I leisurely flipped the corner of the page of the book I read quietly on the small café’s exterior terrace. The last rays of the sun shone brightly on what was a perfectly normal day for me. I had ordered my usual—a strong cup of coffee and a croissant. I came to this particular café every day for the last month, and the server didn’t even have to ask me what I wanted since I always got the same thing. Hence, the usual.

I was lost in my book when the young man brought my coffee with a smile and quickly dashed to another table to take a customer’s order. Without taking my eyes off the book, I searched for the handle of my mug, and when I found it, I brought the cup to my lips and sipped on the delicious hot liquid. I hummed in delight, then set it back on the table and raised my eyes to survey the terrace. I was technically on duty, waiting for my target to arrive.

The sun was setting, and I didn’t want to stay here longer than necessary. I checked my watch and encouraged myself to give my target a few more minutes before giving up for the day. If they didn’t show up, I would try again tomorrow.

I returned to reading, ignoring the curious stares of men glancing my way. I didn’t understand what warranted their attention in me. I dressed in what I felt were comfortable clothes—I had a pair of stretchy black jeans and a white T-shirt under a brown leather jacket. I wore ankle-high military-styled boots with the top of my socks sticking out. I had done my hair in a messy bun, a couple of wisps of black strands falling close to my face. I hadn’t even bothered to put makeup on. I didn’t think of myself as a particularly beautiful woman. I wasn’t like most girls in the city, who were graceful and slender. I was small in height but had a toned body that could pack a punch and bring down a brick wall. I was often considered too tomboyish by other girls, and guys found me intimidating. I was mysterious enough to approach yet too threatening to have a relationship with. But I didn’t mind being different, and finding a decent guy in my line of work was rare.

As I continued reading my book, a man’s gruff voice interrupted my thoughts. “Now, what’s a pretty girl like you doing all alone in a pretty place like this?” he said.

I internally groaned and rolled my eyes, having heard that line too many times before. Seriously, guys needed to have better pickup lines. I ignored him and resumed reading, hoping he would leave me alone. However, the man wasn’t easily deterred. He came closer and pulled out the chair in front of me.

“Are you waiting for someone, sweetheart?”

“Not interested, Guy. I’m just here to enjoy my coffee and my book, which, coincidentally, you’re ruining for me. Why don’t you go bother some other poor girl? I’m sure plenty of women here are desperate for male attention,” I replied curtly, hoping he would take the hint and leave.

Despite my uninviting response, the man still didn’t want to leave. I sighed in frustration and closed my book, ready to give him a piece of my mind. But when I looked up at the bothersome person, I was surprised to see that it was the guy I was there to meet.

Well, this would be interesting.

He stood tall, at least six feet, with dark brown hair and a chiselled jawline that looked like a Greek God sculpted it. His skin was perfectly tanned, and his deep-set blue eyes had a magnetic quality that could make any girl swoon. However, his arrogant smirk and ladies’ man demeanour were a complete turnoff for me. Not forgetting to mention he had broken parole and missed his court date for embezzling ten million dollars from Harrington and Leigh Corporation, where he used to work as a financial analyst. In addition to that, he had sold private information from the company on the black market for a large sum of money.

Yeah, that guy was a sleaze, and I was here to bring him to the nearest police station.

I mustered the sweetest smile I could and pretended to be surprised at being in the presence of such a good-looking man. “I’m sorry, that was rude of me,” I said, trying to sound shy. “I didn’t catch your name.”

He ran his eyes over my body, lingering a little too long at my breasts, before flashing me a flirtatious smile. “My name’s Mike, darling. But you didn’t answer my question,” he winked.

“I was waiting for you,” I said, seeking confirmation before proceeding. “Mike, is that short for Michael, by any chance?”

“Michael Umbridge,” he said, extending his hand.

Gotcha.

I shook his hand and licked my lips. “I’m Max. It’s nice to meet you.”

Mike chuckled at my introduction and moved closer to me, brushing against my side. “Would that be short for Maxine?” he asked, his voice dripping with amusement.

“Not quite, but close. My name is Maxime, actually. It’s French,” I replied with a smile, ignoring his sudden proximity.

