CHAPTER THIRTEEN The divorce papers were right in front of me. I had read them numerous times but could not bring myself to put my signature on any page that required it. I ran my hands through my hair and scratched at the scalp. It was not supposed to be this hard, especially considering everything Ashton had done to me. All I had to do was sign and give him the papers—of course, he had no idea that I had divorce papers ready.
I leaned back into the couch, lay my head on the back, and looked up at the high ceiling. Anything to get my mind off my failing marriage was interesting. I had promised Ridley that I would get this done with but a week had gone by and the papers remained in the top right drawer of the desk in my office. Ridley asked me about it on Friday morning and I managed to get away with an excuse of being busy and the divorce papers slipping my mind.
Saturday evening, and I still did not put my signature down in ink on the papers. I could not lie for being busy, I had spent the entire day at home doing absolutely nothing but lounging around the house with a cup of wine.
Another drag of air, the night seemed to move so slowly. I sat straight and looked to the door of the house when it opened and Ashton entered. Scrambling as quickly as I could, I grabbed the papers from the coffee table and folded them.
“What is that?” He asked and shifted his gaze from my face to the folded papers in my hand. He had consistently kept his façade of caring about me and our marriage, coming back home every night and trying to make conversation in the morning before work.
I shifted in my seat and tried to keep the papers from his line of sight. “Um…just some reports I’m supposed to read,” I replied and stood from the couch in an attempt to escape and go to the guest room that had now become my room- most of my things were now in that room.
“Janelle, wait…” Ashton called out cautiously and I turned around and nodded, ushering him to continue speaking. “Look, I know that I made a mistake but I’ve apologised and…well, you can’t ignore me forever.”
I wrapped my arms over my chest and raised an eyebrow. He shifted closer to me and dropped the jacket in his hands on the couch. “I love you, and I am terribly sorry. I want to make everything right between us. Please forgive me.” He pled.
If this apology had come months before or before the entire Ridley thing, I would have forgiven him, ran into his arms and kissed him. But this came after Ridley gave me stability, after the scene Ridley and I had caused at Stetson Hotel and after the multiple articles and buzz from the media about Ashton and I’s failed marriage. He came to apologise only after that, he had already hurt me and chosen Dorothy.
“Where have you been the entire day?” I asked him with a piercing gaze. “Dare lie to me and say you were not with that two-faced bitch?” I challenged and he looked to the floor. I scoffed and shook my head. “You don’t know what you want, you fucking bastard.”
I walked away from him and started walking up the stairs. “Listen, Janelle, please just listen to me!” He persisted from the foot of the staircase.
“I have been here for months, waiting for you and your explanation. And even now, I am willing to listen but your actions continue to contradict your words, Ashton.” I told him with a sad face.
I ignored his calls and constant pleading and went up to my room, the guest room that is. Everything Ashton shared with me, I questioned. Had the memories and moments we had shared all been a complete lie? On days just like today, a part of me painfully realised that Ashton did not truly love me. Perhaps he had loved me at a certain point but he no longer did. True to his mother’s words, I was only but a short phase.
The notification sound of my phone made me open my eyes and move to my bed from the door. Once I was seated by the edge of the bed, I opened my phone and clicked on the new text message from Ridley after setting the divorce papers on the bed.
‘Can we meet tomorrow? I need to speak with you.'
I looked at the message for a minute or more and sighed at the two ticks at the bottom. Did he know that I had not signed the papers yet nor given them to Ashton? I felt immense guilt towards Ridley, he was only helping me albeit for his selfish reasons, it was the most help I had received from anyone other than Ashton. Oh Ashton. He had carefully and sweetly given me a foundation and pillar to lean on and abruptly took that away.
‘You’re free, right?’
Another text from Ridley came once more and I responded with an ‘okay’ before tossing my phone on the bed, grabbing the wine bottle by my bedside and taking a seat on the balcony. The night air was cold and crispy, and it hit my exposed skin with the right amount of chill. My eyes closed after I took a sip from my glass and closed my eyes. I wished I could forget and be a whole new person. Even if I started my life anew, a part of me would always yearn for how perfect my life could have been with Ashton. He was the missing puzzle in my life— at least that was what I thought.
“Sweetheart! Janelle!” I heard my name and opened my eyes. A groan escaped my throat when I saw Ashton on the balcony of our- his room which was next to mine. “Please hear me out!”
I rubbed my temples and sat straight. The last thing I needed was such behaviour from Ashton, it only irritated me more and I could feel a headache coming on. I glared at him and stood from my seat before making my way back into the room, sliding the doors closed and the curtains as well before dropping on the bed. If he wished, he could scream to the entire world, I did not care.
