"I swear I had no intentions with Vano back then."
For the umpteenth time, Amber uttered those words to Celine, but she still refused to believe what her cousin was saying.
"If it wasn't true, why did you both undress like that back then?"
"We were both unaware, Celine. We were both influenced by that cursed drink," Vano muttered, suddenly regretting even trying that drink. It had nearly led him to sleep with Chelsea despite his mother's pleas and her refusal.
Unfortunately, Vano had only become more eager when he realized that underneath Chelsea's hoodie and skirt, she was wearing nothing. Vano's remorse stemmed from his actions toward Chelsea, not Amber, who seemed to have been a willing participant. His regret was intensified because of Chelsea.
Vano couldn't imagine what would have happened if Margareth hadn't arrived in time that day. He would have definitely forced Chelsea to do it with him. And shortly after Margareth's anger, Carlos also showed up to intervene in their quarrel.
Of course, his father would have been deeply hurt and held a grudge against him for touching his wife.
"Now you can say those cursed drinks, but yesterday you seemed to enjoy them and even seemed to enjoy everything with Amber. Or maybe you actually have feelings for Amber all along?" Celine was getting emotional because Vano had not shown any intention of apologizing like Amber did.
"I've told you repeatedly that this is your perspective on me and Amber, well, it's as you think it is. What we've said together represents my words as well. Why would we both say the same thing if you still insist we did it on purpose?"
"If either of you had refused, it wouldn't have gone that far yesterday. The fact is, you both gave in, and it nearly happened!"
"I've already said that if that's how you think of me and Amber, then yes, it is. I accept it. No matter how much Amber and I explain it to you, you stick to your own opinion, your own judgment. So, I accept it. If you think it's true, then it is."
"Are you admitting to this?"
"It depends on you, Celine. If you believe Amber's words, then it's not what you just said. It all depends on how you choose to interpret what happened that day. Amber and I truly had no reason to do it. No more, no less, simply because we were both under the influence of that drink."
"But, Van."
"But what, Celine? I'm tired of having to explain this over and over again. If you keep pressing me like this, seeking an explanation when Amber has already given one, and I've confirmed it, it's better if we end our relationship. Like I told you yesterday, we should both introspect and figure out what we need to fix to get our relationship back to how it used to be. It might be painful to part ways when we still have feelings for each other. But at least this way, we won't hurt each other in the midst of the love that's still there."
"No, I don't want this relationship to end!"
"If you don't want this relationship to end, you also have to accept all the reasons Amber has given, unless you find us doing it consciously, then it's a different story, and you have every right to demand an explanation from me. But when you found us in an impaired state, it's unfair for you to judge us like this."
Celine took a deep breath and let it out roughly, realizing that continuing the argument was futile as Vano had made his final decision. Unfortunately, her boyfriend had threatened to end the relationship if she insisted on more explanations.
"This time, I won't bring this up anymore as long as you don't end our relationship," Celine finally said, although she found it difficult to utter those words. Losing Vano would be devastating for her.
"Alright, then. All the issues are settled, and I can take my leave," Vano signaled to Amber to follow him.
"No, I still have something to discuss with Amber," Celine held back Amber, who wanted to follow.
"Fine, as far as I'm concerned, it's settled. And please, never bring this up again when you're with me."
Once again, Vano emphasized their conversation today, and Celine could only nod resignedly. She couldn't press him any further for an explanation. Now, Amber was the only one left who could provide answers about what had actually happened after she left the apartment that day.
Margareth struggled to hold back her tears as she entered the public cemetery and made her way to Tomas's resting place. Her steps were heavy as she approached his grave. She knelt there.
"How are you today? Are you doing okay?" Margareth laughed but wiped away the tears streaming down her cheeks. "Why has my life turned out like this, Carlos?" she asked. "My life has been adrift in sin ever since our financial downfall. But one thing you should know, even up to this moment, I still love you dearly, my husband." She spoke softly, squeezing the stone marker on Tomas's grave.
All the beautiful memories flooded Margareth's mind, remembering how perfect and harmonious their marriage had been, even though they had never been blessed with a child. Tomas had given her all the perfection she needed. Unable to contain herself, Margareth sobbed and cried, begging Tomas to return, even if just for a moment.
