Max is a no-nonsense bounty hunter. She doesn’t have time for silly fairytale nonsense like what her last “skip” was spouting about vampires. Yet days later, when things start to add up, she can’t help but question if maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t as crazy as she thought. Max’s questions, however, have placed her on the radar of a powerful vampire corporation that sends one of their best to seek her out and silence her if needed. What should have been an easy job for Jace and his werewolf friend Lukas is anything but. What happens when a vampire and werewolf fall for the same girl? Can their friendship withstand it, or will it cause a rift once romantic feelings and jealousy rear their heads? On the other hand, can Max survive having her eyes opened to the reality of the supernatural?

Chapter 1

Prologue

Thirty years ago

Lady Ravenwood lay in bed, her body wracked with pain from labour. The sky was dark, devoid of even a sliver of moonlight. She gazed up at the heavens and prayed that her child would not be born on this ominous night. She felt a sense of foreboding, especially given the current happenings. She could feel her child struggling to be born, but she clenched her lower body to prevent it.

She called out for her servant maid, Agatha, and asked if her husband had returned.

Agatha came over to the bed and changed the soiled sheet under her mistress. “No, My Lady, he has not yet returned. I’ll ask William when he comes up. The master should be back soon. Please hold on.”

Lady Ravenwood sighed and squeezed the sheets with all her might. Her toes curled from the pain, and sweat dripped down her neck and back, soaking the bed sheets.

Lady Ravenwood was hiding in a safe house outside the city limits. It was a small country house, far from prying eyes. Her husband had spared no expense in ensuring her comfort and protection, especially after they learned of their child’s impending arrival. But still, Lady Ravenwood couldn’t shake the feeling that something terrible would happen.

“Please, can you bring me some water?” Lady Ravenwood asked Agatha, her voice strained.

The maid bowed and hurried out of the room to fetch a glass for her mistress. As she descended the stairs, she saw William, the master’s butler, talking to a stranger. When William noticed her, he dismissed the man and led the maid into the dimly lit kitchen.

“The master hasn’t yet returned, and there have been sightings of hunters. He should have been back by now! How is the lady faring?”

Agatha expressed her concern with a shake of her head and knotted her fingers together. “She’s losing too much blood and refuses to give birth without her husband. If this continues, we may lose them both!”

William nodded thoughtfully and let go of the maid’s arm. “Keep her comfortable so long as it’s safe, but I fear we cannot delay much longer. The master has given us specific instructions if he doesn’t return.”

The maid tilted her head and rushed to get her mistress water. She then climbed up the stairs and carefully placed the glass in the lady’s trembling hands. Lady Ravenwood had paled considerably since the night began. Her brown hair was plastered over her forehead, and deep shadows made her eyes sunken. It was a terrible sight, especially for those who knew how beautiful the mistress was in good health. Her dress was stained with blood, and she was sweating profusely despite the cold temperature of the room. Agatha had done everything she could to assist her, but the lady’s condition seemed to be deteriorating by the minute.

Agatha moved her lady’s legs and changed the towels again. The blood kept dripping down, and she could see how weak she had become.

“Mistress,” Agatha said gravely. “We cannot wait any longer. You need to push! If you don’t, your baby will die.”

Lady Ravenwood inhaled sharply as another burst of pain erupted in her lower back. She had stayed the pains of childbirth for as long as she could, but she knew Agatha was right. As much as she didn’t want her child to be born that night, she also didn’t want to be the cause of their death. With a resigned sigh, she nodded and extended her hand, and the maid took it quickly, caressing it gently as the lady pushed. She cried out and sank onto the bed once the contraction had passed.

A gush of water and blood accumulated under her, and she pushed again when she felt another sharp stab of pain. Agatha went between her legs and cupped the baby’s crowning head. “One last push, My Lady. I’ll be able to pull the baby out after that.”

Lady Ravenwood howled and screamed as she contracted her belly muscles and pushed the child out.

The room was eerily quiet as the maid cleaned and wrapped the newborn baby girl in a soft blanket. That silence would have created anxiety for any other new mother, but not here, not with this most particular child. Agatha smiled comfortingly at Lady Ravenwood, who was too weak to hold her child. She placed the baby onto Lady Ravenwood’s breasts so she could gaze upon her child and feel their warmth.

Lady Ravenwood’s face was pale and drawn. “I don’t think I’ll make it,” she said weakly. “If Eddy’s dead, and I won’t be here to protect her, you must keep her safe. Please ask William to bring the documents. I must sign them before I can no longer do so.”

Agatha bowed her head, acknowledging her mistress’s request. She left the baby close to Lady Ravenwood and hurried down the stairs to find the master’s butler.

William was talking with another man when Agatha interrupted them. “The child lives, and the lady has requested you, William,” she said. “It doesn’t look good. Can you bring the documents? I think Lady Ravenwood will need to make a few changes.”

“I have bad news as well,” said William. “Hunters have killed the master. I don’t know how they knew his whereabouts, but someone tipped them off. His car was ambushed when he was on his way back.”

