Lukas POV
I pushed the exit door and paced outside of Salvatore’s boxing gym. The tightness of my pants made it unbearable to walk, so I tried to reposition my swollen bulge, but it did nothing to help.
Why the fuck did I kiss Max like that? But most importantly, why didn’t she push me away like I thought she would?
When Max left abruptly during our coffee together, I had a sudden pang of longing to see her again. Unfortunately, I had no means of contacting her, as the file Jace had given me contained almost no information on her. At that point, I had only been tailing her from Mortimer’s bail bonds to her house, then to the boxing studio. I thought it would be just another simple job of tracking and reporting. But as soon as I entered Sal’s and saw her move, how she fought, and how she carried herself, I knew right then and there that she was the most curious and beautiful creature I had ever seen. Max was a force of nature. I had sparred with her and hadn’t even gone easy on her, but she made me work double-time. This had never happened before.
Thoughts of her constantly invaded my brain and clouded my judgement in an unprecedented way. I wondered if what I felt was a sign that I had met my destined mate. The elders in my pack had mentioned that hundreds of years ago, werewolves were said to have destined mates, but over time, we lost the ability to find them. Nowadays, only a handful were lucky enough to have powerful feelings when they meet their destined partners, and I believed that the possessiveness and the intense emotions I had when I met Max were signs that she could be the one. All I saw was her while the rest of the world peeled away in a blur of movements.
But why did it have to be Max of all the women in this city?
My attention was drawn to my pocket as something inside vibrated, causing me to lose my train of thought. I pulled out my cell phone and noticed I had three missed calls from Jace.
Shit.
I had to meet him tonight, and I didn’t know what I would report back. I couldn’t tell him what was happening—Max was a job, despite everything I was feeling on the inside.
I was so fucked! I needed this job to be over.
I made my way to the designated meeting place where Jace had asked me to meet him. My feet felt heavy and slow. I let out a loud groan, feeling stressed about the whole situation. I spotted Jace’s car parked a few blocks away from the gym. Without wasting any time, I quickly ran toward it and opened the passenger door.
Jace looked at me with suspicion in his eyes and cleared his throat. “Why haven’t you returned any of my calls for the past three hours?” he asked, his voice tinged with annoyance.
I tried to calm him down, “Relax, mate. The girl left me at the café, and I tried to find her again. Why are you parked in front of a public parking space?”
Jace’s face softened slightly. “Well, Casanova, after she left you, I followed her to the police station. She left maybe thirty minutes later, and I followed her here. She hasn’t come down yet.”
I chuckled, knowing Max had given him the slip. I rolled down the window and looked up at the multi-level parking area above us. Sure enough, she must have jumped to the building next to it when she thought she was being followed.
Clever girl.
“You’re wasting your time, buddy. I just met with her back at the boxing gym,” I said.
Jace let out a sigh, clearly annoyed Max had outsmarted him.
“Did you find anything useful, at least? I couldn’t get much out of her when I met her yesterday, and she barely looked at me long enough to hypnotize her,” Jace asked, his tone curious.
I took a deep breath before responding, “Umbridge was just a contract. Max isn’t involved in anything. She just did her job.”
Jace looked at me with a mixture of surprise and amusement. “Wow, you’re already on a first-name basis with her. She must have made a lasting impression on you.”
His tone was teasing, and I rolled my eyes in response.
“Oh, fuck off.”
Jace let out a brief laugh after I landed a light punch on his arm. He then shifted his attention back to the matter at hand, his expression turning serious. “Have you any idea how she managed to take down one of our men? I mean, no human could have done that.”
I paused to consider his question. “Well, she’s certainly strong and fast,” I replied. “She kept me on my toes when we sparred at the boxing gym. But based on my initial meeting with her, she doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. Besides, I would’ve picked up on the scent if she were a werewolf or a vampire.”
No. Max wasn’t either, but she smelled different from other humans. I didn’t know what it was. Thinking back to the smell of her arousal when I gripped her ass and pulled her up on me, my heartbeat accelerated. She was making me go wild.
“Good work, Lukas. I’ll report this to my father, and we can stop this babysitting business. If she knows nothing, then she’s not a threat. By the way, is everything okay with you? You seem a bit tense.”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I replied, sighing with relief. “I have a lot on my mind right now. I recently landed a contract for a construction project, and it’s been keeping me up at night. And honestly, you’re not helping either,” I added with a playful smirk. I couldn’t reveal the real reason for my behaviour to Jace.
