The Kingdom of Laera, known as the Home of the Knights, Slayer of the Dragons, the Archenemy of the Dragonae Kingdom. The kingdom set quite a reputation in the world of Elantro, one that was set apart from all kingdoms. The abundant food and water with the endless flow of magic in its nature made the world think the Laera Kingdom was the chosen one of the Fates.
This was the very reason why the dragons from the Dragonae Kingdom wanted to take hold of Laera. However, after centuries of fighting over the land, they still failed.
Why even the Knights and the royal family of Laera had no idea. The only thing they knew is that they were blessed.
But then there was this rumor. There were always rumors. Some were just passersby’s gossips, one that made people snicker amongst themselves with amusement. Some rumors could raise a few eyebrows or one only whispered about on the dark corners of the streets. However; there was a particular myth beyond the wildest of imaginations; more fantastic than the others combined…
This myth was just a rumor for some, but a truth for many who witnessed it–
And lived the day to tell its story.

"You mean to tell me there is a dragon locked in the Voiceless Mountains?"
"That's what I'm saying, forehead!"
"… you're unbelievable."
Two women leaned back in their chairs; warm chamomile tea perched at their lips. The blonde one took a quick sip before placing her mug down hard, nearly tipping it over in the process. Thin lips pursed into a frown at her best friend. Blue eyes flashing irritably right before she tilted her head to the side in annoyance.
"Whatever, Sophia. You know nothing. I know someone who's seen it."
The other female rolled her brown eyes, stirring more sugar into her chamomile tea. "Let me guess: Leon told you, huh, Jennifer?"
Her cheeks tinted, and she toyed with the napkin in her lap. "Why does it matter who told me? Who lies about dragons, Soph?"
Said woman sighed and rubbed her temples. Why would a dragon dwell in the Voiceless Mountains right in the heart of the Nightpoint City here in the Laera Kingdom?
The Laera Kingdom was always dragon-free. Dragons are killed upon sight. All of them, members of the Knights Association, are dragon slayers. Well, except for her.
Anyway, Voiceless Mountains remained off-limits because of the dangerous cliffs and wild animals that roamed the area. Anyone who entered it never returned, hence why it became impermissible. Still, the list of feral animals did not include a mythical dragon.
According to Jennifer – no, according to the myth of the dragon made specifically for children’s bedtime stories – there was a man whose sole purpose included protecting his loved ones.
“Some parts of the story were lost throughout history,” Jennifer told her, “but the story recites this man, who was once a Knight, found out that his family members were the dangerous ones. They were planning a rebellion that would kill hundreds of innocents and throw Elantro into war. Without a choice, he murdered his entire family. Angry about the man’s decision to slaughter his family without consulting him first, the Queen of Laera transformed him into a dragon, the one creature that the Knights were accustomed to hate. You heard the Voiceless Mountains rumble whenever we’re close to it, right? Rumors had it that he breathed fire as hot as the flames he engulfed his family in to chase those who try to invade his prison. Then, he remains chained inside the cave he poured the blackened ashes in, haunted by the smell of singed flesh and the screams of agony that rang in his ears.”
Jennifer was waving her hands around as if she was speaking a poetic performance in the Aisle of Music and her expression was very exaggerated. Was she trying to tell a story to a child?
“That was all a load of crap,” Sophia retorted as she sighed and put her teacup on its saucers with finesse, “Dragons are enemies. If they existed in this kingdom, the Higher Knights in the association will kill him.”
"If there isn't a dragon, why don't you go to Voiceless Mountains and see?" Jennifer gave Sophia a sly smile after picking up her teacup and drank its remaining content.
Dark brows furrowed. "Why the hell would I go out there?"
The blonde rolled her eyes and exhaled loudly. "To prove the myth about this so-called Knight-turned-dragon doesn’t exist, duh?"
Sophia grew annoyed with her friend’s persistence. She didn't care if a dragon resided in the Voiceless Mountains or not. The Voiceless Mountains is forbidden for a reason that involves severe punishment from the castle itself; therefore, no valid reason for visiting. She said this to her friend who kept the smirk on her face. An awful sensation built in the pit of Sophia’s stomach from the look she received.
"What's your problem?" she snapped, taking the last bite of her apple cinnamon muffin.
Jennifer’s bright irises sparkled in mischief. "Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about telling Zain what a chicken you are and he'll forget all about you. I'll be in with him and guess whose bed he'll... "
"Yeah right, you witch!"
A few heads in the teashop turned to gaze at the woman’s sudden outburst. She inched back into her chair, cheeks flamed bright red and a strong urge to wrap her hands around Jennifer’s slim neck. The silence that took over the room plus Jennifer’s smug expression made Sophia regret such an outburst.