“Hmm, sounds exotic,” Mike remarked, his eyes lingering on me. “Are you free tonight? I’d like to take you out,” he added with a suggestive grin.

Yeah, not going to happen. You’ll be behind bars before you know it, I thought.

I looked briefly into Mike’s eyes, letting his offer sink in. When I didn’t reply, he continued to coax me. “It’ll be a night you won’t soon forget,” he added, his voice low and seductive.

I grinned. Mike’s proposition intrigued me—not that it mattered since I wouldn’t be going out with him, but I was still curious about what he thought would make it worth my wild.

“And what would that look like?” I asked tentatively as I swirled my finger over the rim of my coffee cup. I bit my lower lip and looked at him under my long lashes.

“I’ll take you to a pleasant restaurant, drink some wine, then maybe a walk in the park and after, we could go back to my place…” Mike placed his hand over my thigh and slowly slid it upward.

Wine, dine, and sex. Wow, that guy was really straightforward. Either he thought I was easy, or he really thought highly of himself.

I looked across the table at Michael, and I felt a tinge of regret. We had been fooling around for a little while, and I was starting to enjoy it. It made me nostalgic for the days when I was carefree and could date whoever I wanted. But, I knew I had to cut to the chase.

“Sounds dreamy,” I said, “but I’m afraid I have a strict policy against dating felons. You’ve been a bad boy, Michael. I’m going to have to bring you in.” I placed his bail papers on the table, and as soon as he saw them, Mike shot up from his chair and jumped over the small fence that separated the terrace from the sidewalk.

I let out a groan. I never liked it when they ran. “Why can’t they just come with me without resistance?” I mumbled to myself as I threw some money on the table and followed my target. Mike was fast, but I was faster.

He turned left into an alley, which I knew was a dead end. I had done my research before my monthly stakeout and had laid out the entire sector in case this happened. He had just unknowingly cornered himself.

Mike was approximately five feet away from me. I turned the corner and dashed forward, tackling him to the ground. He fought back, elbowing me in the face, and I recoiled a little from the pain and surprise. It was rare for a guy to get the better of me. I preferred to be in charge. I felt my lip split from the blow, and blood was dripping from my chin.

I didn’t want him to slip out of my grip, so I snaked up behind him and placed his head in a headlock. He lifted himself up, me hanging from his back like a backpack. Mike quickly backed into the brick wall behind us, hitting me in the process.

“You sure know how to show a girl a good time,” I grunted as I recovered from the hit. My back throbbed with pain, but I couldn’t let him go. “You’re coming with me whether or not you like it.”

“I’ll double… no, triple the amount you’ll get for bringing me in. You know I have the money if you read my file,” Mike croaked as I put more pressure on his neck. “You don’t understand… if they find me… I’m as good as dead… I’m fighting for something bigger than all of us…”

That was what they always said. None of my “skips” ever wanted to go to jail. They always had good reasons not to show up at their court dates, and they almost sounded like a broken record. If they didn’t want to be in this situation, they should’ve been good citizens and followed the law.

“You’re going to have to do better than that, darling.”

I used my legs to push off the wall and made Mike take a nosedive toward the ground once more. I twisted one of his flailing arms in his back and pulled it up. I knew the pressure it was creating was painful, but when he didn’t calm down and stopped wiggling, I repositioned myself on top, grabbed one of his legs, and pulled it up, immobilizing him.

“How are you so strong? You’re tiny!” Mike breathed out, his cheek against the asphalt.

“Why thank you. Now, I’m going to cuff you, and you’ll come with me to the station.”

“Please, you can’t! Believe me… They’re vampires! They’ve created synthetic blood and are marketing it as something else! The information I sold was about blood production and its use. I have a list of names. If you bring me to jail, they’ll find me and kill me!”

I had to hand it to him. I had never heard a story like that before. I gave Mike points for creativity.

“You expect me to believe you stole ten million dollars from a vampire organization?” I asked, skeptical. “I mean, I’m not saying I believe you, but really, why would you steal from them if you knew they were vampires?”

