Jace POV
I received a message that I had to attend an urgent meeting on the president’s floor. I picked up my pace, but I made sure to hold my head high so as not to appear panicked or rushed. I didn’t want to wrinkle my suit or attract any attention from the hard-working staff on my floor. We rarely got called into impromptu meetings, so I knew it must be serious.
When I arrived at the boardroom, most directors were already there, waiting patiently for the man who had called the session. I sat near the room's far end and waited for the hostess to bring me something to drink. She appeared quickly but didn’t look me in the eye as she handed me a glass of red liquid. I sipped it slowly, relishing the taste and the opportunity to calm my nerves.
The room was eerily silent, and I could sense everyone was on edge. No one understood why we had been called to this impromptu conference.
The boardroom was spacious and could comfortably hold all twenty Harrington and Leigh Corporation directors. The seats were made of black leather and perfectly cushioned, providing a comfortable place to sit for a lengthy meeting. The table in the center of the room was a slick, straight design made of a massive slab of dark oak, which added elegance and wealth to the room. The walls were bare of any decorations or pictures, but behind me was an enormous window that provided a breathtaking view of the entire city from the hundredth floor of the Harrington and Leigh Corporation building. With that kind of view, what else was needed?
Just above us was the penthouse, which housed the corporation's president. I could feel the weight of his position as the elevator dinged, and a few bodyguards streamed out just before the president himself. As a sign of respect, we all stood up, and when our boss seated himself, we did the same.
The meeting room was tense and quiet as Mr. Harrington said, “I’ll ask once, and I better hear the answer I want. Who was responsible for bringing Michael Umbridge back here?”
The meeting members looked at each other nervously, knowing the consequences of giving an unsatisfactory answer. Meanwhile, I remained composed and continued sipping my drink, pleased that I wasn’t the one responsible for Umbridge’s return. I relished the fact the pressure was on someone else for a change.
Director Ventura rose from his chair and said, “Sir, my men were supposed to bring Umbridge into our custody.”
The president’s face reddened with anger. “Then why is he not here? Do you realize that this man could single-handedly bring my empire down and all of us with it?”
“They encountered an issue… a girl, to be more precise. She had already found Umbridge and had him detained in her vehicle. It would seem she was about to bring him to the police station. When my men intervened, she brought one down before he could handle her. I’ve sent more men to get him out of prison. He should be within our reach in a few minutes.”
The president slammed his fist on the table. “How could a girl be able to leave with what is rightfully mine?”
Ventura replied, “Well... It would seem she was pretty strong for a human. She was able to subdue one guard with a single move.”
I found the situation intriguing. I had seen Ventura’s men before, and they were muscular and intimidating, much like the president’s bodyguards. It was hard to believe that a single woman could overpower one of them. Yet, she did, and there we were.
“I want you to gather all the information you can about her and give it to Jace. He knows what to do. Leave now, and don’t come back empty-handed again,” the president said, his voice dripping with anger.
Director Ventura bowed in acquiescence before hastily exiting the conference room. I felt slightly annoyed at the thought of having to do some dirty work again, but I kept listening to the conversation.
“What about the information Umbridge sold? What happened to it?” the president inquired.
“We found a private buyer, took care of him, and retrieved the information. I also disposed of the people responsible for allowing Umbridge to access the confidential files. The traces have been cleaned, and there is nothing to go on if someone investigates,” Director Black responded with a hint of pride in his voice.
“Good. Mr. Bell, please escort Mr. Black to the basement and have him wait for me there,” the president said, pointing to one of his guards.
Director Black’s face paled. “I don’t understand. I removed the threat! Please reconsider.”
However, the president’s expression remained stern. He wasn’t pleased with Black’s begging and said, “Your team was responsible for the breach, so I’ll hold you accountable. Bell, take him away.”
The director pleaded once more and cried out when the big guard came over and grabbed him by the neck. Mr. Black bared his teeth and hissed, squirming to free himself from the man’s grasp. He momentarily did escape but was seized immediately after.
This only angered the president, making him reach for something in his pocket and move closer to the two men. He ordered Bell to stand aside, and Mr. Black seemed relieved by the change of heart. My pulse sped up at the same time as the president plunged a stake through Black’s chest, making him disintegrate to ash in the blink of an eye.
