RANDAL’S POV

“I have laboured and toiled to give you everything you have, but still, still, still...” My mother broke down in tears.

It was a sniff, her shoulders shook once and then a second time and she was done sobbing.

“Why are you hellbent on going against me? Why can you not see that I am trying to do what is best for you?”

“Mother,” I called her slowly. “Thank you for your effort but what do you mean? I am confused.” Despite how my heart raced and my chest closed up watching my mother weep over me, I remembered Koa’s lessons.

If I wanted people, especially my mother, to see me as a man rather than a child, then I would have to be a man. It was a confusing idea, but if there was anyone I could trust, it would be my brother. He was the only one my mother was scared of and my mother was the scariest person I knew.

“Confused about what? Randal, everything I work hard for, the life I live, everything I do, is all for you and somehow, why is it not good enough for you?” She yelled at
