"Eli?" she asked curiously. "Is that you?"
There was something in Eli’s red eyes that Sophia couldn’t grasp. He seemed to want to tell her something but he chose not to. Instead, he said, "Yes. This is my original form.”
Sophia failed to formulate another sentence. Eli’s human form took her by surprise. The longer she gazed at him, the more describing him as handsome sounded obsolete. His raven black hair reached his shoulders in a messy nest and he had that seemingly perfect sculpted face that Sophia only saw in magazines back in her apartment. And his voice… it was not the same booming, bass voice when he was in his dragon form. Instead, it was in a baritone and manly tone of voice.
Her heart fluttered in her chest and her stomach tried to tie itself in knots. Sophia had never seen a more attractive man in her life and her cheeks heated up against her will. How could she focus on him in this form?
Sophia understood she was acting like a love-struck teenager. She had a task to fulfill and its difficulty increased if she ogled at Eli like a horny brat. Yet brown eyes couldn't shift from him.
Well, this just changed everything, Sophia thought as she blinked a few times to pull herself out of la-la land. Then she remembered something.
“I-I thought you can’t transform back to your human form?” she accused. “That was the reason why I offered to help.”
Eli stared at her before he sighed and looked away. Was he disappointed about something?
“I told you this is my domain. I can do what I want here and that includes my ability to transform back to my human form.”
"Oh…” she said in a dumbfounded tone. “So... what do we do now?" Sophia questioned, trying hard to keep composure in her voice.
"Your magic is already unlocked in your heart, but now it needs to flow in your magic channel," he answered. "I will use my own to help it circulate through its paths."
"So, you're going to jump-start it?"
"Yes."
Sophia paused, a question she had earlier popping into her mind. "Can you tell me why I don’t have such ability? I mean, do you have any idea?”
Eli put his hands back inside his shadowy cloak and tilted his head, his deep red gaze remaining focused on her. "Magic is a power a Knight used in battle. The stronger your magic, the more powerful abilities you possess. But in your case, your magic was restricted from any kinds of battle."
"So, what would be my magic for?"
Was he talking about defensive magic? Sophia only knew a few defensive magic because Caiden was a Knight who was using one. His defensive magic can take an attack like a shield and absorb it in his channel before bouncing it back towards the enemy. She knew defensive magic was an awesome ability but it had its own drawbacks, too. However, Caiden discovered his ability just like any other normal Knight. Why couldn’t she use even just a shielding technique?
“But magic is a weapon, no matter what ability you gained.”
Eli nodded. "This dimension was created using my magic, Void. As I have mentioned earlier, Void is an ability only my family can use because of large magic instilled in our magic channel.”
The young woman wondered if his family’s magic was like Zain’s. Her interest was piqued on the possibility of her mastering magic. The day's events were unreal and hard to process.
I need a nice chamomile tea, Sophia thought, her mind exhausted as she took one more sweeping glance over the surrounding area.
"Come," Eli's tranquil voice called, and he turned away seconds later.
Sophia followed him as an invisible strand connected them together. They moved through the desolate-looking area until a group of trees appeared in the distance. Sophia squinted and noticed the leaves were ebony like the clouds; the trees' branches and trunk were the same color — as red as the sky. The foliage held beauty in its own eerie way.
Markings that matched the little stars in Eli's pupils lined each one in a unique pattern. When the pair reached about ten feet away from the trees, the black markings slithered into a shape Sophia couldn't describe. It reminded her of the symbol on an abandoned house near the Knights Association.
Eli stopped walking and turned to face Sophia. He sat down and motioned for her to follow. She obeyed with caution, not sure what to expect.
"I will use my magic to help yours flow in the channel and then we will work on controlling it," the former dragon said, locking eyes with her. He held out his palms. "Place your hands on top of mine."
The brown-haired woman reached out to rest them on her captor's, her hands covering them with a touch as light as a feather. His skin radiated a comforting warmth, Sophia ventured to say almost relaxing. She also realized how soft his palms were. Not a hint of calluses lined them, and Sophia couldn't stop her fingers from softly running against his skin without awareness of her actions.
