After taking a warm bath because it was a cold morning, I was confused about what to wear for the interview. Should I look professional or casual? I finally resolved to look in between professional and casual.
Dressed in a blue knee length gown, I went out of my room and headed downstairs but I stopped abruptly midway. I had to see my mother first, I hadn't spoken to her throughout yesterday.
I turned around and headed for her room, turning the door knob clockwise to open the door. I saw a medical attendant trying to inject a yellowish substance into the drip bag. She was startled immediately when she noticed my presence, our eyes met and she was visibly shaken.
“Good morning ma”. She said in shutters.
“Did I scare you in any way”. I asked with furrowed brows.
“No ma, I thought it was Mr. Samuel”. She quickly responded.
“Very well then, please continue with what you were doing”. I said, rolling my eyes.
Samuel had somehow inflicted his workers with fear, at the sight of him they trembled. I tried to convince myself that I wasn't afraid of him as well but only playing along because of Mum.
She quickly turned around and empty the remaining yellowish substance into the drip. She walked nervously to my direction and I stepped aside making way for her to pass.
I walked into the room and stood beside Mum staring at her closely as I said.
“Good morning, Mum. I'm off to an interview with Adrian in respect of the wedding. I'm doing everything within my power to keep your treatment going and I'm sure you will be fine with time. Bye Mum, see you later”.
I hugged her lightly and walked out of the room bumping into Samuel.
“What the hell are you doing here? Adrian arrived a couple of minutes ago and is waiting for you in the car”. He yelled.
“I'm sorry, I came to say hi to Mum”. I shuttered in reply.
“I'm going to put an end to that right now” He said, locking the door to Mum's room.
“Samuel, what are you doing? You can't deny me access to Mum?” I screamed, trying to stop him.
“Watch me do it”. He said moving away.
I followed him instantly, pleading for the keys to no avail. He went out of the house heading to a flashy black car and I was still following him begging. It was when the car door opened that I kept quiet.
Adrian was seated inside and motioned me to go in, I obeyed. He had a short quiet conversation with Samuel before the driver drove away.
“We're ten minutes late, why?” Adrian said sternly, his voice deep and filling the car.
I pretended not to hear the question, looked away and avoided his gaze. I wasn't in the mood to cook up lies.
“I asked a question”. He roared softly.
“I'm a bit unwell”. I lied, shutting my eyes tightly.
The rest of the ride was silent. Adrian sitting at the left corner while I say at the right living a reasonable gap between us. He seemed to have a lot going through his mind but I couldn't lay my hands on them. For a moment I felt insecure being in a car with two strangers who were men. Although Adrian was my husband-to-be, he was still a stranger to me. What else would I call a person I barely know?
We soon arrived at the studio, it was bigger than I expected. I stayed put hoping the driver would alight and open the door. Meanwhile, Adrian brought out a costly perfume from his pocket and wore it, it smelled divine.
“Here, use this”. He stretched his hands in my direction without looking at me. I stare at the perfume in his hands wondering why he thought I needed a perfume.
“Thank you”. I mumbled, rejecting it.
“Why”. He asked with furrowed brows.
“I already wore mine at home”. I replied shuttering.
“Well, yours isn't good enough”. He said scoffing.
Before I knew it, he extended his hands towards me and used the perfume on me carelessly. He signaled his driver and he alighted to get the door for him. I waited patiently hoping he would do the same for me.
“Are you just going to sit there all day or come out for the interview?” Adrian yelled softly.
“I should have known better”. I whispered, reaching for the door.
Once in the studio, the interview commenced almost immediately. I felt nervous at first due to the series of cameras surrounding us but Adrian was relaxed on the couch he was sitting on.
The interviewer was a beautiful light skinned young lady, she wore a warm smile and sat directly opposite Adrian and I. The first three questions were simple but the fourth one was tough.
“Miss Jenny, please can you give a brief summary on how you met billionaire Adrian”. The interviewer asked.
“I…..I, I stammered in reply.
Adrian quickly intervened.
“We met 6 months ago during winter and started dating”. He replied quickly, making me gasp.
“Next question”. He added
I heaved a deep sigh of relief. Few more questions and we were done. I was super hungry since I didn't even remember to eat in the morning. But the hunger vanished instantly when I recalled that Samuel was still with the keys to Mum's room. Not only did he lock mum in there, my drawing materials were in there as well. I knew I needed to get the keys anyhow.
