Derek Pov

"Just ten weeks left until the ceremony, and then everything will be yours, brother," Adrian said as we ran through the mountains.

From the right spot, the entire pack's land unfolds before your eyes like a vast, living map. I smirked, glancing over the expansive land below.

Our pack held one of the largest territories, a testament to its strength. This was what I had been trained for all my life, shaped to lead. My parents were unmatched, the strongest Alpha pair in our history.

For years, my parents had ruled with an iron fist, their strength unchallenged and their leadership unquestioned. No one dared to defy them, and any threat that dared approach was swiftly eliminated. They were untouchable, legends in their own right.

But now, everything is changing. My power had grown, and the pack couldn’t help but notice. Whispers spread like wildfire.

When a new strength rises, the pack naturally gravitates toward it. It wasn’t about disrespecting my father or forgetting all he had done for us—it was about survival. The pack needed a protector, and they were looking to the future.

I didn’t fear what was to come. I wasn’t uncertain. This was my time, the moment I had been waiting for my entire life. I was ready.

“Yeah, it’s about time,” I said, my voice steady. Mum and Dad are putting plans in place to make the transition smoother.

“They’ve made their decisions,” I said, my eyes resting on the distant place where they would settle.

Dad planned to take a step back, joining the pack council as an advisor. It was far enough from the main house to ensure they weren’t in my way, allowing me to take the lead without feeling like he was looming over me.

He understood the struggle, having lived through it himself. My grandfather had fought tooth and nail to keep his position, unwilling to step down.

In the end, he and Grandma had left the pack lands entirely, only returning once Dad had proven himself Alpha and that took twelve years .

Pride ran deep in our family—my dad's pride, especially—but even he knew when it was time for a change. I could tell he and Mum were ready for a break, craving peace.

They’d spend a year traveling, letting the pack settle in without them, before returning refreshed and ready to see how far the pack has gone .

Adrian raised an eyebrow, his voice cutting through my thoughts. "And what about the situation on your end? ”The question struck me, instantly erasing any trace of humor from my face. That one detail was impossible to ignore.

By the time my father and forefathers had taken on their roles, they all had their mates by their sides, ready to lead together.

But as my strength grew, my mate remained nowhere to be found, leaving everyone baffled. Taking the Alpha position without a mate? It raised a lot of questions.

In search of my mate, my father had arranged for me to visit other packs searching for the missing piece.

I’d traveled, hoping to meet the one destined for me. Instead, I was met with endless lines of eager women, all praying they’d be chosen.

The news spread fast, and soon female wolves were showing up at my door, all seeking to be the prize—an Alpha mate for this pack.

Alphas from different packs sent their daughters, hoping for a chance to become my mate, but still, there was no connection.

I found myself mostly hiding, leaving my mother to entertain the female wolves who came seeking me, hoping to be chosen as my mate.

My mother, ever the dutiful Alpha mate, took it all in stride. She welcomed our guests with hospitality and even comforted a few tearful ones who couldn’t hide their disappointment.

"I’ll find her. More will come. One of them has to be the one," I said, trying to reassure myself.

"You will, brother," Adrian agreed, his voice full of confidence.

Adrian had been my closest friend since he dared to challenge me when we were just twelve. No one else had the courage to spar with the Alpha’s son—they all kept their distance, afraid of being chosen to spar with me .

"In just ten weeks, I’ll assume the title of Alpha. There’s a reason I brought you up here with me," I said, my tone heavy with the weight of what was to come.

I stood there, looking out over the vast expanse of pack land, the wind brushing through the trees. I glanced at Adrian beside me. "I brought you up here for a reason.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow, a mischievous grin tugging at his lips. "Oh, let me guess—you're finally going to admit I'm the only one who can tolerate your insufferable face?" he teased, breaking the tension and making me chuckle.

Rolling my eyes, I smirked at him. "You’re a real piece of work, Adrian.”

But the smile faded from my face as I turned serious, stepping closer to him. "In all seriousness, I brought you here to let you know something important. I’ve chosen you, Adrian. You’ll be my beta.”

For a moment, Adrian was silent, his usual grin replaced by a rare seriousness that threw me off. I raised an eyebrow. "Is everything alright, man?”

Then, Adrian broke into laughter, his grin returning as the tension lifted. "Who else would be your beta, Derek? Who else is crazy enough to put up with your sorry ass?" His laughter echoed, making me shake my head in disbelief.

I couldn’t resist. With a grin, I lunged at him. "I’ll show you just how much you put up with!" . I shifted to my wolf , Adrian doing the same , I charged after him, and Adrian, with a mock scream of terror, took off running. I chased him through the land until, finally, he surrendered, laughing all the way .

