Jennifer sat in class biting her manicured nails out of nervousness, her foot tapping against the cool tile in a rhythmic pattern. She needed out of this room; her worry for Sophia prevented her from focusing on whatever their mentor droned on about.
Two weeks passed since their idiotic trip to the Forbidden Forest in search of a dragon. When she and Caiden noticed Sophia hadn't caught up, they back-tracked and found no trace of their friend. There were footprints embedded in the muddied forest floor, but they led to a solid rock wall. No other clues existed to pinpoint her location. It was like the Forbidden Forest swallowed her.
Jennifer wrapped her arms around her body after an unpleasant shiver crawled up her spine. The footprints vanished as if something swooped out of the sky and hauled her away.
Jennifer switched to a different nail after gnawing the current to oblivion. She tried to focus on the major’s debriefing again, but his voice faded out when her thoughts wandered off. Her blue eyes glanced at her wrist and she breathed a sigh of relief when she realized that the debriefing will end in four minutes.
Come on now, Major, she begged in her mind, eyes following every tick of the clock on the wall, then switching to a fixation with her watch.
“We will meet again by tomorrow evening. Don’t forget to bring your necessities with you for your first internship,” her mentor reminded them before walking out of the room.
The blonde almost tripped from how fast she jumped from her chair. Jennifer made a beeline for the hallway. She had to know if the Knights Association discovered any evidence concerning Sophia's whereabouts. She pleaded with whatever deity observing them for Sophia's life.
"Jennifer Francis?"
Two men stood behind her. "Yes?" she acknowledged.
One male held up a badge, shoulder-length ebony hair shifting when he did so. "Benjamin Anderson, Investigator from the Knights Association. We need you to come with us. We have a few questions about your friend's disappearance."
Anderson?
Blonde eyebrows raised in confusion. Were they arresting her? Did they think she killed Sophia and lied about her disappearance? She already sat through hours of questioning with the police the moment she and Caiden reported her missing. Five thousand scenarios raced through Jennifer's head and her heart pounded harder with fear. What if she went to prison on false charges?
Officer Benjamin noticed the scared expression on the woman's face and gave her a warm smile. "Don't worry so much. We just want to hear your side of the story."
She gazed at them wearily before nodding. "O-Okay."
Jennifer followed the two men towards the main office of the Knights Association and asked where they were going. Once Officer Benjamin told her, she let her parents know her location through a Faerie, their mode of urgent communication. As they set out into the cube-like transportation, Jennifer gazed out of the window, watching the green landscape blur together from the speed they traveled. Her thoughts focused on her best friend more than a charge accusation of a crime she didn't commit. Above all things, she wished for Sophia's safety.
Once they arrived, Jennifer stepped out; Officer Benjamin motioned towards the building. Inside, people were bustling in every direction, many too busy to make eye contact with her. Officer Benjamin walked towards another older gentleman. His unruly graying hair stuck upwards, making him appear a little menacing. When he gazed over at Jennifer, she couldn't tell if his eyes were open. Well, eye, he covered his left one with a black eyepatch with strings that wrapped around his head. She wondered what happened to him to lose an eye.
"This way Ms. Francis," Officer Benjamin said while continuing down the bland hallway.
They arrived at a door and once she was inside, the young Knight studied her surroundings: gray walls, a mahogany desk with three chairs by it, and a camera on a stand sitting in one corner. Jennifer understood that this wasn't a questioning; it would be an interrogation.
"Have a seat."
Jennifer obeyed their request and sat down on the wooden chair, shivering when her body adjusted to the chill air in the room.
"Just wait right here, Ms. Francis. It will be just a moment."
Jennifer nodded and waited in silence for this person to come to talk to her. Every second ticked by like minutes. She wished she were at home. She wanted her father to be here as childish as it sounded. Fear racked Jennifer's body. As she gazed at her hands clenched in her lap, a crystal tear slipped down her cheek.
The door creaked open and when Jennifer looked up, a look of shock crossed her features. "Zain? What are you doing here?"
The dark-haired Knight - and her best friend's teammate and long-time crush - regarded her in silence before sitting across the table from her. The dark-eyed male slouched in his chair and gave her a lazy look as he leaned his forearms on the table between them. "Can I get you something to drink?"