The company president turned around, his eyes piercing and resolute, suggesting he didn’t tolerate poor performance. “Does anyone else have any excuses for their work, or can we continue with our next topic?”
The board members remained silent, and the discussion on the topic of blood production and sales began over the hum of a vacuum cleaner, sucking up Mr. Black’s ashes. When the meeting ended, the directors were eager to leave and return to their designated tasks, relieved to have survived the meeting unscathed.
However, I stayed behind, knowing that the president would want to discuss his plans for the girl. I had reservations about this job, feeling that I could be put to better use in the company than as a detective or hitman. I looked at the president sitting at the other end of the table and sighed heavily. I knew he trusted me completely, and it would be painful to disappoint him again. My last job had nearly cost me my life, and I was sure that the only reason he had spared me was that I was his son.
Having a father at the helm of such a massive enterprise had its advantages, but it also meant I had more responsibilities than I cared to handle. I had an eternity before me, yet I longed for a more exciting future. The bureaucracy that came with the job bored me to death.
When my father opened his mouth to speak, the intercom in the room interrupted him, and the receptionist informed him that Mr. Ventura had returned with the requested information.
The man walked into the boardroom, and my father pointed toward me and instructed Ventura to give me the envelope and leave. He quickly handed me the file and left the room. I guessed he had heard about what happened with Mr. Black and was grateful my father didn’t do the same to him.
“Well? What did that poor bastard find on the girl?”
I went through the documents but couldn’t find anything substantial. “Her name is Maxime Ravenwood. There’s no personal information, no picture, and no address available. It seems like she’s practically off the grid. Ventura found out she works as a bounty hunter and mostly gets her contracts from Mortimer’s bail bonds. That’s how she got involved with Umbridge. I’ll start there.”
“Ravenwood, you said her name was,” my father repeated thoughtfully. “Hmm.”
“What?” I asked, tilting my head curiously. “Do you know any Ravenwoods?”
To my surprise, my father remained silent for a few seconds before folding his hands over the table. His expression turned pensive, deep in thought. He was deliberating whether or not to share a secret with me.
“Once, many centuries ago. Edward Ravenwood was a reputable and wealthy vampire, but he fell from our graces when he took a human as his wife. He died maybe twenty-five or thirty years ago. We all thought at first that she was his pet, but… Anyway, I doubt there are any ties. The wife died on the same day he did, and their estate is pretty much left in a decrepit state. Find the girl and the information she possesses, then report back. If she knows too much, you know what to do. We’ve been living peacefully amongst humans for centuries; I would hate for our kind to be exposed again. I have no doubts in my mind that there are still vampire hunters roaming the earth. They’ve been a pain in my side for many years. If not for them, your mother would still be with us. It would be best to let sleeping dogs rest.”
I nodded in agreement. “Very well. I’ll start first thing tonight.”
Before I could leave, my father warned, “Oh, and don’t bring that ‘dog’ with you. The last mission I sent you on turned to shit because of him. I want this handled low-key.” His gaze was venomous.
I hung my head and then left. I pulled out my phone and dialled my best friend’s number when I was out of sight. There was no way in hell I was doing this all by myself. Screw my father’s request.
“Lukas, get dressed. I’m on my way to pick you up. We’ve got ourselves a new stakeout.”