Adrian dropped me off at home without a word. I went inside to see the television on, the interview had already gone viral in just a few minutes. That was not what was on my mind. I looked around for Samuel but it seemed he was not in the house.
A maid passed by and I had to inquire from her.
“Hey Emily, is Samuel in this house?”
“No Jenny, he hurriedly left a few minutes ago”. She replied and walked away.
“Perfect!” I whispered and headed to his room instantly, praying that he would leave it open as usual. When I got there I turned the door knob clockwise and it responded. I quickly crept inside the room and started a thorough search for the keys.
I checked all the drawers, the wardrobe, his study table, all the shelves, under his pillow, everywhere but it wasn't there.
Soon I glanced at a dictionary on the table and saw it swelling. I moved closer and opened it, finding a bunch of keys in it. I doubt if it was the one I was looking for because the key Samuel used to lock Mom's door wasn't in a bunch, so I decided to go and test it. I headed to the door immediately and opened it only to bump into someone.
It was Samuel I bumped into. Our eyes met and I quickly looked away. I staggered to avoid falling while trying to hide the keys.“What the hell were you doing in my room, you fool?” Samuel yelled, making me fidget.I ransacked my brain for a befitting answer but it seemed my IQ was failing. I started stammering inaudibly, hoping I would form the right words to tell him but it seemed his patience was running out.“Did you suddenly turn deaf or dumb?” He yelled again.I took a step backwards as cold shivers ran down my spine. I gulped hard trying so much to avoid Samuels gaze, I could hear my heart pounding against my chest. I feigned clearing my throat in a quest to gather composure before I finally spoke.“I am sorry. I was looking for you, so I thought you were inside. Since I called your name and there was no response I decided to go in”.I prayed silently that Samuel believed the lie. He gave me a cold and intense stare and mumbled.“Just ever try to play games with me, else you wi
After two hours of working on my face, the makeup artists stepped aside to allow me look at myself through the mirror in front of me. I gasped for breath as I admired the masterpiece crafted on my face. Who would ever believe I was this beautiful?I wore my wedding gown and went out of the house. Samuel was standing outside with a devilish grin. He gestured to me to get into the car while he sat in the front passenger seat.“Are we supposed to ride together?” I asked with furrowed brows.“Are you going to decide that or do you have anything up your sleeves?” He replied giving me a cold stare. The drive to the event center was quiet and cold. We soon arrived at the venue and I alighted almost immediately. I looked around for nothing exactly.“Go and meet Adrian at once”. Samuel commanded, making me jerk. The bridesmaids approached me immediately and held the hem of my gown. I was about to leave when he called me back.“You had better behaved yourself”. He muttered. The large hall was f
The man left without me. How on earth did he expect me to find my way around this huge house? I went back into my room and shut the door behind me, then a thought crossed my mind; maybe the house isn't that complicated and surely I'll meet some maids and workers on my way, I'll ask them for directions.I opened the door again and stepped outside the room, shutting it slowly behind me. I started walking with cautious steps admiring the hallways, the artwork on the walls, the sculptures, the paintings, everything just seemed to catch my attention. Adrian sure had a taste for luxury, we once lived like this until Samuel cameras into the picture and ruined everything with his reckless way of selling properties.Suddenly, I realized I have been walking around the house for the past 30 minutes without getting to my destination. I also realized that I didn't even pass by a single maid or worker throughout this futile walk. I summoned courage and started again, guessing my way through every j
I wanted to give it another try but my phone battery was low and I needed to charge it. After plugging it into the socket. I went back to bed and laid down, praying silently for Mom. Soon, the warm hands of sleep pulled me out of reality.I did not wake up until the next morning and when I finally did, I felt a little bit lighter. I felt renewed with a familiar surge of energy within. I stepped out of the room walking with cautious steps. I carefully selected the turns I took carefully and to my greatest surprise, I found myself in the living room. Of course I am a fast learner.I was still in the living room when a maid called out.“Ma'am, breakfast is served”. Her voice was soft and homely.“Where's Adrian”. I asked, ignoring the heads-up.“He left very early this morning ma'am”. She replied.“Okay”. I muttered walking out of the sitting room.“Ma’am, how about breakfast?” The maid screamed behind me.“I'll be with you shortly”. I replied. The fact that Adrian was out made my joy kn