She missed him terribly. "Do you know that when you were sedated by the painkiller Chelsea gave you, I would always hold you close? Did you ever feel how much I loved you, even though my pride was too big to admit it and allowed myself to be lost in my arrogance and selfishness?" Margareth held back her words. "I loved you both so much, but I became selfish and indifferent, so I could live freely out there. But no one ever knew how hurt I was living this life. How I wish you could come back, so I could hold you in silence, release my troubles and fatigue when facing life. I wish I could stop, but the environment I've already immersed myself in is a gathering of socialites. I'd be ashamed to be laughed at if they knew I had nothing left. I didn't want you to be laughed at because you couldn't provide me with luxury like before. But they don't know how great your love was for me, Carlos. And now, you know my life is getting darker, depending on some college student who always demands something in return from me. If I could, I'd turn back time so that now, time wouldn't hurt and destroy my life." Margareth continued to lie down on the mound of earth that had swallowed Tomas's body. No one knew how often she had visited there just to release her frustrations and anxieties.
"Carlos, I regret what I did to you that day. If only I hadn't been so foolish, your body would still be here for me to release all my exhaustion and weariness from living this life. But this regret is useless because when you were still here with me, I had no desire to show my love to you. Instead, I passed all my responsibilities onto Chelsea, when it should have been me protecting and caring for you, not our daughter."
Margareth's tears flowed uncontrollably as she imagined how her life used to be with Tomas. If only she hadn't been tempted by the promises of her own friend, she would still be living well today, and Tomas would have provided her with luxury.
"I also came here to apologize because I couldn't take care of our daughter properly. Indri told me that Chelsea sold herself to a man. I don't know who or exactly where our daughter could get such thoughts, but I've truly failed in educating her.
I hope for your forgiveness. I did consider the terrible idea of selling Chelsea, but I quickly dismissed it, remembering that she was your beloved daughter. I also..." Margareth raised her hands, feeling the raindrops starting to moisten the ground.
That meant she needed to leave and say goodbye to Tomas. "I must go now. If there are no obstacles or urgent matters, I'll definitely come to visit you here," she said before getting up from her seat and leaving the cemetery.
She didn't want to get soaked in the rain before catching the taxi she had arranged earlier. She had asked the driver to wait on the edge of the cemetery. Before closing the taxi door, Margareth looked back at Tomas's grave. She missed her husband terribly and needed his support.
Suddenly, she longed for how Tomas used to scold and nag at her. Since Tomas's passing, there was no one to argue with her anymore, even though Carlos had persistently pushed for a divorce when he seriously asked her to marry him.
It was her fault for accepting Carlos's proposal back then. Margareth also glanced at the diamond-studded ring still on her finger, the ring Carlos had given her when he asked her to be his wife. If only that day Carlos hadn't asked her to marry him, she wouldn't have been so insistent on doing something terrible to Tomas.
Indeed, wealth had blinded her, causing her to lose her soulmate forever. She couldn't find her way back, but because she still felt a connection with Carlos, and Chelsea was still living in his house, she naturally went there.
Slowly, she entered the house, trying to put on a bold face. She was ready to talk to Chelsea after the events of yesterday, and her destination was Chelsea's room. She wanted to check on her daughter's condition.
Margareth hoped she could talk to the girl, discuss their relationship if possible. She was truly afraid that her daughter would hate her, especially since she had made accusations and caused trouble. In this situation, Margareth didn't want to think badly of Chelsea, but the one who informed her about this was Kevin.
Kevin had also received this information from Indri. Margareth was very familiar with Indri because she was Chelsea's only friend and considered her as family. Naturally, Margareth trusted what Indri told Kevin.
"Why are you here, Carlos?" Margareth asked as she opened Chelsea's bedroom door. The first thing she saw was Carlos, who had just covered Chelsea with a blanket and had been kissing her forehead.
"Chelsea's body temperature is a little high, and she just finished crying. I don't know what's bothering her; I have no idea," Carlos explained before leaving Margareth. He passed by her without saying a word.
Carlos felt tired of seeing Margareth in the house, but he couldn't chase her away because Chelsea hadn't made that decision yet. However, he knew that no matter how wicked and sinful Margareth was, she also had her good side for Chelsea. Carlos would leave all the decisions regarding whether to kick her out or not to Chelsea.
