I stared down at my brown and orange stained fingers in fascination while I was waiting to see the specialist. Due to the nature of my job, my hands were dry and cracked and had a tendency to absorb color from the food I handled. It was incredibly difficult to get it out. Some helpful people had advised me that if I simply took the time to moisturize my hands, I wouldn’t have this problem. As if I had time for that! My hands were too busy with food prep, and dishwashing to take the time to let the lotion soak into my dry cracked hands. My nails were kept short, I didn’t wear rings and I washed my hands about a hundred times per day, they were definitely not sexy. My right hand had a tough raised callus just under my index finger from the constant contact with the metal of my knife while both arms had various burn marks from moments of inattention while cooking. Some of my knuckles had scars from the times the cheese slipped against the grater catching the edge of my knuckle onto the sharp blade.I was lucky to have all my fingers; I was a little too careless in the kitchen sometimes.
"Miss Harper Saunders" a manly voice called out. I looked up at the man who had summoned me, a warm crooked smile crossed his face as he invited me into the office. I walked over to him slowly and sat in the exam chair. "My name is Dr. Helm, what can I do for you today Miss Saunders?" he asked as he gave me his full attention. I swallowed hard, feeling nervous.
"I have this lump here," I said pointing at my neck. The doctor’s eyes narrowed as she lifted my chin and touched the lump gently.
"Hmmm, so you do," he said, his eyebrows furrowed. "When did you notice it first?" he asked, turning away from me and walking towards a cupboard against the wall.
"About 2 years ago, I was hoping it would go away on its own, but after a year I consulted my family doctor about it, and well, I've been waiting a year to see you" I finished.
"Yes, the wait times are a little long I'm afraid, there aren’t very many of us in this field" he smiled apologetically. He was holding a long hosed instrument and pushed my head back against the chair’s headrest. "Does it interfere with your breathing or swallowing?" he asked squeezed a thick clear liquid onto the end of the tube.
"No"
"Do you feel a pressure in your throat?"
"No"
"That's good then. So what I’m going to do is put this scope in your nostril and have a look in your throat ok? To make sure it isn't obstructing anything" he explained. I nodded, not seeing that I had much choice in the matter. "Here we go, you’ll feel a bit of pressure" he announced as he pushed the hard black tube into my nose, "and now your eyes will water,” he continued as the burning sensation caused my eyes to water. “You should be feeling a little burning sensation” he confirmed “and we’re there!" he paused for a moment examining my throat through his scope. I held my breath and kept my eyes squeezed shut through the whole ordeal, the sensation of a scope up the nose was quite unpleasant. The doctor gently pulled out the scope and handed me a tissue to wipe my runny nose. "Well the good news is that it's not obstructing your airway, but I'm going to request an ultrasound and a biopsy to further investigate this lump. When I get the results I will get you to come back to my office or I will call you. I'm sure it's nothing" he reassured me with a smile. I left my work phone number with the secretary as I made my way out of the office.
My boss, Gabriel Mason, was waiting for me in the parking lot. I opened the door to his lifted truck and reached for the handle to help prop myself up. He watched as I pulled myself into the seat ungracefully but said nothing.
"Sorry it took so long," I said, hating that I even had to ask for a ride there.
He shrugged indifferently. "I went by the store and got all the things you wrote on the list, did you need to get anything else?" he asked in a slow deep voice.
"No, I should be good for the week. Uhm, I hope it's okay that I gave the doctor your office number. He is supposed to do a follow up sometime in the next few weeks and my cell phone doesn’t always work at the camp” I rambled on quickly as if I was trying to tear off a bandaid. He nodded at this but said nothing. I couldn’t help fidget with my fingers as we made our way out of the city and back into the work camp deep in the woods. Since beginning to work for Mr. Mason, he had always intimidated me. I wasn’t sure if it was because of his quiet nature, his reputation, or because I just didn’t know him very well.
Gabriel brought most of the groceries in for me as my kitchen helper, Janice helped me put them away.
"So?" Janice asked as soon as Gabriel was gone, "What did the doc say?"
"Not a whole lot, he has more tests to run first, but he doesn’t think it's serious" I replied, rubbing at the lump in my throat absentmindedly. It was barely visible but just knowing it was there really bothered me. I had done some research on goiters and the images that popped up were downright scary looking, I wanted to get this taken care of before it got out of control.
“Well that's good” she said with a genuine smile on her face, “How awkward was it to be with Mr. Grumpy pants?” she asked, referring to Gabriel.
"It went as well as one could expect," I grinned at her. "He put on the radio and we didn’t have a single exchange on the way there and back" I replied as I examined the fridge. She raised her eyebrows and threw her head back.
