But what happened the summer before their freshman year in high school was the turning point. Quinn was very popular. His square jawline, brown, wispy hair and general smart ass attitude had won him a legion of followers. Chapter 1
Emerson. Emerson’s head was smashed up against the window of her moms SUV as the air conditioner blasted her long white blonde hair around in her face. She caught herself wondering why it was so hot when the summers in this town were supposedly mild, or so said the weather when she looked it up before the move. Andover Oregon was already not what she thought it would be, and they were just pulling into the town. “I think we’re really going to like it here” Carol Parker sing songed cutting the silence of the car. They’d been driving all day from their previous home in Southern California. “Look at that mountain mom!” A voice from the backseat yelled. Emerson rolled her eyes. Thinking her little brother Sawyer’s nap had lasted all of 20 minutes. At 7 years old the boy was entirely too excited about this, and anything and everything new or different. He thought of this move as an adventure. A fun family quest they were going on. Emerson thought she should be happy for him, after ev

Chapter 2
Emerson. After pulling away from the light they drove through around five more blocks until Em noticed her mom veering left and taking a road that drove into more of a rural area. The lake was still to their left and Emerson found herself wishing wherever the house was that they could see the mountains and the water from there. The moon now shining in the sky made a beautiful reflection in the water. They continued down the road which became winding and more secluded as the trees began to get thicker on each side of the road. “Shit mom how much further?!” Sawyer was getting tired of riding in the car apparently. “No cussing!” Her mom yelled back but Emerson felt the beginnings of a smile at her brothers funny language. “And not far” Five minutes later they turned left again. Emerson was sure they were just driving around the lake and wondered if they couldn’t have bipassed the town altogether and come in from the other way. But then you wouldn’t have seen the boy. A voice s

Emerson. The new house Sawyer was a lot of things and usually speechless wasn’t one of them. However when their mom opened the front door and they stepped into their new home, he sat there with his mouth dropped wide open and no words coming out. Emerson wasn’t much better as she too couldn’t seem to form a complete thought. They walked into an entry way that opened up into the most beautiful space she had ever seen. All wood and brick with windows for walls along the back and soft lighting from lamps and the over head lights made the space look not only beautiful but eclectic, and something out of one of her moms popular home magazines. The main living space was two steps down from the entry. A beautiful living room with a huge brick fireplace that covered the entire wall was to the right. Straight in front of her the floor to ceiling windows opened up to a huge outdoor deck over looking the lake and mountains and forest to the back. To the left was the huge amazing kitchen complet

Chapter 4
Quinn QuinnQuinn wasn’t planning on going out that night. It was Saturday and school was starting soon……senior year and then he could get out of this stupid fucking town. The memories were suffocating him. He had planned on staying in with Finley until she called to let him know she was going to stay with her dad in Eugene, the next town over, that night. Quinn decided he would meet the boys. The impending date of his brother getting out of jail was also coming up. He needed a fight so he called up Elias, Chase, Greyson, and Asher, and told them to meet him at the theater. Quinn went to the garage not bothering to tell his dad he was leaving. He looked around the vast space of the ridiculously large garage and settled on his brand new hummer. He had bought it at the beginning of summer all with his own money. He had been saving from his fights and to be honest it wasn’t that hard since he always won. There was a lot of money in illegal fighting rings. Quinn was well known in

Chapter 5
Emerson After a good nights sleep in her new bed Em woke refreshed and feeling lighter than she had in a long time. They spent the morning unpacking the rest of their belongings and clothes that they had brought with them. By lunch time the three of them were fairly settled in. A horn honking caused them to all look up. “Must be your car Em” mom called to her. Em ran out and saw her car sitting there in the driveway. She ran over to inspect it and make sure everything looked okay and nothing was damaged. While she was standing there she heard voices coming from the house next door. She looked up at the huge modern house next to hers where she saw a girl and boy about her age. They seemed to be arguing with each other. Em didn’t mean to stare but the girl looked up and saw her and started waving. Emerson sheepishly waved back, knowing she’d been caught. A couple hours later Em and Sawyer were swimming in their new pool when mom came out and yelled at her that she had a visi

Chapter 6
QuinnMonday morning rolled around and Quinn was in the worst mood. School was starting and he was beyond ready to be done with it and this town for good. He had indeed ended up fighting the other night and winning - but he was still sore from it. Some of the gang from Eugene had come down and Quinn happened to be there and ready. The problem was the boys from Eugene were not boys at all but men. And Quinn was good but he was still just 18. Some of these guys were pretty big. They were more experienced than a lot of the people he ended up in the ring with, and harder to beat. Quinn never came out of a fight unscathed. Some of the Eugene bunch had actually taken mixed martial arts for years and sort of knew what they were doing. The result was a lot of bruises, cuts and the occasional broken ribs and busted lips. Therefore it took Quinn a few days to fully recover. He had a cut on his eye and lip and some bruised ribs. So he was sore as shit when he got up and left for schoo

Chapter 7
Emerson Well this day was shaping up to be a complete mind fuck. When she had gotten up this morning, Em felt a new sense of peace. Starting a new school her senior year wasn’t in her plans. She was however so grateful for Aspen already. Her new BFF had called her last night to talk about what they’d be wearing today. She had settled on some jean shorts and a lightweight sweater. The weather was cooler here in the mornings than it was in California, and luckily this school didn’t have much of a dress code. She had fully planned on driving her car and dropping her brother off at his new school on the way. But her mom said she would take care of that this week before she got her new permanent schedule at the hospital. That way Em could ride with her new friends, and her mom could have a little extra time in the mornings with her brother. Her brother who- by the way- apparently had no qualms whatsoever about starting at a new school and spent the morning smacking his pancakes an

Chapter 8
EmThat afternoon Em went with Sylvia and the girls to the dance studio, aptly named “Tush”. She talked with the coach , Maria, about starting. At first Maria said she would have to try out, but then after a few minutes of conversation about her past training she told her she was on the team. They would start practice on Thursday after school. On the way out Em noticed a sign on the door, and told the girls she would be right back. Five minutes later she skipped out to the car grinning. “What just happened?” Aspen asked her. “I just got a job”. Emerson sing songed. She was going to work at the studio Monday through Wednesday helping with the books and secretarial duties while Maria taught dance to younger kids. She was even going to help her with the dance lessons. “Ewwww why did you go and do a thing like that?” Mickey wanted to know. But she needed to stay busy as possible. When she had too much free time her mind started going over board and all the horrible memories sta

Chapter 9
EmThe rest of the week flew by as Emerson settled in her new home. She rode to school with the twins every day, promising next week they’d take her car. Classes were fairly easy and Emerson had grown to love her last class in the library. She enjoyed getting lost in all the books and had time to work on any homework. She had spent the afternoons at the dance studio, learning how to take care of the books and payments at Tush. Sylvia accompanied her most days and she manned the desk at times Maria let ‘Em help teach the littles, one thing Sylvia refused to do. Maria had praised her dancing skills already and told her she would be such an asset to their group. On Thursday Emerson got to meet the rest of the girls in her age group. Sylvia was there with her thank goodness. She was quickly becoming one of Em’s dearest friends. Sylvia had a quiet calming energy that put her at ease. She had a good heart, Emerson could tell. Mickey was also becoming a good friend. Emerson foun
