CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I probably forgot to mention that Maria was a very dramatic woman and that her son always hid behind her skirt. Ashton was like a young boy still under his mother’s protection, waiting for his mommy to speak for him. Even during the good times of our marriage, he did defend me, but sometimes I could see that he would rather pick his mother’s absurd point of view. Hence, I tried all I could to avoid bumping heads with her.

Yet once more, here was Maria Stetson, hurling insults at me and tossing out my luggage while Ashton stood by the door with his hands in the pockets of his shorts. I moved toward my suitcase, which was lying on the ground with clothes pooling out of it. I watched Maria in disbelief as she walked out of the house once more with another suitcase and threw it to my feet.

“Florence, bring this ratchet whore’s belongings and dump them here!” She yelled out and blew hair out of her face.

“What do you think you’re doing?” I asked her as I looked at the pile of clothes and looked up at her. “This is my house as much as it is Ashton’s.”

“You’re just a thieving wanton that managed to trick my poor innocent son.”

I laughed. “Innocent? Your son is far from innocent, as a woman you should be wiser and admit that you raised a coward and cheater. Your son spat on our marriage.”

“So what? He saw your worth and decided to move to someone befitting. You could never be enough, not in a million years. Your kind is supposed to be serving at his feet, not beside him.” She pointed her finger at me and threw her insults effortlessly at me, and I knew that she had wanted to do that for a long time.

“Maria, do you honestly think I’ll just let you chase me out of my house?” I tilted my head when she nodded and looked over to her silent son. “You are so pathetic, I wish I had seen this earlier before I married you.”

Florence walks out of the house with more of my things and sets them where the rest of my belongings are on the ground. She looks up at me and gives me her signature pitiful look. The urge to slap that look off her face was overwhelming but I simply clenched my hands.

“Move out of the way and let me enter my house,” I told Maria seriously. “You don’t want me to involve the police.”

“Try your best, you think the police in this city will dare go against a Stetson?” She mockingly mused and I rolled my eyes.

“This is so unnecessary and ridiculous.”

“You better get your trash and leave right now. You won’t get anything else from my son other than a divorce.” Ashton’s mother spoke once more and I ignored her, bent down to properly pack my things and stood straight after I was done.

“You are terribly wrong.” I turn my stare to Ashton. “I’ll see you in court and you best believe I am not walking out with scraps.” I dragged my suitcases to my car and was about to put them in the car when Maria spoke once more.

“Why are you getting the car?”

“Um…actually Mom, she bought that car with her own money,” Ashton spoke up for the first time and his mother looked back at him before looking back at me. at least her face showed a bit of shame.

Silently, I rounded my car and got into the driver’s seat after putting my bags. I had no energy to entertain Maria, and if she wanted me out of the house I would let her feel like she won for now. It hurt to leave the house that I had considered my home, and that too without putting up much of a fight but my annoyance with the situation was slowly growing, and after my day at work, I wanted nothing more than to rest.

I hated the fact that I had to find a place to stay, especially since I knew that Ashton would not even spend the night at the house but go to Dorothy’s apartment. Maybe this was for the best, I could live somewhere else during the divorce.

My first thought was Stetson Hotel but that did not seem favourable the more I thought of it. My only other option was to find an apartment but I was not going to find one so late at night. I opted to do the second option, calling Ridley. After calling him three times, I was about to give up when he answered the fourth call.

“You just saw me an hour ago. Do you miss me already?” His obnoxious voice sounded through the speakers of my car and I rolled my eyes, something I had been doing often over the last few weeks.

“I wish I was calling for something as nonsensical as that as well,” I sighed before swerving past another car. “I need an apartment, like right now,” I told him, trying to relay the urgency.

“It’s pretty late to be apartment hunting, don’t you think?”

“I know that, you idiot. Maria chased me out of the house and I was not in the mood to argue with her and her idiotic son.”

The other end of the line was silent for a few seconds before Ridley spoke once more. “Let me check with a few contacts, but this is kind of short notice, Janelle. I don’t think we’ll be able to find anything.”