Jace rolled his eyes and put on a wounded expression. “Ach, don’t lie to me! I’m not blind. That bounty hunter sure is a sweet piece of ass. You enjoyed following a beautiful girl around. You should have seen her when her shirt became see-through. There wasn’t much left for the imagination. She had a really nice rack if you know what I mean.
I didn’t like how he talked about Max, so I inadvertently growled at his comment, which resulted in Jace raising an eyebrow at me.
“Oh, what’s this, now? Do you… like her? You never like anyone!” Jace’s smile widened when I didn’t reply, showing me his elongated canines. “No? Well, if you’re not interested, you won’t mind if I see her again, then.”
“Please don’t,” I said quickly, trying to downplay the situation. “We all know what happens to your one-night stands. They wake up with no memory of the night before and a quarter of their blood missing. I took the blame for your last fuck up, but I’ll not let you do Max that way.”
“Oh, come on, man. Why’d you have to bring Joanna into this conversation? It’s not my fault that the man I was charged with following had a gorgeous daughter. Plus, she provided me with all the information I needed from her father. I just hadn’t planned on him showing up when I was going down on his daughter. You were supposed to be my lookout.”
I huffed in annoyance and opened the car door, frustrated with Jace’s stubbornness. It seemed like no matter how much I tried to convince him, my opinion didn’t matter. So, instead, I decided that I would have to keep Max away from him, which shouldn’t be that hard, given what happened at Salvatore’s boxing gym. The feelings I had for her were definitely mutual.
“What makes this bounty hunter so special that you don’t want me near her?” he asked.
“Do whatever you feel like doing,” I replied as I got out and walked away. “It’s not like what I say matters, anyway.”
Jace rolled down the passenger window and slowly followed me onto the street. “Get back in the car, Lukas. It’s a thirty-minute drive from here to your house. You won’t walk all the way home,” he said.
I was determined to stick to my decision. “Watch me.”
My mind was made up. Once this job ended, I had every intention of getting to know Max the right way.
I growled when he still followed. “Listen, I get that it’s hard for you to back off, but could you do it this once? For old-time sake?”
Jace tilted his head, but the glint of mischief in his eyes further proved my point that he would not let go that easily.
“I would, but we've already made plans to see each other again,” he admitted.
“I thought you said nothing happened other than she drenched herself with her drink, and you offered to pay for her lunch?”
“Yes, but she has my jacket. She offered to return it to me the next time we meet,” Jace explained with a proud smile.
So that was his plan. To force a second meeting with Max. To what end, though, I had no idea.
Jace leaned back in his seat, a wistful expression on his face. “I can’t resist a mouse playing hard to get. It’s like a challenge, you know? And that huntress, she’s got this mysteriousness about her that draws me in. Even though she’s not really my type, I can’t get her out of my head.”
I knew exactly what he was talking about. I felt the same way. Max was in my mind constantly, and I didn’t want to stop thinking about her, about all the things I would love to do to her.
“Look, since we’re both interested in pursuing her, let’s make a deal,” Jace continued. “Once this whole thing blows over, which should be relatively soon, we won’t talk about her when we’re together, and we won’t try to sabotage each other’s chances. I don’t want a girl to come between our friendship.”
If we did this and “dated” her, Max would be free to decide which of us she liked best. I didn’t like the idea of competing with Jace for Max’s affections, but it seemed inevitable. However, I was confident I could win her over. Jace wasn’t the love-you-long type of guy. He was a playboy who changed toys whenever it suited him, and I didn’t think Max was into that. I just hoped she would see it quickly and ditch him the first chance she got.
“Best man gets the girl?” I stuck my hand through the car window for Jace to shake it.
“Deal.”