It was no secret that Jennifer and Zain dated before. However, it was not working well and Jennifer decided to end it. Zain was not that interested so he agreed as soon as she mentioned it to him. They were on good terms and getting back together is not impossible.
"Well, you know," Jennifer began, her smirk growing wider. "Zain was the one who brought up the subject of the dragon. He’s interested in the truth."
Sophia growled at her sudden interest in seeing if there lied truth to this mythical creature. If Zain wanted to know if the dragon existed in the Voiceless Mountain, discovering that information may impress him.
“You have to stop being a pathetic loser here, Sophia,” his words echoed in her mind. “You’ll just get yourself killed and become a burden for us.”
Perhaps, Zain will change his mind once she returns and tell him about her discovery in the Voiceless Mountains. That would help start a bridge between their pretty thin friendship.
The woman analyzed the setbacks of exploring the Forbidden Forest that surrounds the Voiceless Mountains. Zain was worth the risk, so she said, "All right, I'll go."
"Great!" the other woman exclaimed. "We'll go this weekend! You, Caiden Mournflame, Zac Haven, and me! I'll pack... "
Jennifer’s voice faded as Sophia's mind drifted off into thoughts about this trip. Dread formed in her chest at what she agreed to. She lacked the desire required for traveling into the middle of a forest during summer to fight off insects and whatever else. It was possible because she had dumb friends and she seemed to lose common sense with Jennifer’s constant blackmail when it comes to Zain, the end of her life may be closer than it should. Oh fates, help them.
~O~O~O~
"Come on, Sophia!"
Said woman sighed as she gazed up at the bright, but partly cloudy sky. Why did she follow through with this idiotic idea, in the middle of summer, sweat pouring down her body, and insects eating her alive? She contemplated this wasn't such a good idea, especially on a ninety-degree day with what had to be one hundred percent humidity. Life sucked at the moment. She believed it would be easier just to go up to Zain and talk to him about doing her very best next time instead of taking this roundabout, idiotic way of trying to impress him.
"Shut up, I'm coming!" Sophia shouted back while attempting to fight her way through a stubborn bush. After breaking through with a struggle, Sophia stumbled toward the bright yellow jumpsuit that moved farther and farther away. Wouldn’t that be the worst outfit to wear in this kind of mission, though? "Zac, slow down, you idiot!"
The spiky-haired male looked over his shoulder but continued to walk away with Caiden and Jennifer a few feet in front of him. "You're moving so slow, Sophia! Catch up already!"
"Why you... " Sophia muttered, having every intent on bashing that guy's head at the moment she caught them. They were her childhood friends but once she gets into trouble here… "Dang it, I'll... "
Her sentence stopped abruptly when her sandal got tangled in a mess of roots. Sophia cursed her luck and attempted to unwrap herself from its clutches. Eyes darting ahead as she tugged, she barely saw Zac and the others from how far ahead they had gotten. Sophia attempted to break the vine, but the root held fast and she got more irritated the harder she fought with it.
"Wait for a second, guys!" she shouted and her heart sank when they continued walking.
Great, she was all alone, miles deep into the woods, the roots still refused to let go of her sandal, and now the sky darkened with the threat of a storm. Damn the weatherman for saying it would be a sunny day. Enraged, Sophia yanked her shoe so hard that she ripped the foliage and fell flat on her butt. She cursed again, stood up, and tried to dust the dirt off her brown combat pants when a drop of warm rain plopped on her nose. Turning brown eyes up to the sky, Sophia’s spirit deflated further at the sight of the darkened clouds. Thunder sounded overhead, and she took off in the direction she last saw her three childhood friends.
"Jennifer!" she yelled as she dodged trees and jumped over bushes. "Zac! Caiden! Where are you, idiots?!"
The howling of the wind picking up sounded as her only reply. The rain fell heavier and lightning majestically forked the sky. Sophia's eyes darted in every direction trying to find shelter from the storm, but her immediate surroundings included only forestry. She had to put some distance between herself and the many trees. A lightning storm this strong created high electrocution rates and dying in such a way had been omitted from her to-do list.
"Dang it," Sophia cursed while brushing her wet locks out of her face. "Just my luck for this to happen to me! Of course, they wouldn't bother to make sure everyone was still together."
The lost woman got soaked to the bone within seconds and just when she thought underneath a tree would be her only shelter, out of the corner of her eye, Sophia spotted a cave in the side of a rock wall. It seemed a little... intimidating, but a bright flash of lightning and a deep roll of thunder threw all hesitation out the window.