Approaching Chelsea to check if Carlos was telling the truth, she gently touched Chelsea's forehead with the back of her hand. It turned out that her daughter wasn't feeling well.
Margareth could also see that Chelsea's eyes were slightly swollen, as if she had been crying for a long time.
Tension filled the dining room now as Margareth followed Carlos to get some food.
Usually, in that dining room, they could still make jokes even if it was just a show for Chelsea. However, today everything had changed. Chelsea was now lying in her room with a high fever, and Carlos had called the doctor to examine her. If Chelsea's condition turned out to be worse than expected, Carlos would reluctantly have to take her to the hospital.
Carlos was worried about his wife's health, so he was focused on taking care of Chelsea. He forgot about Margareth and Vano, not knowing that Vano already knew about his marriage to Chelsea.
Carlos didn't seem to care about Margareth and Vano anymore. He wanted to take care of his wife alone without any help from anyone else.
"Carlos, can I talk to you?" Margareth grabbed Carlos's wrist when he was about to carry the food tray.
Since earlier, Margareth had been gathering her courage to ask Carlos a question. She realized that she was a sinner and not worthy to be with him. However, she wanted to know what her relationship with Carlos would be like, where it would go.
"I don't have time to talk to you now; maybe later when I have some free time," Carlos said, releasing Margareth's grip on his wrist.
Only then did Carlos continue walking to Chelsea's room. "But you don't need to worry about our relationship. It's already strained, and I intend to end the relationship we once had. It doesn't mean I'll kick you out of here. You can still stay here as Chelsea's mother, and..." Carlos paused for a moment, a bit unsure about whether he should reveal the secret he and Chelsea had been hiding for so long. However, considering Chelsea's current condition, he decided to stop the conversation. He didn't want his candor to hurt Chelsea and worsen her condition.
"And what? Why did you stop talking as if there's some big secret that you and Chelsea are hiding from me? What's going on, Carlos? Are you in a relationship with her, or perhaps..."
"Don't think small-minded like that. Chelsea is not like you, cheap," Carlos retorted.
"Carlos," Margareth protested. "Can't we discuss this for a moment? Just because I'm Chelsea's adoptive mother, can't you show some tolerance for me as a human with feelings? Of course, it feels uncomfortable to stay in someone's house when they no longer want us."
Carlos turned to her. "Do whatever you want. If you want to stay here, fine, if you want to leave, it's also okay, as long as you don't take Chelsea because I care about her," Carlos concluded, no longer wanting to prolong the discussion. He had said everything he needed to say about his relationship with Chelsea.
55The rest could be conveyed by Chelsea herself to Margareth about the nature of their relationship."There's nothing to worry about regarding your daughter's condition. Everything seems fine, but her mind is a bit disturbed, and she's skipped a meal. I think she hasn't eaten anything today, which is why she ended up like this. Please try to get her to eat, even if it's just a few bites, and make sure she drinks plenty of water to prevent dehydration. If her fever doesn't go down by tomorrow morning, then you should take her to the hospital for further treatment."Carlos listened carefully to the doctor's assessment of Chelsea's condition. What the doctor said made sense. Chelsea's current state could be due to her thinking about an issue Carlos was unaware of, but he knew that something was bothering her greatly.Carlos wished he could accelerate the investigation into Margareth and Tomas's past. However, many years had passed since Tomas's company went bankrupt, so finding out what
56It was a high-risk move, but Chelsea had done it to get permission to stay there. She had underestimated how revenge and ambition could destroy her life to its lowest point, just as it had now.Chelsea tried to control her breathing several times to stay alive, to ensure that she could later walk away from the house and contemplate how she would live without Carlos by her side. Her eyes closed. She had been holding back her tears, but they still broke when she heard the door close firmly. She sobbed, her cries so bitter in the luxurious room. She squeezed the pillow beneath her head tightly, lamenting the decision Carlos had made.Chelsea couldn't blame her husband for this, as it was her own mistake, made with Vano. She should not have forced her will to seek revenge. In reality, what did she achieve? Her unfulfilled revenge had only led to heartache because, in truth, Margareth and Tomas were not her biological parents. They might not have loved her as genuinely as she had loved
