Chapter 1

Penulis: Warm Cocoa
"Percy, you know what? Your little girlfriend is something else. We just got word from Sienna Industries—they approved the contract!"

"Girlfriend? Don’t be mistaken. When has Percy ever acknowledged her as his girlfriend? Besides, do you really think one woman could handle so many tough negotiations... Ha! Percy, your tactic was truly brilliant!"

The meaning behind the words was clear.

Outside the door, Stellar Rivers froze, her raised hand stiffening mid-air.

She was clutching a folder tightly in her arms. It was a crucial document that would determine whether Moore Enterprises could go public.

Sienna Industries, knowing full well that there would be thunderstorms tomorrow, had deliberately demanded the contract be signed in person that day. Left with no choice, Stellar pulled every string she could, taking an alternative flight to deliver the papers.

Even so, the return flight had encountered severe turbulence during the storm. The cockpit was breached, and the pilot had fallen unconscious.

Stellar, risking her own life, managed to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

She hadn’t revealed any personal information, instead requesting complete confidentiality about her identity. The moment the plane landed, she rushed to ensure the contract was intact.

No matter what, she had to deliver it safely to Percy Moore.

When she learned from the secretary that Percy was at the club, she hurried to the private suite. But just as she arrived at the door, she overheard those words.

What came next made her humiliation even worse.

After a brief pause, Percy scoffed and said, "I’ve never touched her."

One sentence, and it was as if he couldn’t distance himself from her fast enough, afraid she might tarnish his reputation. It was also an indirect admission that she wasn’t his girlfriend.

Laughter erupted from inside the room.

"By the way, Percy, what’s going on with your engagement to the Harlow family? I heard Yvonne Harlow is back in town!"

The conversation continued inside.

Outside, Stellar froze in place.

Yvonne was the true heiress of the Harlow family. The woman Percy was truly engaged to.

Back then, when Stellar was exposed as a fake heiress, the truth came to light—she had been switched at birth in the hospital. An investigation revealed that her biological parents were likely countryside folks. They were never found, and all anyone knew was their last name: Rivers.

After the incident that ruined her, she was thrown out in disgrace. The only person who took her in was Percy, the man she had been engaged to for years. He was also her boyfriend of three years.

Because of that, Stellar gave him her unwavering loyalty.

Even though, all these years, he never once mentioned marriage.

She thought it was just a matter of timing. But now, she understood. He had never intended to marry her.

The woman he wanted to marry had always been the true Harlow heiress, Yvonne.

Even though he knew exactly what Yvonne had done to Stellar all those years ago.

Before Stellar could think further, the voices inside the room gave her all the answers she needed.

"Of course, Percy isn’t going to marry her. After all, Miss Harlow is the real heiress of the Harlow family. As for a fake like Stellar? He was just playing with her. If it weren’t for the fact that she’s capable enough to handle things for Percy..."

Stellar’s head buzzed as their words trailed off. Whatever else they said was drowned out by the ringing in her ears.

Her legs wobbled, and she barely managed to steady herself against the doorframe.

It took her a long moment to force herself to calm down.

"A woman like her, catching even a glimpse of high society and enjoying its privileges for so many years, should be grateful for the luck of a lifetime!"

"If she dares to keep clinging..."

The mocking voices inside continued, but Stellar suddenly shoved the door open with a sharp bang.

The commotion startled everyone, and as they turned toward her, their expressions froze.

"S-Stellar, you… you’re here..."

"Why are you here?"

Before Stellar could respond, Percy frowned and coldly cut her off.

Stellar pressed her lips together. The room was filled with Percy’s close-knit group of childhood friends. Though they always appeared friendly, she knew all too well that none of them truly respected her.

And now, she didn’t care.

Even so, the scene stung—she hadn’t even had time to change out of her wrinkled clothes after stepping off the plane. The gash on her arm from the near-crash hadn’t been treated, and the pain still throbbed.

Yet Percy didn’t seem to notice any of it.

His only reaction was the annoyance of being interrupted.

Coupled with the cruel words she overheard just moments ago, it felt like a knife had been driven straight through her heart.

For a brief moment, her composure wavered, but then she suddenly laughed.

So, he was afraid she would cling to him, was he?

She blinked quickly, forcing away the tears that threatened to spill.

"Mr. Moore, this is the contract with Sienna Industries. I brought it here for you."

Her feigned indifference only seemed to amuse Percy’s friends even more.