Sophia bolted for the cave and once inside, she placed her hands on her knees and struggled to catch her breath. Her sides screamed with each breath and her throat was raw from how much oxygen she tried to inhale at once. After a few moments, the exhausted girl managed to slow her breathing, and she paused a moment to take in her surroundings. Her eyes had to adjust to the dim lighting and when they did, Sophia saw the cave sharply grew narrow. It went deeper into the side of the mountain. Could it be…
"Does the dragon in the myth live here?" Sophia whispered to herself. She then frowned. "I sound so pathetic..." Still, her curiosity slowly got the best of her. A dragon didn’t live in this cave, but it couldn't hurt to look... right? Sophia paused for a moment and weighed her options. The safest course of action involved remaining at the mouth of the cave until the storm passed. What if she missed a critical detail determining if the dragon survived? "Why am I even contemplating this again?" she scolded herself, eyes still scanning her location wearily. "I need to find the others first." Unfortunately, the woman was inquisitive. If anything, she wanted to check out the cave to prove a myth remained just that so she could rub it in Jennifer’s face. Nothing was more satisfying than proving her best friend wrong... since she always seemed to be right. With a decision in mind, Sophia pulled a flashlight from the pack on her shoulders and made her way de
Sophia had been sitting down near Eli for about an hour now, bored out of her mind. She could only swim and explore so much before it grew boring in the cave. How was she supposed to last a month in an environment that turned into a hot spring the closer she got to Eli? True fear of Eli the dragon changing his mind and kill her in an instant haunted her. She would die of heatstroke or anger a dragon before the day was over. Sophia glanced at her round clock, given to the Student Knights as soon as they graduated from the training academy. The clock shows the time of the day, and right now, it was stuck at the same time when she fell into this trap. It seemed that there was time manipulation magic in this cave. Letting out a heavy sigh as she looked out at the waterfall, the sounds becoming a melody. Brown eyes scanned the water sloshing into the pond below as if she were in a trance. The beautiful crystal-clear flow of the water drew the eyes towards it like a b
"You're a monster!" "Iam," he echoed, turning around to face. He tried to force her to shy away with hostility looming towards her. "However, it is not your place to give your opinion on something that does not concern you. Even more so when you remain ignorant to the entire story." Sophia gazed up at the creature before her and a revelation glared back at him. The fear he desired lingered, but in the intense gaze, she gave defiance. Anger blazed in those deep jade pools. Tears trickled down her cheeks, and he observedher wipe them away with force. She didn’t take one step away. "I'd do anything to have my parents back," she growled. "I can't believe I'm helping someone like you get out of here. You... you deserve it!"
"Eli?" she asked curiously. "Is that you?" There was something in Eli’s red eyes that Sophia couldn’t grasp. He seemed to want to tell her something but he chose not to. Instead, he said, "Yes. This is my original form.” Sophia failed to formulate another sentence. Eli’s human form took her by surprise. The longer she gazed at him, the more describing him as handsome sounded obsolete. His raven black hair reached his shoulders in a messy nest and he had that seemingly perfect sculpted face that Sophia only saw in magazines back in her apartment. And his voice… it was not the same booming, bass voice when he was in his dragon form. Instead, it was in a baritone and manly tone of voice. Her heart fluttered in her chest and her stomach tried to tie itself in knots. Sophia had never seen a more attractive man in her life and her cheeks heated up against her will. How could she focus on him in this form? Sophia understood she was acting like a love-struck
Jennifer sat in class biting her manicured nails out of nervousness, her foot tapping against the cool tile in a rhythmic pattern. She needed out of this room; her worry for Sophia prevented her from focusing on whatever their mentor droned on about. Two weeks passed since their idiotic trip to the Forbidden Forest in search of a dragon. When she and Caiden noticed Sophia hadn't caught up, they back-tracked and found no trace of their friend. There were footprints embedded in the muddied forest floor, but they led to a solid rock wall. No other clues existed to pinpoint her location. It was like the Forbidden Forest swallowed her. Jennifer wrapped her arms around her body after an unpleasant shiver crawled up her spine. The footprints vanished as if something swooped out of the sky and hauled her away. Jennifer switched to a different nail after gnawing the current to oblivion. She tried to focus on the major’s debriefing again, but his voice faded out when h