57Remembering that, he shouldn't have been so daring to have such a long and serious relationship with Celine, because he himself admitted the pain of losing his first love in this world. However, the attention Celine gave him had changed everything, causing him to forget that all this time his father had been fighting for justice to uncover the accident that his mother had experienced."The accident ten years ago. The accident that led to Celine's father being sentenced to two years in prison, but in reality, he was never actually detained?"Vano was stunned by Amber's account, saying that Celine's father had never been imprisoned at all. While Vano had heard from his father that the judge's decision was to sentence Celine's father to two years in prison. Two years seemed unfair to them, and now Amber was saying that those two years were merely a cover-up. This made it even clearer that something was wrong with his mother's death."Can I ask you for a favor, Sis?""What kind of favo
58Carlos raised his face to look at Chelsea, he had only been focused on the solid circle. For a moment he was silent, seeing that his wife's cheeks did look a little chubby. Her two circles also seem to be getting denser, as are Chelsea's hips which are now getting bigger too. This change makes it even more clear that Chelsea is not the girl she used to be."Apart from being a little enlarged, I think it also feels painful." Chelsea gave a little squeeze to the circle she had just taken out. Slightly massaging and grimacing. “Especially when Daddy squeezed it. It's actually quite painful, Dad. But I'm afraid to tell Para.”"Why weren't you told?""I don't want to reduce the pleasure of making love with you," Chelsea answered honestly."How can it be called romance if one of us is in pain.""It's okay, Dad. Besides, I like it too. As Daddy knows, I really like this. Just try it if you don't believe it." Bringing the tip of the ball closer to Carlos' lips. "Try sucking it, I'm sure yo
59"I hope Mom is willing to accompany me to meet Celine to deliver the good news that Dad mentioned earlier," Chelsea stopped in her tracks, looking at Vano, who was now walking alongside her."Why do I have to come along, Van? Honestly, I'm not keen on meeting Celine. She might get the wrong idea, and I don't want to add any more burdens to my already heavy life. Just let it be the two of you; I'd rather focus on my happiness and your dad's, nothing more, so my life can be peaceful.""Yeah, I get it, Mom. But it wouldn't hurt to have you with me to convey all of this because, after all, my relationship with Celine got her blessing because of you." Chelsea held Vano's hand. "Trust me, she won't act out because your current status is my mother. So, there's no reason for her to be jealous of you.""That's what you say, but it's not impossible for her to think I'm just taking advantage of both of you. As you know, if..."Vano covered Chelsea's mouth with his index finger. "Remember, I'l
60"Please, Celine. Just this once, understand that Chelsea is not in good condition.""You should also understand that I'm curious about the news you want to share. There's nothing wrong with that, right? Just convey it, we can discuss it later.""I can't convey it right now because Chelsea's condition is more important than that news.""So, she's more important than me?""Absolutely. What's wrong with it? Is there something wrong with a child prioritizing his mother?""But she's not your biological mother.""Even though she's not my biological mother, she can replace my biological mother's position in my father's heart, making our lives much better. As you know, since my mother passed away, my father also fell apart, just like when her body was buried in the ground. So you better have some self-awareness that Chelsea's position is indeed more important than yours, and there's a possibility I might cancel sharing all the good news because of your actions.""Van, that's enough." Chels
61"Chelsea's mother is currently 3 weeks pregnant, and her condition is weak. Fortunately, she was brought to the hospital quickly; otherwise, something bad might have happened to the fetus. From now on, I recommend paying attention to her food intake, ensuring a balanced diet and fiber. I also suggest keeping her mental state stable, avoiding stress, especially with so many problems to think about, so that the fetus can stay strong."Carlos and Vano were still silent; they didn't know what to say because pregnancy was not an answer that had crossed their minds when they saw Chelsea ill.Carlos also admitted that Chelsea had been quite sensitive lately and would cry often even over minor issues. The worst was when Chelsea found out that Tomas and Margareth were not her biological parents. That had made Chelsea's condition worse. However, Carlos could swear by anything that he never expected his wife to be pregnant."May we see my wife inside, Doctor?" Vano broke the silence among the
