When lunch came around, I thought I’d finally gotten a hold of myself. My plan was to turn down Ryan and avoid him and Zak at all costs until the end of the school year. I’d thought everything through. The only problem was around them, my brain seemed to not cooperate.
I went to grab my tray of food from the counter in the cafeteria, but large hands already had a hold of it. “I’ll take that.” Ryan held my tray just out of my reach. Ryan was also tall, but not as tall as Zak. I was only five-foot four, making it easy for him to hold the tray up high and out of my reach. He smiled down at me as he played his game, but I was not the least bit amused. I put my hands on my hips and raised an eyebrow. “You’re sitting with us.” He stated.
I laugh. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Ryan started walking backwards wearing a taunting smile. “Seriously, Ryan.”
“Come on. Just one day.” He moves to my side and leans in close. “I’m hoping it’ll help sway you to go out with us tomorrow.”
“I don’t fit in with your crowd. Surely you see that?” I reasoned, but he was stubborn.
“One day. That’s all I ask.”
I sigh, knowing I was giving in. It felt like a trap, but Ryan wasn’t a mean guy. I’ve seen the guy interact without everyone over the course of four years and never heard a bad thing about him. “Fine.” I gesture for him to lead the way. I’m going to regret this.
We arrive at the table filled with Ryan’s inner circle of friends. He sets his tray down and places it directly next to mine. “Guys, this is El. I believe you know Benny.”
Ben sat across from us and his face lit up. “What up, girl! Decide to stray from the dark side?” He holds out his fist and I bump mine with it. Ben was the only person I could tolerate in school longer than five minutes. He was probably the most genuine guy here. I didn’t know him well, but I did know he hated being called Benny.
The other three guys each gave me a fist bump, seeming to accept me immediately. The two girls however, ignored my presence. I knew each of them, I was very observant, but I doubted they even knew who I was until today.
“Hell, no. She’s not sitting here.” And here comes Kelsey.
Ryan wipes his hand down his face. “Kels, be nice, please.”
“Seriously? You want me to be nice to her?” She scoffs, then turns on her heel, flicking her hair back as she does and walks to an empty table. The two girls grabbed their items and followed behind her quickly.
“She will come around.” Ryan says, picking up his burger.
I shrugged. “I’d really rather she didn’t.” I say, earning laughter from a couple of the guys.
Suddenly, as if my brain could sense him, I turn my head slightly and see Zak sitting alone at a nearby table. My eyes connected with his and his lips were pressed in a tight line as he watched me, not looking particularly happy. Everything in me wanted to go sit at his table, but I stayed put. I pretended not to notice, but he didn’t even eat his food. Just sat there staring at me. I pull my thoughts back to the conversation, trying to follow along with the story that Tyler was telling.
Ryan scoots closer as I pick at my food. I felt odd here, the black sheep of the group. This wasn’t the type of people I would normally hang out with, even if I wanted to. But there was something about Ryan that made me want to find out what his endgame was. I’d never been kissed before, and thought it’d be good to have that under my belt before I left town. Maybe even more than just a kiss…
“So,” Ryan leaned into my ear, sending goosebumps over my skin. “What did you think of everyone? Think you can tolerate us for a night?”
“Hmm…” I pushed my lips together, leaning my chin on my hand. “I don’t know…” I draw out and he smiles. “Will Kelsey be there?” I asked, hoping I didn’t sound jealous.
“Uh…” He scratches the back of his neck, seeming nervous. “Yeah, probably.”
“Then I’m in.”
I’m sorry, what did I just say? Did I just agree to a group date with Ryan freaking Davis? I mean, what in the world did he see in me? These were all football jocks and preppy girls who loved pink. I’m the girl that likes to wear black and keep to myself.
His smile widens and he chuckles a bit. “You pleasantly surprise me, El.” He says.
I stand as the bell chimes. “I hope you surprise me, too, Ryan.” I say giving him my most flirtatious smile before turning and dumping my tray in the trash.
The next few hours fly by and I’m so busy thinking about Ryan that I had completely forgotten about Zak until he plops down next to me in art class. “So, you finally agreed to the date.” He said, amused. How did he even hear about that?