Eli watched as the girl fixated on his hands. Gaea insulted him by sending such a woman to him. His tormentor warned Eli before he transformed him of a woman who carried the key to his freedom within her; Gaea’s choosing, of course. Eli discerned Sophia's arrival because of the circumstances Gaea laid out.
She knew her name and a little more concerning her personality traits. Gaea believed Sophia had the potential to develop powerful magic and be an asset to him after the Void unlocked it. The queen told him his Void’s magic flow would enhance Sophia's own and her strength would rival the strongest Knight in history.
Eli hadn't discovered why Gaea required another powerful being under his wing, but it was not his business to decipher her motives. He desired freedom from his dragon form and the cave; nothing else held importance. He had to be freed or else he wouldn’t be able to get his revenge.
But this was insulting. Why this girl, of all people?
Still, Eli couldn’t ignore the pain in his chest and it raised his guard. The former murderer of his family recognized this woman may be the cause, but what purpose did it serve? The soft flutter placed him in an unusual calm disposition, an unwanted reaction to a foolish woman. Many women coveted his attention before his imprisonment, but he never had this sort of reaction except to one. He studied her earth-tone eyes without a word, chestnut brown-colored hair catching his attention next. Even in the dimension of the Void, her hair shimmered in the unnatural light, giving it a silky appearance.
Why her, Gaea?
Eli shoved any thoughts of the female in front of him away and focused on the task at hand. He did not have time for hesitation. His return to his original form surpassed all distractions.
"Place your hands flat on my palms," Eli instructed. The serious expression on her features pleased him. Sophia's honest interest allowed him to focus.
Sophia inched her fingers across his smooth palms until they were at the start of his wrists. "What happens now?"
"My magic will force your magic channel to flow," Eli explained, his eyes locking with Sophia. "It will take a few moments. However, it will hurt."
The brown-haired woman bit her lip at those words. She had a high tolerance for pain, but that didn't mean she wanted to test her limits. "Is there a way to prevent it?"
"No. It depends on your magic type if it will hurt or not."
The woman remained quiet and looked down. When she lifted her head, Sophia said with determination in her voice, "Okay, go ahead."
Eli closed his eyes and when they re-opened, the dragon slit galaxy-like pupils appeared and she realized it matched the stars on the trees earlier. Sophia zeroed in on the shapes of the stars, hypnotized until a shock of pain coursed through her body.
She let out a small cry as fire inched through every muscle fiber in her body. Her nerves jolted like live wires and a flame hot enough to melt concrete poured through her. Sophia grit her teeth, refusing to remove her hands from Eli's, set on surviving the agony engulfing her. After a few moments, the searing heat lessened to bearable than soothing. Sophia let out a slow breath and cracked open her eyes. As she assumed, Eli watched her without a sound escaping his lips.
"Is it over?" Sophia's voice sounded hoarse to her ears.
Eli nodded and Sophia smiled with satisfaction at those words. Sophia pulled her hands back from her captor and marveled at the cool, flowing sensation in her body like a stream moving inside her. Sophia figured it must be the magic energy Eli mentioned.
"What now?"
The male stood, and Sophia followed suit. "Now you must learn to control your magic. Once you understand how to manifest its power, I will teach you how to fight."
Sophia cocked her head to the side and raised a brown eyebrow in confusion, the young woman asked, "Why do I need to learn to fight when I'm just supposed to help free you?"
Eli walked away without checking if Sophia followed. "You will learn in due time."
Sophia wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead and trailed after this stranger once again. She watched his long hair billow like silk with every step. This man was keeping her as a hostage until he ensured the freedom she promised. She frowned at her own contradiction: Sophia offered her help first, putting herself in this predicament. Then again, the alternative sounded... abrupt. The threat of death looming over her meant she remained a captive. The only reason Sophia wanted to help him included saving her own ass.
Eli turned around on a dime and took a step toward her, almost causing a collision between them. Sophia huffed in annoyance. "What are you doing?"
