Sophia resurfaced from underneath the crystal-clear pond. She flipped her darkened brown locks over her head and hooked stray strands of hair behind her ears. A bath was just what she needed. Although Sophia grew accustomed to the humid atmosphere of the cave, all the extra training made her sticky and gross. However, she had long since outgrown her despair over not having things like clean clothes, comb, and personal necessities.
Still, she was more than ready to take a scalding hot shower and maybe comb her hair that grew wild and uncontrollable. Thank the heavens, she knew a magic art to prevent her monthly visits. Sophia didn't want to think about the bathroom situation in the vast cave either. She cringed when it crossed her mind.
Sophia swam in slow languid strokes to a flat rock surface where her clothes lay. It was located out of Eli's line of vision. Although he was a dragon, when the two of them were not in the Void, he was still a male and she was uncomfortable undressing in front of him. Sophia hauled herself up onto the warm surface and reached for a rock a little smaller than the middle of her palm. Its rough exterior rubbed against her fingertips as she drew another line on the wall to match the collection she accumulated over the last few weeks.
Three weeks in this hell hole passed. One more and she would be free. On this rock, she shed many tears and experienced a lot of unquenchable anger. No matter what, she hated Eli for forcing her to stay in this piece of a shit cave with nothing to do but endure torture from her thoughts. That was one reason Sophia threw herself so hard into their training. Sophia wanted to be one hundred percent sure she could perform this spell to remove Eli's curse.
One question that plagued her often was what would happen once Eli's curse lifted. Was he only immortal because of it? If not, how would he adapt to today's society? What were his plans to live out the rest of his life?
Sophia's brows knitted in frustration. Why did she follow Jennifer's stupid ass hunch? If she didn't, this whole situation would have never happened. Sophia even tried to escape once out of the tunnel she rushed through the day she encountered Eli, but it no longer existed. A stone wall mocked her a few feet into the tunnel to Eli’s amusement.
After sitting for a while and letting her skin dry, the young woman put her clothes back on and walked to Eli’s cave. She took one glance at her reflection in the water before walking inside. Her hair grew a few inches and maintained a wavy appearance without her flat iron’s assistance in keeping it in place. Disheveled bangs filtered over her eyes, so Sophia swept them to the left side of her face, a face that lost its roundness from working out and cutting all unhealthy habits out of her diet.
"Sophia."
"Yes?" she called, the warmth of the cave engulfing her.
There was the sound of chains shifting before he replied, "We will return to the Void and I will teach you the chant and signs of the spell. Combine this with your magic to release me."
Those words brought joy to her heart, but also dread. The realization that she was freeing a mass murderer hit her like a freight train. She knew it all along, but because it was far off, Sophia pushed it out of her mind. What if he killed innocent people again? Her thoughts stopped when Eli's eyes spun. The sucking sensation Sophia was familiar with pulled her and soon the crimson and black world of the Void was surrounding them. Eli moved in front of her in his human form. Sophia's face hid her emotions, but in her mind, her hatred and infatuation were at war with each other. Every time she saw this tall, handsome figure gazing down at her, confusion twisted her soul.
"Let's practice your hand-to-hand combat with your magic to warm up," Eli said, taking a step back.
Sophia responded by pushing her magic through its channel to her fist and moving at lightning speed towards her opponent.
How far this girl came within such a short amount of time impressed Eli. He blocked a kick aimed at his head and felt the power behind it. She excelled at close contact fighting. Eli watched her pull a full-grown tree out of the ground by its roots and smash a large crater into the ground during their training. She discovered how to make her magic work to her advantage when it comes to physical combat.
Eli and Sophia continued their spar for a few more minutes before he signaled for them to stop. "Now, there are seven hand signs with this spell along with the chant you will have to perform with it," Eli said. "Pay close attention."
He showed her the first three signs and then told her to repeat them. The first two Sophia mirrored with ease. The third one, she struggled with.
"Like this." The Void magic-user moved beside her and held her hand to place them in the right position... they were so soft. Despite all the training they did, they lacked the dryness that often accompanied combat.
Eli locked eyes with his prisoner and she gazed back at him with those dark brown eyes. They were so close together... and getting closer. His dark eyes left hers and traveled down her cute button nose until it stopped on her luscious pink lips parting as if waiting for his move.
That strange twinge in his chest reared its head and Eli let go a second later. He inwardly let go of the breath he didn't know he was holding. What was he doing? There were more important things to consider. His freedom danced within his grasp, only a week... and the most important battle of the world's life loomed overhead.
"Try again," he said with his voice as void as the world they were currently in.