“Not a date.” I state, not looking up from the drawing I already had out and was working on. The tables were large, and I normally sat alone, but not today. Zak was so close that his leg kept tapping mine, despite there being plenty of room at the table for him. I couldn’t stand the tormenting feeling and tried to inch away which only seemed to entice him.
“It’s a date.” He counters.
I finally looked at him. “Are you jealous?” I was definitely flirting. I definitely didn’t care. All reason went out the window the moment I looked at those piercing blue eyes.
He was about to say something when the teacher came over to talk with him about the assignment, saving me from my awful flirting. I went back to my drawing and took this time to inch further away from him. The moment the teacher walked away his attention was back on me. He looks down at the drawing, giving a nod of approval.
“You’re really good.” He says. I look down at the drawing, taking it all in. It was just a landscape of the wide open road, but I suppose I did have a knack for drawing.
“Thanks.”
“What made you choose this landscape?”
I talk without thinking. “Because at the end of summer I will be on a road just like this going far away from here.”
And of course now I’ve piqued his interest. “You don’t like it here?”
“I...uh.. It’s complicated.” I stutter.
“Try me.” He challenges. Strangely, I wanted to tell him all of it. Every last detail of my life that led me to this decision. My father, my mother, my… ability.
“That is a story for another day.” I say, hoping he will take the hint.
“Already making future plans with me. That’s a good sign.” He says and I catch his smile out of the corner of my eye and my insides heat up. I wished I had worn my hair down to hide the red that has surely taken over my face.
He stays quiet for a while and moves his pencil delicately and skillfully over the paper in front of him. I didn’t dare peak, knowing it’d start the conversation again. This boy was dangerous, I knew that much. I also knew that, if given the opportunity, I’d drop Ryan in a heart beat for him.
The end of class neared and I put my notepad in my bag. I finally snuck a peak at his drawing and gasped. The detail was amazing, especially for only a short period of time. The girl staring back at me was beautiful, and slightly familiar. Half of her face was done, shaded and detailed. The other half had an outline of a wolf.
“That is… wow. I have no words.” He placed the picture into his bag delicately.
“I’m glad you like it.” I tilt my head at the way he says the words as he stands. He bends down to me. “It is you, afterall.”
My jaw dropped. That’s why she looked familiar. But there was a wildness to her features that didn’t really seem to suit me. Was that really how he saw me?
The bell chimed before I could come back with some witty comment. “Until tomorrow.” Zak says, his eyes taking me all in. “It was a pleasure to meet you, El.” He disappeared out of the door leaving me to finally try to catch my breath.
The feelings that grew in me for Zak in just the short while that I knew him scared me. I needed to stick to the plan and avoid him. I knew Ryan was a player, I’d seen him with several girls in the past, but this meant he wouldn't want a relationship. I was sure I wouldn’t fall for him even if I did have a short fling with him, and I’d still be able to leave at the end of the summer. But Zak…
With Zak, he would definitely make me want to stay, and I couldn’t let that happen. I needed to leave this town and everyone else in it. I was so engulfed in thought that I hadn’t realized I was already at the Diner. Lea greeted me as I walked in. She was an average size girl with platinum blonde hair that hung just above her shoulders in waves. She was the manager and as long as you stayed on her good side, she was very sweet.
I quickly changed in the bathroom and pushed all thoughts of boys from my mind as I started my shift. The restaurant wasn’t very busy, but I still made decent tips. The end of the day came quickly, fortunately, and I helped Lea with the closing chores before we made our way to the door.
I untied my apron, shoving it in my bag as Lea was locking up the door to the diner. “Goodnight, El!” She calls as she walks to her car. I wave back, waiting briefly to make sure she made it to her car alright. The sky was pitch black, and most businesses around were closed, giving the town an eerie feeling. Luckily I didn’t live too far from here.
Now was one of those moments where I really wished I had a car. I was so tired from the day and just wanted to crawl under the covers and sleep for twenty four hours. I dragged my feet in the direction of home, not sure I wanted to see what was waiting up for me.