He didn't respond. Without realizing it, the young woman searched those now obsidian eyes as dark as his hair. Her keeper’s gaze analyzed her without breaking their trance. Curious brown eyes studied his features intricately. His skin, free of blemishes and facial hair, his lips thin and a little dry. His eyebrows were dark and complimented his long lashes. Eli's neck was slender, his Adam's apple visible just a little, and the lines that outlined his throat curving until they met his collarbone.
"You're very attractive," she murmured, more out of observation than infatuation... she defended.
Eli kept his composure, but his mind churned. That same fluttering impression he got earlier flickered within him. All doubt of this woman causing it fell away.
His expression hardened. He would not allow it again. Gaea planned this; as a queen who can instill pain without even existing in this era, her magic allowed her to detect what caused someone pain. Sophia must be in that vision. Eli had no interest in her reasoning. He learned his lesson about opening his heart centuries ago.
This girl in front of him hadn’t been in his presence for centuries of being imprisoned and yet he had such a response to her? Gaea must be manipulating him, an understanding that infuriated him.
Sophia let out a little gasp when Eli leaned forward, his eyes reverted to blood red and the little stars whirling in his pupils. That same jerking feeling took over her body and when it stopped, even though she was still dizzy, the sensation didn't hit her as hard as the first time. The heat of the cave washed over her and sweat poured down her brow. When the dizziness didn't subside, Sophia realized she was about to pass out.
I need to drink water, she thought as her strength failed her. Her vision faded to black for a moment and when it focused, the dehydrated woman realized she lost her ability to stand yet she hadn't fallen.
"You need to keep your fluids up or you will be of no use. Working with your magic will tire and exert your body to its limits. To stay healthy and able to use your magic, you need to triple your normal intake of water."
Sophia leaned her head back and saw Eli. He reverted to his dragon form and his tail stopped her from crashing into the hard, stone floor. Sophia took a deep breath, got to her feet, and swayed as she tried to maintain her balance. The dragon's tail stayed wrapped around her waist and refused to release her.
"You are not stable enough to walk without assistance," Eli explained. "You may fall unconscious again."
Sophia gave him a grateful smile. "Thanks for your help."
"Do not mistake it for compassion."
Something about his words stung but Sophia ignored it. She had this unusual feeling for Eli from the moment she saw his human form. She couldn't describe it, but she gathered they would understand each other enough to have a regular acquaintance before the end of their time. It would benefit them if they planned to spend a month within each other's vicinity.
Jennifer sat in class biting her manicured nails out of nervousness, her foot tapping against the cool tile in a rhythmic pattern. She needed out of this room; her worry for Sophia prevented her from focusing on whatever their mentor droned on about. Two weeks passed since their idiotic trip to the Forbidden Forest in search of a dragon. When she and Caiden noticed Sophia hadn't caught up, they back-tracked and found no trace of their friend. There were footprints embedded in the muddied forest floor, but they led to a solid rock wall. No other clues existed to pinpoint her location. It was like the Forbidden Forest swallowed her. Jennifer wrapped her arms around her body after an unpleasant shiver crawled up her spine. The footprints vanished as if something swooped out of the sky and hauled her away. Jennifer switched to a different nail after gnawing the current to oblivion. She tried to focus on the major’s debriefing again, but his voice faded out when h
Sophia resurfaced from underneath the crystal-clear pond. She flipped her darkened brown locks over her head and hooked stray strands of hair behind her ears. A bath was just what she needed. Although Sophia grew accustomed to the humid atmosphere of the cave, all the extra training made her sticky and gross. However, she had long since outgrown her despair over not having things like clean clothes, comb, and personal necessities. Still, she was more than ready to take a scalding hot shower and maybe comb her hair that grew wild and uncontrollable. Thank the heavens, she knew a magic art to prevent her monthly visits. Sophia didn't want to think about the bathroom situation in the vast cave either. She cringed when it crossed her mind. Sophia swam in slow languid strokes to a flat rock surface where her clothes lay. It was located out of Eli's line of vision. Although he was a dragon, when the two of them were not in the Void, he was still a male and she was uncomfor