Sophia laid down after her bland meal. Over time, she discovered a grass at the bottom of the pond that when cooked with the fish gave it a seasoned flavor. Sometimes it was a good change of pace from the smoky flavor from Eli's flames. She also used the branches from the small forest in the corner of her large prison from time to time. Sophia preferred not to; it made the surrounding area hotter and that was not wanted. Sophia decided after this was over, she would never eat fish again.
The spell training wore her out. Once she got to the third sign, which was when the chant started, she felt as if all her magic was being drained from her. Eli said it was because the magic was drawn and pulled towards her palms, but she had to learn how to continue the flow of it until the last word and hand sign. That proved harder than Sophia imagined. It was like playing tug of war with an elephant.
Still, the vision of his hands on top of hers and how his eyes gazed down her lips stuck in her mind. A warm sensation started in the pit of her stomach and when they locked eyes, everything else seemed to melt away. However, Sophia's exhaustion took over and tired eyes closed. Within moments she was asleep in a patch of grass, an arm was thrown over her face.
Once again Sophia was running through the inky darkness. That eerie voice that had been haunting her resonated deep within her mind, causing terror to choke her. There was no escape, no way out. The eclipsed area loomed around her, threatening to throw her into madness.
Suddenly, there was a tiny spot of light that seemed like it was millions of miles away, but the faster she ran, the bigger the area of light grew. Hope flooded Sophia's body as she tried to use her magic to make her legs run faster. Something was trying to slow her down, but she pressed on until finally, she threw herself into the embrace of the light. Sophia put an arm over her eyes to shield them from her bright surroundings. After a few moments, it darkened, and brown eyes opened to study the new area. A warm drop hit her nose and the young woman looked up to see a darkened grey sky.
"Sophia..."
It was that voice, but no fear gripped her. It wanted her to follow it, acknowledge it speaking to her. Sophia moved through what manifested as the Forbidden Forest towards the voice. Was this a dream? Did she manage to escape Eli's cave?
"Sophia..."
Sophia whirled around to see a figure standing behind her. She wore a pale white dress that reached her ankles. She was barefooted and her dress seemed to be a little older in fashion sense. Her skin was pale as moonlight and her dark brown hair starkly contrasted her bright green eyes. The blue ring circling her pupil was as unique as Eli’s red eyes when he drag her to his Void. What caught her attention the most was the piercings that lined her arms. Were those even piercings? They looked like knobs being buried down her skin.
"Sophia, the war of the Knights and Dragons continues."
Sophia moved her soaked locks out of her face. "What do you mean?"
"Once you return that dragon to his human form, the battle started decades ago will return."
That's what she was worried about, but her involvement ran far too deep. If she freed Eli, would dozens of innocent people die? If Eli killed his entire clan, Sophia knew the lives of strangers meant nothing. She still didn't know the motive behind Eli's actions. There must be a reason why he believed he had to destroy them.
"I don't know what to do," Sophia whispered. "Wait, who are you?"
"I am Gaea," she answered with a smile.
Gaea... that was a name he mentioned before.
"Wait... you are the previous queen. The first queen of the kingdom of Laera. Queen Gaea," she stuttered out.
Gaea merely smiled at her. Sophia went to bow deep before the queen. She was supposed to be dead. So, this was a dream?
"Rise, my Knight," Gaea said in a soft motherly tone. When Sophia rose to her feet and looked at the queen, the latter continued, "I placed the curse on Elijah to keep him away from the Knights. He believes his form is the only punishment for delivering pain to his family without my order. They've found Elijah. The bane of the dragons is what they seek to destroy."
Elijah? That must be Eli's true name...
"What is a bane of the dragons?" Sophia questioned. "Who is after him? What am I supposed to do?"
Gaea moved swiftly towards her and pressed two fingers into the center of her chest. Searing pain radiated from the area, causing the female to fall to her knees, gasping for air.
"Defeat the dragons, Sophia. You must become the bane of the dragons. Not Elijah."
She placed her hands on the ground in front of her, breathing hard as the pain burned through her entire body. From the beginning, Sophia knew Eli - no, Elijah’s story had more pages than what he led on. This Gaea, whoever she is, protected him from the dragons, meaning he didn’t really kill his family, did he? What truth remained hidden concerning the massacre of his family? Sophia believed she was wrapped too far into their lives not to have knowledge of the full story. It was time Elijah came clean about everything. As the pain slowly dissipated, Sophia’s brown eyes met those of the queen before her, defiance written in them.