The truth was that I had already scented my mate. That’s one of the perks of being a future Alpha—our ability to scent our mates from a distance. I met her face-to-face seven months ago. The moment our eyes locked, I knew. She was my mate. And she knew it too, without a doubt.

The moment I caught her scent, I knew. But there was no way I was accepting her as my mate. Not now, not ever.

So, I kept searching. Telling myself there had to be someone better out there, someone who could stand beside me as the Alpha I was meant to be. I ignored the pull, pushed aside the deep instinct that told me to claim her. I wasn’t ready. She wasn’t the one.

The more I trained, the stronger I became, and people started to notice. The whispers were inevitable. "How is he getting stronger without a mate?" they’d ask.

They probably thought I was some sort of freak of nature, a god among men, without realizing the truth—that my alpha strength came from the fact that I had scented her. That was why I kept growing.

But I wasn’t going to accept her. Not now. Not ever. She couldn’t be my mate. I refused to let her be.

Ava, the “cripple” of the pack. That’s what they called her—"the weakling," the one born with a twisted spine.

It was a shame, really. In a pack where strength is everything, where every wolf is expected to be fierce, powerful, and without defect, Ava was an anomaly.

Defective pups weren’t a thing in our world. Wolf babies, born of strong bloodlines, never came with flaws. If they were born with a defect, they didn’t survive long enough to even take their first breath

Nature had its way of culling them before they became a burden. Yet, somehow, Ava had been born, not only premature by four months, but with a spine that couldn’t align properly.

A deformity that no wolf, no matter how strong their lineage, should ever possess.

Her mother’s strength was questioned by the pack. It was hard to ignore the whispers that followed Ava’s birth. A mother who gave birth to a defective child was thought to be weak—impossible, really.

Yet, Ava’s mother had given birth to three healthy, perfect sons. No one questioned her after that. No one doubted her strength anymore, but Ava was the exception. It was clear to everyone that Ava was the problem, not her mother.

I often wondered what would’ve happened if Ava’s mother had borne more children like Ava. Would she have taken her own life in despair? Would she have become a rogue, abandoning the pack entirely?

Weakness wasn’t tolerated in our world. There was no room for pity or second chances.

But Ava had survived. She was still here, living on in the shadow of her mother’s legacy, despised for something she couldn’t control.

Ava’s existence was a burden to her mother. If it weren’t for the honor of her bloodline, I’m sure she would have abandoned her the moment she was born.

Weakness had no place in our pack, and Ava, with her twisted spine, was a constant reminder of that. Her two brothers? They loathed her.The resentment was obvious in every glance, every word they spoke about her behind closed doors.

The only ones who acknowledged Ava were her father and one of her brothers, Blake, a rare kind of acceptance in a family like theirs.

Before seven months ago, I only knew her name, and even that was nothing more than a whisper in the wind.

But then, I scented her. The moment my wolf’s nose caught her scent, everything changed. My curiosity was piqued, and I started paying attention.

The more I learned, the more unsettled I became. Ava was a disgrace to the pack, and yet, her blood ran deep. Her father was a respected ranking wolf, a man of power and influence.

If I moved against her without cause, the repercussions could be disastrous for me.

I needed a reason—a justifiable cause to banish her. Anything less would be seen as a personal vendetta, and that was something I couldn’t afford, not with her father’s reach.

So, I bided my time, watching, waiting, and calculating my next move.

But as I lost myself in these thoughts, my mind replayed that night—her first shift. The night everything changed for both of us .

Seven months earlier Dinner had started off like any other—quiet conversation, the clinking of cutlery, and the warm glow of candlelight filling the room. But the atmosphere shifted when my father set his fork down, his tone turning authoritative.“Derek, you’ll lead the patrol tonight,” he said firmly.I nearly choked on my drink. “What? Tonight? I already made plans!”My father’s eyes darkened, a subtle warning in their depths. “This isn’t up for debate. You’re the future Alpha, and leading patrols is a vital responsibility. It’s about ensuring the safety of the pack, maintaining order, and—”“Yeah, yeah, keeping everyone safe,” I interrupted, frustration bubbling up. “But why tonight? You’ve never cared if I skipped before.”“You need to start taking responsibility, Derek,” he replied, his tone unyielding. “When the pack sees the Alpha’s son out there, ensuring our borders are secure, it reassures them. They need to know you’re ready to lead.”I glared at him, ready to argue more,