They nearly forgot—this was just who Stellar was. No matter how cruel Percy was to her, she always ignored it, choosing instead to coddle him, indulge him, and do everything she could for him.

One of his friends, Chris Carter, smirked and said mockingly, "Ha! Percy, you’ve really got a way with women. To train up such an obedient dog. Oh, I mean “doll”. What’s your secret? Care to share it with us?"

Chris’ words, as blunt as they were, drew raucous laughter from the group. He was the same one who earlier claimed that Stellar’s life of privilege was sheer luck.

Only one of them, Xavier Reed, remained silent, his brows furrowed in disapproval.

The roaring laughter thundered in Stellar’s ears, but she shut it out completely. When she looked at Percy, the last shred of affection in her eyes disappeared.

“This is the last thing I’ll do for you. Percy, let’s break up.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm, resounding with finality.

The room fell silent. For a moment, no one spoke.

Then, laughter erupted again, louder and more mocking than before.

Stellar didn’t pay them any attention. She turned and walked out of the private suite without looking back.

Watching her retreating figure, Chris seemed to sense something unusual. Feeling awkward, he quickly asked, “Percy, she’s really gone. Aren’t you going to explain things to her?”

“What’s there to explain?”

Another one of Percy’s friends cut him off, speaking with absolute certainty.

“Don’t forget how she begged her way into Percy’s life back then. A fake heiress who stole eighteen years of someone else’s life, a stray dog everyone despises—how could she possibly survive without him? Mark my words, she’ll come crawling back, crying and begging for his forgiveness before the day is over!”

Percy swirled the red wine in his glass, his fingers casually tilting the stem. His gaze drifted back from the door where Stellar had disappeared, his lips curving into the faintest hint of a smirk.

No one knew better than him how much Stellar depended on him.

A woman with no home, no family—how could she possibly have the courage to leave him?

It was just harmless banter, a way to show off in front of his friends. What could she possibly be upset about?

“Don’t worry about her. Let’s drink.”

The others laughed and moved on, turning their attention back to their drinks and idle chatter.

Meanwhile, outside the club, Stellar hailed a cab and headed straight back to Azure Heights.

Once home, she took a long shower, cleaned and bandaged the wound on her arm, and began packing her belongings with swift precision.

Since she had decided to leave, she had no intention of lingering.

When Stellar’s true identity was exposed, the Harlow family blamed her for their biological daughter’s years of suffering. Yvonne had ended up in an orphanage, enduring a harsh life, and Stellar became the scapegoat.

They didn’t just disown her and forbid her from ever using the Harlow name again, they also demanded she repay every penny they’d ever spent on her.

Everything Yvonne had done to Stellar back then remained a nightmare she couldn’t shake.

At the time, Stellar became a pariah, despised by everyone. Former friends and family turned their backs on her without hesitation.

It was Percy who found her on the streets and brought her home.

In her darkest moment, when she’d lost all hope, she clung to that man like a lifeline, pouring everything she had into him.

But now...

The contract she had risked her life to retrieve would be the final repayment of the debt she owed him for saving her back then.

From now on, they were even.

As she finished packing, Stellar’s hand trembled slightly when she came across something buried deep at the bottom of a drawer.

A few trophies, shining reminders of her once-brilliant past.

She had been a prodigy, a genius admired by all.

Back then, for Percy, she resolutely turned down Professor Stone, the mentor who believed in her potential. He even offered her a full scholarship to continue her studies, promising that her background didn’t matter.

She broke his heart when she rejected his offer.

Now, she knew she was wrong.

After a moment of hesitation, Stellar decisively packed the trophies into her suitcase. She zipped it up, grabbed her bags, and walked out of the villa without looking back.