I didn’t believe in vampires, and if such creatures existed, I wouldn’t have stuck around, much less stolen from them unless I had a death wish.

“Harrington and Leigh Corporation deals with a lot of eccentric things, I’ll give you that. It’s a multi-billion dollar empire, but that’s hardly any proof of them being vampires. The only thing they suck is rich people’s money. I’ll ask that you get checked by a doctor. You may have hit your head when I pushed you down, which would explain the nonsense you’re spewing.”

After placing the cuffs on him, I helped Mike up and pushed him toward the alley exit. I had had enough for the day and was looking forward to bringing Mike to the station, getting my paperwork signed by the police, and collecting my bounty back at the shop. However, my plans were interrupted when two black SUVs flanked my car as we neared my old VW Beetle. My heart raced as I quickly shoved Mike into the back seat and hurriedly closed the door. As I turned around, I was met with an extremely tall man dressed in a black two-piece suit, sunglasses, and an earpiece. More people poured out of the cars, all dressed in the same fashion.

Now what?

I greeted them with a slight seriousness, “Good evening, gentlemen. The clubs are a little further down on Main Street. I’m sure they’ll notice if all their bouncers took their breaks at the same time.” Trying to lighten the mood, I chuckled to myself as the song “I Wear My Sunglasses at Night” by Corey Hart popped into my mind.I turned to open my car door, but the man behind me pressed his hand on my car’s side, preventing me from following through with my action. Irritated, I turned to face him as he spoke, “We’re here for Umbridge,” his voice calm but menacing.I froze, unsure of what to do. The bouncer-type men could be competition. Mike was worth a substantial amount, and I got to him first, so I wasn’t inclined to give him up to them. I weighed my options, trying to decide what my next move should be.I could see Mike’s once beautiful face through the window. His hair was a mess from my tackle, and he still had specks of gravel stuck on the blood-crusted scratches on his cheek.

Jace POVI received a message that I had to attend an urgent meeting on the president’s floor. I picked up my pace, but I made sure to hold my head high so as not to appear panicked or rushed. I didn’t want to wrinkle my suit or attract any attention from the hard-working staff on my floor. We rarely got called into impromptu meetings, so I knew it must be serious. When I arrived at the boardroom, most directors were already there, waiting patiently for the man who had called the session. I sat near the room's far end and waited for the hostess to bring me something to drink. She appeared quickly but didn’t look me in the eye as she handed me a glass of red liquid. I sipped it slowly, relishing the taste and the opportunity to calm my nerves. The room was eerily silent, and I could sense everyone was on edge. No one understood why we had been called to this impromptu conference. The boardroom was spacious and could comfortably hold all twenty Harrington and Leigh Corporation directors.

After another unsuccessful surveillance mission, I returned to my apartment feeling disheartened and frustrated. Moe had assigned me a new target, but after searching the man’s usual hideouts for hours, he was nowhere to be found. I had hoped to catch him off guard, but he evaded me this time. Before proceeding to the skip’s home, I always liked to check less conspicuous places to increase my chances of success. I learned from experience that if I went straight to their house, they would become suspicious and might disappear for days or even weeks. I saved that as a last resort and preferred to catch them in public when they least expected it. Being a girl bounty hunter had advantages, and people often underestimated me, which worked to my benefit. After locking my apartment door behind me, I trailed my fingers along the wall until I found the light switch. “Honey, I’m home!” I called out humorously into the space, trying to lighten my mood. I lived alone in a small bachelor pad where

I arrived at Moe’s shop early in the morning, just as Bea unlocked the door to let me in. She greeted me with a broad smile and held the door open for me as I stepped inside. As suspected, last night’s sparring with Lukas made my ribs and arms sore. But I loved it. I hadn’t had a good training in months. Luckily, Moe’s opened around 9 AM, giving me enough time to sleep after my hard night of training at Sal’s.“Want a cup of coffee, Hon?” Bea asked me cheerfully.“Sure, you know how I like it,” I replied, winking at her.Bea had always been thoughtful enough to prepare the coffee machine the day before, so all she had to do was press start in the morning, and coffee would come flowing down. I waited patiently for Bea’s return on the chair in front of her desk, and when she did, she handed me my drink and sat down at her computer, typing away.“Where’s Moe?” I asked, sipping my coffee.“Oh, you know how it is with this rainy weather. His leg hurts, and—”“And the shrapnel makes it even

