Nakahiga ako sa kama, and my cousins were on their phones. Si Ate Betsy, nasa balcony, may kausap ata na doctor, and Andreas was playing on his Nintendo switch. I laid back on the bed and I looked at the ceiling.
“Ang tagal ni Tia.” I remarked.
“Did you hear her mom’s voice, katakot!” Ate Judy remarked. “Grabe, nakatiis ka sa bahay na ‘to ng ganon kasama mo? All until 4th year high school?”
I chuckled, not sitting back up. “Hindi ko naman nakaka-interact madalas ‘yong mommy ni Tia eh.” I sat up and met Ate Judy’s eyes. “Hindi naman ako taga-rito, diba?”
“True,” Milano remarked. “hindi nga taga-rito si Rise.”
I glanced at Milano and we smiled at each other. I don’t have allies in this house, but outside, I have a village who loves me, and cares for me. My ‘estranged’ cousins are among them. Kris, and his family, too. My friends din sa hospital. And most importantly, my Lolo Leo. I miss my Lolo, pero he’s on his ‘enlightenment’ trip sa Siargao. He didn’t mean to miss my brother’s wedding. Wala rin namang wedding to miss, so I think exempted na siya from this, well, mess.
“Oh, oh, Rise!” Ate Judy glanced at me with an excited look on her face, and she beamed. “Your suture technique! I saw the baby bago ako umalis pa-Cebu, grabe, that was immaculate! Di ko alam na magagaling pala neuro peeps sa ganon?! Ang linis ng pagkakatahi! Samantalang sa inyo nauubos ang skin glue sa ospital.”
“No, Ate, si Rise lang talaga magaling mag-suture.” I shook my head at their praises and I just smiled.
“Wait, broken heart syndrome? May ganon?!” Andreas asked, with an accented Tagalog.
Ate Betsy nodded. “Nagka-case ako ng ganon, it was wild, binreak ‘yong babae ng jowa niya after niya pumasa ng board exams.”
I glanced at Ate Betsy. “Wait, ikaw ‘yong may hawak nung case na ‘yon?”
She nodded. “Grabe, nabaliw puso niya non. Biruin mo, kapapasa lang ng boards, tas iniwan na ng shota? Kung ako 'yon, nako. Nagwala siguro ako.” Ate Betsy shook her head and she crossed her arms. “Kaya kayo, mga kids, nako, sinasabi ko sa inyo, wag kayo magjojowa ng maaga!”
“Why do you sound like my mother, Betsy?”
Sinamaan ng tingin ni Ate Betsy si Andreas, and they laughed it out. We also talked about some of the stories sa ospital, siyempre, since na-assign ni Milano sa ER this past few days, and there were some crazy occurrences, so napag-usapan din namin ‘yon.
It didn’t take long before we heard another knock on the door. This time, Milano came to open it, and surprisingly, it’s one of the maids. “Mga Ma’am, Sir Milano, Sir Andreas, ready na po dinner.” Everyone looked confused.
That’s because we don’t do dinners in this family.
Weirded out, lahat kami lumabas sa room nila Ate Betsy, and we went to the dining room, even Andreas, who was here just to support Tia. They’re best friends eh, or something along the lines, basta they trust each other enough that they follow each other around.
When we got to the dining room, which is hardly used, by the way, everyone in the family was there. The head of the Bellanovas, my grandfather, Maximo Bellanova, was sitting at the middle. Then, his only daughter, Tita Margaret, Tia’s mom, was sitting on his left, with my mother and Tita Lucille on his right side. Kuya Dos, Tia’s older brother, was also in attendance, and he was sitting next to his mother. Which is weird, kasi he wasn’t at the wedding.
Kuya Dos is the Bellanova’s first son. This family barely has dinners, but when there is, ang pwede lang umupo sa left side ng Lolo ko are those who have Bellanova blood.
However, I stopped wanting to be associated with the Bellanovas, so I took a seat next to Andreas. I noticed my mother shooting me daggers from her seat, but I didn’t care.