For some reason, perhaps because Stellar had never spoken to him that way before, Percy couldn’t get the image of her tear-filled eyes as she left out of his head. It irritated him.He downed several glasses of red wine, the burning sensation in his chest finally dulling the inexplicable frustration swirling inside him.Just then, Chris came over, holding his phone."Percy, wasn’t Stellar on this flight? It’s all over the news."Percy glanced at the screen, where a breaking news report was displayed:"…Flight AT580 experienced a major crisis today at noon when the pilot lost consciousness mid-flight. Thanks to the intervention of a mysterious passenger with professional expertise, the plane managed to land safely. The cause of the incident is still under investigation…"The others in the room crowded around as well.Seeing the report, they immediately started talking all at once, their voices filled with awe."That’s insane! “Well, if it isn’t the Harlow family’s precious ‘heiress,’ Stellar Rivers.”A mocking laugh rang out as Yvonne, dripping in jewelry and arrogance, crossed her arms and blocked Stellar’s path.Behind Yvonne stood two bodyguards dressed in all black, their dark sunglasses adding an air of intimidation.Stellar didn’t want to engage. She stepped to the side to avoid her, but Yvonne grabbed her arm, yanking her back.“I wasn’t done talking. Who said you could walk away?”“I have nothing to say to you,” Stellar said, shaking off her grip. Since Yvonne had been reunited with the Harlow family, Stellar endured nothing but cruelty. To them, she was the villain who stole Yvonne’s life for eighteen years, a parasitic fraud who took what wasn’t hers. And Yvonne...What she did to Stellar had ruined her reputation, her innocence, and her entire life. Yet no one believed it was Yvonne’s doing.Everyone thought Stellar deserved it, calling it karma for taking Yvonne’s place. But who ever considered

At 8 p.m., the entrance to the Revere Hotel was lined with luxury cars. This level of business gala enforced a strict guest list, with numerous journalists stationed outside, snapping photos of the arrivals.Stellar stepped out of the car, a vision of bold elegance, a stark contrast to her usual understated style. Her fiery red gown clung perfectly to her curves, while her porcelain skin seemed to shimmer under the shifting lights, radiant as polished marble.A gemstone necklace and a red clutch completed the look—simple yet exuding an understated elegance that made it impossible to discern the brand but left an impression of quiet luxury. The moment she exited the car, she drew more than a few admiring glances.Stellar’s long lashes lowered slightly, her meticulously crafted, icy makeup concealing any trace of unease. However, she sighed softly.Claude had arranged the dress and jewelry for her tonight, but the choices were far too extravagant for her taste. This was already the simpl

What puzzled Percy was that Shane made no move to shake his hand. Instead, Shane simply stared at him with an odd expression.Percy hesitated in confusion before awkwardly pulling his hand back."Mr. Howe, is there an issue?" He just saw Stellar talking to Shane, and judging by their interaction, it looked like they’d reached some kind of agreement.Could it be… the deal hadn’t gone through? Before he could dwell further, Stellar spoke up.“Mr. Moore, I’m sorry, but I don’t have a contract for Moore Enterprises. I’m not here on behalf of your company.”Her words made Percy freeze. It took him a moment to process what she’d said, and when he did, he lowered his voice sharply.“You’d better think about where we are before causing a scene.”In a setting like this, his image was everything. He could dismiss her publicly if necessary, but she, as a woman, should know better than to stir trouble in front of an audience. In the past, Stellar, always keen on reading the room, would have imme

“Mr. Howe.” Percy stepped in front of him, blocking his path with an abruptness that bordered on rudeness, drawing the attention of those nearby.Shane smiled faintly, sizing him up. “Mr. Moore, is there something else you need?” Percy felt an unprecedented sense of humiliation. He, the esteemed president of Moore Enterprises, had never been in a position where he had to practically grovel for a partnership. But this project was critical to Moore Enterprises' performance next quarter. He couldn’t afford to let it go. Hiding his frustration behind a practiced smile, Percy said, “Stellar has never worked at Moore Enterprises. She didn’t even finish college. Whatever skills she has, she picked up from being around me. Mr. Howe, I strongly encourage you to reconsider this partnership.”Shane, a veteran in this industry, had always avoided working with Moore Enterprises, mainly because he disliked Percy as a person. The moment he heard Percy’s words, Shane’s lips curled slightly.“Are

Although Claude was always gentle and warm in front of Stellar, he was, after all, the current CEO of Riverside Corporation. His commanding presence was unmatched, and now, tinged with anger, it was downright intimidating. The sheer force of his aura made Percy’s heart skip a beat, but he stubbornly refused to back down as he stared at Stellar. “Sir, there’s clearly been a misunderstanding. Miss Rivers belongs to me.”He even considered saying that Stellar was no more than a pet he raised, convinced that no matter who this man was, no one would treasure something discarded as worthless. But before the words could leave his mouth, the man in front of him let out a cold laugh. “You? You’re not even worthy.” The single, cutting sentence shattered what little composure Percy had left. His face turned an ugly shade of red and purple. Stellar, who hadn’t eaten and already had a few drinks, felt her stomach twist even more at the thought of Percy and the cloying scent of perfume t