"You’re a disgrace," she’d said, her words like knives carving into the fragile shell of my pride. "You’ll never run with the pack. You’ll always hide indoors, just like you always do.”It was the full moon tonight—a night that called every wolf to the run, to revel in their strength and unity. Every wolf but me.The tears I’d fought so hard to contain now spilled freely, streaking my cheeks as I collapsed onto the edge of my bed. My eyes, already swollen from the countless nights I’d cried, burned with fresh grief. Was it my fault that I was born prematurely , Was it my fault that my spine twisted as it did, or that I couldn’t shift when others did .I remembered my father’s stories about my mother when I was younger, how she was the pride of the pack. She had admirers, wolves who envied the one destined to be her mate. My father had beamed with pride when he discov

My wolf had shredded my clothes to ribbons during my shift, leaving me no choice but to sprint home naked through the cool forest. The house was silent when I arrived; the pack was still out on their run. Relief washed over me as I slipped inside, my heart pounding from the night's events. I drew a warm bath, hoping to soothe both my aching body and my frayed nerves. As the water cascaded over me, my emotions spilled over too. Uncontrollable sobs wracked my chest as I replayed the events of the night—the rejection, the disgust in Derek's eyes. The dream of a mate who would cherish me, love me for who I was, shattered like glass underfoot.Tears blurred my vision as I whispered my frustrations to the Moon Goddess. “Why?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Why him? Why not someone else—someone who could see me, accept me for what I am?”Growing up, I’d always fantasized about having a mate who would look past my imperfections, someone who wouldn’t care that I was weak, that I didn’t fit th

DEREK'S POV The weight of responsibility pressed against my chest as my father’s words echoed through the phone “Joshua and Andrea found themselves as mates during the pack run,” he announced. “As the soon-to-be Alpha, Derek, you’ll have to give them your blessings. I’ll be there as well.”A snort escaped my lips. The irony. Here I was, mated to the pack’s runt—a bond I refused to accept—and yet I was expected to celebrate another pair’s perfect union. Could my day get any worse? Before I could stew further in my misery, my door burst open. Selene walked in, her smugness radiating off her like a foul perfume. Dressed in barely anything, she sauntered toward me with that look in her eye, the one that always made my stomach turn.“How the hell do you keep getting into my house?” I muttered under my breath.“Come on, Derek,” she purred, closing the distance between us, her fingers trailing up my arm. “Why are you fighting this? We’d be perfect together.”I pushed her back, my patience

AVA“Look at how Andrea’s parents spoke to us,” my mother’s voice cracked like fragile glass as she entered the house, her eyes red from unshed tears. I could hear the weariness in her tone.“When will this embarrassment end?” she sobbed. “Even after giving birth to three strong, healthy sons, all they remember is the mistake I gave birth to first.”The mistake. The word rang like a death knell in my ears. I clung to the walls of the hallway, my breath coming in shallow bursts. They were talking about me. Tears burned at the edges of my vision, blurring everything around me. My mother… my own mother.Blake had told me to stay in my room—to not hi listen. But how could I not? My curiosity had brought me here, and now the weight of her words crushed my chest.“Andrea’s parents rejected Joshua because of me,” I whispered to myself. My condition—my twisted spine, my premature birth—had stained my family’s reputation like a scar that would never fade.Would Blake’s or Paul’s mates hate the

DEREKI couldn’t stop thinking about the night before. My wolf had been restless all day, his guilt echoing through me like a distant growl. It was his connection to her wolf that alerted me—her wolf had said Ava wanted to end it all. The thought sent chills down my spine, even now. I had no choice but to rush to the river where she was, guided by that unbearable, familiar pull. I found her already deep in the water, her body barely visible under the moonlight as it reflected on the restless waves. The moment I plunged in after her, the icy water stabbed at my skin like thousands of tiny needles. My arms worked desperately to pull her lifeless form from the depths. When I finally dragged her ashore, her pale face was void of life. For the first time in my life, I was terrified. My hands trembled as I gave her mouth-to-mouth, pressing her chest repeatedly, praying to the Moon Goddess to spare her. Then—just as hope began to dwindle—her body jerked, and she gasped for air.But when s

The sparring grounds were quiet except for the sound of fists meeting flesh. Adrian ducked and swung, landing a clean hit to my side. For the fifth time that morning, I barely reacted, letting the blow push me back a step.“What’s gotten into you?” Adrian asked, lowering his fists. “I’ve never been able to land this many hits on you in one day.”I rolled my shoulders, trying to shake off the sluggishness. “Just tired, Adrian. That’s all.”Adrian frowned. “You’ve been tired for weeks. And it’s not just here. You’re distracted during meetings, you’ve been dodging everyone’s questions, and now you can’t even keep up in sparring. Come on, man, talk to me.”I sighed heavily, running a hand through my hair. “I’ve been thinking about bonded mate pairing,” I said flatly.Adrian blinked, taken aback. “Bonded mate pairing? Why? You’re the future Alpha—you have time to find your mate.”I shook my head, my gaze hardening. “Time isn’t a luxury I have, Adrian. The pack needs stability, and traditio