"I'm fine, thanks," Jennifer relaxed a little with someone familiar. She wondered why Zain was here, but she figured out quickly. "Is that man your father?"
Zain leaned further forward and placed his hands on the table, palms down on the surface, his dark eyes more serious than usual. "We have more important things to discuss. What happened on your trip to Forbidden Forest two weeks ago?"
Jennifer didn't know if he was qualified to interrogate her. Doubtful since they were both in the Knights Association as newly recruited, but maybe he would understand better.
~O~O~O~
Sophia fell into her fighting stance Eli taught her and awaited his critique. "How was that?"
"Better. You understand the basics of hand-to-hand combat and how to control your magic."
The young woman let her hands fall to her sides. "I still don't get why I have to learn how to fight. How do I free you, anyway?"
Eli motioned for her to follow him and she did, the black and red surroundings she had grown accustomed to flowing in its usual pattern. The two of them walked over to a river red as blood. Eli sat down on a large black rock and Sophia stared at him for a few moments. It still shocked her to see how attractive Eli was in his human form. As illusionary as it seemed, Sophia looked forward to the time they spent in the Void world so she could witness him as a human. It sounded idiotic. Why would she be interested in a man forcing her to stay here with him?
Sophia shook her head to ward off those unwanted thoughts. Unfortunately, she didn't get to decide who she developed a romantic interest in; that was her heart's decision. She tried to ignore the butterflies in her stomach any time she and Eli entered the world of his magic. Her anticipation at seeing his human form again grew whenever Eli pulled her into the imaginary world. His handsomeness rivaled models of her time. However, after seeing him in his human figure and studying his features, Sophia couldn't shake the nagging feeling that Eli was familiar to her.
Eli got locked away years before her birth, making it impossible for them to know each other, but something about his eyes made her wonder. The inky darkness of them when he deactivated his Void caused a twinge of familiarity in her chest. Eli stood by the swirling river while Sophia took her place on a large rock jutting over it. Her ability to sense magic advanced to an impressive level. She now recognized magic moving through her surroundings. Eli explained that everything in the Void world held a level of magic. It enhanced her ability for sensing and controlling it.
Sophia placed her elbows on her knees and studied Eli while waiting for an explanation of the method to his release. A small, innocent smile worked its way over her features as she saw the wind tussling Elijah's dark hair around his face.
"A certain spell is what you'll use to break this curse," Eli began. "It has to blend some chanting and hand signs called spell and your magic together. Your control is better but bringing forth your magic for a spell requires much more concentration and precise control. I will teach you how to do the hand signs and use your magic simultaneously. Then I will teach you the specific spell you need to reverse the one placed on me."
Sophia pulled her legs up to her chin. "I've already been here for two weeks. Is it going to take long to learn how to create a spell then learn the specific one?"
Eli turned around and moved to sit next to her on the dark boulder. "It is not as simple as you may think. You have good control, but it has to be perfect. I want you to channel the magic into the soles of your feet and walk across the river."
Dark chocolate brown eyes widened with surprise. "You want me to walk on water? Do you think I'm Naruto or something?"
The blank expression on Eli's face reminded her he wouldn't have a clue what she was talking about. Sophia chuckled before standing to her feet and walking to the river's edge. Sophia took a deep breath to clear her mind. She could do this. The new magic user had no choice because if she wanted to go home, she needed to free Eli from his curse.
Placing one foot out, Sophia concentrated the flow of her magic and saw the usual light blue glow appear around it just like when the Knights cast magic with their element. She stepped onto the water, surprised by the rigid feel underneath her weight. Sophia did the same thing with her other leg and smirked when she stood solidly on the water's surface. The brunette's smile wavered when the magic flickered underneath her, the crisp water covering her bare feet. Within seconds, she was underwater.
The shocked young woman came up sputtering, taken aback at how deep the water was. She looked over to see Eli staring at her. A sparkle in his dark eyes caught her attention.
Sophia frowned. "Do you think that was funny?"
After brushing her wet locks out of her face, Sophia climbed out of the warm current. She walked over to Eli who followed her approach.