When morning came, I rushed through my routine, wore a bit of makeup and let my hair down. Ashton was the first person I saw when I got down, he sat at the dining table in his casual clothes and offered up a smile at me that I did not return.
Florence walked out of the kitchen and greeted me. “What would you like for breakfast, ma’am?” She asked and I shook my head as a no.
“I’ll have my breakfast outside, thank you,” I told her and she went back into the kitchen.
“Where are you going?” Ashton spoke up and I turned to him.
“Somewhere where I won’t feel like I’m suffocating,” I answered bitterly before leaving.
Ridley had sent the location for another café and I drove there despite knowing that he would be late. The café had the same vibe as the last one, I took a seat by the window and a waitress came to my table.
“What would you like to have?” The waitress looked at me and gasped lightly. “Oh my god! You’re Janelle Stetson!” She exclaimed in a hushed tone.
I smiled up at her and waved. “Hi,” I greeted and her smile grew.
Since I had married Ashton, one could say I had gained fame in the city and probably to people who knew the Stetsons. I could only guess that the waitress was one of the women who were infatuated with the Stetson brothers, they both had quite a reputation in the city and I had married one of them, and that had gained some negative and positive reactions.
“Oh my god! I can’t believe my streak of luck, yesterday I saw Ridley Stetson and today it’s you.” She was so excited that it made me smile at her wider. She looked younger than me. “I must have fed hungry people in my past life,” She added and made me chuckle.
“I’m just a regular person,”
“Yeah right, and I’m Beyonce.” She rolled her eyes. “Is this place like a new celebrity hang-out place? Or it’s a Stetson thing?” She started to ask but was disturbed by the chair on the other side of the table being dragged and Ridley taking a sit. The waitress, Hannah, whose name I read on the name tag gasped, if not louder.
“Pinch me now!” She screeched but somehow only for us to hear.
Ridley looked at me and smiled. “Good morning, Jenny.” He teased knowing fully aware that I hated when people shortened my name. “Hello…” He looked at Hannah’s name tag. “…Hannah. You are quite the sight.” He smirked at her and his eyes moved from her face to chest.
Hannah blushed and avoided Ridley’s gaze. I scoffed as the last thing I expected to see today was Ridley’s flirting expertise. He looked over at me for a second with a smug look, as if saying, “I bet you don’t think I can seduce her”, and frankly speaking I did not doubt him. I had heard so much about his personality and how he was with women, he could easily seduce a random café waitress.
“What would you like to order?” Hannah stuttered out, I rolled my eyes.
“It’s okay love, you can come back in a couple of minutes,” Ridley spoke with a charming smile. She nodded and turned to me happily, confirming if I wanted the same and I nodded. She walked away and I turned to Ridley.
“You’re early,” I acknowledged and he nodded.
“My partner hates tardiness, I have to learn to fix that.” He replied with a shrug.
“What do you want to speak with me about?” I asked and my eyes went around the café. Ridley and I were not pop star famous but if anyone who knew of us saw us and took a picture, it would fuel the rumours and speculations made by the media.
“The divorce papers, have you signed them?” He asked and I remained silent in my seat and looked at the table. Ridley sighed and leaned forward. “Janelle, look at me.” I looked up and he shook his head.
“You can’t keep putting this off. Our plan can only be set in motion if you file for divorce.” He started.
“I know that,” I tried to interject but he shook his head once more.
“I don’t think you do, because if you do then those papers would have been signed by both parties and we would be in court by now.”
“This isn’t something easy for me, Ridley.”
“I know it isn’t but you can’t be so blinded by love, Janelle. The bastard continues to betray you while you let it slide. People who have been in longer relationships have gotten divorce easier…” He paused as though realisation had dawned on him. “Has Ashton already changed your mind just after merely a week?” He asked in an accusing tone.
I glared up at him. “Do you think I am that pathetic?”
“I do not know, you tell me, sister-in-law.” He replied coldly and I huffed.
“I am neither pathetic nor a pushover.”
“Then sign the damn papers.”
I closed my eyes for a second or two and then looked straight at him. “Ridley, you have never been married or shared a bond with anyone as I did with Ashton. Do not pressurize me, I will sign the papers.”
“What I want Janelle is an exact date,” He reiterated defiantly.
“I’ll sign the fucking papers today,” I told him in the heat of the moment and he smiled evilly.
“That is what I like to hear,” He put some papers on the table and moved them to me. “You can do it right now.” He removed a pen from his pockets and placed a pen on top of the papers.
I looked at him in disbelief and he gave me a challenging look. I pulled the papers close to me and grabbed the pen. The pressure Ridley was putting on me right now was unwelcome and I hated him for it but the more I thought about it, the more necessary it seemed. I opened the document and signed the papers.
“Yay!” Ridley exclaimed with a wide smile. “Give them to me, I actually have to make sure they get delivered to Ashton. I kinda don’t trust you with this.”