"Gosh, that must have been so boring!" she groaned, "Did he make you listen to Metallica?"
"Yes, actually that’s what we listened to. So what is there left for me to prepare for lunch?" I asked, looking around the kitchen and peeking into the dining hall.
“Everything is ready, boss!" she replied cheerfully. As if on cue I heard a rumble of voices approaching the dining hall. The water faucet was turned on as the steady buzz of men’s chatter came through the kitchen.
"Good afternoon Miss Harper" most of them greeted me as they grabbed a plate, cutlery and napkins. Janice and I took the lids off of the buffet pans as each man served themselves. Lunch consisted of mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, pork chops and gravy. Those who didn’t like it had the option to eat the previous day’s leftovers or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Only a few of the men were extremely picky, most were just grateful for a hot lunch every day. One by one, they filled their plate and headed to the long table in the dining hall. Once the 40 or so men had served themselves Janice and I would grab a plate for ourselves and wolf it down before the dishes started to accumulate in the sink. Janice would then clear off the table and clean the dining hall while I put the food away and cleaned off my work area. We would both do the dishes and take an hour’s break before starting on supper’s prep. It was hard tedious work but it was something I enjoyed immensely.
"Miss Saunders" a low husky voice called. A thrill ran through me as I turned to see Gabriel standing at the door.
"Yes?" I asked cautiously.
"Are you available to go over the books for the month’s end tonight?" he asked, his eyes stern, making me wish I could wipe away his deep scowl.
"Yeah, absolutely Mr. Mason, I can meet you in your office at 8?" I said. He nodded and left the dining hall without another word.
I turned to look at Janice who was fanning herself with her hand, pretending to swoon. She was deeply enamoured with our boss.
"It’s too bad he’s such a womanizer, he would have been a perfect match for you," she said.
"The heat is clearly getting to you" I laughed, rolling my eyes and shaking my head at her.
"What? You don't think he is gorgeous? I mean if you look past the grumpiness and all"
"Deep, deep, deep past the grumpiness" I replied giggling.
"You don't think he’s hot?" she asked in disbelief.
"He's good looking but he is way too old for me" I returned
"He's younger than me," she scoffed.
"You forget I'm only 22, and you told me he was the same age as you the other day" I retorted and she looked at me in amazement.
"I did forget you were still wet behind the ears" she giggled as she passed me the last pan to dry. "I'll see you at three" she called leaving the kitchen. I knew she would head to her room and have a nap until then. I usually liked to read by the river a few minutes walk from the camp. It was mostly quiet, only hearing the heavy machinery occasionally. It was quite a peaceful spot and on days like today the place was filled with warm sunlight piercing through the thick woodland canopy. I basked in the sunlight while flipping through my book pushing all my worries away for the hour.
Mr. Mason owned a large construction company and this current job site involved building some sort of overpass and would take up to three years to complete. Janice had been the head cook the previous year but she did not enjoy the isolation of the campsite. This season, as a favour to Mr. Mason, she had agreed to train me for a few months and fill in if the need arose.
Janice and I worked efficiently in the kitchen, she was my favorite person to have around. We never got in each other’s way and it was like she could read my mind. She handed me ingredients and tools before I even had to ask for them. We were a well oiled machine. Unfortunately this was her last week and I was going to be taking in students for the rest of the summer. I was excited at the prospect of teaching and helping young people learn efficiency in the kitchen but it was most likely going to be a lot more work for me. With Janice we were able to alternate breakfast duty so the other person could sleep in, but this was likely going to be impossible to do with students until they became more proficient as they needed constant supervision meaning I had to work harder.
Supper was usually a more subdued affair, that night we had prepared chicken stew with rolls. We even had time to sit with the men and talk. Some of them would offer to help with the dishes and we never refused them. It was nice to see that they appreciated us enough to help out and give us some time off.
I sat on the bench next to my friend Matteo who was already working on his third roll. He looked up at me and flashed me one of his warm smiles. He put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me in for a side hug.
"Amazing food again tonight Miss Saunders" he said between bites.
"Don't call me that" I scolded him, "It makes me feel old!"
The dining hall got quiet as someone sat to my right, I turned expecting to see Janice but it was Gabriel. He rarely ate in the dining hall with the rest of the men. We usually made him a plate and delivered it to his office where he dealt with paperwork.