62In the meantime, Chelsea would stay at the hospital, as per Carlos's decision. Although Chelsea wanted to go home, she understood that her relationship with Carlos, which was still not publicly known, and especially her mother's lack of awareness about their relationship, made her worry that her presence at the hospital might cause new problems.Chelsea wanted to reveal all the secrets to her mother, but not like this. She wanted to tell her in a different way, not be discovered by being in the hospital like this."As for your mother, you don't need to worry. Let Daddy be the one to tell her that you are currently hospitalized.""So Daddy wants to tell Mom right away that I'm pregnant? That's why I need to rest here first?"Chelsea made sure that she didn't want Margareth to find out without her being present. Chelsea just wanted to see Margareth's reaction when she found out that the man she loved had now planted a seed in her own adopted daughter's womb."No, for now, Daddy will
Gibran continued, "As for our divorce, I've already agreed to it. We'll proceed with the legal process, and you'll be free to start a new chapter in your life. I hope you find the happiness you deserve."The conversation between Viska and Gibran marked the beginning of the end of their tumultuous marriage. While their emotions were still raw, they had come to a mutual understanding that it was time to move on and seek happiness elsewhere.Gibran's frustration and pent-up emotions poured out as he defended his actions. He felt betrayed by Viska, who had consistently pushed him away and made unfavorable comparisons with Nicholas. Their relationship had become a battleground of insecurities, and Gibran had sought solace with Shabila.Viska's accusations stung, but Gibran was determined to make her understand the context of his actions. He continued, "Viska, I don't want to justify what I did, but it was a result of our broken marriage. We both contributed to its downfall. I needed someth
190"Also," Bryan paused, kissing Silvi's lips briefly."Don't forget that the night we were together, I can assure you, it's my child."Silvi shook her head. "It's not Devin's child. Do you think after that night, I didn't do anything with other men? Did you really think that night was the only time someone touched me? No, there have been many other nights with so many men because I felt like I wasn't pure anymore. So I was free to do it with anyone since my life was already a mess.""S-so... instead of slightly more ruining myself, and the last time it was done to me was by Devin. That's why he's willing to take responsibility. He's also convinced that this is his child."Bryan let out a bitter laugh, releasing Silvi from his embrace. "Is that so?" He loosened his tie, which had felt suffocating after hearing Silvi's explanation. "Let's prove that what you said is true." He took off the suit jacket that clung to his body.“W-what are you doing?” Silvi stepped back. Hugging her own b
189"No way! I won't leave until I meet Gibran. He has to take responsibility for this child," Shabila insisted, refusing to budge. She held onto Viska and stood her ground."Leave, I said! Go!"Viska couldn't bear Shabila's stubbornness and forcefully pulled her arm, nearly causing Shabila to stumble."What's wrong with you!" Shabila pushed away Viska's hand and fixed her disheveled hair. "Are you afraid your husband's actions will be known to your parents? Or is it that you refuse to accept the truth?" Shabila began to rant."I don't understand what you're saying. Now leave!" Viska demanded."Wait, Viska! Mom wants to ask this woman something." Viska's mother restrained her daughter and turned to Shabila. "Why did you let my granddaughter get pregnant? Don't you know he's already married? What do you want from us? Money?"Shabila seethed with anger. Her dignity felt insulted when the middle-aged woman mentioned money."Do you think I'm a lowly woman who just surrenders her body to a
188Shabila spent the whole day in frustration, angry that she couldn't meet Gibran at his cafe. She paced back and forth in her room, thinking of ways to meet him."Do you think you can avoid me forever? You won't be able to, Gibran. I have to make you take responsibility for the child I'm carrying. You won't be able to escape. Just wait and see."Shabila clenched her fists, planning a thousand ways to meet Gibran. "If I can't find you at the cafe, I'll come to your house. Let's see if you can still avoid me," she muttered to herself.Gibran decided to visit the club where he had met Shabila some time ago. He had a bad feeling about Shabila's visit to his cafe and wanted to find out what had really happened between them that night. Honestly, Gibran didn't remember much because he had been heavily intoxicated that night.Upon arriving at the club, Gibran called one of the waitresses and conveyed his request to meet with the club's owner."I'd like to discuss something important with y