After another unsuccessful surveillance mission, I returned to my apartment feeling disheartened and frustrated. Moe had assigned me a new target, but after searching the man’s usual hideouts for hours, he was nowhere to be found. I had hoped to catch him off guard, but he evaded me this time. Before proceeding to the skip’s home, I always liked to check less conspicuous places to increase my chances of success. I learned from experience that if I went straight to their house, they would become suspicious and might disappear for days or even weeks. I saved that as a last resort and preferred to catch them in public when they least expected it. Being a girl bounty hunter had advantages, and people often underestimated me, which worked to my benefit. After locking my apartment door behind me, I trailed my fingers along the wall until I found the light switch. “Honey, I’m home!” I called out humorously into the space, trying to lighten my mood. I lived alone in a small bachelor pad where
I arrived at Moe’s shop early in the morning, just as Bea unlocked the door to let me in. She greeted me with a broad smile and held the door open for me as I stepped inside. As suspected, last night’s sparring with Lukas made my ribs and arms sore. But I loved it. I hadn’t had a good training in months. Luckily, Moe’s opened around 9 AM, giving me enough time to sleep after my hard night of training at Sal’s.“Want a cup of coffee, Hon?” Bea asked me cheerfully.“Sure, you know how I like it,” I replied, winking at her.Bea had always been thoughtful enough to prepare the coffee machine the day before, so all she had to do was press start in the morning, and coffee would come flowing down. I waited patiently for Bea’s return on the chair in front of her desk, and when she did, she handed me my drink and sat down at her computer, typing away.“Where’s Moe?” I asked, sipping my coffee.“Oh, you know how it is with this rainy weather. His leg hurts, and—”“And the shrapnel makes it even
I finished my shower and wrapped a soft, fluffy towel around my head, soaking up the remaining droplets of water from my hair. After that, I used another towel to pat myself dry.My plans for the day involved meeting Lukas at a quaint café in the heart of downtown. I didn’t know much about Lukas other than the fact he was a good boxer and had asked me out for coffee, and I had agreed. However, I wasn’t about to let my guard down and give him my address for pick-up. It was nothing personal, but I valued my privacy and safety above all else.Lukas was a good-looking man, and I couldn’t deny my attraction to him. But there was something about him that made me feel uneasy. Perhaps it was his piercing amber eyes or the way he carried himself with a hint of pride. Whatever the reason, my body’s reaction to him made me uncomfortable. Why the hell did I even accept his invitation?I didn’t date. I didn’t have the time. Well, that wasn’t true. I had the time, but I just didn’t take it. I had ot
The sun had just begun to set, casting a soft orange hue over the sky, when I pulled up my Beetle outside the police precinct. It was the same place I had brought in Umbridge less than a week before. As I approached the front door, I noticed the workers were busy with their tasks and didn’t pay much attention to me. However, some of them who knew me shot me “please leave” glances as I walked past them. Ignoring their looks, I made my way to Dan’s desk and pulled up a chair to sit down.Dan was sorting through a messy pile of papers when he looked up and saw me. He immediately backed away, his expression stern and serious.“Do you want to get me fired?” he asked. “You know you’re no longer allowed in here unless you’re here to report a crime.”Ignoring his words, I leaned in closer, my voice low and steady. “Who bailed Michael Umbridge? They found him dead today.”Dan’s fingers ran through his hair, tugging at the strands as he felt a surge of frustration. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “but
Lukas POVI pushed the exit door and paced outside of Salvatore’s boxing gym. The tightness of my pants made it unbearable to walk, so I tried to reposition my swollen bulge, but it did nothing to help. Why the fuck did I kiss Max like that? But most importantly, why didn’t she push me away like I thought she would? When Max left abruptly during our coffee together, I had a sudden pang of longing to see her again. Unfortunately, I had no means of contacting her, as the file Jace had given me contained almost no information on her. At that point, I had only been tailing her from Mortimer’s bail bonds to her house, then to the boxing studio. I thought it would be just another simple job of tracking and reporting. But as soon as I entered Sal’s and saw her move, how she fought, and how she carried herself, I knew right then and there that she was the most curious and beautiful creature I had ever seen. Max was a force of nature. I had sparred with her and hadn’t even gone easy on her, bu
As the clock struck a quarter past three, I pulled my old and reliable VW into the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had some time to kill before I was due to meet Lukas at six, and I wanted to investigate the license plate that Dan had given me. My curiosity was piqued by the possibility that it might belong to the Harrington and Leigh Corporation. Umbridge had warned me that people would find and kill him, but he never specified who they were. I wondered if he meant the corporation he stole from and if there was some connection between them and Umbridge’s predicament. It seemed too much of a coincidence to ignore.Once I parked my car, I made my way into the DMV and scanned the area for Doris. She was a familiar face here, the oldest employee by far, and well past her retirement age. Despite this, she refused to retire and clung to her job as if it were a lifeline. Her friends had died soon after they retired, and Doris was convinced that if she stopped working, she