Sophia had got the hang of using her magic andhand signals in tandem after many failed attempts. She was only moments away from freeing Elijah. Her heart was pounding with anticipation, her hands wereclammy, and there was a bead of sweat trickling down the side of her face. The young woman reached up and twisted her wavy brown locks around her finger. After Gaea visited her in her dream, she knew something was about to happen... somethingserious. She hinted to her that someone Elijah knew of was coming for him. Bane of the Dragons… She knew the dragons were their arch-nemesis. But the dragons haven’t even tried to invade them for so many years now, so why are they going to war with the Dragonae Kingdom? So many questions were wracking her brain. She thought about sharing the dream she had with Elijah or telling him she already knew his name. He deserved to know what would happen. She cared about his wellbeing and the young woman couldn't li
When Sophia had gotten back to the Knights Association, she realized she made quite a fuss... indirectly. Her teammates, even her mentor, asked her what had happened. She made an excuse of getting lost in the forest, wandering in the jungle for a month before she finally got seen by some Higher Knights in patrol. She admitted it was a good excuse as the way she looked was really out of the jungle. Her hair was unkempt and her clothes were all tattered and dirty. She was somehow thankful for Elijah's help with tearing her clothes just like a month would tear it a little bit while on the run. Elijah... After such an intense kiss, Elijah had brought them back to the cave and set her up for her new mission. "Never trust anyone from the Knights Association." She had looked at her teammates after she told them a revision of her story and noted how innocent they looked. Even Zain Anderson whom she knew wasn't much of a showy of his emotions looked b
Her hyperactive teammate sulked as he furiously scrubbed at the dish in his hands. Sophia couldn’t blame him. She thought it was unbearably unfair to promise washing dishes to be the coolest mission they could do, but it was even more so because they were at Leon's favorite restaurant in the city. Leon complained about cleaning dishes, “There shouldn’t be anything left in the bowls. This is the food of the gods." "You were just being sulky for not being allowed to eat any of your favorite noodles while on the mission," Zain deadpanned as he passed him a bowl. After that Leon got all gloomy and silent, mumbling under his breath. Although he did start washing at a much faster pace. She and Zain were hard-pressed to keep up with him. She was willing to admit to herself that she was surprised by both boys' work ethic. With Leon being the loud, boisterous person he was and Zain with his ‘I’m an Anderson. You are beneath me’ attitude, Sophi
The brunette was starting to wonder if Major Dylan examined every possible D-Class mission the King had to offer in hopes of finding the most insane and boring ones he could to annoy his team with as she returned scrolls to their correct shelves. Every mission can be classified as S to E-Class, with S being the most high-end missions that consist of fighting dragons and being the heroes of the kingdom of Laera and E-Class as being the most beginner as one could get. And Team Dylan was currently in the library for a D-Class mission. Their mission was to work as the librarian’s assistants. Sophia’s task was to return checked-in books and scrolls to the right place according to some crazy and confusing filing system, dusting the shelves as she went. Leon was working behind the desk, it being the place where he could cause the least amount of damage or trouble. Zain sat behind the help desk. He was supposed to be helping with questions asked or directing a visito
“What happened to you?” The question came surprisingly, not from Asher or Finn, but from Jackson Evans, who had never spoken to her during her previous training sessions with his team. Sophia grumbled incoherently under her breath about idiots, paints, Major Dylan, books, and noodles. The Evans just gave her a look that said to elucidate. “Leon spilled noodles on Major Dylan’s book, so he got revenge by giving us a mission to repaint the Torture and Interrogation Division in the Knights Association. And then Commander Hades provoked Leon and Zain into a fight and they hit the paint cans and the stupid mission took even longer.” Jackson, Asher, Finn, and Evelyn, who had joined just as she was explaining, blinked at her. “Hn,” the Evans grunted. Finn and Asher, the idiotic father and son, started yelling about how unyouthful Major Dylan was for assigning that mission and her teammates for not behaving as expected and causing unne
