Chapter 8

Author: Warm Cocoa
At the same time, in the top-floor office of Brighton Group, a man stood before the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the bustling city traffic below.

The sunlight poured over his sharp, chiseled features, casting a warm golden hue that softened his otherwise cold demeanor. He stood like a figure carved from marble—aloof, otherworldly, and indifferent as if surveying the world from above.

Behind him, a table held the proposal and contract sent over by Riverside Corporation.

Shane, unable to contain his excitement, was effusively praising their latest acquisition to Stephen Ward.

“Stephen, that Miss Rivers is truly something else—stunning and incredibly capable. The technical support she’s provided is nothing short of brilliant. I’ve got a strong feeling this partnership will last. It looks like the Rivers family has struck gold with her. With her leading Riverside, that new company of theirs has limitless potential.”

Shane wasn’t just an employee or subordinate; he and Stephen were close friends and co-founders of Brighton Group. Since Stephen, as the heir to the Ward family, couldn’t always appear in the spotlight, Shane often took on the more visible role. Therefore, their conversations were unusually candid.

Stephen turned around slowly, showing little interest in Shane’s enthusiasm. His dark, piercing eyes swept over the documents on the table, but he made no move to pick them up. Instead, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, tinged with mockery.

“This is the first time I’ve seen you so impressed by a woman. What, have you fallen for her?”

Shane, knowing Stephen well after years of friendship, didn’t bother to hide his thoughts.

“I suppose I have. There’s just something different about her.”

Stephen didn’t bother to crush his friend’s excitement.

He’d long stopped believing in the idea of “good women.” Even the girl he once thought was destined to become a rising star in aerospace had abandoned her dreams and responsibilities for a man.

“Well, it works out. I’ve got other things to handle right now. Since you like her so much, I’ll leave this project entirely in your hands,” Stephen said, though his tone was indifferent.

Then, as an afterthought, he added with a slight frown, “But don’t let a pretty face cloud your judgment. This project is critical. If you take it on, make sure you see it through.”

“Seriously?” Shane’s eyes lit up in surprise.

With a grin, he gave an exaggerated salute. “Understood, Mr. Ward. Mission accepted!”

As he spoke, a flicker of intrigue danced in his gaze.

As soon as Stephen finished speaking, his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, silenced it, and tossed it onto the sofa.

"Another call from your grandfather? Trying to push you into marriage again?" Shane remarked, unable to resist. "Stephen, from what I’ve heard, that engagement was arranged ages ago between your families. With your grandfather’s health declining, maybe you should just go through with it."

Stephen’s cold glare shot over instantly.

"Trying to meddle in my business now?"

Shane quickly raised his hand and mimed zipping his lips shut.

At that moment, Shane’s phone started ringing. Seeing Stellar’s name on the screen, his eyes lit up with excitement.

"Stephen, Miss Rivers is calling me."

Stephen felt the urge to curse.

Here he was, being pressured into marriage, while his best friend seemed to be striking gold.

Irritated, he waved Shane out of the room. Once the office door closed, Stephen finally answered his own phone.

An elderly voice came through, as usual, with the same opening question.

"When are you coming back to finalize the wedding?"

"Grandfather, I’ve told you, I’m calling off the engagement," he replied, his answer as consistent as always.

It felt like an endless battle of wills, a game to see who would back down first.

After a brief silence, the voice on the other end spoke again.

"The Rivers family is down to its last heiress. My old friend, Laurence, guards her like she’s the most precious thing in the world, and I haven’t even met the girl yet. But Laurence’s birthday is next month, and she’s bound to attend. Whether you’re breaking off the engagement or going through with it, you’ll have to meet her."

Stephen recognized this as his grandfather’s biggest concession.

"Fine. Since everyone will be there, I’ll end the engagement that day.”

Marcus Ward was too shocked for words.

Compared to the tense atmosphere around Stephen, Shane’s mood was noticeably lighter after leaving the office.

He arranged for Stellar to visit Brighton Group.

First, to finalize revisions to the contract and handle the signing. Second, he wanted to give her a tour of the research and technical departments.

Setting aside personal feelings, Shane was still a businessman—one handpicked and meticulously trained by Stephen himself. Maximizing the benefits of this partnership was his top priority.

It wasn’t long before Stellar arrived at Brighton Group, dressed in a sleek black business suit with her hair elegantly pinned up. She exuded an air of sophistication and capability. Her graceful figure, coupled with her poised demeanor, was like a swan gliding across a tranquil lake—proud, serene, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Since Claude had entrusted her with this task, she was determined to see it through perfectly.

As she pushed open the office door, Shane was once again struck by her beauty. Offering a warm and friendly smile, he extended his hand, his tone now free of the initial wariness he had shown upon their first meeting.

“Apologies for keeping you waiting.”