Sophia resurfaced from underneath the crystal-clear pond. She flipped her darkened brown locks over her head and hooked stray strands of hair behind her ears. A bath was just what she needed. Although Sophia grew accustomed to the humid atmosphere of the cave, all the extra training made her sticky and gross. However, she had long since outgrown her despair over not having things like clean clothes, comb, and personal necessities. Still, she was more than ready to take a scalding hot shower and maybe comb her hair that grew wild and uncontrollable. Thank the heavens, she knew a magic art to prevent her monthly visits. Sophia didn't want to think about the bathroom situation in the vast cave either. She cringed when it crossed her mind. Sophia swam in slow languid strokes to a flat rock surface where her clothes lay. It was located out of Eli's line of vision. Although he was a dragon, when the two of them were not in the Void, he was still a male and she was uncomfor
Sophia had got the hang of using her magic andhand signals in tandem after many failed attempts. She was only moments away from freeing Elijah. Her heart was pounding with anticipation, her hands wereclammy, and there was a bead of sweat trickling down the side of her face. The young woman reached up and twisted her wavy brown locks around her finger. After Gaea visited her in her dream, she knew something was about to happen... somethingserious. She hinted to her that someone Elijah knew of was coming for him. Bane of the Dragons… She knew the dragons were their arch-nemesis. But the dragons haven’t even tried to invade them for so many years now, so why are they going to war with the Dragonae Kingdom? So many questions were wracking her brain. She thought about sharing the dream she had with Elijah or telling him she already knew his name. He deserved to know what would happen. She cared about his wellbeing and the young woman couldn't li
When Sophia had gotten back to the Knights Association, she realized she made quite a fuss... indirectly. Her teammates, even her mentor, asked her what had happened. She made an excuse of getting lost in the forest, wandering in the jungle for a month before she finally got seen by some Higher Knights in patrol. She admitted it was a good excuse as the way she looked was really out of the jungle. Her hair was unkempt and her clothes were all tattered and dirty. She was somehow thankful for Elijah's help with tearing her clothes just like a month would tear it a little bit while on the run. Elijah... After such an intense kiss, Elijah had brought them back to the cave and set her up for her new mission. "Never trust anyone from the Knights Association." She had looked at her teammates after she told them a revision of her story and noted how innocent they looked. Even Zain Anderson whom she knew wasn't much of a showy of his emotions looked b
Hello, everyone! This is XSkylar19. It has been a very interesting ride for me while writing Bane of the Dragons because (fun fact) this was my very first dragon genre. I know some of you probably disliked how everything turned out or how fastpaced everything happened but know that this was intentional as I couldn't drag the story on. Anyway, while this book becomes the first book for dragon genre, it certainly wasn't my first book in the fantasy genre. The Dance of Fates: Bellatrix was my first fantasy book and I had finished it last year, 2020 so if you can go over my profile, you will find its completed version. I also have a Patreon account, you can find my name "Yeirah de Dieu" and receive trivia, character reveals and bonus chapters for all my books, including "The Dance of Fates" and "Bane of the Dragons". Hopefully, I can write more dragon genre and in time, become familiar with this trope. Until then, thank you for you support
The two men separated and slid to a stop in the dirt. Jackson gaveElijah a wicked grin. "Why don't you destroy me with your true power, Elijah Trueblade, or am I too strong for you?" Elijah exhaled. Jackson Evans’ abilities was obviously improved exponentially over the years as a Knight, but his confidence bordered onarrogance. This Knight failed to understand the severity of the plan Elijah had chosen because of the brainwash the Royal palace did to him.He opened his mouth to voice his thoughts but paused when he felt that familiar pulse of magic. She has returned. Jackson's gaze turned to see Sophia burst out of the bushes, determination written on her face. She didn't stop to talk, but ran to Elijah, performing hand signs as she went. She slammed her hands against Elijah's chest and searched, just like she had when returning him to human form but hoping her hands against his skinwould aid her. "Just what are you doi
If the first and second times are coincidences, and the third is a conspiracy, what the hell was it when she encountered another enemy on sight? How does one person cross paths with more and more danger within the Forbidden Forest? Sophia decided she must have a radar detection system that only picked up the word "danger". That or she was a magnet for insanity. Even without Gaea's encouragement, she had no trouble finding herself in confrontations with traitors. Sophia thought she ought to be grateful that she was too busy swinging her massive sword against two very familiar spandex-uniformed men to realize that the brown haired Knight who was probably their target was present. Her invisibility did not last long. A battle cry was heard behind her before a crash nearly blasted Sophia from her hiding place. Sophia whirled around, uttering a quick thanks to Jennifer for having her back. Then she saw Evelyn looking in their direction. In t