I wondered what sort of mood he'd be in tonight. He’s been better the past few weeks. My father and I don’t get along any more. I know he blames me for mom’s death, I do too. But he’s determined to punish me for it.
Twenty minutes later, I’m at the door to the double wide trailer. I can hear the T.V. and hope that doesn’t mean he’s awake. I walk in, taking in the mess. I just cleaned yesterday and now there were empty beer cans on every surface in the small living room. I groan. So much for sleep.
I creep down the hallway, searching for signs of life. I open his door tentatively, and see him lying over the covers with his shoes still on. I was proud he at least made it to the room this time. I carefully close the door back and pop in my ear buds. I put my loudest music on and quickly picked up the house. By the time I was done cleaning and finished my homework it was one in the morning. I already loathed the idea of waking up in the morning. But at least I’d have something to look forward to.
Someone to look forward to.
ZakIt took everything in me to not follow her after school. I wanted to know where she lived, who she lived with, where she worked. I wanted to know everything about her to be able to better understand her. I parked my Explorer in front of the large building and walked inside the packhouse. My mother greeted me with a kiss on the cheek as she always did.“How was your first day of school?” She beamed, looking so excited to hear all about it. I didn’t understand why they insisted on me going, but they assured me it was for my own benefit and would help me when I took on the role as Alpha. I had hated the idea of school up until I saw her. Now I couldn’t wait to go back.“It was good. Not at all what I expected.” I said honestly, though I couldn’t tell my Mother about El. Not
I felt like I had only slept for five minutes before my alarm went off. I groaned, taping my phone to silence the noise. I almost fell back asleep when my door burst open. “Hey. I want breakfast.” Dad says with a toothbrush in his mouth. He wasn’t very old, but looked like it with his unruly hair and graying beard. I groan yet again, then lazily make my way into the kitchen. “What’ll be today?” I ask as he comes in, throwing on his work uniform. He was a mechanic at his friend Mike's auto shop. “Just make me some toast.” Please, I add in my mind. I quickly prepared the toast, seeing that I was already running late. Not to mention, I haven’t even showered. I slide his toast on the table without buttering it and quickly run to th
Once home, I change my clothes to jean shorts and one of my nicer black shirts. I decided to attempt to straighten my hair but the beast can never be tamed all the way. It still had a bit of curl left in it but overall, I was satisfied with the way I looked. I grabbed my small purse that I rarely used and headed for the door. I hadn't noticed my Dad arrive home and jumped at the sound of his voice. "Where the hell are you going?" He lounged on the couch and I saw the half empty pint of whiskey next to him. This wasn't a fight I wanted tonight. "I got called into work." I hoped he was too drunk to notice my clothes. “In that? Yeah, right. Don’t lie to me. You’re probably going to get high or fuck some guy. You’re just like your mother.” His tone was harsh but he never raised his voice. My hand tightene
I had arrived at school early that day, actually looking forward to seeing Ryan. I wore my hair down and straightened it again. I actually added just a touch of eye liner which was unusual for me. I didn’t want to seem desperate, but I also felt like I needed to be on Ryan’s level. There was no way I’d be wearing pink, but I could at least take some pride in my appearance.“I can see the date went well.” Zak smiles at me as he takes his seat next to me.I shrugged. “I may have had fun.”Zak chuckles, but it seems forced. Something seemed off about him. “Look at you. You’re practically glowing! Did he kiss you?”I turned to look at him, giving my most innocent look. “Maybe.”