“I will hear Elijah’s side before I do anything. I am not stronger than him, so I don’t understand why you think I play such a huge role. Once I figure it out, then I decide what I will do, not you, not Elijah.”
Gaea's expression didn’t change nor did she utter a response. But in her mind, the queen thought that this woman indeed may save the world from the dangers looming close by...
...or perhaps kill all of them in Laera.
Sophia had got the hang of using her magic andhand signals in tandem after many failed attempts. She was only moments away from freeing Elijah. Her heart was pounding with anticipation, her hands wereclammy, and there was a bead of sweat trickling down the side of her face. The young woman reached up and twisted her wavy brown locks around her finger. After Gaea visited her in her dream, she knew something was about to happen... somethingserious. She hinted to her that someone Elijah knew of was coming for him. Bane of the Dragons… She knew the dragons were their arch-nemesis. But the dragons haven’t even tried to invade them for so many years now, so why are they going to war with the Dragonae Kingdom? So many questions were wracking her brain. She thought about sharing the dream she had with Elijah or telling him she already knew his name. He deserved to know what would happen. She cared about his wellbeing and the young woman couldn't li
When Sophia had gotten back to the Knights Association, she realized she made quite a fuss... indirectly. Her teammates, even her mentor, asked her what had happened. She made an excuse of getting lost in the forest, wandering in the jungle for a month before she finally got seen by some Higher Knights in patrol. She admitted it was a good excuse as the way she looked was really out of the jungle. Her hair was unkempt and her clothes were all tattered and dirty. She was somehow thankful for Elijah's help with tearing her clothes just like a month would tear it a little bit while on the run. Elijah... After such an intense kiss, Elijah had brought them back to the cave and set her up for her new mission. "Never trust anyone from the Knights Association." She had looked at her teammates after she told them a revision of her story and noted how innocent they looked. Even Zain Anderson whom she knew wasn't much of a showy of his emotions looked b
Her hyperactive teammate sulked as he furiously scrubbed at the dish in his hands. Sophia couldn’t blame him. She thought it was unbearably unfair to promise washing dishes to be the coolest mission they could do, but it was even more so because they were at Leon's favorite restaurant in the city. Leon complained about cleaning dishes, “There shouldn’t be anything left in the bowls. This is the food of the gods." "You were just being sulky for not being allowed to eat any of your favorite noodles while on the mission," Zain deadpanned as he passed him a bowl. After that Leon got all gloomy and silent, mumbling under his breath. Although he did start washing at a much faster pace. She and Zain were hard-pressed to keep up with him. She was willing to admit to herself that she was surprised by both boys' work ethic. With Leon being the loud, boisterous person he was and Zain with his ‘I’m an Anderson. You are beneath me’ attitude, Sophi
The brunette was starting to wonder if Major Dylan examined every possible D-Class mission the King had to offer in hopes of finding the most insane and boring ones he could to annoy his team with as she returned scrolls to their correct shelves. Every mission can be classified as S to E-Class, with S being the most high-end missions that consist of fighting dragons and being the heroes of the kingdom of Laera and E-Class as being the most beginner as one could get. And Team Dylan was currently in the library for a D-Class mission. Their mission was to work as the librarian’s assistants. Sophia’s task was to return checked-in books and scrolls to the right place according to some crazy and confusing filing system, dusting the shelves as she went. Leon was working behind the desk, it being the place where he could cause the least amount of damage or trouble. Zain sat behind the help desk. He was supposed to be helping with questions asked or directing a visito
“What happened to you?” The question came surprisingly, not from Asher or Finn, but from Jackson Evans, who had never spoken to her during her previous training sessions with his team. Sophia grumbled incoherently under her breath about idiots, paints, Major Dylan, books, and noodles. The Evans just gave her a look that said to elucidate. “Leon spilled noodles on Major Dylan’s book, so he got revenge by giving us a mission to repaint the Torture and Interrogation Division in the Knights Association. And then Commander Hades provoked Leon and Zain into a fight and they hit the paint cans and the stupid mission took even longer.” Jackson, Asher, Finn, and Evelyn, who had joined just as she was explaining, blinked at her. “Hn,” the Evans grunted. Finn and Asher, the idiotic father and son, started yelling about how unyouthful Major Dylan was for assigning that mission and her teammates for not behaving as expected and causing unne