I asked Lukas with a grin, “Are you ready for round two?” I had secured my hand wrappings and was eager to change my mind with our sparring session.Unfortunately, Lukas didn’t seem to share my excitement. He frowned and responded, “I’d love that, but that’s not what I had in mind.” His beautiful amber eyes were hidden beneath thick black lashes, and his long curly hair fell on his face. I resisted the urge to come closer and remove the strands from his face.I slightly jumped in place and made small circles with my wrists to warm up. I needed to think of something else.Lukas continued, “I was hoping we could go out and grab a bite to eat. Since you didn’t tell me where you lived, I thought it best to meet here.”Lukas was dressed casually and wasn’t prepared for a fight. He wore dark-washed jeans over his construction boots and a white T-shirt underneath a black jacket. My heart screamed, “Yes! Yes!” but I had to force other words out. “I’m sorry, but I’ve had a rough day today. I wo
I skillfully picked the lock to Umbridge’s apartment and managed to slip inside without disturbing the red police tape wrapped around the door. Once inside, I made sure to lock the door behind me and tip-toed around the few remaining markers on the floor, trying my best to leave no trace of my presence. As I explored the apartment, I was overcome with a feeling of frustration and exhaustion. The night with Lukas had been a disaster, and I barely managed to get any sleep at all. I had woken up at sunrise and taken a cold shower before heading to Moe’s to obtain the Michael Umbridge file. With the file in hand, I had come straight to Umbridge’s home to investigate. However, my hopes were soon crushed. Everything appeared to have already been thoroughly searched and investigated. Every possible piece of evidence, including the trash cans, had been removed, leaving me with nothing to work with.I summarized the pool of dried blood that stained the floor had been where Umbridge died. It was
I was high from meeting the director at the children’s home. My discussion with the director yielded interesting facts about the home and its desperate need for funds. The government provided what it could, but the man running the establishment informed me it wasn’t enough. It didn't surprise me. More and more children came into their custody, and they had difficulty finding foster homes. I elatedly accepted the director's promise to inform the board members and send me the paperwork in the coming weeks after discussing my plans to donate money and what I would like to help them with. My interest in funding couldn’t have come at a better time. I barely saw the car ride pass; I was already pulling up the small dirt road leading to Lukas’s cabin in the woods. Lexie stayed there for the moment while Lukas crashed either at his house or at my place. We had taken the habit of coming over there for dinner every two or three days to keep Lex company and to unwind. I was the first to arri
6 months laterMy finger pressed the intercom button of the police precinct.“Yes?” The robotic-sounding voice asked.“It’s Max. I have a Talulah Townsend for processing.”“Someone will be down shortly.”Talulah had broken parole and hadn’t attended her mandatory drug test. She had been my easiest catch of the week. I only had to drive down the drug strip to find her with a needle stabbed in her arm, half passed out from the shot. She was younger than me, and it broke my heart to see her like this.Oh, the joys of getting back into the trenches. After a long break, I did my best to return to my everyday life. The back door of the station opened, and Officer Dan and a colleague walked out to take the skip. When the woman was in custody, Dan removed her cuffs and returned them to me.“I heard you were back on the job. Christ, Max. You scared the shit out of me when you stopped showing up here! They told me you probably took a vacation, but I know you. Your job’s your life,” Dan said with
The wait was killing me. My leg impatiently shook when I sat on the chair. The lobby under the justice court building was brightly lit and warm. I had never been in that section before. If I didn’t have Moe guiding me through the separate hallway that brought us here, in the basement, I would have never suspected there was a place specifically designed for vampire laws. The fact that I was meeting the congregation was the least of my problems. My mind was on Lukas, whom I hadn’t seen since the fight with Ventura four days before. Jace didn’t want me to see him and had given me very few updates on his health, but the one news that kept bothering me was that the broken ribs were more important than we initially thought. Some had pierced his lungs and had caused damages that Jace feared Lukas would have issues healing correctly. There was also a matter about the drug Ventura and Mike had given Lukas to sedate him, which seemed to cause abnormal delays in his healing.I felt terrible becau
