It was Samuel I bumped into. Our eyes met and I quickly looked away. I staggered to avoid falling while trying to hide the keys.

“What the hell were you doing in my room, you fool?” Samuel yelled, making me fidget.

I ransacked my brain for a befitting answer but it seemed my IQ was failing. I started stammering inaudibly, hoping I would form the right words to tell him but it seemed his patience was running out.

“Did you suddenly turn deaf or dumb?” He yelled again.

I took a step backwards as cold shivers ran down my spine. I gulped hard trying so much to avoid Samuels gaze, I could hear my heart pounding against my chest. I feigned clearing my throat in a quest to gather composure before I finally spoke.

“I am sorry. I was looking for you, so I thought you were inside. Since I called your name and there was no response I decided to go in”.

I prayed silently that Samuel believed the lie. He gave me a cold and intense stare and mumbled.

“Just ever try to play games with me, else you will regret it”.

I quickly walked away as fast as my legs could carry me while having a deep sigh; he believed the lie and didn't find out about the keys I took. I could still feel his devilish gaze on me and it made me want to disappear. I arrived at Mom's room in no time and tested the keys.

Luckily for me, three keys out of the bunch fitted into the door hole and opened the door. I took out one key from the bunch to keep as a spare and returned the bunch to Samuel's room unnoticed.

But Samuel didn't let go easily. He ordered the maids and workers to keep an eye on me, he even grounded me and restricted me from leaving the house except with his permission. I wanted to fight back, to ask him why he was trying to rip me off my rights, but it would be no use, he had silenced me with my mother's treatment forever.

However, I would be off his emotional shackles in a few days as the wedding was coming up soon. I couldn't help but anticipate what it would be like to live with billionaire Adrian. He didn't look too different from Samuel although he had this surge of care and concern about people.

I could tell that he doesn't want this marriage and so do I. I couldn't even consider this as my marriage because, how would I be getting married without my mother in attendance? I wish the period of the contract would just elapse quickly and mum would get better so we can just go back to our normal life.

“Adrian, how are your wedding plans going?” Marcus asked after sipping from his glass.

Adrian sat up and stretched his right hand to grab his glass, he took a sip and dropped it back on the table. He ignored Marcus's question for a moment and looked around the lounge they were in, nodding slowly to the soft music that filled the air.

“Are you going to talk or remain mute”. Marcus asked with furrowed brows.

“Hmm, I handed over the wedding plans to an event planner and since Samuel Winters wanted to take the lead, I had to allow him. You know I'm not even happy about this sudden arrangement so why should I be concerned?

“Alright”. Marcus replied. “You were good at the interview though”. He added, laughing.

Adrian played a smile at the corner of his lips as the memories filled his head. He despised every second of it.

“And that Jenny girl, she is something else. Her innocent face was so amusing”. Marcus added, by now the little laughter had grown into a full roar.

“That is enough you jerk, what would you have me do? I had to tell so many lies thanks to my grandmother”. Adrian said, hitting Marcus's left arm playfully.

“It is part of life dude”. Marcus muttered, patting Adrian on the shoulder.

Adrian left the lounge a few minutes later and headed home. He wasn't still comfortable with striking a deal with Samuel and the fact that he was helpless annoyed him a lot.

The thought of becoming a married man and sharing his space with some lady gave him uneasiness. He was used and satisfied with his single life; attending his business meetings seamlessly, going on long business trips as he seemed fit, having fun with ladies and living a free life. But everything was going to change in a matter of days.

After taking a cold shower that evening, he sat on his bed with his eyes glued to his laptop screen. His phone buzzed, making him sigh.

“Hello, Adrian Sterling speaking”. He sang into the phone tiredly.

“It's Julian”. The caller replied scoffing.

“What do you want? How did you even get my phone number?”. Adrian asked, sternly.

“Calm down bro, I just called to congratulate you on your wedding”. Julian replied in one breath.

“Save it”. Adrian said, rolling his eyes.

“We will meet at the wedding bro,” Julian replied, smirking.

“Firstly, I'm not your bro you jerk and just so you know, you're not invited”. Adrian replied, yelling.

“Come off it Adrian, it's part of the clause, every family member must attend your wedding”. Julian replied, rolling his eyes.

Adrian hissed loudly and hung up.

“Arrggghhh, I hate you grandma”. He screamed in frustration.

Julian was Adrian's cousin. Adrian had cut ties with Julian long ago after he revealed his through wicked self when he was trying to claim his inheritance; Sterling industries. Julian fought tooth and nail to steal the company from him but Adrian managed to pull through.