“Arissa Erishelle,” Lolo Maximo called out for me and I looked up to meet his eyes. The hazel eyes that every Bellanova seems to have. “move your seat.”
My heart was thumping as I changed seats, and now, kaharap ko na si Andreas.
It was quiet, and everyone was just clashing their knives with the plates. We were having steak. Steak kasi dapat ‘yong pa-dinner sa wedding kanina, kaso things happened, and now, we’re eating wedding waste.
“The Tengs and the Bellanovas have agreed to a truce.” Lolo Maximo began to speak. “The result of this truce is simple. They agreed to continue the contract if we replace Leonel with another Bellanova.”
I narrowed my eyes. That can’t be Kuya Dos. Si Kuya Dos, he’s engaged to this girl na anak ng General. My grandfather won’t give up the chance to waste that pedigree. I glanced at Milano, who’s also confused.
Milano pointed at himself. “Skylar’s a great girl, but you removed me and my siblings from this family. What makes you think that I’ll accept this?”
Ate Betsy and Ate Judy glared at Lolo. “One word, lalabas kami ng bahay na ‘to. Alam niyo yan.” Ate Judy began and Tita Lucille glanced at them.
“Calm down, Judy, Lano. Trust me, kung ininvolve nila kayo, wala na tayo ngayon sa Cebu.” When the sisters heard that, napaupo silang dalawa kaagad, at kinaskas ni Ate Judy ‘yong knife sa plate, causing a loud noise coming from her plate.
“Marunong ako magpatigil ng blood circulation sa katawan, ayusin niyo sasabihin niyo, baka di ko magustuhan.”
“Is that a threat, Judithe Bellanova?” “Of course, you three have been living as Lopez-Bellanova. I don’t want to get on Steve Lopez’s bad side, so you three are automatically excluded.” He then glanced at me. “In the same manner, I also do not want to get on Leonel Casimiro’s hit list, so you, Arissa, are also off the choices.”
I looked around, at nagsimula na akong kabahan. I dreadfully glanced at the one person who wasn’t mentioned.
Oh, good Lord.
I dropped my knife and fork in realization of what just happened, at napahawak ako sa bibig ko.
No, no, anything but that.
I glanced at Tia, and then at Andreas.
“No.” I whispered. “God, no.”
“There wasn’t a choice, Rise. I had to do it.” Tia tried to assure me, and I looked at everyone in the room. Angry. Tia’s a child! She’s only 23! Bakit siya?! Tia, no, no, not Tia!
“Who’s your partner?” I asked.
“Armando Teng.”
My eyes went wide. Oh my God. Oh, dear Lord. Pati si Ate Judy, napatayo. “Armando? Teng?! That guy’s five whole years older than her! And that guy’s a walking health hazard! Do you guys have any idea how many times he’s been sent to the ER because of his sexual escapades?! Doon niyo ipapares si Tia? There’s a Teng her age, bakit hindi doon?!”
“Kasi wala tayong choice!” My mother began.
“Shut up, your son’s the reason why we’re here, in the first place.”
“Judithe Bellanova, ikaw—”
“What were you trying to call my daughter, Eleonora?”
So many voices were ringing inside my head. I can see Andreas’ pained expression, the anger in Ate Judy’s voice, my Tita Margaret trying to compose herself by gripping her knife. I can tell na she’s forced to do this. I can hear my mother, and Tita Lucille fighting, and Tia close to crying.
Then it stopped.
The noises stopped.
Hinampas ko ‘yong knife sa plato ko to make a clashing noise. “Everybody, shut up!” And with that, everyone stopped talking. The anger ended, the energy inside the room faded, and they sat back down to their seats.
“Arissa Bellanova—”
“With all due respect,” I glared at my mother. “I cut brains for a living. Alam ko kung saan ko itutusok ‘tong kutsilyo na ‘to to permanently paralyze you,” then I glared at everyone, “all of you, so please, listen to me as I speak.” I never blurted out threats in this house. I never dared to. I never wanted to.