William moved to the main parlour and opened a trapdoor on the floor. Inside, there was a safe that contained the documents Lady Ravenwood requested. The papers were the deed to the Ravenwood’s wealth and were of great importance to the future Lady Ravenwood.

The butler closed the trapdoor and hurried Agatha to their mistress’s bedroom. When they both entered, all was silent, and they half feared their Lady had died. But then, they heard her weak voice. “Thank you, William,” she said. “Please bring the documents to me. I must sign them before it’s too late.”

The new mother slowly removed her ring and gave it to him. As she handed over the ring, the maid who was standing nearby observed her mistress’s face and realized that something was wrong. Her lips had turned an ominous shade of purple-blue, and her breathing was laboured. The maid’s heart skipped a beat, wondering if Lady Ravenwood would be strong enough to make it through the early morning.

“Her name is Maxime Seraphine Ravenwood. After my passing, she’ll be the heiress to the Ravenwood title and wealth,” Lady Ravenwood explained.

The butler took out a quill and inkwell and scribbled down the information on the parchments. He was careful not to make any mistakes, knowing how important and delicate the matter was. Once he finished writing, William turned to the lady and gently pricked her finger. The lady winced in pain but held her composure. He then did the same to the baby, who let out a small cry—the first since her birth. William collected their droplets of blood, one by one, and carefully placed them on the document. With each drop, the ink changed colour slightly, indicating that the blood was absorbed into the document and sealed the information within.

He then carefully folded the parchments and affixed the Ravenwood crest using the Lady’s ring.

“It’s done, Mistress. What is to become of the child?”

Lady Ravenwood gazed at her newborn baby with a mix of emotions. Her lips trembled with sadness as she spoke, “We must hide her until she’s ready to face the world. It’s best if she grows up not knowing anything about her true nature. She’ll be safe but alone. This decision pains me more than I can express, but it’s necessary. She can pass as a human, and we must protect her. I wish things could be different, but they’re not. Will you watch over her, William? Agatha? Please ensure that no one discovers she’s a half-blood.”

William took Lady Ravenwood’s hand and vowed to watch the little girl closely. After all, she was now his mistress, and he would do everything he could to protect her.

Blood and oath bound him and Agatha to be the child’s humble servants until the day someone put a stake through their vampire hearts.

Enjoyed the read. A remarkable heroine, with a mysterious heritage and a story with just enough plot twists to keep things interesting. This author has awesome character development. Grammar is solid which means a lot to me, I hate when poor grammar makes the story less immersive. Read all her work!

Chapter 1 - The ''skip''
I leisurely flipped the corner of the page of the book I read quietly on the small café’s exterior terrace. The last rays of the sun shone brightly on what was a perfectly normal day for me. I had ordered my usual—a strong cup of coffee and a croissant. I came to this particular café every day for the last month, and the server didn’t even have to ask me what I wanted since I always got the same thing. Hence, the usual.I was lost in my book when the young man brought my coffee with a smile and quickly dashed to another table to take a customer’s order. Without taking my eyes off the book, I searched for the handle of my mug, and when I found it, I brought the cup to my lips and sipped on the delicious hot liquid. I hummed in delight, then set it back on the table and raised my eyes to survey the terrace. I was technically on duty, waiting for my target to arrive. The sun was setting, and I didn’t want to stay here longer than necessary. I checked my watch and encouraged myself to give

Chapter 2 - Strange encounter
I greeted them with a slight seriousness, “Good evening, gentlemen. The clubs are a little further down on Main Street. I’m sure they’ll notice if all their bouncers took their breaks at the same time.” Trying to lighten the mood, I chuckled to myself as the song “I Wear My Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart popped into my mind.I turned to open my car door, but the man behind me pressed his hand on my car’s side, preventing me from following through with my action. Irritated, I turned to face him as he spoke, “We’re here for Umbridge,” his voice calm but menacing.I froze, unsure of what to do. The bouncer-type men could be competition. Mike was worth a substantial amount, and I got to him first, so I wasn’t inclined to give him up to them. I weighed my options, trying to decide what my next move should be.I could see Mike’s once beautiful face through the window. His hair was a mess from my tackle, and he still had specks of gravel stuck on the blood-crusted scratches on his cheek.

Chapter 3 - A curious woman
Jace POVI received a message that I had to attend an urgent meeting on the president’s floor. I picked up my pace, but I made sure to hold my head high so as not to appear panicked or rushed. I didn’t want to wrinkle my suit or attract any attention from the hard-working staff on my floor. We rarely got called into impromptu meetings, so I knew it must be serious. When I arrived at the boardroom, most directors were already there, waiting patiently for the man who had called the session. I sat near the room's far end and waited for the hostess to bring me something to drink. She appeared quickly but didn’t look me in the eye as she handed me a glass of red liquid. I sipped it slowly, relishing the taste and the opportunity to calm my nerves. The room was eerily silent, and I could sense everyone was on edge. No one understood why we had been called to this impromptu conference. The boardroom was spacious and could comfortably hold all twenty Harrington and Leigh Corporation directors.

