Dear Ethan,

I suppose that since you're reading this letter, it means that I've decided to come to the airport to send you off. If I'm going to be completely honest, I didn't think I was going to go. Not because I hate you, but because I didn't know how I'd react seeing you leave. I have so many mixed feelings that I can hardly wonder where to start when it comes to saying goodbye.

Being a hopeless romantic, I believe that everyone deserves a chance at love. It might sound silly, but after the countless romance novels and movies that I've watched, how can I not?

My whole life, I believed the definition of love was two people being romantically attracted to each other and living happily ever after.

Oh, how wrong I was.

Ever since I could remember, I was known as the girl with very good grades, and I can't deny the fact that it was in fact true. I absorbed every material teacher taught with ease and excelled in tests. I know how to describe the process of protein synthesis in detail and

"I wish you all the best on your special day."I sent him a nervous smile and tipped him. "Thank you. Have a great day!"The warm glow of sunlight rested upon my shoulders. Today, Maya was going to become my wife. • Always Be Mine   Chapter 1

Maya's P.O.VThe morning sunbeams peeked through the clouds and cascaded onto my blinds, indicating that it was the morning. I rolled over to check the time on my phone.6:45 am.That means I had precisely forty-five minutes until the bus came. The first thing I do every morning is open my window, taking in the fresh morning air. After my short therapeutic session finishes, my typical morning routine begins as I fumble my way to the toilet to brush my teeth and wash my face.Once I finished getting ready, I headed downstairs for breakfast. The kitchen was an absolute battlefield with mom stirring chocolate chip pancake batter and cutting up fruits at the same time."That's a lot of food for just breakfast," I said. She shook her head in denial. "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day."With a defeated exhalation, I dug into the pile of food onto the table. Fifteen minutes have passed and I was finally cleaning my last place. My mom wouldn't let me leave the table unless I ate

Maya's P.O.VAfter I told Leah that I could go, she made it a tradition to talk about the trip every lunchtime, or realistically, any time she could. When she managed to convince me, it was about over a month until the trip. But before I knew it, time flashes right in front of me as I prepare to head to the auditorium for the final meeting before the actual event. We walked into the auditorium to realize that nobody was here. The room was pitch black. It didn't surprise me that we were the only ones here as we were always punctual. Well, most of the time.Putting our bags on the floor, we got comfortable in our seats before pulling out our sandwiches. A couple of minutes later, a group of people walked in, and nosiness filled the room. I frowned at Leah, wringing my hands together. She knew I didn't do so well in big crowds, so she held out her hand as a sign of reassurance. When we heard the sound of Ms. Wilson's voice enter the room, both of our eyes widened as we hurriedly shoved t

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 3

Maya's P.O.VI didn't even need an alarm to wake me up. As soon as I felt the slightest hint of sunlight shine through my curtains, my eyes were already wide open. If it were any other Monday, I would have groaned and rolled back to bed, but today wasn't just any other Monday. Today is our trip to Europe.Sliding off the bed, I skipped my typical morning routine and headed straight to the bathroom. There wasn't any time to mess around. I half-curled the ends of my hair and changed into some comfy sweatpants and a v-neck shirt.I was, without a doubt, the most forgetful person in the world, which meant I had to double-check everything before I left the house. Rummaging inside my suitcase and mentally ticking off all the things I needed, after feeling satisfied, I went down to the kitchen for the most important meal of the day.I poured some coffee from the counter and checked my phone.Eighteen unread messages from Leah.Apart from reading the very first message she sent at 4 am saying

    300. 301. 302. 303. 304.After Leah swiped the card, it made an electronic beeping sound. I ushered her inside and followed her inside the room. We threw out suitcases to the side.Leah sat on the edge of the bed."God, that was almost fourteen hours of traveling.""To be fair, we slept for the whole 11-hour plane ride."One of the first things I did was set a timer for 6 am. Despite knowing we had to meet at seven, I definitely did not want to be late, especially after seeing Ms. Wilson's angry outburst to Leighton. I fell into bed a short time later, my mind fading out to the sound of Leah's voice rambling about how excited she was to go to our very first destination of the trip.As soon as I heard the high-pitch sound coming from my phone, I woke up briefly, feeling disoriented. I blearily raised my head, my eyes checking the time. 6:00 am. I called Leah and told her to wake up, but all I received was a silent groan as she turned around with her back facing me. She snuggled into he