"With your confidence, your expression when you failed was amusing."
"Well, aren't you a charmer," Sophia muttered, sarcasm lacing her words.
Eli's eyes regarded the drenched woman in front of him. Her ability as a Knight - no, as a magic user was promising. She excelled in beginner magic usage, a feat not easily attainable for someone who couldn't even master an element before.
The point of teaching her fighting techniques was to improve her dexterity with her magic and allow Sophia to channel it at will. Eli's eyes shifted to her hand as Sophia flipped her wet hair over her shoulder. He felt annoyance and irritation at first whenever he watched her, but now he felt nothing any time his gaze lingered on her longer than it should. The dragon had grown accustomed to her. Not quite fond of her but having company after so many years left a strange ache in his chest.
Sophia took her place in front of him on the rock, leaned forward, and placed her hands on her knees. Their faces were only inches apart. "Having fun staring into space?"
Eli didn't respond, but his eyes locked with Sophia's brown ones. After a few seconds, a blush appeared underneath her cheeks. Sophia's right hand moved from her knee and stopped a few inches from the side of his neck.
"Eli..." she whispered. "I think I may be... I'm not sure if..."
What was this woman saying to him? Eli waited for her to continue, mild interest in her next words filled him.
"You're a monster, Elijah!"
Eli blinked when those words echoed in his ears and once he returned focus to Sophia, his eyes widened when he saw her hair turned as dark as his own. He gazed around at his surroundings, realizing he was in a house. The mass murderer recognized the dirt floor immediately. Sophia laid on the ground, blood dripping from a wound in her side.
"You have betrayed our heritage and risked the lives of thousands for more power. All the Trueblade have and because of your treason, you will pay with your lives."
That was his voice, but his mouth wasn't moving. Eli figured out what caused this vision: because he focused his full attention on Sophia, he lessened his control of the Void. It now locked him in the midst of his own manipulation. When Eli looked closer, he realized that this was not Sophia, but... her.
"Elena, you are not someone I would suspect to harbor a lust for war."
His fiance... this illusion displayed memories of his family's destruction. This moment caused the most agony and nightmares: the second he had to end her life.
Eli... Eli...
That wasn't Elena's voice, as similar as it seems to be; it was Sophia's. He flared his magic to its max ability and when he blinked, he returned to the correct Void world with Sophia giving him a concerned look. Her hands rested on each side of his face. Eli heard her soft breathing due to her closeness.
"Eli, are you okay?" she questioned. "You just kind of spaced out. What happened?"
The male stood up, pulling from her warm grasp. "I am fine. Do not touch me unless I give you permission."
Sophia frowned and crossed her arms over her chest. "Asshole," she muttered.
"Continue using your magic to walk across the water," he instructed while moving over to one of the large shadow-covered trees.
Sophia watched Eli walk away. Something happened. He spaced out for a second, staring ahead with a blank expression on his features. When he came to, he tried to distance himself from her.
Eli would never admit why he separated himself from her by at least fifty feet, but his actions told the story for him. Her curiosity about him tripled. What just went through his head?