After that experience, Adrian vowed never to have anything to do with him again. The thought of setting his eyes on Julian again made his stomach twitch and the fact that he would be attending the wedding made him so uncomfortable. I mean who would feel comfortable around their enemy?

The man left without me. How on earth did he expect me to find my way around this huge house? I went back into my room and shut the door behind me, then a thought crossed my mind; maybe the house isn't that complicated and surely I'll meet some maids and workers on my way, I'll ask them for directions.I opened the door again and stepped outside the room, shutting it slowly behind me. I started walking with cautious steps admiring the hallways, the artwork on the walls, the sculptures, the paintings, everything just seemed to catch my attention. Adrian sure had a taste for luxury, we once lived like this until Samuel cameras into the picture and ruined everything with his reckless way of selling properties.Suddenly, I realized I have been walking around the house for the past 30 minutes without getting to my destination. I also realized that I didn't even pass by a single maid or worker throughout this futile walk. I summoned courage and started again, guessing my way through every j

Soon, the warm hands of sleep pulled me out of reality.I did not wake up until the next morning and when I finally did, I felt a little bit lighter. I felt renewed with a familiar surge of energy within. I stepped out of the room walking with cautious steps. I carefully selected the turns I took carefully and to my greatest surprise, I found myself in the living room. Of course I am a fast learner.I was still in the living room when a maid called out.“Ma'am, breakfast is served”. Her voice was soft and homely.“Where's Adrian”. I asked, ignoring the heads-up.“He left very early this morning ma'am”. She replied.“Okay”. I muttered walking out of the sitting room.“Ma’am, how about breakfast?” The maid screamed behind me.“I'll be with you shortly”. I replied. The fact that Adrian was out made my joy kn

The blaring horn made the maid quickly scamper to her duty post, I had to check if that was Adrian. I took cautious steps walking slowly to the living room window through which you can view the gate. The car drove in and from the reckless driving, I knew it was Adrian. My heart suddenly began to race; I tried so hard to control myself, but the more I tried the more nervous I got.I was still at the window when Adrian alighted from the car with his suitcase and headed for the main entrance. I contemplated what to do. “Should I wait for him here and stop him immediately when he steps in?” I murmured. “No! I'm not bold enough to do that” I shrugged, discarding the thought instantly. Before I could come up with a better idea, the main entrance door flung open making my heart skip a beat. Adrian walked in and headed for his room at once without even noticing me.I heaved a sigh of relief. It then dawned on me that I was scared of Adrian, I hated myself for that. But fear will do nothing bu

“What the fuck”. I yelled and quickly scolded myself because it was past midnight.Adrian watches blue films! Why would he do such a thing? It dawned on me that he lacked morals because that's the only explainable reason why a successful man like him was patronizing a blue film channel.I turned off my internet connection and covered myself with the duvet. I think I have had enough; sleep had better arrive fast. The next morning, I woke up to a deafening knock on the door. I dragged myself out of the bed lazily cursing the knocker under my breath. “Screw whoever was disturbing my precious morning sleep”.I opened the door to find the maid I had a conversation with last night standing before me. She looked offended and reserved.“Good morning, ma'am”. She mumbled, feigning a smile; I could tell it was fake.“Come in”. If this information was correct, then it means the caller was Adrian's relative because of the “Sterling” surname. The person called the second time and I picked up.“Hello dear”. His voice came soft and welcoming.“Hello”. I managed to reply in stammers.“You are Genny right?” He asked, making me nervous.“Who are you please?” I asked, trying to clear my doubt. Since I got married to Adrian, no family member has come to visit, and Adrian never introduced me to any. How did he get my contact?“Please answer my question; you are Adrian's wife, right?” He pressed.“Yes”. I muttered.“And your name is Jenny right?” he asked again, stressing the “Jenny” word.“Yes, I am”. I replied visibly annoyed.“It's nice meeting you…….“Please who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, interrupting him.“I am Julian Sterling by name, Adrian's cousin”. He explained.“Okay. “Interesting”. Adrian replied with a smirk. “So if you knew you were able to use your damn legs after all, why did you write me a note?”I didn't know what to say so I remained silent.“Answer me!” He yelled at once, making shivers run down my spine.I just stood there mute and visibly shaken.“I think I know why”. He said, touching his jaw. “Because I consented to your fucking request with a note, that gave you the guts to do the same”.Now I realized this man was very insane. Why would he have any problem with me writing him a note?“I'm sorry if you're offended. But I need a response”. I replied slowly with my head bowed.“What exactly do you want”. He said, rolling his eyes as if he didn't get the message from the note.“I need some money to change my wardrobe”. I replied.I hated the fact that I was standing in front of a man asking for money. No sooner had the words escaped my lips than Helen's eyes had widened in alarm and she let out a loud shout, but I was quick to react. I swiftly clamped my hand over her mouth, my fingers pressing gently against her lips to silence her. "Why are you shouting?" Her voice was trembling, and I could feel the depth of her anxiety. I took a deep breath and, as reassuring as possible, my voice calm and soothing, told her, "No, he won't. Just do it, and be unnoticeable," I urged, my eyes locked on hers.Apprehension clouded her gaze; she was terrified that her ruse would be discovered. I knew by now that I really had to get her on my side. My knees nearly grazing the floor, I stepped closer, speaking in a begging, urgent voice:"Please, Helen, I beg of you. I need to kno

