner will be ready soon." "Okay." The butler, or Aran, bega
Copper Sylvester traveled out of the house. I followed behind, trying not too pay too much attention to the makeshift wind lifting the hem of my skirt. The backyard greeted us with its tranquil beauty. Scattered acorn trees protected the spider lilies from the sun, not that they needed much protection now that the sun was setting. A dragonfly hovered over a water fountain. The faded sunlight reflected off a stone bench with butterflies curved into its legs. Mr. Harmony walked on a cobblestone path that led him to a large pond at the end of it. Lily pads covered one fourth of the surface. I watched as he went down on one knee and disturbed the water, which also ended up frightening the carps swimming beneath it. I listened out for his bones to creek. They didn't, but they could've. Sylvester played with his reflection as he spoke. "You know, when your father was young, he hated water." I raised my eyebrow, but didn't say anything as he continued. "My wife and I are divorced, but
CopperBefore I could say a word, Mr. Harmony stepped forward. He extended his hand. "Please, there's no need for that. Mr. Hardley, I assume? I am Copper's grandfather. Her mother would like to apologize for not being here as she was requested to work together.""Uh huh." Mr. Hardley gave his hand a stiff shake. "What about her step-father?"Betty snorted. When I glared in her direction, she turned away."An emergency occurred at his workplace. He sends his greetings." Mr. Harmony smiled. However, his smile didn't seem to melt Mr. Hardley's icy heart."I would prefer more than his greetings, but let's carry on."Sylvester released his hand and sat down at the opposite end of the room to Betty's parents. His guard stayed at the door with me to his right. Mr. Hardley barely acknowledged his presence. Or maybe it was that he didn't care.I shouldn't be surprised. He had yet to ask for my grandfather's name."Sir," the principal started, clasped hands placed over his desk. "Are you aware
Copper "I'm sorry," Mrs. Lionheart rested her hand on her hip. "Is there something we're missing? Mr. Hardley, get rid of that child now or we will remove our funding from this school." "Woman," Mr. Hardley exclaimed. "Do you not know who this is?!" Mrs. Lionheart took a step back as if Hardley used his voice to slap her. "I beg your pardon?" Sylvester placed one leg over the other. "Both of you own the Falcon Constructions company, with seven branches all over the nation. You tried to get our attention in order to work on a collab for one of our new buildings." Mr. and Mrs. Lionheart's mouths dropped. I smirked. Frustrated, or maybe just wanting to save his image in Sylvester's eyes, Mr. Hardley spelt it out for them. "This is Mr. Sylvester Harmony, owner and executive director of Harmony Enterprises! He is one of THE most sort after businessman on this continent and the only one who accepts apprentices." Yeah, that's right. Quake in his wake, ya' basic bitches. "I-is that so?"
Copper Stepping out the school doors felt like tasting freedom for the first time. “Are you really transferring me to that fancy school?” I asked. Sylvester smiled. “I don’t see any reason why I would lie.” Then it’s decided. I’ll be leaving here for the last time. I couldn’t help but smile. It was so crazy, yet, I knew I wanted to let go of this place. So many lovely memories. Both good and bad. But not enough to make me want to stay. We walked down the steps. No one was outside except for the gardening trimming the hedges near the gates. Maybe after today, I could finally take school seriously enough to graduate, go to college, make my parents happy. It was pretty late to start applying but never say never. I might just make it. “Are the folks there as insane as this school?” He stopped. His hand went up to my ponytail and lifted it in the air. The blonde strands fell from his grip hair by hair. “Certainly. However, we have to do something about this hair.” I raised my eyebrow
Kenny Sylvester was the first to speak. “It’s good seeing you again, Mr. and Mrs. Greenland, the Allisons, Georgina, Kenny and little Maria.” Mr. Harmony exchanged pleasantries with everyone present. I shook his hand and returned the greeting, but from the corner of my eyes, I observed her. She didn’t introduce herself right away. She stood silently with her hands resting gracefully below her stomach. That smile didn’t move from her face. After Georgina gave him a hug, Master stepped back and placed his palm on her shoulder. “Ah, what nice music. I would like to introduce you to Copper Harmony, my only grandchild.” So that’s her name. She shared the same one as her grandmother. Copper stepped forward, but instead of coming to me, she approached my father’s wife. “Nice to meet you,” there was a slight pep in her voice. “I presume you’re Caroline, right? I am Copper, and might I say I love your dress!” She blushed and pushed a stray platinum blonde hair out of her vision. “Why
