Budget meeting

Gabriel was sitting on the front steps of his cabin a cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in the other. He offered me a beer as I approached him.

"I thought you said this was a dry camp" I asked dubiously.

"It is," he extended his hand to offer me the beer again and I took it. "It'll take the edge off after your doctor thing this morning," he said quietly. I stared at him in wonderment, these were the most non-work related words he had ever spoken to me. I opened the can and took a long drink, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. I felt his gaze on me as he took a drag of his cigarette. He motioned for me to have a seat next to him on the step and I obliged. "Supper was excellent," he said simply, his gaze shifting to a squirrel running between trees just five feet away from us.

"Uhm, thanks" I replied, shyly. We sat in silence for a few minutes drinking our beer watching squirrels darting around. He finally took a long drag of his cigarette before putting it out and dumping it into his empty beer can. I took a last drink of my own beer and followed him inside the cabin.

His desk was neatly organized with labeled dividers and shelves, binders and books filed by height and neatly held back with a no nonsense metal bookend. He had a pencil, blue pen and an eraser neatly lined up next to his laptop. He had the large desk calendars where he had crossed off the days gone by and written several notes and timestamps in each of the squares; I spied that he had a 9pm meeting with Sheri that night. The desk was free of dust but that was where the tidiness ended. His clothes were sprawled out all over the other side of the room, his sheets were a tangled mess on his bed and he had a few dozen empty cans of beer strewn across the place. I took this all in while he watched me with a serious expression, not bothering apologizing or making up excuses as to why the place looked like a dump. I supposed not many people came here anyways, but it was such a stark contrast with how he presented himself, I never would have guessed he was such a slob.

"You've gone over the expected budget again for the 2nd month in a row" he said, pointing to the cell with the red numbers on his laptop screen. "You're going to have to figure out how to bring the cost down a little," he said calmly.

"Well,” I began defensively, “Janice is leaving, so we will be saving on her pay, the students salary should be paid in part by the government"

"Yeah but they fuck up a lot more too, so I’m sure that will come out of the groceries won’t it?" he retorted coldly.

"I suppose, but I will be with them the whole time so I should be able to step in if things go awry"

"Is there anything we can cut out of the meal budget?"

"Absolutely not," I interjected. "Your men are well fed and I really think it’s a bonus for you. If you cut from their grocery budget I don’t think they would be very happy"

"Don’t flatter yourself, Miss Saunders" he turned to look at me and his dark brooding eyes looked right into mine. My breath caught in my throat, my heart sped up and I had a nagging urge to run away to my cabin and hide under my comforter.

"I'm not cutting my budget" I said regaining some control over myself.

"I can find someone else who isn’t going to cost me so much," he said, his gaze unflinching.

"Then do it.” I dared him “I can find somewhere else to work too!" I fought hard against the tears welling up in my eyes. My anger was directly attached to my tear ducts and it enraged me. Although I did have other job offers I really enjoyed it there… well whenever I didn’t have to deal with this asshole.

"This is your budget for the month and if you go over it again this month, I’ll deduct it from your salary"

"If you touch a single penny of my measly salary, I will leave you at the mercy of the students. Have fun eating pasta and frozen vegetable every fucking day. Oh right, you don’t even eat here so you could care less what your men are eating."

"Harper," he warned.

"Don’t Harper me," I continued, tears still ever so threatening. He looked at me with a glint of amusement in his eyes, all hostility gone from him. "Fine, I’ll put an extra two-thousand dollars buffer to cover your spending, but please try to respect it"

"I'll see what I can do", I said through gritted teeth. "Are we done?"

"Let me know when you get your next appointments, I will arrange for someone to bring you to town," he said softly, returning his gaze to his budget spreadsheet. I frowned in confusion at him.

"Thank you" I stood there waiting for more but he dismissed me with a hand. I turned to leave frustrated by our exchange and heard him leave his cabin too. I looked back as he jumped effortlessly into his truck and drove off. Rumors had it he often visited girlfriends in town. He really was a womanizer.

I returned to the kitchen to make sure everything was done. Janice was finishing up the dishes and Matteo was mopping the floors. I grabbed a dry towel and dried what Janice hadn’t gotten to yet.

"You look like a flustered mess" she said with great interest, "do spill."

"It's nothing Janice, drop it" I said dryly. Matteo walked me over to my cabin and we chatted for a few minutes before he left.

As the cooks, Janice and I were privy to our own cabin whereas the men had to share with 4 or 5 others. It wasn’t a very big cabin, but in all honesty we only needed it to sleep. Once Janie was gone I would only share it with other female staff. I took a quick shower before getting into bed. I tried to read my book but I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

I was on breakfast duty the next morning and got up at 4:30 to get it underway. As I opened the door of my cabin, I was blinded by bright headlights. I squinted trying to block the light with my arm, the lights dimmed and I recognized Gabriel’s truck. He jumped out and I watched as he walked over to his cabin wearing the same clothes as last night. I sniggered under my breath and walked over to the kitchen. I cooked some bacon, sausages and eggs and by 5:30 the men had started to walk into the dining hall. They were much quieter at this time of day yawning and loading up on coffee while they ate. Janice showed up once breakfast was done around 7 to help clean up.