But the only person who’s ever protected me in this estate is about to be sold off. How am I supposed to stay silent about that?
“I’ll do it,” I firmly said. “the marriage. Ako na.”
“Rise –”
“Tia, no.” I glanced at Ate Judy. “The Ates are right. Masyado ka pang bata. Ni hindi mo pa nga naranasang mag-clubbing at abutin ng past-two sa bar. Bakit ka magpapakasal?” Then I glanced at Lolo Maximo. “If it’s Lolo Leo that’s your problem, Sir, ako na po bahala sa Lolo Leo ko. He believes in me.” I stood firmly and I looked at the elders in the eye. “This was my older brother’s fault. Let me atone for it.”
Natahimik ang room with my sudden announcement. I held Tia’s hand from under the table. She spent all of her life protecting me. I have to protect her.
Even if this is the only way.
“You were a choice, Arissa, to be honest.” Kuya Dos began. “It was between you and Tia, but there were conditions that we took in consideration. While the biggest one was indeed, Sir Leonel Casimiro, there was also whether you can stand Armando Teng. Tia said that you couldn’t.”
I stared at Tia. “I lied. I can handle him.” I handled years of abuse in this family. What makes him think na I can’t handle a playboy? “You wouldn’t want to give this family’s prized jewel away to your enemy, wouldn’t you?” Tanong ko, and this seems to have triggered something in Lolo Maximo.
That’s because, Tia is, the Bellanova’s prized jewel. The smartest, most creative Bellanova in the history of all the Bellenovas. I’m sure this ticked something in my Lolo. His favorite, also, has always been Tia.
Kasi Tia’s the spitting image of my Lola.
But I needed more to pursue him.
“Also, my shares in this company. After the Lopez-Bellezos, ako ang may pinaka-konting shares sa kumpanya.” Kasi binenta ko na kay Tia karamihan. “Even if he gets tired of me, konti lang ang magiging losses natin. Compared sa kung si Tia ang pakakasalan niya.”
I held Tia’s hand tighter, and I felt water dripping on the top of my hand.
“Pick me. Let me marry the Teng. The losses will be smaller if I marry the Teng so let me, the almost-outsider sa pamilyang ‘to, to take one for the team.”
“Rise, I cannot believe you!” After the dinner, which was heavy, and nauseating, the responsibility of marrying a Teng fell onto me. I never wanted to marry a Teng, for God’s sakes, pero it’s Tia. Tia, who’s always protected me since the beginning. Tia, the only person who took care of my wounds kapag binubugbog ako sa bahay na ‘to. Tia, who ensured na makakapasok ako sa UP ng hindi alam ng nanay ko. Tia, who’s always been in love with Andreas. I cannot let her marry a man who’s not Andreas. Di bale nang ako. I’ve basically sealed my life to be alone with my dog, anyway. I can’t have children, and I am not interested in romance. A loveless marriage will be the least of my problems. I held her face with my two hands and I gave her a hug. “Tia, please.” “Rise, you’ve suffered all your life! God, I wanted you to leave this house for good, and then you pull off that brain-cutting stint of yours?!”
“I’m so sorry for your loss.” I bowed when I apologized to the woman. Someone died on our table during a craniotomy, and me, along with my senior, Dr. Lim, were there. We had to open her husband’s skull kasi nalaglagan siya nung gumuhong debris sa restaurant, pero hindi kinaya. He still died. The woman in front of me cried, and I heaved a heavy sigh. Dr. Lim and I excused ourselves from the grieving family, and we headed to the neuro lounge. The surgery went on for six hours din, so I stretched my neck, and rested on one of the sofas.Sharon Santos. That’s the name of the woman who lost her husband.I’m a second-year neuro resident. This isn’t the first time I lost a patient, pero I make it a habit to remember their grieving families. Hindi naman namin kasalanan that their family member died, pero we couldn’t save them. This is the least we can do.“How many fatalities?” Tanong ko kay Dr. Lim.
