Rain battered the windows of the penthouse and thunder rumbled far out. Magnus yawned and instinctively pulled Sunny tighter against his body to keep her close to his heart…

He opened one eye and glanced around for the clock. It was five in the morning. Way too early for most people but not for him. He was used to getting up by six every morning so falling back to sleep wasn’t going to happen.

Magnus kissed her again and set her back on her feet. Sunny grinned and nodded. He was right. She’d been through enough shit in her life. She was walking arm in arm with a man she loved without a care in the world. Laughing, Sunny dragged him faster through the crowd to the rides and told him she hoped he didn’t get sick. Three hours later, Sunny carried two small stuffed bears, had her face half-painted like a fairy, and was eating the rest of a Walnoli, a walnut-shaped, cream-filled pastry, while Magnus laughed, dusting powdered sugar from her nose.“You’re going to ruin your glitter, little fairy,” he teased. By mid-morning, Sunny knew Magnus was suspicious that she was up to something, and despite her best acting abilities, she couldn’t muster enough fake happiness to make him think otherwise. He didn’t outright ask her, which was the worst part. Instead, Magnus was quiet, barely smiling when she talked to him or when she asked what they were going to do for the day. He told her he had some paperwork to catch up on and spread his work out on the dining table.“I really need to take care of this,” Magnus said. “So, I’m afraid I won’t be able to keep you much company until dinner. I’m sure you won’t mind.” His tone was so cold, that she almost lost it, but Sunny caught herself at the last second and shook her head brightly.“Of course not. I’ll just play ‘Halo 3’ all by my lonesome self,” she teased. But Magnus barely glanced at her. Sunny looked at the outfits lying on the bed. Both seemed pretty elegant for a dinner with her fake in-laws. Normally, she wouldn’t care that much but the guests were Tora and Harald and she wanted to impress them.“One last time… Tomorrow, the fairytale will be over…” She was feeling so nervous… Like never before. There were so many things going on in her mind right now. The debt, Alec’s situation, the fact that her mother disappeared from the face of the Earth. “What? Magnus, please, calm down,” Sunny begged, but the hatred in his eyes froze her words in her mouth.“No! No, I won’t! You know why? Here’s why. I fell in love with all my soul with this woman for real!” he yelled, standing from the table to glare at her. “But you want to know the irony of the situation? All through the night, Sunny tossed and turned, trying not to cry, trying not to think of Magnus, trying to forget what happened that evening, in his penthouse, the way he humiliated her in front of his parents. After she returned to her little apartment, the moment she closed the door behind her, Sunny took off the clothes and shoes she chose to wear for the dinner and threw everything into the trash bin. She didn’t want to see them or wear them ever again. She took a quick shower and got in bed, determined to get some sleep.“Don’t you dare cry now!” she scolded herself. “Don’t you fucking dare! You’ll do it later. Right now, Alec needs you!” Nonetheless, there was no sleep to be found. Neither said a word until they were far away from the bar and Sunny’s knees gave out completely. She leaned her back against a wall, but her strength was inexistent and she slowly slid down, finishing on the pavement.“This is not even my fault…” she murmured and started to cry silently. “So, why am I being punished?” After passing his fingers through his black hair, Alec threw out a frustrated sigh and sat down on the pavement next to her. He put his head on her shoulder, ignoring the curious stares of people passing them by. Sunny covered her face with her hands and they stayed like this, in silence, for a few long minutes. At one point, Alec put his arm around her shoulder and Sunny stopped crying.“Schatz, thanks for getting me out of there… No one has ever done something like this for me.