“Hey, you convinced me to do this, you better find me a place to stay.” I countered and slowed down when I realised that I was rushing to nowhere.

“Okay, why don’t you just stay at my place while I look for a new place for you.”

I hesitated and thought of the complications of living with Ridley. “Er…I’m not so sure, Rid—”

He cut me off. “Don’t think too much about it. My place is huge and it’ll be like I’m not there and besides its only for two or three days until I find a new place for you.” He persuaded. I thought of the other options I had, which were nothing and sighed.

“Okay, send your address.”

“Sent,” He responded after a few seconds and the ding of a new text message confirmed it. I quickly put in the address and turned the car when I realised that to get to his place, I had to turn at one of the intersections I passed.

“I’ll be there soon. You better not have a woman in there.”

“Ew Janie, I don’t shit where I eat.”

I withheld from voicing how I truly felt about his response and cut the call. Ridley’s apartment was close to Stetson Hotel, not a walking distance kind of close but close enough. The building stood tall, and its extravagance inside definitely suited Ridley. I asked the doorman where Ridley’s apartment was because he was the first person I saw, and the reception was empty.

“I’m sorry ma’am, Mr Stetson has strict orders about people going up.” He replied quickly like he had done this before numerous times.

“Oh no, I’m his sister-in-law.”

He looked at me and did not look the tiniest bit convinced. “Ma’am, you can’t go up, even if you’re his grandmother.” He quipped sarcastically and I glared at him.

The universe surely got a rise from frustrating me. I got my phone from my purse and called Ridley; I was in no mood to tolerate his rude doorman. He answered on the third ring and I explained what was going on before putting him on loudspeaker.

“Thomas, you can let her up. She is my sister-in-law.”

Thomas, the doorman listened intently before looking up at me. “Sure sir.” He replied instantly and bowed at me. “I am sorry, ma’am. I was just following orders.”

I rolled my eyes and gave him the keys to my car. “You did not have to be sarcastic to follow orders. Bring the bags in the car up.” I was about to sidestep him and get on the elevator when I remembered that he had not told me the number of the apartment.

“What is the number of the apartment?” I turn back to him.

“It’s the penthouse.” He replies and I nod.

When I got to the highest floor, I walked down the modernly decorated hallway and rang the bell to Ridley’s penthouse. He opened the door a few seconds later, still wearing a suit except his dress shirt was no longer tucked in, the tie was missing and he had on some house shoes. He smiled at me and went in for a hug and I pushed him away.

“You’re an estranged daughter-in-law, you need the hug.”

“Keep your hands to yourself, Stetson.” I pushed him out of the way and entered the apartment.

It was beautiful, and luxurious, not that I expected any less from Ridley or any other Stetson. I had lived in this world for more than two years and I still could not grasp the beauty of being rich and living in spaces that looked like pictures off P*******t. The expanse of the room was mostly decorated in black and the furniture was varnished wood and leather. I looked up at the huge flatscreen TV, it just screamed ‘Ridley’ as well.

“Nice, right?” He asked proudly beside me and I nodded before I spotted his suit jacket lying on the floor next to the large couch and shook my head. I had imagined that he was messy, maybe I was right and this was the tell-tale sign to bolt for it.

“My room?” I asked him and he nodded before instructing me to follow him. He inadvertently started giving me a tour around the entire place, showed me the kitchen, study, the pool among other rooms before he stopped in front of the door and said it was my room.

It was like any guest room, plain and desolate of any personalized things but it was big and the bathroom was lovely. I looked back at him after checking out the entire room. “This will do.”

He smiled. “How exciting, the last time I had a roommate was at university. We are going to have so much fun! Did I show you the wine cellar?” He started rumbling excitedly and I wondered if he came with an off button.  Thankfully, the sound of the doorbell put an end to his excited banter.