He had showered before coming in for supper as most of the men did. His dark hair was slightly damp and falling over his forehead. I caught a whiff of woodsy spices as he sat himself next to me. He nodded at me and reached across my plate for a roll, his arm grazing mine as he pulled it back. I could see Janice 's eyes widen in surprise across from me as she witnessed the quick touch. My face heated up, likely turning red. Gabriel made me incredibly nervous with his authoritative ways. He was an intimidating man and it felt wrong that I was sitting here at that moment because I should have been in the kitchen. The chatter picked up again in the hall as my boss ate silently.
"So what did your doc say?" Matteo asked. We had spent a lot of time getting to know each other since coming here in the spring, other than Janice, Matteo was my closest friend here and we told each other almost everything. He was a First Nation and lived in the Madawaska reserve in northern New Brunswick. Though he was married with kids, he chose to spend most of his time off at the camp to keep an eye on things while Gabriel was away.
I told Matteo the same thing I had told Janice earlier about the doctor's appointment. His look was full of concern for me and he reached for my shoulder again to give me a squeeze. "I’m sure it will be ok. Is this doctor any good?"
"He's an ears nose and throat doctor, so I assume he knows what he is doing." I shrugged.
"Miss Saunders" a low voice rang to my right, "is there any chance you can meet me in my office now, I have to go to town tonight, so the sooner we can get this done the sooner I can go."
Janice snorted into her glass of water across from me and I gave her an annoyed glare.
"Um," I started
"I'll help Janice," Matteo said, tugging at my sleeve.
"Thanks!" I turned to him in relief.
"As soon as you’re done meet me in my office" he got up with his bowl and cutlery in hand and made his exit through the kitchen. Chilling dread came over me at the thought of spending the next hour with him. This was only my second budget meeting and the last one had not gone well. He had given me several reproachful looks as I tried to justify my spending and it had made me uncomfortable. He had never refused me anything but he never seemed pleased with my requests either. I took my time finishing my meal and when I had exhausted all forms of procrastination and couldn’t put it off any longer I made my way to his office.
Gabriel was sitting on the front steps of his cabin a cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in the other. He offered me a beer as I approached him. "I thought you said this was a dry camp" I asked dubiously. "It is," he extended his hand to offer me the beer again and I took it. "It'll take the edge off after your doctor thing this morning," he said quietly. I stared at him in wonderment, these were the most non-work related words he had ever spoken to me. I opened the can and took a long drink, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. I felt his gaze on me as he took a drag of his cigarette. He motioned for me to have a seat next to him on the step and I obliged. "Supper was excellent," he said simply, his gaze shifting to a squirrel running between trees just five feet away from us. "Uhm, thanks" I replied, shyly. We sat in silence for a few minutes drinking our beer watching squirrels darting around. He finally took a long drag of his cigarette before p
Gabriel picked me up from Janice’s house, his truck was full of the groceries I couldn’t get from our vendors. He came out to greet Janice and I as we said our goodbyes. "I'm going to miss you so much this week!" I whined as I hugged Janice. "I'll miss you too!" I grabbed my suitcase full of fresh laundered clothes and handed it to Gabriel. He grabbed the bag in one hand and extended his other hand out to help me get in the truck. I ignored his hand and did the best I could to get in the truck gracefully. "Did you have a good weekend?" he asked, buckling his seatbelt in and I was startled at his attempt to make small talk, he was more of a “Still waters run deep” kind of guy. "It was o
"Do you have an appointment, Miss?" an elderly gentleman in a teal blazer asked. "Hi, yes I do," I smiled. He led me to a number reel and handed me a piece of paper with a number. "You can sit here dear, and when they call your number you can go see the receptionist. Have your cards ready and have a nice day" he said walking towards another helpless soul. A chime indicated the number change on the screen and I made my way to the chair across from the receptionist. "Health card?" she asked and began typing furiously. "You haven't been to this hospital before?" I shook my head. "Okay, you'll have to fill out this form so we can open a chart for you here. When you are done you can come right back here and I will register you okay?" She handed me a clipboard with a pen attached to it and I fil
Maria showed up on Sunday night, she was a sweet girl around my age who was eager to do every single thing I asked. She was very helpful but still lacked confidence in her skills. She always asked a million questions to make sure she was on the right track or doing things exactly the way I liked them. "You have to make some decisions by yourself" I told her on Thursday after she asked me to try the salads she had put together to tell her what was missing. She looked hurt at my comment and I felt awful. But I knew she had to grow a spine and make decisions on her own if she was going to make it in the real world. "Listen, Maria, I’m not trying to be mean, but next week you are going to be the one bossing me around. I want you to be making decisions. I will be here to support you, but you need to assert yourself." She nodded at me, her big brown eyes full of tears.