Chapter 4 - The boxing ring
After another unsuccessful surveillance mission, I returned to my apartment feeling disheartened and frustrated. Moe had assigned me a new target, but after searching the man’s usual hideouts for hours, he was nowhere to be found. I had hoped to catch him off guard, but he evaded me this time. Before proceeding to the skip’s home, I always liked to check less conspicuous places to increase my chances of success. I learned from experience that if I went straight to their house, they would become suspicious and might disappear for days or even weeks. I saved that as a last resort and preferred to catch them in public when they least expected it. Being a girl bounty hunter had advantages, and people often underestimated me, which worked to my benefit. After locking my apartment door behind me, I trailed my fingers along the wall until I found the light switch. “Honey, I’m home!” I called out humorously into the space, trying to lighten my mood. I lived alone in a small bachelor pad where

Chapter 5 - Messy meeting
I arrived at Moe’s shop early in the morning, just as Bea unlocked the door to let me in. She greeted me with a broad smile and held the door open for me as I stepped inside. As suspected, last night’s sparring with Lukas made my ribs and arms sore. But I loved it. I hadn’t had a good training in months. Luckily, Moe’s opened around 9 AM, giving me enough time to sleep after my hard night of training at Sal’s.“Want a cup of coffee, Hon?” Bea asked me cheerfully.“Sure, you know how I like it,” I replied, winking at her.Bea had always been thoughtful enough to prepare the coffee machine the day before, so all she had to do was press start in the morning, and coffee would come flowing down. I waited patiently for Bea’s return on the chair in front of her desk, and when she did, she handed me my drink and sat down at her computer, typing away.“Where’s Moe?” I asked, sipping my coffee.“Oh, you know how it is with this rainy weather. His leg hurts, and—”“And the shrapnel makes it even

Chapter 6 - Coffee date
I finished my shower and wrapped a soft, fluffy towel around my head, soaking up the remaining droplets of water from my hair. After that, I used another towel to pat myself dry.My plans for the day involved meeting Lukas at a quaint café in the heart of downtown. I didn’t know much about Lukas other than the fact he was a good boxer and had asked me out for coffee, and I had agreed. However, I wasn’t about to let my guard down and give him my address for pick-up. It was nothing personal, but I valued my privacy and safety above all else.Lukas was a good-looking man, and I couldn’t deny my attraction to him. But there was something about him that made me feel uneasy. Perhaps it was his piercing amber eyes or the way he carried himself with a hint of pride. Whatever the reason, my body’s reaction to him made me uncomfortable. Why the hell did I even accept his invitation?I didn’t date. I didn’t have the time. Well, that wasn’t true. I had the time, but I just didn’t take it. I had ot

Chapter 7 - Finding some answers
The sun had just begun to set, casting a soft orange hue over the sky, when I pulled up my Beetle outside the police precinct. It was the same place I had brought in Umbridge less than a week before. As I approached the front door, I noticed the workers were busy with their tasks and didn’t pay much attention to me. However, some of them who knew me shot me “please leave” glances as I walked past them. Ignoring their looks, I made my way to Dan’s desk and pulled up a chair to sit down.Dan was sorting through a messy pile of papers when he looked up and saw me. He immediately backed away, his expression stern and serious.“Do you want to get me fired?” he asked. “You know you’re no longer allowed in here unless you’re here to report a crime.”Ignoring his words, I leaned in closer, my voice low and steady. “Who bailed Michael Umbridge? They found him dead today.”Dan’s fingers ran through his hair, tugging at the strands as he felt a surge of frustration. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “but

Chapter 8 - The deal
Lukas POVI pushed the exit door and paced outside of Salvatore’s boxing gym. The tightness of my pants made it unbearable to walk, so I tried to reposition my swollen bulge, but it did nothing to help. Why the fuck did I kiss Max like that? But most importantly, why didn’t she push me away like I thought she would? When Max left abruptly during our coffee together, I had a sudden pang of longing to see her again. Unfortunately, I had no means of contacting her, as the file Jace had given me contained almost no information on her. At that point, I had only been tailing her from Mortimer’s bail bonds to her house, then to the boxing studio. I thought it would be just another simple job of tracking and reporting. But as soon as I entered Sal’s and saw her move, how she fought, and how she carried herself, I knew right then and there that she was the most curious and beautiful creature I had ever seen. Max was a force of nature. I had sparred with her and hadn’t even gone easy on her, bu

Chapter 9 - Looking for clues
As the clock struck a quarter past three, I pulled my old and reliable VW into the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had some time to kill before I was due to meet Lukas at six, and I wanted to investigate the license plate that Dan had given me. My curiosity was piqued by the possibility that it might belong to the Harrington and Leigh Corporation. Umbridge had warned me that people would find and kill him, but he never specified who they were. I wondered if he meant the corporation he stole from and if there was some connection between them and Umbridge’s predicament. It seemed too much of a coincidence to ignore.Once I parked my car, I made my way into the DMV and scanned the area for Doris. She was a familiar face here, the oldest employee by far, and well past her retirement age. Despite this, she refused to retire and clung to her job as if it were a lifeline. Her friends had died soon after they retired, and Doris was convinced that if she stopped working, she