As the clock struck a quarter past three, I pulled my old and reliable VW into the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had some time to kill before I was due to meet Lukas at six, and I wanted to investigate the license plate that Dan had given me. My curiosity was piqued by the possibility that it might belong to the Harrington and Leigh Corporation. Umbridge had warned me that people would find and kill him, but he never specified who they were. I wondered if he meant the corporation he stole from and if there was some connection between them and Umbridge’s predicament. It seemed too much of a coincidence to ignore.Once I parked my car, I made my way into the DMV and scanned the area for Doris. She was a familiar face here, the oldest employee by far, and well past her retirement age. Despite this, she refused to retire and clung to her job as if it were a lifeline. Her friends had died soon after they retired, and Doris was convinced that if she stopped working, she
I asked Lukas with a grin, “Are you ready for round two?” I had secured my hand wrappings and was eager to change my mind with our sparring session.Unfortunately, Lukas didn’t seem to share my excitement. He frowned and responded, “I’d love that, but that’s not what I had in mind.” His beautiful amber eyes were hidden beneath thick black lashes, and his long curly hair fell on his face. I resisted the urge to come closer and remove the strands from his face.I slightly jumped in place and made small circles with my wrists to warm up. I needed to think of something else.Lukas continued, “I was hoping we could go out and grab a bite to eat. Since you didn’t tell me where you lived, I thought it best to meet here.”Lukas was dressed casually and wasn’t prepared for a fight. He wore dark-washed jeans over his construction boots and a white T-shirt underneath a black jacket. My heart screamed, “Yes! Yes!” but I had to force other words out. “I’m sorry, but I’ve had a rough day today. I wo
I skillfully picked the lock to Umbridge’s apartment and managed to slip inside without disturbing the red police tape wrapped around the door. Once inside, I made sure to lock the door behind me and tip-toed around the few remaining markers on the floor, trying my best to leave no trace of my presence. As I explored the apartment, I was overcome with a feeling of frustration and exhaustion. The night with Lukas had been a disaster, and I barely managed to get any sleep at all. I had woken up at sunrise and taken a cold shower before heading to Moe’s to obtain the Michael Umbridge file. With the file in hand, I had come straight to Umbridge’s home to investigate. However, my hopes were soon crushed. Everything appeared to have already been thoroughly searched and investigated. Every possible piece of evidence, including the trash cans, had been removed, leaving me with nothing to work with.I summarized the pool of dried blood that stained the floor had been where Umbridge died. It was
I pressed the intercom button at the police precinct and waited for the robotic-sounding voice to respond. When it did, I presented myself and stated that I had another skip for processing, and the person on the other end sent two police officers to take the perp off my hands.I decided to lie low after my completely illegal investigation of the Umbridge case a few days ago, and I hadn’t seen or heard from Lukas in days. The feeling I had was the same as when you give your phone number to some cute guy with a promise of a call, and he never does. It was irritating and humiliating, even more so since I had jumped on him and savagely made out with his face. The back door to the precinct opened, and police officer Dan came down. He always came when he knew I was bringing someone in. However, the look he gave me when we met sent chills down my spine. If a look could kill, I’d already be dead and buried six feet under.“What crawled up your asshole today?” I muttered to Dan while handing hi
I walked into Mortimer’s Bail Bonds and collapsed into the seat in front of Bea. She glanced at me from under her lashes, then stopped typing and pushed her glasses up her nose with her index finger.“Already done?”I handed her a small stack of bail bond paperwork, and she quickly reviewed it, entering all the information into the computer system. But when she reached the last case, she gave me a stern look.“Four? You’ve caught four skips in one week? Honey, maybe it’s time to take a break,” Bea said, her eyes filled with concern.I waved my hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. I’m just trying to keep myself busy. This is an excellent distraction.”Bea’s eyes softened, but she still looked worried. She and Moe always knew I liked to keep myself occupied, but maybe I had gone a little too far this time. I had been chasing and handcuffing people non-stop, barely taking the time to eat or sleep. It was a wonder I hadn’t started smoking cigarettes with all the stress I was putting myself un
Jace POVThe night was starting on a high note, and I was elated by the turnout at the opening of my new vampire nightclub. The club was designed to cater to the needs of the vampire community in the city, providing them with a safe and secure environment where they could socialize, conduct business, and have fun with their pets outside of business hours.I wanted to create a space that would not only serve their needs but also promote peaceful coexistence between vampires and humans. This club would also serve as a distributor for the synthetic blood created by the Harrington and Leigh Corporation, known as V Blood, which was a game-changer for the community. The launch of V Blood was the highlight of the century, and the Harrington and Leigh Corporation hoped that it would put an end to vampires robbing hospitals or killing humans needlessly to obtain the blood they so desperately needed to survive. Synthetic blood was a revolutionary product that would enable us to coexist with huma