I finished my shower and wrapped a soft, fluffy towel around my head, soaking up the remaining droplets of water from my hair. After that, I used another towel to pat myself dry.My plans for the day involved meeting Lukas at a quaint café in the heart of downtown. I didn’t know much about Lukas other than the fact he was a good boxer and had asked me out for coffee, and I had agreed. However, I wasn’t about to let my guard down and give him my address for pick-up. It was nothing personal, but I valued my privacy and safety above all else.Lukas was a good-looking man, and I couldn’t deny my attraction to him. But there was something about him that made me feel uneasy. Perhaps it was his piercing amber eyes or the way he carried himself with a hint of pride. Whatever the reason, my body’s reaction to him made me uncomfortable. Why the hell did I even accept his invitation?I didn’t date. I didn’t have the time. Well, that wasn’t true. I had the time, but I just didn’t take it. I had ot

The sun had just begun to set, casting a soft orange hue over the sky, when I pulled up my Beetle outside the police precinct. It was the same place I had brought in Umbridge less than a week before. As I approached the front door, I noticed the workers were busy with their tasks and didn’t pay much attention to me. However, some of them who knew me shot me “please leave” glances as I walked past them. Ignoring their looks, I made my way to Dan’s desk and pulled up a chair to sit down.Dan was sorting through a messy pile of papers when he looked up and saw me. He immediately backed away, his expression stern and serious.“Do you want to get me fired?” he asked. “You know you’re no longer allowed in here unless you’re here to report a crime.”Ignoring his words, I leaned in closer, my voice low and steady. “Who bailed Michael Umbridge? They found him dead today.”Dan’s fingers ran through his hair, tugging at the strands as he felt a surge of frustration. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “but

The tightness of my pants made it unbearable to walk, so I tried to reposition my swollen bulge, but it did nothing to help. Why the fuck did I kiss Max like that? But most importantly, why didn’t she push me away like I thought she would? When Max left abruptly during our coffee together, I had a sudden pang of longing to see her again. Unfortunately, I had no means of contacting her, as the file Jace had given me contained almost no information on her. At that point, I had only been tailing her from Mortimer’s bail bonds to her house, then to the boxing studio. I thought it would be just another simple job of tracking and reporting. But as soon as I entered Sal’s and saw her move, how she fought, and how she carried herself, I knew right then and there that she was the most curious and beautiful creature I had ever seen. As the clock struck a quarter past three, I pulled my old and reliable VW into the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had some time to kill before I was due to meet Lukas at six, and I wanted to investigate the license plate that Dan had given me. My curiosity was piqued by the possibility that it might belong to the Harrington and Leigh Corporation. Umbridge had warned me that people would find and kill him, but he never specified who they were. I wondered if he meant the corporation he stole from and if there was some connection between them and Umbridge’s predicament. It seemed too much of a coincidence to ignore.Once I parked my car, I made my way into the DMV and scanned the area for Doris. She was a familiar face here, the oldest employee by far, and well past her retirement age. Despite this, she refused to retire and clung to her job as if it were a lifeline. Her friends had died soon after they retired, and Doris was convinced that if she stopped working, she

  • Chasing the Huntress   Chapter 68 - The start of our new beginning (The end)

I was high from meeting the director at the children’s home. My discussion with the director yielded interesting facts about the home and its desperate need for funds. The government provided what it could, but the man running the establishment informed me it wasn’t enough. It didn't surprise me. More and more children came into their custody, and they had difficulty finding foster homes. I elatedly accepted the director's promise to inform the board members and send me the paperwork in the coming weeks after discussing my plans to donate money and what I would like to help them with. My interest in funding couldn’t have come at a better time. I barely saw the car ride pass; I was already pulling up the small dirt road leading to Lukas’s cabin in the woods. Lexie stayed there for the moment while Lukas crashed either at his house or at my place. We had taken the habit of coming over there for dinner every two or three days to keep Lex company and to unwind. I was the first to arri