“I’ve got to bring these papers over to Mr. Mason, Janice, I’ll be right back” I said as I grabbed the following weeks’s produce order sheets. I walked over to his cabin and knocked tentatively on the door. After several minutes of not receiving any answer I pushed the door slowly, planning on dropping off the forms on his desk and leaving immediately. A movement caught my eye and I looked over to Gabriel’s bed where he was asleep, lying on his back snoring lightly. A thin sheet covered some of his mostly naked form and I took a moment to appreciate how peaceful and absolutely gorgeous he was when he wasn’t frowning. A strange heat travelled through my body and settled in my pants, I took this as a sign to hightail my way out of there before he woke up.

Once back in the safety of the kitchen I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. Flustered and confused by my reaction to a sleeping Gabriel Mason, I tried to distract myself by making snacks and desserts before moving on to lunch time prep. Janice and I worked in perfect harmony while listening to some of the CDs I had brought. By 11:30 we were all set to receive the men for lunch, but they wouldn’t be coming until 12.

"I'll run some lasagna to the boss" she called, serving out a huge portion along with a couple slices of garlic bread.

"Does he need that much?" I whined. She shrugged as she pushed through the door to his office. "Better you than me" I mumbled under my breath, but I felt a pang of jealousy that she was going to see him and not me. This new found interest in my boss worried me. Maybe I was tired and simply needed a nap.

The rest of the week went by uneventfully and I didn’t see Gabriel again. I drove out with Janice on Friday and stayed at her place for the weekend. I had to get to the mall and replenish my stores of soaps, books and DVDs. I didn't expect to have much free time, but on the off chance that I was sent an excellent student I made sure to be prepared.

Gabriel picked me up from Janice’s house, his truck was full of the groceries I couldn’t get from our vendors. He came out to greet Janice and I as we said our goodbyes. "I'm going to miss you so much this week!" I whined as I hugged Janice. "I'll miss you too!" I grabbed my suitcase full of fresh laundered clothes and handed it to Gabriel. He grabbed the bag in one hand and extended his other hand out to help me get in the truck. I ignored his hand and did the best I could to get in the truck gracefully. "Did you have a good weekend?" he asked, buckling his seatbelt in and I was startled at his attempt to make small talk, he was more of a “Still waters run deep” kind of guy. "It was o

A chime indicated the number change on the screen and I made my way to the chair across from the receptionist. "Health card?" she asked and began typing furiously. "You haven't been to this hospital before?" I shook my head. "Okay, you'll have to fill out this form so we can open a chart for you here. • Betrayed   Maria

Maria showed up on Sunday night, she was a sweet girl around my age who was eager to do every single thing I asked. She was very helpful but still lacked confidence in her skills. She always asked a million questions to make sure she was on the right track or doing things exactly the way I liked them. "You have to make some decisions by yourself" I told her on Thursday after she asked me to try the salads she had put together to tell her what was missing. She looked hurt at my comment and I felt awful. But I knew she had to grow a spine and make decisions on her own if she was going to make it in the real world. "Listen, Maria, I’m not trying to be mean, but next week you are going to be the one bossing me around. I want you to be making decisions. I will be here to support you, but you need to assert yourself." She nodded at me, her big brown eyes full of tears.

I woke up late the next morning when my phone was ringing loudly. "Hello?" I answered groggily. "Harper, can you be ready to go in 30 minutes, I have an emergency to attend to at the camp" Gabriel said quickly. "Uh huh, 30 minutes" I replied. "You'll be ready?" "Yup" I said, closing my eyes. 10 more minutes I thought to myself as I fell asleep. I was rudely awoken by a loud urgent banging at the door. "HARPER!" Gabriel yelled from the other side. I frantically looked for my phone and saw that I had 8 missed calls in the last 15 minutes. Shit! Luckily all of my things were contained already, I just had to grab a pair of jeans and a sh

When I had left for New Brunswick in the spring I had to let my apartment go. I hadn’t planned on coming back so soon, but I didn’t want to be held back by an empty apartment if something came up. I had graduated from the local community college in my town and worked at a few restaurants before getting a bit of a break with Gabriel’s company. The job was hard to fill as it was in an isolated area with little to no means of external communication. It was certainly not a family friendly kind of job either, I had just been gone for a better part of the year with only weekends off. Regardless, I had no one tying me down, and I found it liberating to be so far away from the outside world. I had made some real good friends there during the season and I was seriously planning on returning. I dreamt of Gabriel for the first month I had returned home, looking back at him with rose coloured glasses and replaying our weekend together had given me a different perspec