And as I sat, lost in my thoughts, came Adrian's soft voice to pierce my fog."Sit, my love." But I didn't utter a word, my mind still wandering to some far-off place, engrossed in the thoughts that had occupied me all day.Adrian's voice came again this time louder, more insistent, "Sit, babe." The sound of his voice was like a summer's breeze-soft and soothing but it was enough to bring me back to reality."Hmm, I breathed in immediately," I said, my voice a little shaky, as I slowly came back to the present."Sorry, I was lost in thought," I apologized, and my eyes found Adrian's concerned face across the table. A look of worry marked his features, and a pang of guilt pinched in my chest as I looked at him for the first time. The scent of the food wafted up to me: savory, full, and growling my stomach with anticipation.Today's dinner was a light, elegant rice flour and chicken soup. What astonished me most was the way it had been presented: freshly arranged with a handful of color

While reassurance on my part was due, it would not go away, and a shadow of skepticism and doubt remained in Adrian's eyes. But I knew I needed to reassure him and he had to believe that I meant to help him."Serious, Adrian," I said, the conviction laced deep in my voice as I reached out and laid my fingers on his shoulders. My fingers came into contact with his skin, and the tension in his body started to dissipate.Adrian's face slowly broke into a smile, crinkles forming around his eyes as he stared at me. But then his face turned curious, his eyebrows arching upwards in a questioning curve."But how will you do it?" he wondered, his voice full of wonder, eyes wide with curiosity. I smiled again, and excitement and anticipation started building up in me."Don't worry, I will do wonders," I said confidently, looking right into Adrian's eyes.He was still in shock, his eyes wide with wonder, trying to digest the fact that I was offering to help him. Adrian and I walked down the hall side by side; our footsteps echoed in a slow, mannered tempo that almost seemed to coordinate with the beating of my heart. We walked in silence, the only sound being the soft rustle of our clothes and the creaking of the floorboards beneath our feet. Finally, we reached the door to our room, and Adrian pushed it open, gesturing for me to enter. As I was about to step inside, my eyes automatically fell on the two maids standing in the corner, speaking in hushed tones and whispering to each other. I knew beyond any doubt that they spoke of Adrian and me, their eyes darting toward us with curiosity and suspicion. But I wasn't scared, not in the least. After all, Adrian and I were married, and we had nothing to hide.We closed the door behind us, and Adrian and I sat down on the bed, the soft mattress wrapping us in its comfort. Adrian turned to me, his eyes locked onto mine, and in a romantic tone of voice, he asked,"How are you?" he said, and his word

And then, as if the dam had finally burst, I began to cry, great racking sobs that seemed to shake my very foundations, as if I were letting all the built-up emotions inside me go.And the tears just kept on coming. I wailed, my voice ringing out in the empty space, a pitiful, anguished sound, as if something was being ripped from the very soul itself. The hot, salty tears rolled down my cheeks like a river breaking its banks: unstoppable, relentless. I had lain on the floor, crying and weeping; my body was shaking with sobs, like the accumulated pressure of emotions finally found a way to break loose.Lying here, I felt as though I'd been plunged deep into an ocean of despair, with no life preserver to cling to. Then, somewhere in the depth of me, something seemed to turn over-a determined ember that refused to be doused."It's all right, Jenny," I said to myself, my voice no more than a soft, quiet whisper, as I stood up slowly, my legs shaking right beneath me. "You will be fine."