Sophia had picked up a few basic earth and water scrolls from the library on her way home. She knew element-based magic was difficult to learn, and if she ever wanted to master her two natures, she would have to start practicing now. Any spare moment she had between early morning training with Asher Jean, then Major Dylan, Asher Jean again, Major Laina, and missions would be spent studying these scrolls and practicing magic. She had no time to spare, her drive to go back to Elijah with her magic channel unrestricted made her move forward. At first, when she discovered that she had two elemental magic, she couldn’t believe it at all. She was not an elemental user, more like adept to illusionary magic – thanks to Elijah – but not the first four elements at all. She knew from Leon, the ability to make clones was a useful one. If she could make water, rock, or mud clones they could be of great help to her. Having an affinity to an element meant she used less magi
Hello, everyone! This is XSkylar19. It has been a very interesting ride for me while writing Bane of the Dragons because (fun fact) this was my very first dragon genre. I know some of you probably disliked how everything turned out or how fastpaced everything happened but know that this was intentional as I couldn't drag the story on. Anyway, while this book becomes the first book for dragon genre, it certainly wasn't my first book in the fantasy genre. The Dance of Fates: Bellatrix was my first fantasy book and I had finished it last year, 2020 so if you can go over my profile, you will find its completed version. I also have a Patreon account, you can find my name "Yeirah de Dieu" and receive trivia, character reveals and bonus chapters for all my books, including "The Dance of Fates" and "Bane of the Dragons". Hopefully, I can write more dragon genre and in time, become familiar with this trope. Until then, thank you for you support
The two men separated and slid to a stop in the dirt. Jackson gaveElijah a wicked grin. "Why don't you destroy me with your true power, Elijah Trueblade, or am I too strong for you?" Elijah exhaled. Jackson Evans’ abilities was obviously improved exponentially over the years as a Knight, but his confidence bordered onarrogance. This Knight failed to understand the severity of the plan Elijah had chosen because of the brainwash the Royal palace did to him.He opened his mouth to voice his thoughts but paused when he felt that familiar pulse of magic. She has returned. Jackson's gaze turned to see Sophia burst out of the bushes, determination written on her face. She didn't stop to talk, but ran to Elijah, performing hand signs as she went. She slammed her hands against Elijah's chest and searched, just like she had when returning him to human form but hoping her hands against his skinwould aid her. "Just what are you doi
If the first and second times are coincidences, and the third is a conspiracy, what the hell was it when she encountered another enemy on sight? How does one person cross paths with more and more danger within the Forbidden Forest? Sophia decided she must have a radar detection system that only picked up the word "danger". That or she was a magnet for insanity. Even without Gaea's encouragement, she had no trouble finding herself in confrontations with traitors. Sophia thought she ought to be grateful that she was too busy swinging her massive sword against two very familiar spandex-uniformed men to realize that the brown haired Knight who was probably their target was present. Her invisibility did not last long. A battle cry was heard behind her before a crash nearly blasted Sophia from her hiding place. Sophia whirled around, uttering a quick thanks to Jennifer for having her back. Then she saw Evelyn looking in their direction. In t
Sophia stopped when she heard the sounds of battle begin. Her heart pounded a mile a minute and her hands shook with adrenaline. Jackson was one of the strongest Knights in the Knight Association. He was not just a High Knight for no reason, which meant both were strong opponents for each other. It was a lot take in at once, but she should be used to outrageous surprises. Sophia shook her head to rid her mind of those thoughts. The question was, what should she do? No one would believe her story of magic, a dragon, and two men who were beyond comprehension. “Sophia!” she heard Caiden’s voice calling out to her. She looked on and saw Caiden, Jennifer and Zac running towards her. “Guys, what are you—” She heard it before she actually heard Jennifer shout. “DRAGONS!” The roar followed and it bursts through the huge trees, knocking down huge trunks not even the earth magic could take down. A large dragon appeared before them. The t