Maya's P.O.VAlessandro leads us across the road and into a narrow lane. About a hundred meters in, he stops in front of an Italian restaurant called Mama Leones. The building was a shade of brick red with a few cracks on the wall. Must've been an old place. The place was wide and open, not crowded tourists or anything. On the other end of the restaurant, there was a small garden. It was beautiful. Clusters of daisies were peeping through both sides of the fence, and the sun was shining through the trees. There was a welcoming of scents in the air as we walked inside.I stood and gazed at the building before me in awe. It radiated a warm feeling that made it seem like you were eating at home. The room was split into two big tables of eight chairs. Everyone moved steadily around the room and took their seats while I stayed standing and hesitating. Unlike the rest, I didn't have any friends here while everyone had their individual groups.I decided to wait for all the seats to be taken

To say I didn't think much about what Ethan said was a lie because I thought long and hard about it. No matter how hard I tried not to, I just couldn't. I was definitely becoming crazy. Replaying and evaluating his every move and searching for small signals. After we finished lunch, we went back to the hotel for some free time. Once again, I sat alone on the bus. But this time, every time I was caught staring at the buildings that we passed, Ethan would occasionally give me friendly grins as our eyes met.Leighton hesitated at first but decided to sit next to Ethan, even after his sudden outburst. She apologized with a pout, and he said it was okay — it wasn't — but I wasn't going to say that out loud. I mentally curse at Ethan for being way too kind and forgiving her way too quickly.I was currently sitting alone in the lobby, waiting for Leah to come back. The bright light in the room acted as the perfect reading light as I tried to escape the loneliness by burying myself in Gone wi

Maya's P.O.V"Does everyone know which role they're playing?" Gabe asked. He was also part of the football team, playing as the left tackle. His job was to protect the quarterback's blindside, which was Ethan, to prevent him from getting tackled. Being almost 6'5" tall, everyone referred to him as the mountain. His hair was an unusual mix between a light brown and dirty blonde, slightly ruffled, but he didn't look like he cared. Gabe was reasonably quiet compared to the rest of the team, always did his own thing and minded his own business. He was one of the bearable ones."We can't win if our team is unsynchronized. Everyone needs to know precisely what they're doing." He repeats. The team nods as he goes over the roles of each person again, probably for the fifth time now. Once he's done, he huddles us close together for a final pep talk before the real thing begins."The New England Patriots wouldn't have been able to win so many games if their team didn't know what they were doing

Ethan's P.O.VI gaze at my reflection in the mirror, taking in that this was going to be one of the very last times I get to do this. Was it weird to say that I'm going to miss this mirror?Or this bedroom.Or my everyday routine. My friends. My life here.My shoulders tighten when I hear a knock on my door, yet I felt relieved as the knock probably spared me from what would have been hours of overthinking.Hurrying over, I opened the door to see my dad standing in front of me. I was sủprised, to say the least. The last time he knocked on my door was when mom was still alive, which was years ago. And for the first time, he doesn't reek of alcohol and cigarettes."So, your flight to London is today?" he asked, still standing outside.I nodded. "At one.""You packed everything?"He sounded like he actually cared, which worries me."Yeah, I'm done packing.""That's good."A heavy silence fell and we stood there facing each other for what seemed like an eternity. His voice came out in a h

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 51

Maya's P.O.VThe exam week passed in a blur.My face was so deeply buried in textbooks that I had no recognition of what was going on around me. My friends would ask me to hang out, but I'd always end up declining. Time was precious, especially when exams were so close, which meant I couldn't let myself waste it.I could slightly recall the tingle I felt when I walked into the exam room. I hated being in exam conditions. It was suffocating. But I got over it anyways.Couldn't say the same about my break up with Ethan though.A few days later, we received our end of year school reports, which included the final exam grades that I studied so hard for. I let the happiness soak into my bones as I savored in my perfect final exam grades. All A's — except for that one A-minus — but I wasn't going to beat myself over it. For the first time in weeks, I finally felt relaxed. No more vigorous studying, no more deadlines, no more schedules to meet. Also no more relationship. After our exams, sen