At the same time, in the top-floor office of Brighton Group, a man stood before the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the bustling city traffic below. The sunlight poured over his sharp, chiseled features, casting a warm golden hue that softened his otherwise cold demeanor. He stood like a figure carved from marble—aloof, otherworldly, and indifferent as if surveying the world from above. Behind him, a table held the proposal and contract sent over by Riverside Corporation. Shane, unable to contain his excitement, was effusively praising their latest acquisition to Stephen Ward. “Stephen, that Miss Rivers is truly something else—stunning and incredibly capable. The technical support she’s provided is nothing short of brilliant. I’ve got a strong feeling this partnership will last. It looks like the Rivers family has struck gold with her. With her leading Riverside, that new company of theirs has limitless potential.” Shane wasn’t just an employee or subordinate; he

Stealing confidential information was a cardinal sin in their industry. If the accusation stuck, Stellar would face legal consequences, potentially even prison time. Brighton Group would also risk being implicated. At the banquet that night, Shane hadn’t believed Percy’s claims. But now, with Percy barging into Brighton Group with apparent preparation, Shane couldn’t dismiss the possibility entirely. Turning his attention to the proposal, Shane flipped through the pages. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes before he looked at Stellar. “What does Miss Rivers want to do?” Before Stellar could respond, Percy cut in, his voice laced with smugness and indifference, as though he was savoring the moment she would plead for forgiveness. “Do you even have a choice? I’ve given you countless chances, but you insisted over and over that you weren’t representing Moore Enterprises. Stellar, without Moore Enterprises backing you, do you really think you’re qualified to negotiate with Brighto

Stellar could hear the malice dripping from the reporter’s words. She took a deep breath. This incident hadn’t been a secret back then. But after all these years, for someone to bring it up now—so deliberately, so calculated—it was obvious this wasn’t just a casual question.Someone planned this. But they seemed to have forgotten one thing—she was no longer the same Stellar Rivers from back then. Her therapist had told her once that running from the past would never free her from it. The only way to take back control was to face it head-on.She refused to let this moment break her.She had rebuilt her life from the ground up.She was not that helpless girl anymore. And yet, the weight of the stares and the judgment seeping into the air had pulled her straight back into the nightmares of her past. She tried to speak, tried to force out a response. But no sound came. The memories clawed at her, her stomach twisting violently, her body betraying her despite every ounce of resolve she had.

"Our company intends to use this land to build a luxury resort. It will attract international travelers and serve as a hub for cultural exchange, creating a bridge between domestic and global tourism…"Mark listened carefully, nodding subtly in approval. It was a solid proposal. Then, it was Brighton Group’s turn.Stephen glanced at Stellar, silently signaling for her to take the lead. She raised a brow, momentarily surprised by his level of trust. But since he was giving her the stage, she wasn’t going to shy away from it."Our plan is to develop this land for the advancement of aerospace technology. It will serve as a research and development facility, contributing to the nation’s space exploration efforts and scientific innovation."Mark sat back, absorbing her words. Her explanation was articulate and her vision was ambitious. There was something remarkable about a young woman with a mind set on shaping the futureAt that moment, she wasn’t just presenting a project; she was illumi

But after the initial shock, jealousy hit her like a wave. Why?Why did Stellar, a woman she saw as nothing more than discarded leftovers, always have powerful men standing by her side? What did she have that Yvonne didn’t?Her gaze instinctively shifted to Percy. No matter how she measured it—looks, intelligence, presence—Percy was leagues below the man standing in front of them now.Even fate seemed to favor Stellar.Percy, meanwhile, stood frozen in disbelief. He had never imagined that this man before him was Brighton Group’s CEO, the industry’s most sought-after visionary. However, Stephen paid them no mind. Instead, he arched a brow, his voice carrying an effortless, almost lazy confidence."If Stellar were really trying to latch onto someone, she wouldn’t need to look elsewhere—I’m right here. She doesn’t even spare me a glance, so why would she be interested in him?"His remark left Yvonne, Percy, and Stellar speechless. The murmurs in the crowd only grew."He’s got a point. W

Stellar almost laughed. The sheer audacity. How could Percy possibly think he was better than Stephen? How shameless did he have to be to say something like that with a straight face?Just as she was about to respond, a sharp voice interrupted."Percy?"Percy turned, only to see Yvonne approaching. She was clutching a wine glass tightly, though her expression remained composed on the surface.Inside, she was seething. The heiress of the Seaton family, one of the owners of this very land, was part of her social circle. That was how she had gotten an invitation to tonight’s event. But the last thing she expected was to find Percy here—and worse, standing so close to Stellar, locked in a heated exchange. They appeared to be laughing and chatting.Had he deliberately turned down her invitation just so he could come here for Stellar?Had he lied about his business meeting?Fury burned through her veins, but she swallowed it down, composing herself as she made her way over."Percy?" she cal