The blaring horn made the maid quickly scamper to her duty post, I had to check if that was Adrian. I took cautious steps walking slowly to the living room window through which you can view the gate. The car drove in and from the reckless driving, I knew it was Adrian. My heart suddenly began to race; I tried so hard to control myself, but the more I tried the more nervous I got.I was still at the window when Adrian alighted from the car with his suitcase and headed for the main entrance. I contemplated what to do. “Should I wait for him here and stop him immediately when he steps in?” I murmured. “No! I'm not bold enough to do that” I shrugged, discarding the thought instantly. Before I could come up with a better idea, the main entrance door flung open making my heart skip a beat. Adrian walked in and headed for his room at once without even noticing me.I heaved a sigh of relief. It then dawned on me that I was scared of Adrian, I hated myself for that. But fear will do nothing bu
“What the fuck”. I yelled and quickly scolded myself because it was past midnight.Adrian watches blue films! Why would he do such a thing? It dawned on me that he lacked morals because that's the only explainable reason why a successful man like him was patronizing a blue film channel.I turned off my internet connection and covered myself with the duvet. I think I have had enough; sleep had better arrive fast. The next morning, I woke up to a deafening knock on the door. I dragged myself out of the bed lazily cursing the knocker under my breath. “Screw whoever was disturbing my precious morning sleep”.I opened the door to find the maid I had a conversation with last night standing before me. She looked offended and reserved.“Good morning, ma'am”. She mumbled, feigning a smile; I could tell it was fake.“Come in”. I reply warmly ignoring her greetings and beckoning to her to walk inside my room. She hesitated but when I gave her a persistent look, she obliged. I led her to a comfor
If this information was correct, then it means the caller was Adrian's relative because of the “Sterling” surname. The person called the second time and I picked up.“Hello dear”. His voice came soft and welcoming.“Hello”. I managed to reply in stammers.“You are Genny right?” He asked, making me nervous.“Who are you please?” I asked, trying to clear my doubt. Since I got married to Adrian, no family member has come to visit, and Adrian never introduced me to any. How did he get my contact?“Please answer my question; you are Adrian's wife, right?” He pressed.“Yes”. I muttered.“And your name is Jenny right?” he asked again, stressing the “Jenny” word.“Yes, I am”. I replied visibly annoyed.“It's nice meeting you…….“Please who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, interrupting him.“I am Julian Sterling by name, Adrian's cousin”. He explained.“Okay. How can I help you please?” I asked, trying to define the purpose of the call.“No dear, I'm the one who wants to help you”. He re
“Interesting”. Adrian replied with a smirk. “So if you knew you were able to use your damn legs after all, why did you write me a note?”I didn't know what to say so I remained silent.“Answer me!” He yelled at once, making shivers run down my spine.I just stood there mute and visibly shaken.“I think I know why”. He said, touching his jaw. “Because I consented to your fucking request with a note, that gave you the guts to do the same”.Now I realized this man was very insane. Why would he have any problem with me writing him a note?“I'm sorry if you're offended. But I need a response”. I replied slowly with my head bowed.“What exactly do you want”. He said, rolling his eyes as if he didn't get the message from the note.“I need some money to change my wardrobe”. I replied.I hated the fact that I was standing in front of a man asking for money. It was a bruise to my ego, never had I imagined that life would maltreat me to the point of relying on a man for my upkeep.“How much do y
Samuel was standing at the door with a medical attendant by his side. The look on his face told me that I was in trouble.“Why the hell are you doing here?” He asked, shouting at the top of his voice.I stood up abruptly and stammered.“I……. I came to see Mom”.“How dare you?” He yelled again, making me take a step backward.I remained mute as usual. I refused to regret my actions and applauded myself for a job well done.“Get out of here, back to where you came from this minute, and don't ever show yourself stupid self till further notice”.I picked up my bag from the floor, tucked my hair behind my ear, and walked out of the room. Sammie and the medical attendant proceeded into the room and started discussing in low tones, I stopped walking abruptly and came back curious to hear what they were saying.I peeped and saw the medical attendant trying to inject the same yellowish substance into Mom's drip bag. I don't know why something inside of me was feeling suspicious about it but I