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 50

Maya's P.O.VThe loneliness I felt was beyond anything I have ever felt. Before I knew it, my life changed significantly in very little ways, and in such a short period of time that it affected me more than I thought it would. Nobody brought up the conversation about Ethan again, nor dared to mention his name when I was around.Instead of spending all-day around people, I've become more introverted every since our breakup. I spend most of my days flipping through textbooks and rewriting my notes. One week prior to our exams, our teachers usually gave us free time in class to study, but everyone just procrastinated or talked amongst themselves. Nobody actually studied — except me.Being someone that couldn't study in a loud environment, I've asked the teachers to let me go to the library to study, so it's become a routine now. Just like every other day, I've headed to class for attendance before making my way to the library aka my second home."Look who's here," Jason said, approachi

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 49

Ethan's P.O.VI woke up the same way I had fallen asleep, tired, and emotionless. Rolling over to my nightstand, I removed the charging wire before checking my phone.Gabe: Wanna head to the gym today? It's not like I was going to do anything at home, so might as well.Ethan: Sounds good. Meet you there in an hour.Setting my phone to the side, I close my eyes. The moment I do, the image of Maya crawls into my head. It's been a week. One cold, lonely, and meaningless week of me avoiding her. I haven't replied to any of her texts, calls, and would head to the gym instead of eating lunch together at the cafeteria. This is what you have to do.As much as I don't want to, I have to.Grabbing whatever was closest to me, I buried my face deep into my pillow, screaming in the process. All this thinking was going to drive me crazy.I'm going to the gym. I'm going to gym out all my problems.Walking to my closet, I picked and changed into the first tank top and pair of shorts that I see. As I

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 48

Maya's P.O.VIt's been almost a week and not one single text from him.Even after a few days, I was still in a great deal of shock after my conversation with Ethan. In fact, it's eating me up so much that I couldn't even remember what I learned in class today. As much as I tried not to obsess over what he said, it seemed almost impossible considering I've sat on my table for thirty minutes and haven't started on any work yet."Honey, dinner's almost ready," my mom hollered from downstairs. Sucking up all the air in my lungs, I yelled back just as loud, if not louder. "Coming!"If I was going to be honest, I had no appetite whatsoever, but it would look suspicious if I didn't come down for dinner. My dad didn't even wait for my mom before stuffing his mouth with the cheese-filled lasagna. It was his all-time favorite so she would make them every Monday. Usually, families had their unhealthy cheat meals on Friday night, but not in this household. My mom believes that since Monday wa

  • Always Be Mine   Chapter 47

Ethan's P.O.VI glanced around to see where they were sitting before easing my way towards them. From far away, I could already hear the guys talking about which girls they thought were hot, and what they did after prom (which I'd prefer not to say).Scanning the table, the moment I laid eyes on Maya, a part of me couldn't believe that this gorgeous girl was my girlfriend. She was wearing a light-colored floral top that complemented her figure well. My gaze slowly traveled down and I take in her tight skinny jeans. My god."I love your outfit today," I said, giving her a quick peck on the lips. Her cheeks flamed as she tried to hide her smile. "Hey."Maya stared up at me as I slide into the seat net to her. She shifted her eyes to me, and the worry plastered on her face didn't go unnoticed. She shoved a fry in her mouth. Why was she worried? "You okay?" I asked.Once I settled down, I squeezed her thigh for reassurance, but she didn't muster up a reply. I tried to let it go until th

Right away, I noticed that everyone was super dressed up As I stepped out of the door, I felt a rush of cool air hit my body. God, I should have brought a coat with me or something. While we waited for Leah and Connor, I tried hard not to shift around and I was pretty sure he noticed considering he put his arm around my shoulder. "You okay?" Ethan asked, "you look nervous.""Just a bit," I smiled, "I've never actually worn anything like this before, especially in front of so many people."His brow wrinkled as he shook his head. "That's crazy, there's nothing to worry about. You're the most beautiful girl here."I frown. "That's a lie.""Well, my eyes are only going to be on you tonight so technically, it's not a lie," he shrugs casually. I guess it makes sense..."Are you ready?" he asked.I smiled and nodded as he intertwined our hands together. The moment our hand makes contact, a wave of ha