“That must be my luggage,”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN“Ridley! I swear, I will barge into your room!” I continued to pace in front of his bedroom door while looking at my wristwatch. No response came and I could hear scrambling so that meant something was happening and he was not just ignoring me. We had a meeting with Ashton and his lawyer pertaining the divorce and even though I had reminded Ridley the day before, personally set his alarm and went as far as writing it on his hand, he had still woken up late. Now, here I was trying to hurry him up and we only had fifteen minutes to get there and the drive to the place we were going was not a short one. He would pick me up from my apartment in the morning, and we would drive to work together, of course, I would enter the building before him much to his disdain, and once the day was over, he would drive me back home. I had grown even more comfortable around him, maybe a bit too cosy. I had not told him but over the last few days, I had grown smitten for him. His actions made me blush knowingly and unknowingly and I was frightened that if he had not caught on, other people had.No matter what feelings I was developing for Ashton Stetson, I had to ignore them and not act on them. His interaction with me was already taboo and I was so grateful for our friendship as it was, pursuing something more would ruin one of the only good things I had going in my life. Was I expected to ignore whatever was happening in front of me, only across the room? The perfectly shaped champagne flute wine glass in my hand felt heavy, the sparkling liquid in it tempted me and before I could account for it, I had downed more than four rounds. I wished I could ignore what was happening and turn the other way, act oblivious but I could feel the pitiful gazes of everyone in the room. They knew just like I did, and they pitied me.I motioned for one of the waiters to refill my glass and continued to burn holes into my husband’s perfectly ironed suit. Only but a year and a half ago, I was the one that stood beside him with his arm around my waist with the attention of all in attendance on me. If I spent another second staring at my husband’s arm around another woman, the glass in my hand would have shattered. I took a deep breath, placed the glass on a tray carried by one of the workers and walked out of the huge hall.I walked down the hallway until I found an empty

CHAPTER TWO (2 and a half years before)I was beginning to think my life was terribly unfortunate, I was a double orphan and had no one to rely on. Even my job was only contractual and could end on any day, the only person in my life that I could consider a friend was my roommate and even she did not seem too keen on having me as a friend. My only interactions with my roommate were silent greetings and simple and short questions. As for my workmates, they avoided me and only called on me when there was something to be done.Perhaps my last foster parents had been right and I should not have pursued a career in hotel management, I only ended up on the second floor of a huge company with a small desk in the corner of the room and my seniors forcing me to do their workload, not that I could reject. I was just a mere and unimportant employee while the hotel management knew them.I stretched my legs as far as I could under my cramped desk with files under it. This day had gone on longer th

CHAPTER THREE Ridley sat in my house a little too comfortable, as though he belonged which was crazy because for the period I had known him, he avoided his brother’s house like the plague but this was the second time her was here in only a week since the last time. I watched him silently as I stood by the archway that led to the kitchen. He was seated by the dining table with his leg crossed over the other and a glass of water in hand. It was terrible and mannerless of me to mention but he looked stunning, all those magazines and articles had failed to capture his true essence.“I admire a good stare but you’ve been staring for far too long, should I be convinced that you want me and not my brother?” His cocky voice brought me back to reality and I was reminded of the stupid narcissist he was.“And lead me towards more heartbreak? I’ll pass.” I answered before walking to the table and taking out a seat that was opposite him. “Why are you here?” I asked. He smiled his usual playful sm

CHAPTER FOURI groaned as I parked my car in the underground parking lot of Stetson headquarters and stayed planted in my seat for another five minutes trying to talk myself out of the absurdity I was about to do. I scratched at my scalp and moaned in regret. This was not bound to be a good idea, it was a rushed decision and I kept telling myself to put my car in drive and leave but somehow I could not bring myself to do so.The image of Maria entering my office and trying to put up the front that she was better than me kept playing in my mind and ending up like her seemed like the path that was laid out for me if I did not act quickly. Perhaps not even a trophy wife, I would probably only end up as the bitter forgotten wife with the rate at which Ashton was making public appearances with Dorothy. That was a fate I did not want for myself, to end up worse than Maria. My hand went to open the car door but I shook my head when I thought of who I was going to see. Sure, Ridley had put fo