Sophia resurfaced from underneath the crystal-clear pond. She flipped her darkened brown locks over her head and hooked stray strands of hair behind her ears. A bath was just what she needed. Although Sophia grew accustomed to the humid atmosphere of the cave, all the extra training made her sticky and gross. However, she had long since outgrown her despair over not having things like clean clothes, comb, and personal necessities. Still, she was more than ready to take a scalding hot shower and maybe comb her hair that grew wild and uncontrollable. Thank the heavens, she knew a magic art to prevent her monthly visits. Sophia didn't want to think about the bathroom situation in the vast cave either. She cringed when it crossed her mind. Sophia swam in slow languid strokes to a flat rock surface where her clothes lay. It was located out of Eli's line of vision. Although he was a dragon, when the two of them were not in the Void, he was still a male and she was uncomfor
Sophia had got the hang of using her magic andhand signals in tandem after many failed attempts. She was only moments away from freeing Elijah. Her heart was pounding with anticipation, her hands wereclammy, and there was a bead of sweat trickling down the side of her face. The young woman reached up and twisted her wavy brown locks around her finger. After Gaea visited her in her dream, she knew something was about to happen... somethingserious. She hinted to her that someone Elijah knew of was coming for him. Bane of the Dragons… She knew the dragons were their arch-nemesis. But the dragons haven’t even tried to invade them for so many years now, so why are they going to war with the Dragonae Kingdom? So many questions were wracking her brain. She thought about sharing the dream she had with Elijah or telling him she already knew his name. He deserved to know what would happen. She cared about his wellbeing and the young woman couldn't li
When Sophia had gotten back to the Knights Association, she realized she made quite a fuss... indirectly. Her teammates, even her mentor, asked her what had happened. She made an excuse of getting lost in the forest, wandering in the jungle for a month before she finally got seen by some Higher Knights in patrol. She admitted it was a good excuse as the way she looked was really out of the jungle. Her hair was unkempt and her clothes were all tattered and dirty. She was somehow thankful for Elijah's help with tearing her clothes just like a month would tear it a little bit while on the run. Elijah... After such an intense kiss, Elijah had brought them back to the cave and set her up for her new mission. "Never trust anyone from the Knights Association." She had looked at her teammates after she told them a revision of her story and noted how innocent they looked. Even Zain Anderson whom she knew wasn't much of a showy of his emotions looked b
Her hyperactive teammate sulked as he furiously scrubbed at the dish in his hands. Sophia couldn’t blame him. She thought it was unbearably unfair to promise washing dishes to be the coolest mission they could do, but it was even more so because they were at Leon's favorite restaurant in the city. Leon complained about cleaning dishes, “There shouldn’t be anything left in the bowls. This is the food of the gods." "You were just being sulky for not being allowed to eat any of your favorite noodles while on the mission," Zain deadpanned as he passed him a bowl. After that Leon got all gloomy and silent, mumbling under his breath. Although he did start washing at a much faster pace. She and Zain were hard-pressed to keep up with him. She was willing to admit to herself that she was surprised by both boys' work ethic. With Leon being the loud, boisterous person he was and Zain with his ‘I’m an Anderson. You are beneath me’ attitude, Sophi
The brunette was starting to wonder if Major Dylan examined every possible D-Class mission the King had to offer in hopes of finding the most insane and boring ones he could to annoy his team with as she returned scrolls to their correct shelves. Every mission can be classified as S to E-Class, with S being the most high-end missions that consist of fighting dragons and being the heroes of the kingdom of Laera and E-Class as being the most beginner as one could get. And Team Dylan was currently in the library for a D-Class mission. Their mission was to work as the librarian’s assistants. Sophia’s task was to return checked-in books and scrolls to the right place according to some crazy and confusing filing system, dusting the shelves as she went. Leon was working behind the desk, it being the place where he could cause the least amount of damage or trouble. Zain sat behind the help desk. He was supposed to be helping with questions asked or directing a visito
“What happened to you?” The question came surprisingly, not from Asher or Finn, but from Jackson Evans, who had never spoken to her during her previous training sessions with his team. Sophia grumbled incoherently under her breath about idiots, paints, Major Dylan, books, and noodles. The Evans just gave her a look that said to elucidate. “Leon spilled noodles on Major Dylan’s book, so he got revenge by giving us a mission to repaint the Torture and Interrogation Division in the Knights Association. And then Commander Hades provoked Leon and Zain into a fight and they hit the paint cans and the stupid mission took even longer.” Jackson, Asher, Finn, and Evelyn, who had joined just as she was explaining, blinked at her. “Hn,” the Evans grunted. Finn and Asher, the idiotic father and son, started yelling about how unyouthful Major Dylan was for assigning that mission and her teammates for not behaving as expected and causing unne