“Dr. Casimiro, I need you to take her to an MRI.” Dr. Lim told me at tumango ako. We just finished a craniotomy, and we were called straight to the ER, kasi may bumaliktad daw na tricycle. They need all the neuro and ortho people here. Tumango ako and I helped push the patient to the elevator, and to the MRI. Before we got there, I was paged. I narrowed my eyes, and it was the Nurses’ Station sa ground floor. It was a 911. I took my phone from my pocket and called Dr. Yamamoto. “Dr. Yamamoto, can you take over for me?” [“Today?”] I heard Dr. Yamamoto’s voice on the phone, grumbling as she suffled things around. [“Where are you? I’m coming”] “On the way to the MRI, papalit. I was paged 911 sa nurses’ station, baka Lolo ko eh.” [“Okay, I’ll meet you sa MRI.”] “Thank you, Lumi.” We dropped the call, at dumating na kami sa MRI. Surprisingly, nandoon na si Dr. Yamamoto, Lumi. She and I work together well, but at the time, we’re on different
“You’re getting married to Armando Teng?” I rolled my eyes nang sinundan-sundan na ako ni Kris sa ICU, as I checked the SATs ng mga patienteng under neuro.“Kris, don’t you have patients to round to?” I asked, at siya naman, napairap. “I was supposed to tell you, kaso one of our patients coded, I had to be here.” Pumamewang ako at binalik ko sa nurses’ station ‘yong tablet for the electronic charts. “At saan mo naman narinig yong balitang ‘yon, Kris?”“Nasa oncology ako kanina, tapos nagtanong-tanong si Richie Teng tungkol sa’yo, he let it slip.” I sighed, and then I smiled at Kris. “Nako, Arissa, wag mo akong madadaan sa pangiti-ngiti mo. Wala kang maloloko dito.”“Ngayong alam mo na, will you be my witness?”“Hell no.” Kris deadpanned, and he walked away, kaya agad ko naman siyang hinabol. Magkatabi lang kasi halos ang ICU
“You guys don’t have to do this, wala ba kayong mga surgery today?” I was dressed in a simple, white dress, at yong mga kasama ko, naka-outfit din sila. Umiling kaagad si Suzie. “Um, no. Hell no. Sa labas lang kaming tatlo para just in case na bigla kang magka-cold feet, kailangang may magda-drive ng getaway car.” I chuckled a little before I nodded. “Okay.” In the corner of my eye, nakita kong pumasok na sina Armando, his lawyer, na mukhang witness niya rin, si Attorney Ronquillo, and a Bellezo. I remember him as one of the Bellezos in the wedding. I’ve always known from Tia that the Bellezos and Tengs are allies, pero I didn’t think that they were this close. Speaking of Tia, she arrived with Andreas, right behind Armando and his witnesses. She gave me a confused look as she walked towards me. “I thought this was a private thing?” Tanong niya sa
I removed my scrub cap as we managed to save Mr. Rodriguez. “Nice save, Casimiro.” I sighed. Dr. Lagman and I scrubbed in with Dr. Lim, and Dr. Lim’s bringing in the good news to his wife. I went into the field without scrubs, so I don’t know kung saan napunta yong dress ko, and I’m tired. I got married and I went on the field within a day. I didn’t even notice na alas-diyes na ng gabi. Speaking of, nasaan kaya phone ko? I remember it being in my bag, but I was in the heat of the moment kanina pa, so I don’t know where my phone is, right now. I did, however, leave my bag with Kris. I looked at the OR board, to see if may surgery ngayon si Kris. Kris is a fellow in fetal surgery, pero he’s also studying under pediatric surgery, so he does some pediatric surgery din. The difference? Fetal surgery deals with babies sa loob ng tiyan ng mommy, and pediatric