I scoffed but pushed the papers to him. He took the papers, smiled at me and called for a waitress.
“Finally ready to order?” Hannah asked with the same polite and excited smile.
“Yes, sweetheart. We are ready.” Ridley said enthusiastically.
CHAPTER FOURTEENAfter multiple meetings in the morning, I was stumped. All I wanted was a tall glass of juice and a soft bed to lie down. I could not get what I wished for yet, I had to go through a departmental meeting as well, at the least I was glad that it was the last for the day and all I had to worry about afterwards was paper work and emails.Lisa carried my files as we made our way to Ridley’s office which was close to mine anyways. Ridley’s office was huge and had a huge table on the left side of the room for smaller departmental meetings such as this. When Lisa and I entered, all the seats were almost taken up with only three seats remaining. Ridley’s assistant came over to me by the door and led the way to the seat next to Ridley. I took my seat and nodded to him, to which he gave a smile before looking at everyone.“Okay, everyone is here. Shall we begin?” He began enthusiastically.By the time the meeting ended, my body was sore and I kept rubbing the back of my neck. I
CHAPTER FIFTEENI probably forgot to mention that Maria was a very dramatic woman and that her son always hid behind her skirt. Ashton was like a young boy still under his mother’s protection, waiting for his mommy to speak for him. Even during the good times of our marriage, he did defend me, but sometimes I could see that he would rather pick his mother’s absurd point of view. Hence, I tried all I could to avoid bumping heads with her.Yet once more, here was Maria Stetson, hurling insults at me and tossing out my luggage while Ashton stood by the door with his hands in the pockets of his shorts. I moved toward my suitcase, which was lying on the ground with clothes pooling out of it. I watched Maria in disbelief as she walked out of the house once more with another suitcase and threw it to my feet.“Florence, bring this ratchet whore’s belongings and dump them here!” She yelled out and blew hair out of her face.“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked her as I looked at the pile
CHAPTER SIXTEEN“Ridley! I swear, I will barge into your room!” I continued to pace in front of his bedroom door while looking at my wristwatch. No response came and I could hear scrambling so that meant something was happening and he was not just ignoring me. We had a meeting with Ashton and his lawyer pertaining the divorce and even though I had reminded Ridley the day before, personally set his alarm and went as far as writing it on his hand, he had still woken up late. Now, here I was trying to hurry him up and we only had fifteen minutes to get there and the drive to the place we were going was not a short one. CHAPTER SEVENTEEN (2 YEARS AGO)Ashton and I had settled into a routine. He would pick me up from my apartment in the morning, and we would drive to work together, of course, I would enter the building before him much to his disdain, and once the day was over, he would drive me back home. I had grown even more comfortable around him, maybe a bit too cosy. I had not told him but over the last few days, I had grown smitten for him. His actions made me blush knowingly and unknowingly and I was frightened that if he had not caught on, other people had.No matter what feelings I was developing for Ashton Stetson, I had to ignore them and not act on them. His interaction with me was already taboo and I was so grateful for our friendship as it was, pursuing something more would ruin one of the only good things I had going in my life. Was I expected to ignore whatever was happening in front of me, only across the room? The perfectly shaped champagne flute wine glass in my hand felt heavy, the sparkling liquid in it tempted me and before I could account for it, I had downed more than four rounds. I wished I could ignore what was happening and turn the other way, act oblivious but I could feel the pitiful gazes of everyone in the room. They knew just like I did, and they pitied me.I motioned for one of the waiters to refill my glass and continued to burn holes into my husband’s perfectly ironed suit. Only but a year and a half ago, I was the one that stood beside him with his arm around my waist with the attention of all in attendance on me. If I spent another second staring at my husband’s arm around another woman, the glass in my hand would have shattered. I took a deep breath, placed the glass on a tray carried by one of the workers and walked out of the huge hall.I walked down the hallway until I found an empty
CHAPTER TWO (2 and a half years before)I was beginning to think my life was terribly unfortunate, I was a double orphan and had no one to rely on. Even my job was only contractual and could end on any day, the only person in my life that I could consider a friend was my roommate and even she did not seem too keen on having me as a friend. My only interactions with my roommate were silent greetings and simple and short questions. As for my workmates, they avoided me and only called on me when there was something to be done.Perhaps my last foster parents had been right and I should not have pursued a career in hotel management, I only ended up on the second floor of a huge company with a small desk in the corner of the room and my seniors forcing me to do their workload, not that I could reject. I was just a mere and unimportant employee while the hotel management knew them.I stretched my legs as far as I could under my cramped desk with files under it. This day had gone on longer th