Sophia had picked up a few basic earth and water scrolls from the library on her way home. She knew element-based magic was difficult to learn, and if she ever wanted to master her two natures, she would have to start practicing now. Any spare moment she had between early morning training with Asher Jean, then Major Dylan, Asher Jean again, Major Laina, and missions would be spent studying these scrolls and practicing magic. She had no time to spare, her drive to go back to Elijah with her magic channel unrestricted made her move forward. At first, when she discovered that she had two elemental magic, she couldn’t believe it at all. She was not an elemental user, more like adept to illusionary magic – thanks to Elijah – but not the first four elements at all. She knew from Leon, the ability to make clones was a useful one. If she could make water, rock, or mud clones they could be of great help to her. Having an affinity to an element meant she used less magi
She wished she was as pleased with the client as she was with the mission. When Knight had told them it was an escort mission, Sophia had gotten excited. A C-Class escort mission meant some trouble along the road, most likely bandits and thieves. None of Team Dylan had expected to be protecting a bridge builder. A drunk one at that who insulted them and didn’t believe that they are capable of performing their duty and protecting him. Lak Point was a village in the southern part of the Laera Kingdom. It was an island in the high tide and a large land that connected to the town of Treellen in the low tide. Anouk, the master bridge builder from Lak Point was a drunk, slightly miserly, grouchy old man, that disliked everyone but Major Dylan and kept insulting the younger Knights. Sophia had to repress the urge to strangle him every time he said something along the lines of a girl being a Knight and how she should just quit and find a man to settle down with. Just
Hello, everyone! This is XSkylar19. It has been a very interesting ride for me while writing Bane of the Dragons because (fun fact) this was my very first dragon genre. I know some of you probably disliked how everything turned out or how fastpaced everything happened but know that this was intentional as I couldn't drag the story on. Anyway, while this book becomes the first book for dragon genre, it certainly wasn't my first book in the fantasy genre. The Dance of Fates: Bellatrix was my first fantasy book and I had finished it last year, 2020 so if you can go over my profile, you will find its completed version. I also have a Patreon account, you can find my name "Yeirah de Dieu" and receive trivia, character reveals and bonus chapters for all my books, including "The Dance of Fates" and "Bane of the Dragons". Hopefully, I can write more dragon genre and in time, become familiar with this trope. Until then, thank you for you support
The two men separated and slid to a stop in the dirt. Jackson gaveElijah a wicked grin. "Why don't you destroy me with your true power, Elijah Trueblade, or am I too strong for you?" Elijah exhaled. Jackson Evans’ abilities was obviously improved exponentially over the years as a Knight, but his confidence bordered onarrogance. This Knight failed to understand the severity of the plan Elijah had chosen because of the brainwash the Royal palace did to him.He opened his mouth to voice his thoughts but paused when he felt that familiar pulse of magic. She has returned. Jackson's gaze turned to see Sophia burst out of the bushes, determination written on her face. She didn't stop to talk, but ran to Elijah, performing hand signs as she went. She slammed her hands against Elijah's chest and searched, just like she had when returning him to human form but hoping her hands against his skinwould aid her. "Just what are you doi
If the first and second times are coincidences, and the third is a conspiracy, what the hell was it when she encountered another enemy on sight? How does one person cross paths with more and more danger within the Forbidden Forest? Sophia decided she must have a radar detection system that only picked up the word "danger". That or she was a magnet for insanity. Even without Gaea's encouragement, she had no trouble finding herself in confrontations with traitors. Sophia thought she ought to be grateful that she was too busy swinging her massive sword against two very familiar spandex-uniformed men to realize that the brown haired Knight who was probably their target was present. Her invisibility did not last long. A battle cry was heard behind her before a crash nearly blasted Sophia from her hiding place. Sophia whirled around, uttering a quick thanks to Jennifer for having her back. Then she saw Evelyn looking in their direction. In t