Ventura’s fingers tightened around my neck, and I struggled to breathe.“There goes that defiant hiss again. You’re becoming quite the little vampire. You sound just like one,” he said with a growing hatred. “Do you know how much trouble you’ve been giving me? You killed my small human army of hunters who would do my future bidding. I had a chance at a surprise attack on the Harringtons, but you blew it! You were unsuccessful at making more of yourself and serving me. Why shouldn’t I just snap your pretty neck and be done with it? All my troubles would die along with you.”My hands instinctively circled his forearm to remove some of the pressure. When I saw black spots everywhere, my grip on him lessened. I couldn’t break free, and I thought this was the end. Surprisingly, Ventura let go and grabbed the front of my vest, dragging me on my back to where Lukas and Jace were.“Pathetic girl,” Ventura spat as he dropped me beside my mates. “It doesn’t matter. Everything I need to start my
I stopped my car in front of an old abandoned warehouse on 9th Street. Many were in the sector, but just as the letter said, I knew exactly which one it was. The run-down name of the company was barely visible, but the logo of an owl still showed, reminding me of the Noctua sigil. I could be wrong, but this building seemed the right one.I walked to the warehouse, looking for an entrance. The previous owner had barricaded all the entries with pieces of wood and chains. I groaned and trudged along the exterior to find another way to gain access. When I was about to retrace my steps and search another building, I spotted a broken window on the second floor.“Great,” I mumbled exasperatingly. “As if I do parkour in my spare time.”There was a ledge on the lower window, and I noticed a gutter installed on the wall close to it. I pulled up my leather jacket sleeves and lightly ran for a jump to get a high start. I climbed the downspout until I was at level with the ledge, and I swung my bod
I strolled down the street, taking in the city’s nightly smells. After some time, I stopped and took a deep breath. The neighbourhood was silent, and only the distant sound of car horns honking reminded me that life went on while I was away. The last time I stood in front of my apartment complex, I was drugged in a cab and kidnapped.I hurried along the entrance and pushed the glass doors open. The trek up the stairs was quick, and I walked to my door to unlock it. In the two weeks I was gone, nothing had changed. My apartment had been left untouched, and the little possessions I had left were still in their place. I was surprised. I thought the vampires would have ransacked my home to find any information on me.I opened my mini-fridge and pulled out the last remaining beer bottle.I reflected on Jace, Lukas, Moe and Bea’s plan as I sat. They wanted to draw out Ventura from wherever he was hiding, and the only thing they thought would succeed was to resume my life. Ventura would try t
Jace POVI watched Max from afar. She was a small thing compared to the tall vampire she called Moe. She had been with those two since their return to the cabin, and it slightly irritated me to have to share Max with two other vampires—one werewolf was already enough.“You’re doing that thing again. Stop it,” Lukas called from behind.I turned around and smugly slouched. “What exactly am I doing?”“I’ve known you for years, Jace. I know all your telltale signs. You know something that you haven’t told anyone. Spill.”My friend’s amber eyes darkened menacingly. I sighed and pressed a hand over my face. Lukas was an annoying dog but had good intentions.“I knew the congregation had released Ventura before coming here.”Lukas watched me from a distance. His face was becoming red, but I ignored it. Why was Lukas getting angry with me?“When were you planning on telling us?”I shrugged and crossed my arms. “This morning, but I didn’t think it was important.”“You should have told us the min
Lukas and Jace’s kisses lingered on my skin before I stepped under the water. It washed away their scent on my body, and I sighed. My fingers trailed the length of my neck and hovered over my swollen lips. They still tingled from Lukas and Jace’s bites. My face heated at the memory of Jace telling me to go on top of Lukas. I had never had sex with two men at the same time, and when Lukas filled my dripping wet pussy, and Jace stretched my ass with his dick, I almost forgot how to breathe. The feeling I had in the pit of my stomach was dreadful, yet exciting. The sensation had been odd and pleasing. My skin shivered with need and all the dirty things I wanted the three of us to do. I had both of them in me, and each thrust and withdrawal had me wanting, no, almost begging for more. I couldn’t seem to get enough of them. Their cocks filled each cavity perfectly, and their rhythms were in delightful unison. It was even more thrilling when Lukas and Jace gave me the reins, and I could choo
Lukas POVThe smell of Max’s arousal woke me. I had been lightly asleep but was now fully awake, and my dick painfully swelled inside my boxers in response.I didn’t want to act on her scent because I didn’t know if she was excited for me or for Jace, who was inconveniently sleeping on Max’s other side.I needed to change my mind. Anything was better than thinking of everything I wanted to do to Max.I thought back to what had happened before I went to sleep. After furiously running in wolf form, I returned to the cabin and found Jace waiting beside Max’s sleeping shape on the bed. He had gotten here much faster than I wanted, and I despised every second of him brushing his light fingers against the pale white skin of her bare legs.No amount of yelling and violent disagreements could remove Jace’s bond with Max. She was as much his as she was mine. Jace and I both made our claims, and the rest was history. We would be there for her, but Jace and I would need to have a more profound di