“You bitch!” I rolled my eyes as I tossed her out of our house, half-naked. She cursed me, and I just gazed at her with anger. Naka-bra at panty lang siya, and I glared at her once again.“Between the woman who’s been sleeping with another woman’s husband, sino kaya ‘yong bitch sa ating dalawa?” I pushed her out of the door, and I threw her shoes out of the door. I picked up her red heels sa corner ng kama namin ni Armando, and I threw it out with her. “Leave.” Mabilis akong pumunta sa kwarto namin ni Armando, where he’s still there, sitting on the bed, almost amused as he saw me.But I ignored him.I took the woman’s clothes, and I went out to the balcony, tossing her clothes out of the house, completely.“Qizi, that’s Chanel.”“Dapat bang sinunog ko na lang, ha?” I removed my ponytail, and I threw my ba
This man’s stamina is out of my league. He finally put me down after seven rounds. Ano ba, wala bang recharge system 'yong orgasm niya? I guess he is a legend for a reason. It’s two in the morning, and I’m currently naked, and lying on his bare chest. “No more. Pagod na ‘ko.” I told him, before he even got another idea.I could hear Armando’s scoff. If there’s something I learned about him, after doing it with him so many times, Armando’s likes to go ‘tsk’ and ‘hmph’. It’s not that I mind, I just noticed it. He also doesn’t mind kissing. He’s also very ma-touch. He’s holding me in his arms, while one of his hands is playing with my hair.“I’m going to Tagaytay later.” He began. “Kaya nilubos ko na asawa ko. I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon.”I nodded. “Kukunin ko na mga aso ko mula sa caretakers
“Ah, Armando, good god.” I heaved another pant as he thrusted himself deep inside me. “A-Arman—” he stopped me from saying another word as he ravaged my mouth, still not stopping from pushing himself in and out as I gasped for air. “Quiet now, sweetheart. Don’t you have,” He panted, as he threw the last remaining article of clothing on his body, his polo, then he pushed me against the wall, and then he thrusted inside me, once again, sending vibrations all over my body. “co-workers, on today’s party? If you’re loud, they might hear you.” Armando smirked, that damned smirk that put me in this position, in the first place. “Well, ano pa ba ang di nila narinig? We’ve done it in the hospital, anyway.” I gasped for air as he pulled out, just in time before I came. It took me a while to realize that we’re doing it in the supply closet. It smells like alcohol, the rubbing one, in here. Medyo amoy sabon ‘rin. And it’s honestly not the time to question Armando’s room
I straightened my dress as I looked at myself in the mirror. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Me, dressed up in a red, spaghetti-strap, slit dress, with full make-up on. This wasn’t supposed to happen, but it’s happening. This happened because of my mother. My ever-so-pakailamerang mother. She found out that I wasn’t invited to the engagement party, so she threw a fit kay Armando. Sometimes, I am amazed as to how napakakapal ng mukha ng nanay ko, sa totoo lang.Anyway, Armando somehow managed to get me into the party, but because of the precedence of my appearance, hindi ako pupunta sa party as his date, but as a doctor from the bride’s father’s hospital. I picked the silver ones; mula sa earrings at sa necklace, and then I chose a silver watch, too. Then I got a pair of stiletto heels to match my attire. Armando also left me a red purse. I too
“Dalawa kayong residenteng naka-assign sa patienteng ‘yon! Had I and Sagazaki didn’t arrive on time, malamang, patay na ‘yong baby! Ginagamit niyo ba mga utak niyo o sadyang nandyan lang ‘yan sa loob ng kokote niyo bilang design!?” Sinigawan kaming dalawa ni Kris ng isa sa mga fellow sa pediatric surgery, si Dr. Elliot Welkins. Nakayuko kaming tahimik ni Kris sa conference room, kasama si Dr. Welkins at si Dr. Sagazaki, with Dr. Buenaventura and Dr. Lim, our department chiefs. We prepared ourselves for the worst. May patiente kami together ni Kris, a baby with a tumor sa liver niya. The baby, Ria, is just 10 months old, and dapat tomorrow, tatanggalin namin ‘yong tumor niya, kaso bigla siyang nag de-sat. Kung baga, ‘yong vitals niya, biglang humina, despite being on a few meds already.“Elliot, kumalma ka.” Dr. Buenaventura began. “Explain what happened, at bakit wala kayong dalawa sa NICU noong oras na