The weekend came and went a little too fast for my liking. I lounged around most of the day Saturday and tried my best to avoid my Dad. Apart from him throwing his liquor bottle at me the other night, he had actually been pleasant. Well, as pleasant as he could be. On Sunday, I worked most of the day and was glad I got off earlier in the day so I could go to bed early and catch up on some sleep I desperately needed.I'd managed to push all thoughts of Zak from my mind by keeping myself busy or thinking of Ryan. I was still upset with Ryan over the events from Friday and I knew if I just stayed away from him, Kelsey would back off. Zak's words echoed through my mind. Is it worth it? Honestly, I didn't know Ryan well enough to answer that yet.By the time Monday came along, I decided it best to break things off with Ryan. I just needed to get
Over the next few days I grew worried. Zak didn’t show up on Tuesday and neither did Ryan. I figured with Ryan’s hand he might miss a day of school, but Zak didn’t seem too badly hurt. I was nervous he wouldn’t come back or that he was mad at me.On Wednesday, Ryan showed up, but didn’t say anything to me as he walked into class late. He glanced at me once before taking his seat and I couldn’t help but notice the cast around his hand. Exactly how hard did he hit Zak that he injured himself in the process? Now I was really worried because once again, Zak was nowhere to be found. I wondered if he was okay, or if Ryan did more damage than I originally thought. Zak was like a brick wall when Ryan hit him. He didn’t even seem fazed or act like it hurt.I made it through the day avoiding Ryan and then worked a shift at the Di
Friday was surprisingly uneventful, though I was thankful. Ryan told me he was taking me to dinner Saturday evening but it was a surprise where we were going. I really didn’t care for surprises, but it was Ryan. How bad could it be? When I sat with Ryan at lunch, Kelsey simply sat at another table, obviously not happy about seeing me with Ryan, but she kept her mouth shut for once.Zak didn’t comment once on Ryan and I, making good on his promise, until the very end of the day when we were waiting for the bell to ring. “Are you nervous about your date tomorrow?” He says with his eyes on the floor.“No, not really. Should I be?”He ignores my question. “You have my number if you need anything.”The bell chimes an
The next morning I left for work before my dad had gotten out of bed, making it easy to avoid him. I wasn’t sure how he would be after last night's events. I arrived at work and helped get ready for the afternoon rush. Being busy at work was a welcome distraction and helped keep my nerves at bay as I watched the time tick slowly by. As much as I wanted to see Zak, I just wasn’t sure it was a good idea. I kept telling myself to stay away from him but it was like there was some sort of invisible force pulling us together. As four o’clock approached I kept glancing at the door more often, hoping to see him walk in. When it passed four and he still wasn't here, I got worried. I continued to work while it was busy so I could still wait on him but it slowly died down and Lea insisted I leave. Twenty minutes had passed and I was convinced he wasn’t coming. Zak didn’t seem like
The next evening, Zak and I sat in the car outside of a bustling bar out in the middle of the woods. We had driven nearly half the day to get here. I sized up the building, noticing it looked run down and kind of small. Not at all where I pictured a Lycan King might hang out.“This is it?” I ask, scrunching up my nose.“Looks can be deceiving.” Zak chuckles softly before taking a more serious note. “You remember everything I told you?”“Yes sir.” I said, saluting him.“El…” He groans.“I remember Zak. Just trust me, okay?”Zak had gone over werewolf etiquette with me, explaining how to approach an Alpha
“It’s not possible. Alpha Killian has said multiple times he couldn’t father any children.” James says with a firm shake of the head.“Look at her, she looks just like him. Black hair, strong facial structure. It would explain why she doesn’t smell like a werewolf. She’s a Lycan.” Luke sits on the other side of me, making me more uncomfortable than I already was.“There hasn’t been a female Lycan in, what, seventy-five years?” Gabriel says.“As unlikely as this is, if she tries to confront him-” Damien inputs.“He will kill her.” Zak finishes, wiping a hand across his face. My heart picked up its pace as yet another person wanted me dead just for existing. “He won’t even
As we busted through the woods and into the clearing, I realized we had already made it back. It felt like only minutes had passed since we left. Several people were outside, trying to help with the commotion where they could, but it didn’t seem like anyone was fighting. I saw a few injured people, being helped inside by others and quickly pushed down the pull of my ability.Zak’s mother greeted us outside, holding a pair of clothes. I hopped off of Zak and watched with the same amount of amazement as he shifted back into a human. I wasn’t sure I would ever get used to it.“How bad is it?” He said, taking the clothes from his mother and hastily covering himself.“There’s several injured, but most are just superficial wounds.”