I spotted Gabriel before he saw me, he was pacing around the arrival gate deep in conversation on his phone, his frown ever so present on his face. My heart fluttered when he looked up towards me and a large grin formed on his face. He promptly hung up and gathered me in his arms in a warm welcoming hug. I was shocked by his reception based on the conversations we had in the last few months.“You look great Harper,” he said, checking me out while holding at arms length.“Thanks, you don’t look too shabby yourself” I replied. He had shaved his dark curls in favor of a buzzcut, and he sported a short beard . I had never seen him with facial hair longer than a day or two’s worth, but it looked good on him. It even made him look a little younger than 37. He placed an arm around my shoulder and carried the small suitcase with all of my measly belongings to his truck. We drove to his house with the AC on full

*Rather explicit content ahead*We spent another quiet ride together, but despite the tension in the cab I was excited to get to the camp. I smiled fondly at my old cabin and the dining hall as we approached them. I wasted no time jumping out of the truck and grabbing the groceries from the back. I brought everything inside and put away the items the way I liked them before heading to my cabin. I half expected to see my kitchen helper but my cabin was empty. The room I had been using the previous season was already occupied, so I shifted all my things to the other, smaller bedroom. Despite being a creature of habit, I wasn’t overly upset about the switch of rooms. There was a knock at the door and I turned to see Gabriel standing on the other side of the screen door.“Come in” I said, beckoning him with a finger. He looked around the cabin silently for a moment. “Are you ok?” I asked.

  • Betrayed   Family Vacation

Lane and her boyfriend Alexy, along with Matteo and his wife, were joining us on our vacation, having rented the cottages next to ours for the week. Lane, who was 33 weeks pregnant and glowing, had been visiting us at least every 2 months for the first three years after Emily was born until she met one of Gabriel’s employees one summer and fell madly in love with him. Since my mom had also met someone back home and was living with him, Lane felt less guilt about moving out to New Brunswick. Her and her boyfriend were living in a beautiful home only 10 minutes drive away from Gabriel and I.Matteo’s kids were all grown now and rarely followed their parents around anymore. He and his wife were enjoying their first solo vacation in years, but had decided to spend it with our family. Being godparents to Felix, they tried to be as present in our lives as they could.

“I. don’t. Want. to. Go!” Emily shouted, clearly exhausted by our little family vacation. We had pulled up to the Champlain Mall in Dieppe to pick up a few things I had forgotten at home before we made it to the cottage we had rented by the ocean another 45 minutes away.“I can stay with her while you get what you need, baby,” Gabriel offered, the most patient out of the two of us. With a lump in my throat and trying to keep the tears at bay I nodded. “You can leave Felix in the truck too if you want” he offered looking over to our 4 year old with a grin. Felix looked so much like Hendrix it was freaky and the two, despite the age difference, were thick as thieves.“Do you want to stay with daddy or come with mommy, Fee?” I asked.“Daddy!” he exclaimed.“Okay I will be back as soon as possible” I said, unbuckling my seat belt. I watched the people milling about from the dining room window, there were 30 or so people waiting in the backyard while rock music played on. I couldn’t see Gabriel from where I was standing but I could just imagine what he looked like in an outfit similar to Hendrix’s. I could hardly contain my excitement at seeing him.I admired Lane’s beautiful set up and hoped it wasn’t going to rain, as the skies were grey with clouds. Lane had strategically hung white sheer linen in some of the trees and placed lanterns as decorations. There were rows of white chairs occupied by the guests and white flower petals down the would-be aisle. I spotted a makeshift bar with huge ‘Beer and Whiskey’ signs hanging above it and laughed. Of course Gabriel would make sure the guests were well ‘watered’. The backyard had a very magical feeling about it.

With everyone’s help and support the first week of Emily’s life went on without a hitch. I went on a few emotional roller coasters and woke up soaked in sweat a few times at night. But in all I couldn’t ask for a better baby. Emily was easily content, sleeping most of the day and only waking for feeds and diaper changes. My mom took on the role of grandmother very well, she rocked, washed, and cooed at Emily every chance she had. Janice cooked up a storm for everyone staying with us and froze several meals for when we were on our own again. Lane and I spent most of Emily’s feeding time in my bed going over wedding details and ideas.“I trust you, Lane” I told her for the millionth time, “do whatever you want!” Lane took a deep exasperated breath and let it out slowly, gently stroking Emily’s head.

Not that he would say such things, but I was disheartened by the way I looked and felt. I knew it was temporary but I was getting anxious to meet my baby. • Betrayed   Take Two

By December Gabriel and I had fully returned to our old routine. Though the pain of losing a baby never quite goes away, it becomes a little more bearable as the days go on.Sally had asked me to return to the diner for the winter, but I got an even more enticing job as an instructor at the community college. I would deliver a certain amount of theory content during the fall and winter semesters and in the summer I would take on the students at Gabriel’s work sites in order to give them hands-on practice. After a long and thorough conversation with Gabriel I sadly declined Sally’s offer and took on the college job. I loved having a 9-4 job that allowed me to be at home in the evening. Gabriel had secured a few building jobs around town and was also home every night. He frequently assured me he didn’t find life with me dull and always looked forward to coming home and seeing me each night. Our new house was everything I co