Kenny I was more than prepared for her outburst. But instead, I got her pity. “OMG, Kenny, are you alright?” Copper shot out of her seat and held me up by the shoulders. “Are you hurt anywhere?” “The sauce…” I blinked. She shook her head. “Don’t you worry about it! It’s only food. You’re more important.” I heard my father’s voice. He sounded pissed. “Boy, what’s wrong with you?!” Dad shouted. “Are your eyes for show? Did you fall asleep while standing up? Huh?!” “I-I… It was an accident. I swear. I’m sorry Miss Harmony.” “Please, call me Copper.” At the same time, Dad’s wife held Copper from the side. “Come with me. Let’s get you changed.” She nodded and allowed herself to be led away from the table. I looked back at everyone. As a butler removed the bowl from my hand, I gulped. Mom’s glare pierced my flesh like icicles. But, since frowning would give her wrinkles, she sat up and took a deep breath. “Son,” she spoke through clenched teeth. “Apologize to Mr. Harmony, and take
Copper “There they are!” Someone exclaimed. Kenny and I slowly strode down the stairs. Not only that, but my arm wrapped around his. Both of us smiled as if nothing was wrong. However, while we walked together, we didn’t hesitate to whisper our raw, and honest thoughts. “Marrying me won’t give you a better life,” Kenny said, nodding at his mother. “You’ll be in the center of the public eye and sooner or later they’ll make you a spectacle.” “I appreciate looking out for me,” I grinned at everyone. “But Mr. Harmony, you might know him, he’s your mentor, will teach me how to react if such an event were to arise.” “Mr. Harmony, can’t say I ever heard of him. Is he the reason you can act so well?” “Oh my, so you don’t know him. My bad, honey~ I don’t know how I could have mistaken you for one of his educated and well-mannered disciples.” Kenny sat in his chair and I did the same. Mr. Greenland spoke to me. “Did that boy apologize to you, yet?” “Yes, Mr. Greenland. He was a perfect g
*Copper*I poked my head out and checked my surroundings. There were people here but not enough that would be a bother to me. I stepped off the pathway and sat on the closest bench I could find. It was hard, but oddly comfortable. Now that I could be left in peace, all the tension escaped my body. I sighed. Another day of school and catching up to make sure my grades are above passable. Sylvester took one look at my report card and had one of his students, Sher, to give me a test. Once I was done with that, he took one look at my test results, back at the report card, then back at me. We had an hour long conversation about how my grades didn't match up with my intelligence. In my eyes, I did better than most average students. I told him why I repeated a year. That's when he reminded me that there was no longer a need to hold back. That's why he has Sher tutoring me when it's the weekend and during some days of the week to go over what I got wrong. But most of the time I'm listening
*Kenny*I observed the way she watched me, tilting my head to the side.“Is that something you really want to know?” I said. She quickly nodded. “Absolutely! I wouldn't have asked otherwise. I can't help but be curious about you.”There she goes again, acting like a cute wife. I reached for both her hands over the table and held them, my thumbs rubbing the back of them. A smirk formed on my lips.“How could you forget that I fell in love with you the first time I saw you?” I stated boldly. “Your presence has been nothing less than amazing. If only I could have met you when we were children and married you sooner.”I thought my performance was satisfactory. Copper simply rolled her eyes.“I mean it, Mr. Greenland.” She pulled her hands away. I unexpectedly missed the warm feeling of her soft hands. “Why did you go through with the marriage? Were your parents threatening to withdraw your inheritance or something?”I thought about her words. As their only son, my parents wouldn't risk
*Kenny* I grew annoyed with myself. This was not the time nor place for my sexual frustration to catch up with me. From what I could gather, Julia listened and pretended that we weren’t there. As long as we kept quiet, then it shouldn’t be difficult to go unnoticed. The problem with that was that I couldn’t guarantee I could maintain that position for much longer. Her scent kept flooding into my nose. Our eyes met. I stiffened. She mouthed something to me. “That’s not your stepmom, is it?” I thought twice about how much I should tell her. It’s not like she is actually a part of this family. If I lied to her then there wouldn’t be an issue. “No, it isn’t,” I decided to tell the truth instead. Copper nodded in acknowledgement, but instead of going back to looking at the door, she kept her eyes on me. I found myself subconsciously counting every lash, taking in her heated cheeks along with the stray hair that had detached itself from the rest when I pulled her in here. I fel
KennyI remembered what my mother said. If there were any problems in Caroline's and his marriage, then I should tell her right away. Georgina had never had any respect for Caroline. I knew she gossiped with her friends as to how long their marriage would last. She delighted in seeing his life fall apart. And for the most part, I didn’t disagree with her.Up to this day, I didn’t know the reason for my parents’ divorce. They told me a bogus lie, something about them falling out of love, but it wasn’t enough. I’ve long since stopped trying to find out. But after seeing my father’s behavior firsthand in adulthood, I think I finally understood why. They were speaking to one of the store clerks. I recognized her as Mandy. “Give her whatever outfit she wants. Treat her well,” Hunter said with a smile. The words were directed at Mandy, but a flirty smile was targeted at that woman. The way he held her, her hushed conversations, and so tenderly she rubbed his arm told me that these two didn