Sophia had picked up a few basic earth and water scrolls from the library on her way home. She knew element-based magic was difficult to learn, and if she ever wanted to master her two natures, she would have to start practicing now. Any spare moment she had between early morning training with Asher Jean, then Major Dylan, Asher Jean again, Major Laina, and missions would be spent studying these scrolls and practicing magic. She had no time to spare, her drive to go back to Elijah with her magic channel unrestricted made her move forward. At first, when she discovered that she had two elemental magic, she couldn’t believe it at all. She was not an elemental user, more like adept to illusionary magic – thanks to Elijah – but not the first four elements at all. She knew from Leon, the ability to make clones was a useful one. If she could make water, rock, or mud clones they could be of great help to her. Having an affinity to an element meant she used less magi
She wished she was as pleased with the client as she was with the mission. When Knight had told them it was an escort mission, Sophia had gotten excited. A C-Class escort mission meant some trouble along the road, most likely bandits and thieves. None of Team Dylan had expected to be protecting a bridge builder. A drunk one at that who insulted them and didn’t believe that they are capable of performing their duty and protecting him. Lak Point was a village in the southern part of the Laera Kingdom. It was an island in the high tide and a large land that connected to the town of Treellen in the low tide. Anouk, the master bridge builder from Lak Point was a drunk, slightly miserly, grouchy old man, that disliked everyone but Major Dylan and kept insulting the younger Knights. Sophia had to repress the urge to strangle him every time he said something along the lines of a girl being a Knight and how she should just quit and find a man to settle down with. Just
There are three types of Knights in the association: (1) the High Knights who were the ones closest to the royal family of the Laera Kingdom; (2) the warriors, the Knights who received missions from the High Knights through the Head of the Knights Association, and; (3) the mentors, who mold the Knights for three years into strong, capable warriors. Major Dylan watched horrified as his students charged at the water clone. Leon created dozens of his own which dog piled the Aidan water clone. Sophia, Zain, and the real Leon ran around the wiggling mass of magic clones and shot towards the real Aidan holding him captive. He had told them to run away! They were no match for a rogue Knight like Aidan. If they tried to fight him they would die. Major Dylan didn’t want to watch any more of his comrades die. Especially not the team he was supposed to be teaching to become great warriors. Leon had made more clones to act as a line of defense as the three Knights bore d
Hello, everyone! This is XSkylar19. It has been a very interesting ride for me while writing Bane of the Dragons because (fun fact) this was my very first dragon genre. I know some of you probably disliked how everything turned out or how fastpaced everything happened but know that this was intentional as I couldn't drag the story on. Anyway, while this book becomes the first book for dragon genre, it certainly wasn't my first book in the fantasy genre. The Dance of Fates: Bellatrix was my first fantasy book and I had finished it last year, 2020 so if you can go over my profile, you will find its completed version. I also have a Patreon account, you can find my name "Yeirah de Dieu" and receive trivia, character reveals and bonus chapters for all my books, including "The Dance of Fates" and "Bane of the Dragons". Hopefully, I can write more dragon genre and in time, become familiar with this trope. Until then, thank you for you support
The two men separated and slid to a stop in the dirt. Jackson gaveElijah a wicked grin. "Why don't you destroy me with your true power, Elijah Trueblade, or am I too strong for you?" Elijah exhaled. Jackson Evans’ abilities was obviously improved exponentially over the years as a Knight, but his confidence bordered onarrogance. This Knight failed to understand the severity of the plan Elijah had chosen because of the brainwash the Royal palace did to him.He opened his mouth to voice his thoughts but paused when he felt that familiar pulse of magic. She has returned. Jackson's gaze turned to see Sophia burst out of the bushes, determination written on her face. She didn't stop to talk, but ran to Elijah, performing hand signs as she went. She slammed her hands against Elijah's chest and searched, just like she had when returning him to human form but hoping her hands against his skinwould aid her. "Just what are you doi
If the first and second times are coincidences, and the third is a conspiracy, what the hell was it when she encountered another enemy on sight? How does one person cross paths with more and more danger within the Forbidden Forest? Sophia decided she must have a radar detection system that only picked up the word "danger". That or she was a magnet for insanity. Even without Gaea's encouragement, she had no trouble finding herself in confrontations with traitors. Sophia thought she ought to be grateful that she was too busy swinging her massive sword against two very familiar spandex-uniformed men to realize that the brown haired Knight who was probably their target was present. Her invisibility did not last long. A battle cry was heard behind her before a crash nearly blasted Sophia from her hiding place. Sophia whirled around, uttering a quick thanks to Jennifer for having her back. Then she saw Evelyn looking in their direction. In t