I have a Talulah Townsend for processing.”“Someone will be down shortly.”Talulah had broken parole and hadn’t attended her mandatory drug test. She had been my easiest catch of the week. I only had to drive down the drug strip to find her with a needle stabbed in her arm, half passed out from the shot. She was younger than me, and it broke my heart to see her like this.Oh, the joys of getting back into the trenches. After a long break, I did my best to return to my everyday life. The back door of the station opened, and Officer Dan and a colleague walked out to take the skip. When the woman was in custody, Dan removed her cuffs and returned them to me.“I heard you were back on the job. Christ, Max. You scared the shit out of me when you stopped showing up here! They told me you probably took a vacation, but I know you. Your job’s your life,” Dan said with

The wait was killing me. My leg impatiently shook when I sat on the chair. The lobby under the justice court building was brightly lit and warm. I had never been in that section before. If I didn’t have Moe guiding me through the separate hallway that brought us here, in the basement, I would have never suspected there was a place specifically designed for vampire laws. The fact that I was meeting the congregation was the least of my problems. My mind was on Lukas, whom I hadn’t seen since the fight with Ventura four days before. Jace didn’t want me to see him and had given me very few updates on his health, but the one news that kept bothering me was that the broken ribs were more important than we initially thought. Some had pierced his lungs and had caused damages that Jace feared Lukas would have issues healing correctly. There was also a matter about the drug Ventura and Mike had given Lukas to sedate him, which seemed to cause abnormal delays in his healing.I felt terrible becau

Ventura’s fingers tightened around my neck, and I struggled to breathe.“There goes that defiant hiss again. You’re becoming quite the little vampire. You sound just like one,” he said with a growing hatred. “Do you know how much trouble you’ve been giving me? You killed my small human army of hunters who would do my future bidding. I had a chance at a surprise attack on the Harringtons, but you blew it! You were unsuccessful at making more of yourself and serving me. Why shouldn’t I just snap your pretty neck and be done with it? All my troubles would die along with you.”My hands instinctively circled his forearm to remove some of the pressure. When I saw black spots everywhere, my grip on him lessened. I couldn’t break free, and I thought this was the end. Surprisingly, Ventura let go and grabbed the front of my vest, dragging me on my back to where Lukas and Jace were.“Pathetic girl,” Ventura spat as he dropped me beside my mates. “It doesn’t matter. Everything I need to start my

I stopped my car in front of an old abandoned warehouse on 9th Street. Many were in the sector, but just as the letter said, I knew exactly which one it was. The run-down name of the company was barely visible, but the logo of an owl still showed, reminding me of the Noctua sigil. I could be wrong, but this building seemed the right one.I walked to the warehouse, looking for an entrance. The previous owner had barricaded all the entries with pieces of wood and chains. I groaned and trudged along the exterior to find another way to gain access. When I was about to retrace my steps and search another building, I spotted a broken window on the second floor.“Great,” I mumbled exasperatingly. “As if I do parkour in my spare time.”There was a ledge on the lower window, and I noticed a gutter installed on the wall close to it. I pulled up my leather jacket sleeves and lightly ran for a jump to get a high start. I climbed the downspout until I was at level with the ledge, and I swung my bod

I strolled down the street, taking in the city’s nightly smells. After some time, I stopped and took a deep breath. The neighbourhood was silent, and only the distant sound of car horns honking reminded me that life went on while I was away. The last time I stood in front of my apartment complex, I was drugged in a cab and kidnapped.I hurried along the entrance and pushed the glass doors open. The trek up the stairs was quick, and I walked to my door to unlock it. In the two weeks I was gone, nothing had changed. My apartment had been left untouched, and the little possessions I had left were still in their place. I was surprised. I thought the vampires would have ransacked my home to find any information on me.I opened my mini-fridge and pulled out the last remaining beer bottle.I reflected on Jace, Lukas, Moe and Bea’s plan as I sat. She had been with those two since their return to the cabin, and it slightly irritated me to have to share Max with two other vampires—one werewolf was already enough.“You’re doing that thing again.