Percy instantly recognized the man standing beside Stellar—it was the same guy he had seen with her at the private dining restaurant that night. So, they did know each other. Was she here with him? That thought alone sent a deep sense of unease surging through him, an almost suffocating sense of urgency. His fists clenched tightly at his sides. Not long ago, she was always the one by his side, helping him secure project after project. But now? Now, she stood beside someone else, acting as if he were a stranger. They were once so close, yet at this moment, they had never felt farther apart.A desperate urge clawed at Percy, compelling him to reach for something—anything—before it slipped away completely. He stepped forward, about to say something to Stellar—But before he could, the host of the event, Mark Seaton, made his way toward the crowd.Percy swallowed back his impulse and forced himself to stay put."Welcome, esteemed guests. Stellar flinched, startled, and quickly turned around, only to find Stephen standing beside her. She had no idea when he even got there. "Senior…" She blinked at him suspiciously. "You heard everything just now?" "Hmm. I happened to be in the restroom." Stephen’s tone was casual as if it were just a coincidence. Stellar’s eyes gleamed with a mischievous glint. "Well, I guess you saw through me." She let out a small chuckle. "I was bluffing to see how she’d react. Turns out, she folded instantly. If I actually had proof, I wouldn’t have let her off so easily." Someone who couldn’t focus on their research and instead schemed to sabotage others’ work wasn’t worth any sympathy. Just having her step down from the project while still keeping her spot as a graduate student was already giving her more mercy than she deserved. "Senior, do you think I was too harsh?" Her eyes shimmered with mischief, not at all apologetic. Instead of coming across as cunning, it made he

Vivian’s palms were slick with nervous sweat, but she kept up her bravado, voice sharp despite the tremor beneath it."You have no right to accuse me! I didn’t tamper with the data. You're making baseless accusations!"Stellar arched a brow, her gaze sharp enough to cut through any pretense."Oh? So, you’d rather go public with this? Let me lay out the evidence for everyone to see?"Her voice was calm, almost amused, but the weight behind it was undeniable."You really think I’d confront you without proof? You really think your plan was flawless?"Or do you honestly believe someone like Alex Porter wouldn’t throw you under the bus the second things got tough?"Three pointed questions—each one hitting harder than the last.Vivian’s confidence crumbled as cold sweat trickled down her back. She had been so sure her plan was airtight, convinced she had covered her tracks. But Stellar had unraveled it all so effortlessly. And Alex? "What’s that supposed to mean? Why are you talking like that?" Lilian frowned, clearly puzzled. "I’m just stating the facts. Is there a problem with that?" Vivian shrugged innocently, but her tone carried the same irritating smugness. Lilian couldn’t stand that attitude. Simon, ever the peacemaker, sighed and stepped in. "Alright, both of you, let’s just drop it and keep working." "We’ve been at this for hours. If it’s not working, maybe we should just cut our losses," Vivian said flatly, dousing any lingering hope."If this approach isn’t yielding results, we should consider switching to another—" Before she could finish, Stellar suddenly spoke up, her voice calm but firm. "Hold on. I’m about to get the answer." Vivian’s brows furrowed slightly. Then she let out a soft, condescending scoff. "We’ve all been working on this for hours with no solution, but now, suddenly, after sitting there mumbling to yourself, you think you can solve it?" "You—!" Lilian’s tempe

As if the endless demands weren’t frustrating enough, they were also draining his finances. The moment Percy so much as suggested a compromise, Yvonne would throw a tantrum, playing the spoiled heiress to perfection."If you can’t meet my expectations, I’ll tell my uncle and the others that you can’t even afford this. Let’s see how he deals with you then."Percy knew all too well how much the Harlow and Jonathan’s family doted on her. They would bend over backward to satisfy her every unreasonable demand, and somehow, he would still end up being the villain in the story. If word of this reached his father, he’d be in for a lecture, and if it caused any trouble for the engagement, it could even hurt the company. His past missteps had already cost Moore Enterprises several partnerships, leaving the business on shaky ground. At this point, he couldn’t afford any more turbulence. And Yvonne, of course, had figured that out. That was why she was pushing her limits, knowing full well he ha