I gradually woke up, and my head throbbed mercilessly. I opened one eye and noticed a glass of water sitting next to two pills and a note, which seemed to have been placed there with care. I groaned and turned away from the intrusive light, shielding my face with a pillow. Suddenly, a wave of memories from the previous night crashed over me, leaving me feeling disoriented and vulnerable. I recalled seeing Lukas and drinking a copious amount of whiskey to numb the pain that still lingered from our last encounter. I had hoped to make him jealous if he was watching. I faintly remembered possibly kissing Jace, but then everything went hazy, and I must have blacked out. After gathering my courage, I tossed the pillow aside and reached for the pills, my fingers trembling. I washed them down with the water, feeling the cool liquid soothing my parched throat. I then turned to the note, dreading what it might reveal about my behaviour the previous night. I hoped I hadn’t embarrassed myself too
Lukas POVAfter the incident involving Max and me at the country cabin, I kept a close eye on her from a distance. I was angry for allowing things to escalate so quickly between us. I should have known better. Max needed time to understand and accept what I was.I had been hiding my true self from everyone in this city for years, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up that façade. When Max and I were together in the cabin, things got heated, and I felt on the verge of revealing my true identity. But that dread of being rejected, or worse, feared, made me back away from her. If I hadn’t stopped, I would have marked Max, and she would have become mine per the werewolf bond. But Max deserved to have the choice, and I had no intention of forcing it on her without her consent. She was as drawn to me as I was to her, so that had to mean something; however, the choice would ultimately be hers. However, I’d need to tell her soon before Jace got the upper hand—if he didn’t alread
I was high from meeting the director at the children’s home. My discussion with the director yielded interesting facts about the home and its desperate need for funds. The government provided what it could, but the man running the establishment informed me it wasn’t enough. It didn't surprise me. More and more children came into their custody, and they had difficulty finding foster homes. I elatedly accepted the director's promise to inform the board members and send me the paperwork in the coming weeks after discussing my plans to donate money and what I would like to help them with. My interest in funding couldn’t have come at a better time. I barely saw the car ride pass; I was already pulling up the small dirt road leading to Lukas’s cabin in the woods. Lexie stayed there for the moment while Lukas crashed either at his house or at my place. We had taken the habit of coming over there for dinner every two or three days to keep Lex company and to unwind. I was the first to arri
6 months laterMy finger pressed the intercom button of the police precinct.“Yes?” The robotic-sounding voice asked.“It’s Max. I have a Talulah Townsend for processing.”“Someone will be down shortly.”Talulah had broken parole and hadn’t attended her mandatory drug test. She had been my easiest catch of the week. I only had to drive down the drug strip to find her with a needle stabbed in her arm, half passed out from the shot. She was younger than me, and it broke my heart to see her like this.Oh, the joys of getting back into the trenches. After a long break, I did my best to return to my everyday life. The back door of the station opened, and Officer Dan and a colleague walked out to take the skip. When the woman was in custody, Dan removed her cuffs and returned them to me.“I heard you were back on the job. Christ, Max. You scared the shit out of me when you stopped showing up here! They told me you probably took a vacation, but I know you. Your job’s your life,” Dan said with
The wait was killing me. My leg impatiently shook when I sat on the chair. The lobby under the justice court building was brightly lit and warm. I had never been in that section before. If I didn’t have Moe guiding me through the separate hallway that brought us here, in the basement, I would have never suspected there was a place specifically designed for vampire laws. The fact that I was meeting the congregation was the least of my problems. My mind was on Lukas, whom I hadn’t seen since the fight with Ventura four days before. Jace didn’t want me to see him and had given me very few updates on his health, but the one news that kept bothering me was that the broken ribs were more important than we initially thought. Some had pierced his lungs and had caused damages that Jace feared Lukas would have issues healing correctly. There was also a matter about the drug Ventura and Mike had given Lukas to sedate him, which seemed to cause abnormal delays in his healing.I felt terrible becau