I woke up late the next morning when my phone was ringing loudly. "Hello?" I answered groggily. "Harper, can you be ready to go in 30 minutes, I have an emergency to attend to at the camp" Gabriel said quickly. "Uh huh, 30 minutes" I replied. "You'll be ready?" "Yup" I said, closing my eyes. 10 more minutes I thought to myself as I fell asleep. I was rudely awoken by a loud urgent banging at the door. "HARPER!" Gabriel yelled from the other side. I frantically looked for my phone and saw that I had 8 missed calls in the last 15 minutes. Shit! Luckily all of my things were contained already, I just had to grab a pair of jeans and a sh
We spent Friday night eating McDonalds and watching Die Hard. I had fallen asleep before the movie was over and was barely aware that Gabriel covered me with a blanket before going into his bedroom.I was awoken by the smell of coffee and breakfast wraps on Saturday morning. Gabriel and I ate in silence next to each other at the island counter. My fingers were itching to grab my phone and scroll through facebook to break the awkwardness of being with Gabriel."I have a huge favour to ask," Gabriel said, finally breaking the silence."What's that?" I asked, relieved to be speaking."Do you think you can make lasagna for supper?" he asked, a tinge of pink forming over his face working hard not to smile. He looked like a little boy asking for m
When I had left for New Brunswick in the spring I had to let my apartment go. I hadn’t planned on coming back so soon, but I didn’t want to be held back by an empty apartment if something came up. I had graduated from the local community college in my town and worked at a few restaurants before getting a bit of a break with Gabriel’s company. The job was hard to fill as it was in an isolated area with little to no means of external communication. It was certainly not a family friendly kind of job either, I had just been gone for a better part of the year with only weekends off. Regardless, I had no one tying me down, and I found it liberating to be so far away from the outside world. I had made some real good friends there during the season and I was seriously planning on returning. I dreamt of Gabriel for the first month I had returned home, looking back at him with rose coloured glasses and replaying our weekend together had given me a different perspec
I spotted Gabriel before he saw me, he was pacing around the arrival gate deep in conversation on his phone, his frown ever so present on his face. My heart fluttered when he looked up towards me and a large grin formed on his face. He promptly hung up and gathered me in his arms in a warm welcoming hug. I was shocked by his reception based on the conversations we had in the last few months.“You look great Harper,” he said, checking me out while holding at arms length.“Thanks, you don’t look too shabby yourself” I replied. He had shaved his dark curls in favor of a buzzcut, and he sported a short beard . I had never seen him with facial hair longer than a day or two’s worth, but it looked good on him. It even made him look a little younger than 37. He placed an arm around my shoulder and carried the small suitcase with all of my measly belongings to his truck. We drove to his house with the AC on full
Lane and her boyfriend Alexy, along with Matteo and his wife, were joining us on our vacation, having rented the cottages next to ours for the week. Lane, who was 33 weeks pregnant and glowing, had been visiting us at least every 2 months for the first three years after Emily was born until she met one of Gabriel’s employees one summer and fell madly in love with him. Since my mom had also met someone back home and was living with him, Lane felt less guilt about moving out to New Brunswick. Her and her boyfriend were living in a beautiful home only 10 minutes drive away from Gabriel and I.Matteo’s kids were all grown now and rarely followed their parents around anymore. He and his wife were enjoying their first solo vacation in years, but had decided to spend it with our family. Being godparents to Felix, they tried to be as present in our lives as they could.
“I. don’t. Want. to. Go!” Emily shouted, clearly exhausted by our little family vacation. We had pulled up to the Champlain Mall in Dieppe to pick up a few things I had forgotten at home before we made it to the cottage we had rented by the ocean another 45 minutes away.“I can stay with her while you get what you need, baby,” Gabriel offered, the most patient out of the two of us. With a lump in my throat and trying to keep the tears at bay I nodded. “You can leave Felix in the truck too if you want” he offered looking over to our 4 year old with a grin. Felix looked so much like Hendrix it was freaky and the two, despite the age difference, were thick as thieves.“Do you want to stay with daddy or come with mommy, Fee?” I asked.“Daddy!” he exclaimed.“Okay I will be back as soon as possible” I said, unbuckling my seat belt. Ga
I watched the people milling about from the dining room window, there were 30 or so people waiting in the backyard while rock music played on. I couldn’t see Gabriel from where I was standing but I could just imagine what he looked like in an outfit similar to Hendrix’s. I could hardly contain my excitement at seeing him.I admired Lane’s beautiful set up and hoped it wasn’t going to rain, as the skies were grey with clouds. Lane had strategically hung white sheer linen in some of the trees and placed lanterns as decorations. There were rows of white chairs occupied by the guests and white flower petals down the would-be aisle. I spotted a makeshift bar with huge ‘Beer and Whiskey’ signs hanging above it and laughed. Of course Gabriel would make sure the guests were well ‘watered’. The backyard had a very magical feeling about it.