AVA As I sat on the edge of Derek’s massive bed, I couldn’t help but take in the size and grandeur of the room. It was enormous—larger than my family’s entire living space—with high ceilings and walls lined with shelves of books and artifacts that spoke of Derek’s status as the future Alpha. My eyes landed on the bed itself. It was a grand piece of furniture with dark, heavy posts and a thick mattress draped in luxurious navy-blue sheets. I sat stiffly, feeling like I didn’t belong in a space like this.My thoughts drifted back to what had just happened outside. Kora’s attack replayed in my mind—the insults, the hatred, and the humiliation I had endured in front of everyone. But what confused me most was Derek’s reaction. He had defended me , growled at Kora like a wolf ready to rip her apart, and carried me here as if I were something precious.“How could he do that after rejecting me?” . It didn’t make sense. He had made it abundantly clear that I wasn’t worthy of being his mate

I asked her and her eyes softened. " I have not seen the entire pack that we are in , but I have seen enough to know you are surrounded. She is but one woman. Why do you all fear her so much ? " she asks and her questions stumped me into silence. So she continues to talk. " You have magic , so do the other girls that woke us. You are not defenseless ", she states." I know that " I was about to answer, but she cut me off. " Do you know that ? Because if you had known that you would already be fighting her back , would you not ? " I nodded dumbly. " Yea , I mean no. But shit . We have just been letting this all happen. We were so scared they would beat us. They lived with us for weeks and we did nothing. Always waiting. DEREK I never knew being the Alpha of a pack can be this strenuous . Dad usually does it effortlessly, he carried everyone's burden like he was born for the role . Meanwhile I was here being worn out , but I couldn't get tired because Ava needs me more than she needs anyone else . We were literally running around the pack , until Ava looked ready to drop from exhaustion. After a lot of coaxing, I managed to convince her she needed some rest. It took a lot of work , everyone was on a very high alert about whether Sabrina would come back. Ava still needed to release the magic to the goddess , but one thing after another just kept coming up. To where it was now almost three in the morning. We were stopping at the pack house where we could all keep close. I think that was the only way she would settle, at least hopefully a little bit.By the time I got her to our room , she was pretty much asleep on her feet. Adrenaline had been running that high , she was now crashing. We all were. Bu

Once we were behind the door , it took a while for them all to become coherent. They were dazed and foggy , and weak. Some could hardly even stand. They'd been laid down for so long , I was surprised they even remembered how. " We need to get them some food and water down here , they may even need a doctor ", I said, worriedly, watching them. " Let's wait to see how they react first before we put a doc in the room with them " Derek said from behind me. " They're human Derek , what can they do if you have warriors standing guard " I tried to reason with him. Well I was the emotional one and Derek was the logical one so definitely we would clash here and there . " I'm going to go back to the hospital. Do you want me to send a doctor down here ? The women and concubines we took from the castle had these gloomy looks on their faces like they would be gone anytime soon , I actually felt an urge to release them but I don't work on my own here even though I'm the alpha of alphas I can't skip the authority figures in my life, and honestly I'm greatly for people around me , they help correct my head when I'm about acting irrationally." Can we even remove the spell put on them ? " I asked Nimue . Looking at all the immobile bodies through the cell door was creepy. It made shivers run down my spine just being down here. " We should be able to , but some spells can be tricky. It can be hard to undo another witch's spell. At least for us , I don't want to keep tapping into the moon goddess's magic. The quicker we give it back the better". I heard some shouting further down the hall. The alpha and Derek were talking to someone through the door. Walking over , I went to see what the fuss was about. Getting closer, I heard the one voice

" Nimue, I need them back. Let's just go after her now. We have your magic. I can feel the strength of it running through my veins. We can kill her ourselves ", I said to her while I paced through the room. I could feel Derek's eyes tracking me and I was doing my best to block my thoughts from him. He wouldn't agree with this. " And for good reason he wouldn't. "Ava, What have I been saying this whole time? I have always run into things alone , not relying on others. For me to stay, I have to prove that I no longer need this magic. Not all of it anyway. To go to her now and deal with her ourselves, that will prove the balance keepers right. We need to give the magic back and deal with her with what's left and with our mate and family and friends. Ava , I don't want to have to leave again" she said sadly.I groaned inwardly. " If we give it back now, she will kill them ", I told her. " She won't know , Ava , I think you see us as giving it back, as we will be weak again. We are the tru