CHAPTER THREE Ridley sat in my house a little too comfortable, as though he belonged which was crazy because for the period I had known him, he avoided his brother’s house like the plague but this was the second time her was here in only a week since the last time. I watched him silently as I stood by the archway that led to the kitchen. He was seated by the dining table with his leg crossed over the other and a glass of water in hand. It was terrible and mannerless of me to mention but he looked stunning, all those magazines and articles had failed to capture his true essence.“I admire a good stare but you’ve been staring for far too long, should I be convinced that you want me and not my brother?” His cocky voice brought me back to reality and I was reminded of the stupid narcissist he was.“And lead me towards more heartbreak? I’ll pass.” I answered before walking to the table and taking out a seat that was opposite him. “Why are you here?” I asked. He smiled his usual playful sm
CHAPTER FOURI groaned as I parked my car in the underground parking lot of Stetson headquarters and stayed planted in my seat for another five minutes trying to talk myself out of the absurdity I was about to do. I scratched at my scalp and moaned in regret. This was not bound to be a good idea, it was a rushed decision and I kept telling myself to put my car in drive and leave but somehow I could not bring myself to do so.The image of Maria entering my office and trying to put up the front that she was better than me kept playing in my mind and ending up like her seemed like the path that was laid out for me if I did not act quickly. Perhaps not even a trophy wife, I would probably only end up as the bitter forgotten wife with the rate at which Ashton was making public appearances with Dorothy. That was a fate I did not want for myself, to end up worse than Maria. My hand went to open the car door but I shook my head when I thought of who I was going to see. Sure, Ridley had put fo

CHAPTER TWELVE (2 YEARS AGO)My nervousness had reached an all-time high. Today would be my last day at Stetson Hotel if I was not offered a permanent job, and quite frankly the chances of that happening were zero to none. I had been unable to sleep and for the past week, I had been on the lookout for any listings of available jobs or cheaper apartments. Despite checking every single newspaper every morning and different pages on my phone, I had not seen any job that was particular to my expertise. Jobs were just that scarce, and the apartments were just as expensive.I buttoned my shirt all the way and folded the collar before wearing my pants. I only owned two pantsuits and the navy blue one I wore today was my lucky one- well it was the best one and so I attributed it only to good things. Maybe if I wore something cute and flashed my ass around, my name would magically appear on the list of permanently employed contract workers. When I walked out of my room, Lou was seated on the c
CHAPTER 11 Shockingly, Ashton was still in the house when it was morning. I found him at the dining table, picking at the food on his plate. It almost reminded me of the past, of what we had and how we would have breakfast together, and Ashton would stick to his sweet coffee that I still did not have a liking to. He looked natural except for his bouncing leg and nervous look. There was no need for him to be nervous or uncomfortable; after all, it was his house, too. I walked past him and straight to the kitchen because I had to leave Florence with a few instructions. His eyes followed my every movement, and I could feel them on me at the back of my head, like an irritating itch. "What?" I turned to him after telling Florence to move my things into the guest room. "You don't have to change rooms because of me," He said, but I shook my head. "Of course, I have to. You and I can't share a bedroom," I said instead and adjusted the sling of my purse over my shoulder. After grab
CHAPTER TENWhen Ridley proposed "letting loose," the first thing I thought of was a club and getting wasted. After all, he had already offered me a cup of wine. I was insistent on refusing and going back to work. He kept trying to get me to accept, but I was hellbent on going back to Stetson Hotel despite the backlash I expected to receive after what had happened. Multiple articles had already started appearing, and Ridley had shown me some of them. The last thing I expected was to end up in an ice skating rink. This was Ridley Stetson, the infamous bad boy, and Cassanova, an ice rink, was the last place I thought he would bring a person to as an idea of fun. I looked at him like he was an alien when he led me to get a pair of ice skates."Don't look at me like that. I skate all the time." He turned back to me before looking back at the person that was giving out the skates. "What's your size?" He turned to me again."Um, it's-""We have adjustable sizes, actually." The man behind the
CHAPTER NINE I took a seat on my new chair and breathed in. Ridley stood in front of my new huge glass and wooden table with a wide, triumphant smile. His smile was so infectious that I smiled back and stretched my arms, excited about what was to happen ahead. "So?..." He looked at me with huge eyes. "How do you like it? Is it okay?" He asked, and I nodded before turning in the swivel chair to look at the huge window on the left side of the room. Unlike my office back at the Waterfalls branch, this one had a larger window and a better view, even the furniture was better. Lisa had also done a good job sorting my things and preparing the office just the way I liked. After working with me for only a few months, she kind of knew my likes and dislikes better than my husband."It's perfect. Almost feels like a promotion." I replied and turned to face him."Of course, it's a promotion. Not just anyone gets an office right next to Ridley Stetson." Cockily, he ran his hands through his hair