With everyone’s help and support the first week of Emily’s life went on without a hitch. I went on a few emotional roller coasters and woke up soaked in sweat a few times at night. But in all I couldn’t ask for a better baby. Emily was easily content, sleeping most of the day and only waking for feeds and diaper changes. My mom took on the role of grandmother very well, she rocked, washed, and cooed at Emily every chance she had. Janice cooked up a storm for everyone staying with us and froze several meals for when we were on our own again. Lane and I spent most of Emily’s feeding time in my bed going over wedding details and ideas.“I trust you, Lane” I told her for the millionth time, “do whatever you want!” Lane took a deep exasperated breath and let it out slowly, gently stroking Emily’s head.
At 40 weeks, I was exhausted, cranky and swollen all over. I went out for walks with Axel and Gabriel every morning while Lane had been sending Janice new recipes to induce labor for the last two weeks and each day, Janice brought me some new miraculous concoction guaranteed to work. At night Gabriel gave me mind shattering orgasms to stimulate contractions, and I felt bad that his fiancé was now the size of a beached whale. Not that he would say such things, but I was disheartened by the way I looked and felt. I knew it was temporary but I was getting anxious to meet my baby. Sam, Janice’s boyfriend, was helping with some projects around the house and cottage to keep Gabriel occupied while the four of us waited impatiently for the stork to drop by.Finally one night as we lay in bed after an ordinary day, I felt a distinct popping in my lower belly before a rush of liquid squirted out of me. As fast as I could, I rolled out of bed and waddled
“Gabe I know you’re going to hate this idea, but I booked myself in for a maternity photoshoot and I would love for you to be there” I said, bracing myself for the inevitable rejection.“Sure,” he said, not taking his eyes off his laptop screen.“Were you listening?”“Yes, you have a maternity photoshoot and you want me to be there”“In the photos though”“Yes, that’s fine” he said as he placed his laptop on the coffee table and grabbed my foot to massage it.“You're sure?” I asked, stifling a groan of pleasure as he massaged my calf.“Yes Harper, I will be there in the photos with you and your belly. It’s fine” he said with finality.“Oh, well thank you”“When is it?”&
By December Gabriel and I had fully returned to our old routine. Though the pain of losing a baby never quite goes away, it becomes a little more bearable as the days go on.Sally had asked me to return to the diner for the winter, but I got an even more enticing job as an instructor at the community college. I would deliver a certain amount of theory content during the fall and winter semesters and in the summer I would take on the students at Gabriel’s work sites in order to give them hands-on practice. After a long and thorough conversation with Gabriel I sadly declined Sally’s offer and took on the college job. I loved having a 9-4 job that allowed me to be at home in the evening. Gabriel had secured a few building jobs around town and was also home every night. He frequently assured me he didn’t find life with me dull and always looked forward to coming home and seeing me each night. Our new house was everything I co
*Warning, this chapter deals with traumatic subject matter that could upset some readers*We had made it to the last couple of weeks of the summer with very little excitement at the camp. Everything seemed to be running smoothly and Gabriel proudly announced this was his most successful season so far. The house had sold and we had slowly started to move into our new house, though we spent most of our time at the cottage to enjoy the lake on our days off.“Why are you making a bagel?” Gabriel asked one morning as he filled his plate with bacon and eggs.“To eat…” I said with a frown.“You don’t eat bagels” he said looking at me curiously, “Is this a pregnancy thing?”“No, I don’t, and no it’s not”“Who are you specially making bagels for?” he asked, annoyed.&ld
I had my follow up ultrasound and blood work done during March and awaited the results impatiently. I knew Gabriel was just as anxious about it as I was but he was better able to mask his anxiety as he kept busy with work.Luckily, the ground began thawing and construction on our new house began. This gave me a brief moment of respite as I focused on the blueprints, choosing paint and flooring. It was an exciting process to watch, one day there was a huge hole in the ground, then there was a foundation and soon walls were being put up.Matteo had come down to help Gabriel get ready for the season. He was staying in Chrissy’s old room while he was with us and went home on the weekend to see his family. Gabriel and Matteo were away most of the day and I took those opportunities to pack up the house and deal with the realtors. Since our new house wasn’t going to be ready until the fall Gabriel had rented a storage unit as I had su