Elijah stared at Sophia as she put a hand on her right chest, his dark eyes glistening despite keeping his emotions in check. She slowly stood and unzipped her top blouse. Elijah opened his mouth to ask what she was doing but when she ripped the right collar of her shirt to the side, he couldn’t let any word out of his mouth. A large scar was etched just above her breast, some parts of it were covered by her bralette, but a large part of the scar was still visible. Images of his weapon embedded into her heart flooded her mind and he looked away. “Is… Is this why I got the scar?” Elijah looked back at her. Sophia dropped her hands to her side and his dark eyes caught her brown ones. “Yes.” Sophia dropped to her knees on the fake ground as she stared at Elijah’s feet. When she asked her mother about the scar, her mother would say this was done by one of the dragon’s talons. She never heard any of her parents say she was not their true daughter. Did they
IT WAS a beautiful day, with birds chirping in the forest trees as they trekked the jungle. Huge trees surrounded them and the sun was barely peeking through the green leaves that shaded them from its heat. The air was colder than outside the Forbidden Forest.Sophia stopped in front of a cave’s mouth, looking up at its high roof before she turned around. Behind her stood Caiden, Zac, and Jennifer. The three nodded at her, telling her that they will be with her until the end.She took a deep breath before she turned back and gazed at the dark inner part of the cave. She’s back…Elijah…She began to walk further into the cave. Somehow, despite being away for several months, the cave’s pathway was still familiar to her. The tunnel was still the same dark tunnel she took before and as she emerged into the other side, her body felt the familiar heat that came from its source. She glanced at the part where the lake was still the
"What do you mean by that?" Caiden asked. Sophia shook her head. “It was just a thought that bothered me for a long time.” “You mean when you came back.” She nodded and took a deep breath. “Look, there’s something I wanted to tell you. But I don’t want you to tell anybody.” Caiden furrowed his eyebrows as he stepped towards her. “If it involves a life threatening secret then I can’t promise that.” When Sophia was going to protest, he waved his hand and leaned against the banister. “Your life is more valuable than any secret you have, Soph. You can’t expect any of us to leave you alone. So if you are going to tell me what’s in your mind,” he turned to her with a serious expression, “you have to trust me that I will stand with you.” Sophia bit her lip again as she blinked her eyes numerous times, preventing the tears that are threatening to fall. She sniffed and wiped her unshed tears before she took a deep breath. “When you, Zac, and Jennifer l
Sophia sat at the dinner table next to Caiden. Normally, she had no problems eating with the Mournflames. However, tonight each one of them was fidgeting. While typical for Altea, the woman was incapable of staying still, displays of nervousness and unease were unheard for Caiden and Andre. It made her uncomfortable and she wanted nothing more than to flee to her room and meditate for a couple more hours. Altea spoke first. “Sophia dear, you know Andre and I consider you to be our own daughter. I’ve always wanted one.” Sophia nodded, uncertain where Caiden’s mother was going with this daughter talk. It made Sophia wonder why she had agreed to marry someone as lazy as Andre who was just as bad if not worse than Caiden. “Well, Andre and I have been discussing, Caiden too, it was his idea,” she added as her son cleared his throat pointedly, “we would like to make it official.” The brunette looked at each Mournflame in turn. Even though she had heard what
Life took on a pattern. She was training day in and day out all day every day, except for when she went on missions. The majority of her missions were with Jackson and Caiden, but about ten percent of them occurred with other High Knights and sometimes from the Palace Knights. The only thing odd about her new routine was her missions with Caiden and Jackson. High Knight teams were fixed like amateur Knight teams. Members for a mission were decided on what skills were needed to complete. Often times you found yourself working with someone you don’t know. But that wasn’t the case with Sophia, Jackson, and Caiden. Ninety percent of their missions were done together. Her training with Helena had increased by an insane degree. She was learning how to think on her feet and could successfully avoid most of her supervisor’s attacks. And just when she thought she had reached the end and it couldn’t get any harder, Helena increased the power behind her attacks, her speed, and