Stellar returned the smile and shook his hand briefly, her gaze sweeping past him to look behind him. However, the rumored mysterious owner of Brighton Group was nowhere to be seen.

Her brows furrowed slightly before she offered a polite smile. If they had called her to the company, it surely meant they intended to sign the deal. She spoke calmly.

“Is there an issue with Riverside’s proposal, or is Brighton dissatisfied with the details of the contract?”

Shane quickly waved his hand.

“Not at all. Our boss has entrusted this entire project to me. From signing the contract to managing the project’s progress, it’s all in my hands. I guess I just wasn’t charming enough to catch your attention.”

His light-hearted joke drew a laugh from Stellar, her already radiant features becoming even more captivating.

The blinds in the office weren’t fully closed, and though the sound of their conversation couldn’t be heard, the image of the two chatting animatedly was clearly visible from the outside.

In the lounge area of the lobby, Percy watched the scene, his face dark and stormy.

He hadn’t slept much the night before, evident in the exhaustion etched around his eyes. Yet his gaze remained icy and piercing.

Despite his simmering anger, the partnership with Brighton Group was far too critical to ignore.

Early in the morning, Percy had made a point to visit Brighton Group in hopes of negotiating once more.

However, after waiting for hours, Shane claimed to be too busy to meet with him.

Now, seeing Stellar arrive and Shane suddenly becoming available, Percy’s suspicions boiled over.

It was clear that Stellar had betrayed him.

How dare she?

His anger surged as he pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

Completely unaware of the storm brewing, Stellar was engrossed in a discussion with Shane about the contract details.

She was clear: while she could provide technical support for the project, she would not be a free laborer. That had to be spelled out explicitly.

After their back-and-forth negotiation, Shane’s admiration for her grew even stronger. Not only was she stunning, but she was sharp and knew how to stand her ground.

“Miss Rivers, it’s a pleasure working with you,” he said, handing her a pen to sign the contract.

Stellar accepted it with a confident smile, her gaze bright and resolute.

“I believe you’ll be saying that again in the future, Mr. Howe—more than once.”

Riverside Corporation would undoubtedly rise with Brighton Group’s backing.

Just as she was about to sign, the door to the meeting room was suddenly flung open with a loud bang.

The receptionist hurried in after the intruder, her face flushed as she tried to explain to Shane.

“Mr. Howe, this gentleman, Mr. Moore, insisted on coming in...”

“It’s fine. You can leave,” Shane said, waving her off and turning his calm gaze to Percy Moore. “Mr. Moore, what is the meaning of this?”

Percy strode forward and slammed a proposal document onto the table, his cold eyes fixed on Stellar.

“Mr. Howe, this is Moore Enterprises’ proposal for this project. The evidence is right here—Stellar has stolen confidential information from Moore Enterprises. As the company’s president, I have every right to bring legal and compliance teams here to apprehend her.”

Stealing confidential information was a cardinal sin in their industry. If the accusation stuck, Stellar would face legal consequences, potentially even prison time. Brighton Group would also risk being implicated. At the banquet that night, Shane hadn’t believed Percy’s claims. But now, with Percy barging into Brighton Group with apparent preparation, Shane couldn’t dismiss the possibility entirely. Turning his attention to the proposal, Shane flipped through the pages. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes before he looked at Stellar. “What does Miss Rivers want to do?” Before Stellar could respond, Percy cut in, his voice laced with smugness and indifference, as though he was savoring the moment she would plead for forgiveness. “Do you even have a choice? I’ve given you countless chances, but you insisted over and over that you weren’t representing Moore Enterprises. Stellar, without Moore Enterprises backing you, do you really think you’re qualified to negotiate with Brighto

Stellar’s eyes flickered subtly. She had expected this outcome. But with business opportunities knocking on her door, there was no reason to turn them away. She offered a graceful smile.“No problem, but I have some matters to handle right now. Let’s discuss this later.”Nicholas didn’t press further, nodding with satisfaction before cheerfully walking away. As he left, he threw a parting remark at Percy.“Mr. Moore, since the contract has expired, we’ll have to see if there’s another chance to collaborate in the future.”The implication was clear: there would be no renewal.Percy was so furious he could barely contain himself. He hadn’t anticipated that Stellar truly had the capability to pull this off—humiliating him at Brighton Group and even stealing away one of Moore Enterprises’ key partners.Staying any longer would only worsen the embarrassment, so he reluctantly signaled to his team.“We’re leaving.”But before he could take another step, Shane chuckled lightly.“Mr. Moore, do