187"What brand would you like, Miss?" The employee asked while displaying several different brands of pregnancy tests.Shabila looked puzzled, which only fueled the employee's suspicions. "Is this your first time buying a pregnancy test?" she guessed with a condescending glance."Y-yes," Shabila replied hesitantly. Seeing the employee looking down on her, Shabila's heart began to boil. "I am already married, just so you know. Here's my ID," she said abruptly, opening her wallet and showing her ID card, which still stated her marital status as MARRIED. Her divorce from Arya was only religious; it wasn't legally recognized yet.Seeing the ID placed on the counter, the pharmacy employee became flustered. She was torn between embarrassment and guilt. "I'm s-sorry, Miss, I didn't mean to—""It's fine, I understand!" Shabila retorted sharply, then pointed towards the pregnancy tests. "So, which one is the best?" she asked. She deliberately didn't want to prolong the issue since she wanted
186Several days had passed, and today was the ceremonial bath event for Silvi. Everything was well-prepared, and the guests were moved by the event, which was expertly guided by the paid organizers, arranged by Silvi's parents. Silvi's large family wore matching light green kebaya, while Devin's family, who were present, wore light blue kebaya. The event was conducted with great solemnity, and Silvi looked beautiful despite wearing makeup that wasn't too flashy. This ceremony included many symbols and motifs that served as lessons or guidelines for the couple, influencing their married life. These symbols or motifs mainly conveyed advice and useful insights for the newlyweds' life together. That's why Mama Silvi insisted on holding the ceremonial bath event, even though Silvi and Devin had been married before. In addition to the food ordered for the guests and relatives, the organizers had prepared specific dishes usually served during this ceremonial bath event. These included tumpe
185Meanwhile, Silvi and Devin listened to the doctor's explanations during the examination. Silvi's pregnancy was already at three weeks. The doctor prescribed vitamins and anti-nausea medication since Silvi mentioned she often felt dizzy and nauseous. Devin didn't ask any questions because it was his first time in a obstetrician's office. He was confused about how to react. Silvi was the one who asked all the questions.Silvi got her next appointment scheduled, and then they left. Devin and Silvi went to the hospital's pharmacy to pick up the prescribed medicines first. Then, Devin asked Silvi where she wanted to go."I don't know. I just feel like lying down in my room.""Why's that? Don't you want to go out together?" Devin asked softly. They were now in the car. "How about having ice cream and buying some new sleepwear for you?""What's the point of buying sleepwear?""Because you're pregnant, and I want you to sleep comfortably. How about it?""I don't want to," Silvi said, maki
184As a father, whose heart wouldn't break upon learning that his daughter is pregnant with no official partner by her side? He felt like a terrible father, willing to do anything as long as the man who impregnated his daughter, Silvi, would take responsibility.Pregnancy is never an easy journey for a woman, especially without a husband by her side. The man Silvi referred to as the father finally decided to find Devin, the man who should be held accountable for what happened to Silvi. He took a taxi to Devin's whereabouts, hoping that he would indeed be there. Impatiently sitting in the taxi, the weary-looking man, no longer in his youth, stared at his phone screen. The journey from the city to the village was quite long, which was why he opted for a taxi. Besides, he didn't want any unpleasant conversations about Silvi if he had brought his driver along.Fortunately, he found out about Silvi's pregnancy before it was too late, or who knows what might have happened. He sighed wearil
183Nicholas didn't want anything to happen to their unborn child. So, he tried his best to grant her wishes. Besides, Alesya's request was relatively easy to fulfill, and it had been quite some time since they had visited her hometown."Are you happy?" Nicholas asked.Alesya turned and nodded. "I've really missed my hometown. As nice as it is to live in the city, the hometown is the number one place to visit," Alesya replied. "Besides, all my childhood memories are buried there."Hearing Alesya's response, Nicholas could only smile. He, who had lived in the city since childhood, never experienced life in the village. So, he didn't fully understand what Alesya meant. In his mind, Alesya might just miss the peaceful atmosphere of the village because the city was quite noisy."Get some rest; I'll wake you up when we arrive," Nicholas said after a moment of silence."Okay."Alesya adjusted her seating position to make herself more comfortable. She also slightly reclined her seat to make