Ventura’s fingers tightened around my neck, and I struggled to breathe.“There goes that defiant hiss again. You’re becoming quite the little vampire. You sound just like one,” he said with a growing hatred. “Do you know how much trouble you’ve been giving me? You killed my small human army of hunters who would do my future bidding. I had a chance at a surprise attack on the Harringtons, but you blew it! You were unsuccessful at making more of yourself and serving me. Why shouldn’t I just snap your pretty neck and be done with it? All my troubles would die along with you.”My hands instinctively circled his forearm to remove some of the pressure. When I saw black spots everywhere, my grip on him lessened. I couldn’t break free, and I thought this was the end. Surprisingly, Ventura let go and grabbed the front of my vest, dragging me on my back to where Lukas and Jace were.“Pathetic girl,” Ventura spat as he dropped me beside my mates. “It doesn’t matter. Everything I need to start my
I stopped my car in front of an old abandoned warehouse on 9th Street. Many were in the sector, but just as the letter said, I knew exactly which one it was. The run-down name of the company was barely visible, but the logo of an owl still showed, reminding me of the Noctua sigil. I could be wrong, but this building seemed the right one.I walked to the warehouse, looking for an entrance. The previous owner had barricaded all the entries with pieces of wood and chains. I groaned and trudged along the exterior to find another way to gain access. When I was about to retrace my steps and search another building, I spotted a broken window on the second floor.“Great,” I mumbled exasperatingly. “As if I do parkour in my spare time.”There was a ledge on the lower window, and I noticed a gutter installed on the wall close to it. I pulled up my leather jacket sleeves and lightly ran for a jump to get a high start. I climbed the downspout until I was at level with the ledge, and I swung my bod
I strolled down the street, taking in the city’s nightly smells. After some time, I stopped and took a deep breath. The neighbourhood was silent, and only the distant sound of car horns honking reminded me that life went on while I was away. The last time I stood in front of my apartment complex, I was drugged in a cab and kidnapped.I hurried along the entrance and pushed the glass doors open. The trek up the stairs was quick, and I walked to my door to unlock it. In the two weeks I was gone, nothing had changed. My apartment had been left untouched, and the little possessions I had left were still in their place. I was surprised. I thought the vampires would have ransacked my home to find any information on me.I opened my mini-fridge and pulled out the last remaining beer bottle.I reflected on Jace, Lukas, Moe and Bea’s plan as I sat. They wanted to draw out Ventura from wherever he was hiding, and the only thing they thought would succeed was to resume my life. Ventura would try t
Jace POVI watched Max from afar. She was a small thing compared to the tall vampire she called Moe. She had been with those two since their return to the cabin, and it slightly irritated me to have to share Max with two other vampires—one werewolf was already enough.“You’re doing that thing again. Stop it,” Lukas called from behind.I turned around and smugly slouched. “What exactly am I doing?”“I’ve known you for years, Jace. I know all your telltale signs. You know something that you haven’t told anyone. Spill.”My friend’s amber eyes darkened menacingly. I sighed and pressed a hand over my face. Lukas was an annoying dog but had good intentions.“I knew the congregation had released Ventura before coming here.”Lukas watched me from a distance. His face was becoming red, but I ignored it. Why was Lukas getting angry with me?“When were you planning on telling us?”I shrugged and crossed my arms. “This morning, but I didn’t think it was important.”“You should have told us the min
Lukas and Jace’s kisses lingered on my skin before I stepped under the water. It washed away their scent on my body, and I sighed. My fingers trailed the length of my neck and hovered over my swollen lips. They still tingled from Lukas and Jace’s bites. My face heated at the memory of Jace telling me to go on top of Lukas. I had never had sex with two men at the same time, and when Lukas filled my dripping wet pussy, and Jace stretched my ass with his dick, I almost forgot how to breathe. The feeling I had in the pit of my stomach was dreadful, yet exciting. The sensation had been odd and pleasing. My skin shivered with need and all the dirty things I wanted the three of us to do. I had both of them in me, and each thrust and withdrawal had me wanting, no, almost begging for more. I couldn’t seem to get enough of them. Their cocks filled each cavity perfectly, and their rhythms were in delightful unison. It was even more thrilling when Lukas and Jace gave me the reins, and I could choo
Lukas POVThe smell of Max’s arousal woke me. I had been lightly asleep but was now fully awake, and my dick painfully swelled inside my boxers in response.I didn’t want to act on her scent because I didn’t know if she was excited for me or for Jace, who was inconveniently sleeping on Max’s other side.I needed to change my mind. Anything was better than thinking of everything I wanted to do to Max.I thought back to what had happened before I went to sleep. After furiously running in wolf form, I returned to the cabin and found Jace waiting beside Max’s sleeping shape on the bed. He had gotten here much faster than I wanted, and I despised every second of him brushing his light fingers against the pale white skin of her bare legs.No amount of yelling and violent disagreements could remove Jace’s bond with Max. She was as much his as she was mine. Jace and I both made our claims, and the rest was history. We would be there for her, but Jace and I would need to have a more profound di