KennyA woman dressed in a black tux approached us as soon as we entered the building. “Good afternoon, Mr. Greenland!” She bowed briefly to us both. “What a pleasure to see you once again! What are you looking for this fine evening?”I laid a hand on Copper’s lower back. “I’m just looking for something for my wife today. I’m thinking elegant, something that can help me show her off. Do you have anything like that in mind, Julia?”I could feel Copper tense but she didn’t say a word as she kept that smile on her face. Julia swept up Copper’s appearance, choosing to linger on her school uniform. It took only one look from me for her to stop. “Of course!” She quickly gestured for us to come further into the store. “This way! We received a new line of dresses not that long ago. I’m sure they will suit her quite well.”Copper and I followed her without complaint. Julia kept her face forward as if he was trying to hide her embarrassment. During our walk, my hand never left Copper back. T
*Caroline*I sat on the bed, bored out of my mind. But I had to stay here. He would be back soon and it had been a while since we slept together. When we first met, Hunter couldn’t keep his hands off me. And now, I could only silently wait until he was in the mood to receive affection. But I had to be patient. I couldn’t complain and make him upset. When we argued, I could feel him slipping through my fingers. I felt like I was losing him. That’s why I learned how to adopt a persona and attitude that would suit his tastes. With my freshly showered body in a white nightgown and my hair flowing over one of my shoulders, I tried to relax. Hunter entered the room. I smiled, feeling a huge weight off my chest. “Honey.” I got up. “You’re back! How was work?”Hunter gave me a swift nod. Instead of answering right away, he loosened the tie around his neck and walked over to the dresser. “It was fine. Did you talk to the salon owner about securing that dress you wanted?”He had yet to spar
Mary SueHe was wrong. I planned on getting away from him and quickly. Whatever he wanted from me wasn't good.I pushed my chair back. “If you leave, your full name, photo, address, and past job history will be posted on social media. Including everything you’ve done while working these… ‘acting gigs’. I have a strong feeling that I’m not the only one who wants to find you.”Gingerly, I sat back down. “I don’t know who you think you’ve found, but I was only leaving because some weirdo is acting like he knows me.”“Are you saying I don’t know you, Mary Sue?” He looked into my eyes. “I mean, you made such a fuss at my wedding. Don’t you want to talk about child support?”I swallowed a ball of spit. Sealing myself, I asked, “What do you want from me?”“Tell me who you’re working for,” he stated plainly. “And what they want with me and my family.”I scoffed. “Right, ‘cause everything is about you. I swear, you rich people make me sick.”The bell above the door rang. I stiffened, thinking
Copper I gave him a polite smile. “I’m fine. Kenny just let me know. What perfect timing.”His smile returned to his face. “Oh, yeah. He isn’t the best at communication.” He laughed and scratched his head, but it seemed forced. After getting no reaction from me, he cleared his throat and opened the passenger door. Once again, I smiled at him and entered. The ride was silent, but not in a peaceful way. I could tell that behind that smile Justin was struggling to say something. The windows were rolled up and the a/c was on, giving us complete privacy.“Do you want some music? I have plenty of new songs in storage so you can play anything you like,” Justin suggested. It would put the silence to rest but I didn’t feel like it. At least not here. I liked listening to music when I had the quiet and peace to enjoy it. There is no way I could get into the mood here.“No thanks,” I said. “I’m fine like this. But if you want to play something I won’t mind.”“You don’t need to worry about me,
CopperI raised my eyebrow. “I’m pretty sure I just told you.”“No, like…” Emily tapped on her bottom lip. “Everyone who’s anyone knows all the things I just told you. It’s not realistic that you claim to be from the Harmony family and yet not experience any of the benefits having that kind of money brings.”Oh, I see. That’s what it is. I kept my calm. “I haven’t lied, if that’s what you’re insinuating. I simply wasn’t raised to be concerned about that stuff.”“Yeah, I bet,” Emily giggled. Sabrine reached forward and whispered into her ear loud enough for me to hear.“I bet she’s some poor scholarship student who’s lying about her last name to seem interesting. If that’s not the case, she’s probably the daughter of a staff member. The ones that clean up after the important people.”I could feel my anger rising to the surface. I breathed in, then breathed out. I’m not at my old school anymore. I made a promise to my grandfather and my parents that I would be on my best behavior. Being