Sophia stopped when she heard the sounds of battle begin. Her heart pounded a mile a minute and her hands shook with adrenaline. Jackson was one of the strongest Knights in the Knight Association. He was not just a High Knight for no reason, which meant both were strong opponents for each other. It was a lot take in at once, but she should be used to outrageous surprises. Sophia shook her head to rid her mind of those thoughts. The question was, what should she do? No one would believe her story of magic, a dragon, and two men who were beyond comprehension. “Sophia!” she heard Caiden’s voice calling out to her. She looked on and saw Caiden, Jennifer and Zac running towards her. “Guys, what are you—” She heard it before she actually heard Jennifer shout. “DRAGONS!” The roar followed and it bursts through the huge trees, knocking down huge trunks not even the earth magic could take down. A large dragon appeared before them. The t
Elijah stared at Sophia as she put a hand on her right chest, his dark eyes glistening despite keeping his emotions in check. She slowly stood and unzipped her top blouse. Elijah opened his mouth to ask what she was doing but when she ripped the right collar of her shirt to the side, he couldn’t let any word out of his mouth. A large scar was etched just above her breast, some parts of it were covered by her bralette, but a large part of the scar was still visible. Images of his weapon embedded into her heart flooded her mind and he looked away. “Is… Is this why I got the scar?” Elijah looked back at her. Sophia dropped her hands to her side and his dark eyes caught her brown ones. “Yes.” Sophia dropped to her knees on the fake ground as she stared at Elijah’s feet. When she asked her mother about the scar, her mother would say this was done by one of the dragon’s talons. She never heard any of her parents say she was not their true daughter. Did they
IT WAS a beautiful day, with birds chirping in the forest trees as they trekked the jungle. Huge trees surrounded them and the sun was barely peeking through the green leaves that shaded them from its heat. The air was colder than outside the Forbidden Forest.Sophia stopped in front of a cave’s mouth, looking up at its high roof before she turned around. Behind her stood Caiden, Zac, and Jennifer. The three nodded at her, telling her that they will be with her until the end.She took a deep breath before she turned back and gazed at the dark inner part of the cave. She’s back…Elijah…She began to walk further into the cave. Somehow, despite being away for several months, the cave’s pathway was still familiar to her. The tunnel was still the same dark tunnel she took before and as she emerged into the other side, her body felt the familiar heat that came from its source. She glanced at the part where the lake was still the
"What do you mean by that?" Caiden asked. Sophia shook her head. “It was just a thought that bothered me for a long time.” “You mean when you came back.” She nodded and took a deep breath. “Look, there’s something I wanted to tell you. But I don’t want you to tell anybody.” Caiden furrowed his eyebrows as he stepped towards her. “If it involves a life threatening secret then I can’t promise that.” When Sophia was going to protest, he waved his hand and leaned against the banister. “Your life is more valuable than any secret you have, Soph. You can’t expect any of us to leave you alone. So if you are going to tell me what’s in your mind,” he turned to her with a serious expression, “you have to trust me that I will stand with you.” Sophia bit her lip again as she blinked her eyes numerous times, preventing the tears that are threatening to fall. She sniffed and wiped her unshed tears before she took a deep breath. “When you, Zac, and Jennifer l
Sophia sat at the dinner table next to Caiden. Normally, she had no problems eating with the Mournflames. However, tonight each one of them was fidgeting. While typical for Altea, the woman was incapable of staying still, displays of nervousness and unease were unheard for Caiden and Andre. It made her uncomfortable and she wanted nothing more than to flee to her room and meditate for a couple more hours. Altea spoke first. “Sophia dear, you know Andre and I consider you to be our own daughter. I’ve always wanted one.” Sophia nodded, uncertain where Caiden’s mother was going with this daughter talk. It made Sophia wonder why she had agreed to marry someone as lazy as Andre who was just as bad if not worse than Caiden. “Well, Andre and I have been discussing, Caiden too, it was his idea,” she added as her son cleared his throat pointedly, “we would like to make it official.” The brunette looked at each Mournflame in turn. Even though she had heard what
Life took on a pattern. She was training day in and day out all day every day, except for when she went on missions. The majority of her missions were with Jackson and Caiden, but about ten percent of them occurred with other High Knights and sometimes from the Palace Knights. The only thing odd about her new routine was her missions with Caiden and Jackson. High Knight teams were fixed like amateur Knight teams. Members for a mission were decided on what skills were needed to complete. Often times you found yourself working with someone you don’t know. But that wasn’t the case with Sophia, Jackson, and Caiden. Ninety percent of their missions were done together. Her training with Helena had increased by an insane degree. She was learning how to think on her feet and could successfully avoid most of her supervisor’s attacks. And just when she thought she had reached the end and it couldn’t get any harder, Helena increased the power behind her attacks, her speed, and