CHAPTER FIVE (2 and a half years ago)My hands moved animatedly as I clapped for yet another undeserving employee of the month for our department. Yet again, it was another female with a blessed bosom and a face that deserved to be on an advert for the hotel, not behind one of the managerial desks. The employee of the month, Margaret was a beautiful woman that was rumoured to be in a secret relationship with one of the directors. I was not one for workplace gossip as most of my colleagues shunned me anyway but it was pretty clear that Margaret was letting one of the higher-ups have their way with her.Margaret smiled brightly and tried to put up a fake front as the bouquet of flowers was being handed to her, but it was pretty clear that this was not a surprise to her. I was not self-righteous or entitled but I believed I deserved the title of ‘employee of the month’ more than her—perhaps even employee of the year. I could not get what I wished for yet, I had to go through a departmental meeting as well, at the least I was glad that it was the last for the day and all I had to worry about afterwards was paper work and emails.Lisa carried my files as we made our way to Ridley’s office which was close to mine anyways. Ridley’s office was huge and had a huge table on the left side of the room for smaller departmental meetings such as this. When Lisa and I entered, all the seats were almost taken up with only three seats remaining. Ridley’s assistant came over to me by the door and led the way to the seat next to Ridley. CHAPTER TWELVE (2 YEARS AGO)My nervousness had reached an all-time high. Today would be my last day at Stetson Hotel if I was not offered a permanent job, and quite frankly the chances of that happening were zero to none. I had been unable to sleep and for the past week, I had been on the lookout for any listings of available jobs or cheaper apartments. Despite checking every single newspaper every morning and different pages on my phone, I had not seen any job that was particular to my expertise. Jobs were just that scarce, and the apartments were just as expensive.I buttoned my shirt all the way and folded the collar before wearing my pants. I only owned two pantsuits and the navy blue one I wore today was my lucky one- well it was the best one and so I attributed it only to good things. Maybe if I wore something cute and flashed my ass around, my name would magically appear on the list of permanently employed contract workers. When I walked out of my room, Lou was seated on the c

CHAPTER 11 Shockingly, Ashton was still in the house when it was morning. I found him at the dining table, picking at the food on his plate. It almost reminded me of the past, of what we had and how we would have breakfast together, and Ashton would stick to his sweet coffee that I still did not have a liking to. He looked natural except for his bouncing leg and nervous look. There was no need for him to be nervous or uncomfortable; after all, it was his house, too. I walked past him and straight to the kitchen because I had to leave Florence with a few instructions. His eyes followed my every movement, and I could feel them on me at the back of my head, like an irritating itch. "What?" I turned to him after telling Florence to move my things into the guest room. "You don't have to change rooms because of me," He said, but I shook my head. "Of course, I have to. You and I can't share a bedroom," I said instead and adjusted the sling of my purse over my shoulder. After grab

CHAPTER TENWhen Ridley proposed "letting loose," the first thing I thought of was a club and getting wasted. After all, he had already offered me a cup of wine. I was insistent on refusing and going back to work. He kept trying to get me to accept, but I was hellbent on going back to Stetson Hotel despite the backlash I expected to receive after what had happened. Multiple articles had already started appearing, and Ridley had shown me some of them. The last thing I expected was to end up in an ice skating rink. This was Ridley Stetson, the infamous bad boy, and Cassanova, an ice rink, was the last place I thought he would bring a person to as an idea of fun. I looked at him like he was an alien when he led me to get a pair of ice skates."Don't look at me like that. I skate all the time." His smile was so infectious that I smiled back and stretched my arms, excited about what was to happen ahead. "So?..." He looked at me with huge eyes. "How do you like it? Is it okay?" He asked, and I nodded before turning in the swivel chair to look at the huge window on the left side of the room. Unlike my office back at the Waterfalls branch, this one had a larger window and a better view, even the furniture was better. Lisa had also done a good job sorting my things and preparing the office just the way I liked. After working with me for only a few months, she kind of knew my likes and dislikes better than my husband."It's perfect. Almost feels like a promotion." I replied and turned to face him."Of course, it's a promotion. Not just anyone gets an office right next to Ridley Stetson." Cockily, he ran his hands through his hair