Sophia stopped when she heard the sounds of battle begin. Her heart pounded a mile a minute and her hands shook with adrenaline. Jackson was one of the strongest Knights in the Knight Association. He was not just a High Knight for no reason, which meant both were strong opponents for each other. It was a lot take in at once, but she should be used to outrageous surprises. Sophia shook her head to rid her mind of those thoughts. The question was, what should she do? No one would believe her story of magic, a dragon, and two men who were beyond comprehension. “Sophia!” she heard Caiden’s voice calling out to her. She looked on and saw Caiden, Jennifer and Zac running towards her. “Guys, what are you—” She heard it before she actually heard Jennifer shout. “DRAGONS!” The roar followed and it bursts through the huge trees, knocking down huge trunks not even the earth magic could take down. A large dragon appeared before them. The t
Elijah stared at Sophia as she put a hand on her right chest, his dark eyes glistening despite keeping his emotions in check. She slowly stood and unzipped her top blouse. Elijah opened his mouth to ask what she was doing but when she ripped the right collar of her shirt to the side, he couldn’t let any word out of his mouth. A large scar was etched just above her breast, some parts of it were covered by her bralette, but a large part of the scar was still visible. Images of his weapon embedded into her heart flooded her mind and he looked away. “Is… Is this why I got the scar?” Elijah looked back at her. Sophia dropped her hands to her side and his dark eyes caught her brown ones. “Yes.” Sophia dropped to her knees on the fake ground as she stared at Elijah’s feet. When she asked her mother about the scar, her mother would say this was done by one of the dragon’s talons. She never heard any of her parents say she was not their true daughter. Did they
IT WAS a beautiful day, with birds chirping in the forest trees as they trekked the jungle. Huge trees surrounded them and the sun was barely peeking through the green leaves that shaded them from its heat. The air was colder than outside the Forbidden Forest.Sophia stopped in front of a cave’s mouth, looking up at its high roof before she turned around. Behind her stood Caiden, Zac, and Jennifer. The three nodded at her, telling her that they will be with her until the end.She took a deep breath before she turned back and gazed at the dark inner part of the cave. She’s back…Elijah…She began to walk further into the cave. Somehow, despite being away for several months, the cave’s pathway was still familiar to her. The tunnel was still the same dark tunnel she took before and as she emerged into the other side, her body felt the familiar heat that came from its source. She glanced at the part where the lake was still the
"What do you mean by that?" Caiden asked. Sophia shook her head. “It was just a thought that bothered me for a long time.” “You mean when you came back.” She nodded and took a deep breath. “Look, there’s something I wanted to tell you. But I don’t want you to tell anybody.” Caiden furrowed his eyebrows as he stepped towards her. “If it involves a life threatening secret then I can’t promise that.” When Sophia was going to protest, he waved his hand and leaned against the banister. “Your life is more valuable than any secret you have, Soph. You can’t expect any of us to leave you alone. So if you are going to tell me what’s in your mind,” he turned to her with a serious expression, “you have to trust me that I will stand with you.” Sophia bit her lip again as she blinked her eyes numerous times, preventing the tears that are threatening to fall. She sniffed and wiped her unshed tears before she took a deep breath. “When you, Zac, and Jennifer l
Sophia sat at the dinner table next to Caiden. Normally, she had no problems eating with the Mournflames. However, tonight each one of them was fidgeting. While typical for Altea, the woman was incapable of staying still, displays of nervousness and unease were unheard for Caiden and Andre. It made her uncomfortable and she wanted nothing more than to flee to her room and meditate for a couple more hours. Altea spoke first. “Sophia dear, you know Andre and I consider you to be our own daughter. I’ve always wanted one.” Sophia nodded, uncertain where Caiden’s mother was going with this daughter talk. It made Sophia wonder why she had agreed to marry someone as lazy as Andre who was just as bad if not worse than Caiden. “Well, Andre and I have been discussing, Caiden too, it was his idea,” she added as her son cleared his throat pointedly, “we would like to make it official.” The brunette looked at each Mournflame in turn. Even though she had heard what
Life took on a pattern. She was training day in and day out all day every day, except for when she went on missions. The majority of her missions were with Jackson and Caiden, but about ten percent of them occurred with other High Knights and sometimes from the Palace Knights. The only thing odd about her new routine was her missions with Caiden and Jackson. High Knight teams were fixed like amateur Knight teams. Members for a mission were decided on what skills were needed to complete. Often times you found yourself working with someone you don’t know. But that wasn’t the case with Sophia, Jackson, and Caiden. Ninety percent of their missions were done together. Her training with Helena had increased by an insane degree. She was learning how to think on her feet and could successfully avoid most of her supervisor’s attacks. And just when she thought she had reached the end and it couldn’t get any harder, Helena increased the power behind her attacks, her speed, and