The driver quickly alighted and beckoned me to come out of the car, I had to bulge, not as if I had a choice. I walked briskly to Adrian's car accompanied by his bouncers and bodyguards. Why exactly didn't he just ask me to use the other cars in his convoy? The backseat door was opened and I sat inside cautiously. I felt Adrian's gaze on me but I tried to avoid looking back at him.“My home is just a stone's throw from here; I can walk down there”. I muttered.“We are heading to the office; enough of this going home nonsense.” He replied firmly.“You can't do this to me. I really need to visit home, it's very important”. I cried.“Driver, move this car!” Adrian ordered ignoring my pleas.I sank back into the car seat frustrated. Why was he just so difficult? My tear glands were alerted and so on tears began trickling down my face. Adrian kept a straight face all through and refused to have a change of heart.Suddenly, our car pulled up again. When I sat up to find out what happened, w
I resolved that I wasn't capable of telling Adrian about Julian yet, so I went ahead to narrate the incident with the crowd, skillfully excluding Julian's ordeal. When I was done, I remained mute, hoping he would just take my word for it and not bombard me with questions. However, he heaved a loud sigh and muttered.“Julian”.I wasn't sure I heard him well and I couldn't help but ask.“What did you say?”He stood up and mumbled, “Never mind”.He walked past me and headed to his room. I wasn't expecting any reply initially so I shoved it aside and went to my room. I tried so much to take my mind off Adrian's issue with Julian, but the more I tried, the more I became interested. Maybe I would have successfully shoved it aside if Julian didn't drag me into the picture.I curled up on my bed as usual hoping sleep would come knocking because it was just a few hours to midnight. I slept off a few minutes later but jumped off my bed and landed on the floor suddenly. I had a dream about Mom a
“Ma'am, what I meant is that my boss, the owner of this boutique, has granted you free shopping today. This means you can pick as many items as possible without having to pay a dime”. The cashier explained, beaming with a smile.“Who's this boss of yours?” I asked with furrowed brows.“Julian Sterling, your brother-in-law”. She replied.“You know what, I will not be taking any of these items home. It's either you allow me to pay for them or I return them”. I said matter of factly.“No ma'am, please don't do that, you will be putting my job on the line”. The cashier replied with a pitiful voice.I heaved a sigh and stared at the lady intensely. Of course, I wouldn't do anything that would make her lose her job because I understand what it means to make money.Suddenly, as I was racking my brains for the next thing to do, a large crowd started to gather around me. I was scared to my marrow; the boutique securities tried to scare away the crowd, but it didn't work. They kept chanting “Mr
Adrian's eyes widened in shock, he stood from where he sat and walked towards me. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest as I began developing cold feet. How on earth was I able to talk back to Adrian? How did I do it? As much as I know that he wasn't going to take it lightly with me, I do not regret it.He was close to me by now with his head high above mine. I fixed my gaze on the floor, looking at nothing in particular.“What did you say?” He asked slowly, I could feel his breath showering on my earlobe.“Nothing”. I replied in shutters. “I didn't say anything”.“Are you sure?”. He pressed further.“Yes”. I affirmed.“I thought as much”. He said and walked away.I heaved a loud sigh of relief and strode away silently. When I got to my room, I twisted the door knob clockwise and walked in. The first thing I did was to take off my clothes and walk under the shower. The stench of the hospital was glued to my body, and although I loved it, it had to go.After freshening up, I
“Who are they?” I asked with furrowed brows.“They said they are billionaire Adrian's……“Oh, I get it. Let them in”. I replied, interrupting the poor nurse. The nurse left my ward, and after a few seconds, the bouncers strode in. There were two, the same ones that brought me to the hospital last night. One of them leaned on the wall opposite my bed while the other strode in my direction.“How are you feeling today ma'am?” He asked with no atom of emotion in his voice.I nodded in reply.“Your husband wants you to be discharged; he said you would receive the rest of the treatment at home.” He announced.“But I have not fully recovered; why would he give such an order,” I asked at the top of my voice.“That's the same thing I said ma'am. The doctor will be coming to treat you at home”. He explained.“No!” I yelled, making the bouncers jerk. “I don't want to go home; I still need this hospital environment to facilitate my recovery.” I shrugged.Meanwhile, the bouncer who was leaning on t