As if reading my thoughts he kissed me quickly, releasing me from my staring. “Don’t worry. I’ll be gentle.”I nodded, drawing in a deep breath as I felt him situate himself at my opening. Slowly he eased himself inside me, stretching me to the max. The pain wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, and I wondered if it was because my body healed itself. Whatever it was, I was grateful. He eased himself in and out a few times at an agonizingly slow pace, giving my body time to adjust. I could tell he was restraining himself, by the way his body shook with his calculated movements. The pain subsided quickly, leaving only slight pressure and an immense amount of pleasure. He rocked back into me, a little harder this time and I moaned in response to urge him to keep going. Seeing I had adjusted, he quickened his movements, letting out low moa
He molds his lips on mine and suddenly my body ignites, heating up with every passing moment. He grabs my waist, pulling me closer until I’m straddling his lap. Nothing could ever compare to the feeling of when I’m with Zak. Nothing could ever make me feel so complete, so whole. His tongue grazes my lips and I part them, granting him entrance. He explores every inch of my mouth causing a small moan to escape my lips. A growl comes from him and suddenly he flips us over without breaking the kiss, hovering on top of me as I lay on the warm rock. I arch my back, needing to be closer to him, to touch him.His lips move from mine, sucking and biting the soft skin of my neck. I could feel the ache between my legs grow the longer he touched me. His lips moved lower to the top of my breast. His eyes flicked up to mine for a moment as he breathed
I rested my forehead on the warm window, closing my eyes and letting the sun melt away my troubles. He wasn’t my dad. I kept thinking it over and over in my mind, our conversation replaying on a loop. You’d think that I would find some sort of joy in discovering I wasn’t related to him, but he was still the man that raised me. The man that was biologically my father was another matter altogether. Very briefly I pictured what life could have been like with a loving father and a mother that didn’t have to hide. I could see us standing in front of a brilliant white house with blue shutters complete with the white picket fence. The perfect family. But that wasn’t reality. Reality was that my real father terrified my mother so badly that she ran from him. Even went as far as to erase her and Liam’s past. What puzzled
“You’re not going to leave without me, are you?” A man calls, jogging up to us. I remembered Kai from the brief time at the party. His golden hair fell in his earth colored eyes and he had about the same build as Zak, maybe a little shorter. I couldn’t help but notice how much he looked like Gabriel and wondered if they were related.“Kai, right?” I held out my hand to shake his.“You would be correct, Miss Luna.” He grabbed my hand, kissing it instead and bared his neck, just as everyone else inside did. Zak let out a low animalistic growl, but Kai just looked amused.“It’s El.” I said, feeling just as uncomfortable by the gesture as I did inside.“Whatever you say, Miss Luna.” Kai said with a
The next morning Zak and I decided to go and talk with my Dad to see if we could pry any answers from him. I had a bad feeling growing in the pit of my stomach about going to see him, remembering how angry he was last time I saw him. "Let's grab some breakfast first and then we will head out, okay?" I nodded, fixing my hair into a bun. Zak had gotten me some fresh clothes from his mom. Just a simple tank top and shorts but I felt so much better in clean clothes. As we walked down the hall, Zak slipped his hand in mine. I frowned despite adoring the feeling of his hand in mine. "Are you sure this is okay?" I say, holding up our hands between us. The smile he gives removes any of my perturbing thoughts and he kisses me slowly, communicating his feelings through the gesture."It's more than okay. Everyone knows now, so there's no need to hide." He kisses my
“This human knows too much about us!” Luke shouts and I hear a few people in the crowd agree. He digs the knife deeper and I gasp, grabbing Luke’s arm in an attempt to pull him away. “She threatens the Alpha bloodline as she has mated to our young Alpha. With these facts, I sentence her to death.”“Drop the knife!” A deep voice booms as the double doors shake the walls they slam into. Luke hesitates, holding me in place. His hand shakes like he’s fighting against himself. The man enters, looking murderous. Zak looked just like him, from his hair to his jawline and facial structure. “Lucas, let the girl go. That is a command!”Luke jumps and releases me with a growl. I practically jump in Zak's arms and he scoops me up, holding me tight. James walks to us, not taking his eyes off of Luke the entir