After the period na tinawag ni Lumi na ‘honeymoon period’, I went back to the hospital, and resumed my daily work. Of course, Armando became a part of that daily cycle of mine. Lumi calls it a ‘Malewife’, pero I don’t think he fits the standards. Sure, he cooks very well, to the point na three months into this marriage, I don’t think I’d be able to eat without criticizing at the back of my head ang kahit sino bukod sa kanya, but he can’t do anything else. He cooks, I clean the house. Kapag nag-pu-poopoo yung dogs sa diapers nila, he hands them to me like medical waste. Ako din naglo-laundry, kasi he doesn’t even know how to separate the lights from the darks. He kept complaining about the shades of grey on our first month, kaya I relieved him completely off laundry duty. Siya tiga-sampay, though. In contrast naman, Armando’s good at the things that I don&r
“I have to go to work, for real today.” Armando said as he kissed me on my cheek as we woke up. It’s the third day that I woke up naked in this room. I cracked my neck a little as I slowly sat up.Keeping up with Armando’s stamina is very difficult. We were basically locked in our room for almost three days, and lalabas lang kami to eat, feed the dogs, take the dogs for a walk, and take baths. I think we also did it in the bathroom for a few times.I touched my pelvis a little. Medyo masakit, because he really did tire me out.“Masakit ba? Should I call someone from the hospital?”I chuckled and shook my head. “I know naman what this is, I’ll be fine. You should get off to work.” I stretched a little as I watched him put on his underwear, and head to the bathroom. I also looked around, and picked up my underwear. Of course, I put it on, and then I went to the living room, and took out my laptop.
“My pager’s going batshit crazy.” I reached from the bed to my bedside table to get my bag and my pager – sandali, the bed? I looked around, and mukhang I somehow ended up in our bed? Last thing I remembered, nakatulog ako sa sasakyan. Did Armando bring me here?“Good boy, Bill.” I heard my husband from the living room, kasi nakabukas yung pintuan. I went out of the room, and I saw him, playing from within the fence with my dogs. It’s good na he likes them, and they like him, also. Naramdaman ni Armando ‘yong presensya ko and he looked up to meet my eyes. “Tulog na tulog ka, so hinayaan na lang kitang matulog.” He picked up Bill, who kept wagging his tail. “In the meantime, nagbonding kami nina Steve Jobs at Bill Gates, I hope you don’t mind.”Umiling ako as I smiled. “I don’t. Thank you.” Then I narrowed my eyes. “Oo nga pala. How did you know about Steve Jobs and Bil
“Here.” He gave it to me, which I accepted, albeit unwillingly. “Hindi ko mapapangako na never kang magiging ‘wife in the waiting room’. Kasi ang buhay, hindi naman yan namimili kung sino ang tatamaan ng tren bukas.”“Is this?”“My medical directive. Ikaw nilagay ko sa end-life care. Okay lang ba?”Napahawak ako sa envelope. Medical directives are ‘yong mga written, legally-binding papers na magsasabi kung sino ang in-charge sa medical decisions ng tao, kapag hindi niya na kaya. Kunwari, si Lolo, kapag kunwari, kunwari lang, na-coma siya, since ako ang in charge sa medical directive niya, ako ang bahala ‘yong bibitaw na ba kay lolo, or hindi.Armando, if he’s going to give this to me, does that mean that he trusts me? Enough to leave me in charge of this?“Alam kong bata pa tayo, lalo ka na. But when the time comes, alam kong alam mo na ‘‘yong tamang des