Sophia stopped when she heard the sounds of battle begin. Her heart pounded a mile a minute and her hands shook with adrenaline. Jackson was one of the strongest Knights in the Knight Association. He was not just a High Knight for no reason, which meant both were strong opponents for each other. It was a lot take in at once, but she should be used to outrageous surprises. Sophia shook her head to rid her mind of those thoughts. The question was, what should she do? No one would believe her story of magic, a dragon, and two men who were beyond comprehension. “Sophia!” she heard Caiden’s voice calling out to her. She looked on and saw Caiden, Jennifer and Zac running towards her. “Guys, what are you—” She heard it before she actually heard Jennifer shout. “DRAGONS!” The roar followed and it bursts through the huge trees, knocking down huge trunks not even the earth magic could take down. A large dragon appeared before them. The t
Elijah stared at Sophia as she put a hand on her right chest, his dark eyes glistening despite keeping his emotions in check. She slowly stood and unzipped her top blouse. Elijah opened his mouth to ask what she was doing but when she ripped the right collar of her shirt to the side, he couldn’t let any word out of his mouth. A large scar was etched just above her breast, some parts of it were covered by her bralette, but a large part of the scar was still visible. Images of his weapon embedded into her heart flooded her mind and he looked away. “Is… Is this why I got the scar?” Elijah looked back at her. Sophia dropped her hands to her side and his dark eyes caught her brown ones. “Yes.” Sophia dropped to her knees on the fake ground as she stared at Elijah’s feet. When she asked her mother about the scar, her mother would say this was done by one of the dragon’s talons. She never heard any of her parents say she was not their true daughter. Did they
IT WAS a beautiful day, with birds chirping in the forest trees as they trekked the jungle. Huge trees surrounded them and the sun was barely peeking through the green leaves that shaded them from its heat. The air was colder than outside the Forbidden Forest.Sophia stopped in front of a cave’s mouth, looking up at its high roof before she turned around. Behind her stood Caiden, Zac, and Jennifer. The three nodded at her, telling her that they will be with her until the end.She took a deep breath before she turned back and gazed at the dark inner part of the cave. She’s back…Elijah…She began to walk further into the cave. Somehow, despite being away for several months, the cave’s pathway was still familiar to her. The tunnel was still the same dark tunnel she took before and as she emerged into the other side, her body felt the familiar heat that came from its source. She glanced at the part where the lake was still the
"What do you mean by that?" Caiden asked. Sophia shook her head. “It was just a thought that bothered me for a long time.” “You mean when you came back.” She nodded and took a deep breath. “Look, there’s something I wanted to tell you. But I don’t want you to tell anybody.” Caiden furrowed his eyebrows as he stepped towards her. “If it involves a life threatening secret then I can’t promise that.” When Sophia was going to protest, he waved his hand and leaned against the banister. “Your life is more valuable than any secret you have, Soph. You can’t expect any of us to leave you alone. So if you are going to tell me what’s in your mind,” he turned to her with a serious expression, “you have to trust me that I will stand with you.” Sophia bit her lip again as she blinked her eyes numerous times, preventing the tears that are threatening to fall. She sniffed and wiped her unshed tears before she took a deep breath. “When you, Zac, and Jennifer l
Sophia sat at the dinner table next to Caiden. Normally, she had no problems eating with the Mournflames. However, tonight each one of them was fidgeting. While typical for Altea, the woman was incapable of staying still, displays of nervousness and unease were unheard for Caiden and Andre. It made her uncomfortable and she wanted nothing more than to flee to her room and meditate for a couple more hours. Altea spoke first. “Sophia dear, you know Andre and I consider you to be our own daughter. I’ve always wanted one.” Sophia nodded, uncertain where Caiden’s mother was going with this daughter talk. It made Sophia wonder why she had agreed to marry someone as lazy as Andre who was just as bad if not worse than Caiden. “Well, Andre and I have been discussing, Caiden too, it was his idea,” she added as her son cleared his throat pointedly, “we would like to make it official.” The brunette looked at each Mournflame in turn. Even though she had heard what
Life took on a pattern. She was training day in and day out all day every day, except for when she went on missions. The majority of her missions were with Jackson and Caiden, but about ten percent of them occurred with other High Knights and sometimes from the Palace Knights. The only thing odd about her new routine was her missions with Caiden and Jackson. High Knight teams were fixed like amateur Knight teams. Members for a mission were decided on what skills were needed to complete. Often times you found yourself working with someone you don’t know. But that wasn’t the case with Sophia, Jackson, and Caiden. Ninety percent of their missions were done together. Her training with Helena had increased by an insane degree. She was learning how to think on her feet and could successfully avoid most of her supervisor’s attacks. And just when she thought she had reached the end and it couldn’t get any harder, Helena increased the power behind her attacks, her speed, and