William Moore’s scolding hit Percy like a bucket of cold water, sobering him up almost instantly.“You know how much the Harlow family treasures Yvonne. They wouldn’t even dream of scolding her. And you had the nerve to tell her to leave? Tomorrow, you’re taking a gift to apologize and make things right. “The business scene in Riverdale is volatile right now, and there are competitors trying to seize market share. The Moore family needs the Harlow family’s support. Do you understand me?”Percy didn’t particularly care about the idea of a business alliance through marriage, but with the collaboration with Brighton Group now out of reach, cutting ties with the Harlow family wasn’t an option either.“Fine,” he muttered after a long silence, hanging up the phone and sinking back into the sofa, his expression blank as he sat there in silence.Xavier cast him a glance, the corner of his mouth curling into a cold smirk.“I’ve got other matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave. Yvonne stood there, dressed like a peacock in full display, her outfit dripping with gold and jewels, flaunting her wealth and superiority. Her voice carried an air of unrestrained arrogance.“Well, well, if it isn’t Stellar Rivers, the illustrious representative of Riverside Corporation who just signed a deal with Brighton Group. What’s this? Picking up trash outside a school now?”She smirked, lifting her foot to step on one of Stellar’s scattered books.Ha! So, what if Percy didn’t like her? He was still going to obediently get engaged to her.Every time Yvonne complained to her parents about her frustrations, they coddled her endlessly. Not only did they pressure her uncle to invest an extra two million dollars into her latest film, but they also arranged a dinner meeting with the Moore family tonight at an upscale restaurant to finalize the engagement date.Stellar’s gaze turned cold as she looked up at Yvonne.“Move.”“And if I don’t? What can you do about it?” Yvonne sneered, to

Stellar didn’t want to talk about it, and Claude didn’t press her further, though anger surged within him. “It seems someone needs to be taught a lesson,” Claude thought. The drive was quiet, with neither of them saying much. When they finally arrived at the restaurant, Claude broke the silence. “Alright, enough with the gloomy face. Eat first. You’ll need a full stomach to think things through.” Stellar could tell Claude had noticed her troubled mood but chose to give her space. His subtle way of showing respect made her feel comforted. After parking the car, Claude led her inside to the private room he had reserved in advance. The restaurant’s decor was luxurious, with an elegant ambiance. From the main hall, the soft notes of a piano melody flowed in, soothing and uplifting, as though washing away her worries. Stellar gradually felt her emotions settle. Soon, dish after dish began arriving at their table. Although each portion was small, the sheer number of dishes was

When Claude returned with a dark expression, Stellar immediately set her utensils down. “Uncle Claude, you don’t look too happy. Did something happen during that call?” Seeing her concerned face and recalling Yvonne’s venomous behavior, Claude felt a sharp pang of heartache. Not wanting to ruin Stellar’s mood, he brushed it off casually. “It’s nothing, just ran into a barking dog.” Stellar paused, then offered her own calm reassurance. “Well, if it’s just an animal, there’s no need for us to stoop to their level.” Claude burst into hearty laughter, his mood instantly lifted. Picking up his utensils, he placed more food on Stellar’s plate. “Here, eat more, Stellar. You’re far too thin. You need to take better care of yourself. As long as I’m here, I’ll make sure you’re well-fed and never mistreated.” A warm feeling blossomed in Stellar’s chest. It felt wonderful to be cared for like this.…After the meal, Claude went to fetch the car, leaving Stellar waiting outside.

Stellar paused for a moment, guessing that Claude likely saw what had transpired earlier. Yet, out of respect for her, he chose not to intervene or ask questions. Her heart warmed at the thought, and a genuine smile spread across her face. “I will. Thank you, Uncle Claude. Drive safe.” She waved him off as he left before heading back into the villa. …Later that evening. After a relaxing hot shower, Stellar stepped out of her room, only to receive an unexpected phone call—from none other than Percy’s mother, Margaret Farrell. “Stellar! It’s so good to hear your voice!” Margaret’s tone was syrupy sweet, just as it always had been. “About what happened at the restaurant today, I wasn’t ignoring you on purpose. You know how much I’ve always cared for you, don’t you?” Her words sounded warm and familiar, but Stellar had long since seen through the façade. She didn’t respond, keeping silent on the line. Margaret, sensing the lack of engagement, grew impatient. “Are you hol

Mr. Howe, and that wealthy, dashing gentleman who picked you up the other day? Why bother stirring up trouble here on campus?”Jonathan’s head snapped up and the brief moment of hesitation wiped clean from his face.“Stellar,” he scolded, his voice brimming with anger. “When did you become so shameless? After leaving the Harlow family, you’ve been jumping from one man to another. It’s disgraceful!”The memory of her unapologetic attitude the day before resurfaced, fueling his frustration. She showed no remorse for her actions an

"Well, I guess you saw through me." She let out a small chuckle. "I was bluffing to see how she’d react. Turns out, she folded instantly. If I actually had proof, I wouldn’t have let her off so easily." Someone who couldn’t focus on their research and instead schemed to sabotage others’ work wasn’t worth any sympathy. Just having her step down from the project while still keeping her spot as a graduate student was already giving her more mercy than she deserved. "Senior, do you think I was too harsh?"
