The man left without me. How on earth did he expect me to find my way around this huge house? I went back into my room and shut the door behind me, then a thought crossed my mind; maybe the house isn't that complicated and surely I'll meet some maids and workers on my way, I'll ask them for directions.
I opened the door again and stepped outside the room, shutting it slowly behind me. I started walking with cautious steps admiring the hallways, the artwork on the walls, the sculptures, the paintings, everything just seemed to catch my attention. Adrian sure had a taste for luxury, we once lived like this until Samuel cameras into the picture and ruined everything with his reckless way of selling properties.
Suddenly, I realized I have been walking around the house for the past 30 minutes without getting to my destination. I also realized that I didn't even pass by a single maid or worker throughout this futile walk. I summoned courage and started again, guessing my way through every junction. After another 10 minutes, it dawned on me that I was lost, I have been walking around in circles all this while.
I couldn't help but let out a loud scream, I screamed so loud that I started feeling dizzy. I fell to the floor, weak. Soon, many people gathered around me, I could feel several hands carrying me. I thanked my stars because I thought I was being rescued and was in safe hands, only to be thrown on the hard marble floor like some pieces of trash.
His bouncers walked out immediately leaving me with Adrian. I landed on the floor with a loud thud, one would think that I had broken my bone
“Are you normal?” A familiar voice yelled, sending shivers down my spine.
I could barely open my eyes, my back was hurting badly and my dizziness tripled.
“I sent for you for the past two hours and all you could do was play around”. He yelled again.
I was beginning to get a hold of myself. I sat up and looked up at Adrian, our gaze meeting each other. I wanted to explain the entire ordeal to him but I dismissed the thought immediately it crossed my mind. What's the point of defending myself? It's not like it would change his perspective towards me.
“Why did you send for me?” I bolted out, looking away.
Adrian gave me a cold stare, I could still feel his eyes on me for some seconds. I knew a lot was burning inside him but he was unable to let it out. I silently prayed for him to say whatever he wanted to say and leave me alone. His presence was unbearable, I felt like I was going to suffocate.
“Jenny or whatever you call yourself, I didn't marry you for fun and I hope you still have that in your head?”. He said in one breath, halfway between yelling and speaking softly.
He paused for a few seconds. I knew he was expecting me to affirm what he said but I wasn't going to. He continued anyway.
“I married you strictly for business and as such, there are some laid down rules that would guide you through the period of this God-damned marriage”. He said his voice was more precise this time.
Adrian started moving around me with his two hands deep in his trouser pockets. He began listing the rules one by one, as though I were his daughter.
“Firstly, you dare not reveal to anyone the story surrounding this marriage, no one has to know. The contract we signed remains a secret. Is that clear?”. He asked with much emphasis on the “clear”.
I nodded in reply, still maintaining my sitting position on the floor. He cleared his throat and resumed his revolution around me as he continued.
“You know the duration of this marriage right?” He asked.
I nodded again. I wished he could just go straight to listing out the rules without stressing me with responses.
“What's the duration?”. He asked, stopping abruptly behind me.
I hesitated before muttering. “One year”.
“Throughout this one year, you are to follow me to all the necessary events and business trips that demand your presence”. He said and waited for me to nod before he proceeded.
“And lastly, so you know, you are just a mere figurehead so do not exceed your boundaries. You have zero right over me or anything that concerns me. This simply means that I need you to stay out of my business”. He said in conclusion, his voice was high and reverberated through the walls of the balcony.
I gave my last nod and he muttered “Good, you can go back to wherever you were”.
I couldn't believe it. We just got married and on the same day, he dispensed some sick rules on me. He made his way out of the room but I called him back.
“This house is too huge, I don't know my way back to my room”. I mumbled with a steady face.
Adrian turned around and looked at me with furrowed brows.
“So what should I do about that? Get the maids to direct you to your room” with those rude words, he strode back to his study.
I curled myself up into a ball. Just a few hours with him and I already feel terrible, what would the rest of the contract period be like? Adrian was domineering, rude and stern, I don't deserve to be with a man like him. I felt used and exploited. With so many rules to obey and a huge house to roam around, I doubt if I would last.
I rose up from the fall and walked out of the balcony, dragging my feet along. I met a maid immediately. I stepped out and she guarded me to my back. I ensured to take note of every detail, every turn we took and every door we went through. I didn't want to ask for anyone's help again.
Once in my room, I claimed the soft queen size bed and laid down. It was soothing and satisfying. A series of thoughts clouded my mind, particularly about Mom. I was not away from her for up to a day, there I was missing her badly. I felt like staying beside her.
I quickly jerked out of the bed and headed to the wardrobe, searching through the heap of clothes for my phone. When I found it, I dialed Samuel's number instantly. It rang twice but he didn't pick up, I tried three more times and there was no response.
“What's wrong?”. I whispered.
I wanted to give it another try but my phone battery was low and I needed to charge it. After plugging it into the socket. I went back to bed and laid down, praying silently for Mom. Soon, the warm hands of sleep pulled me out of reality.I did not wake up until the next morning and when I finally did, I felt a little bit lighter. I felt renewed with a familiar surge of energy within. I stepped out of the room walking with cautious steps. I carefully selected the turns I took carefully and to my greatest surprise, I found myself in the living room. Of course I am a fast learner.I was still in the living room when a maid called out.“Ma'am, breakfast is served”. Her voice was soft and homely.“Where's Adrian”. I asked, ignoring the heads-up.“He left very early this morning ma'am”. She replied.“Okay”. I muttered walking out of the sitting room.“Ma’am, how about breakfast?” The maid screamed behind me.“I'll be with you shortly”. I replied. The fact that Adrian was out made my joy kn
The blaring horn made the maid quickly scamper to her duty post, I had to check if that was Adrian. I took cautious steps walking slowly to the living room window through which you can view the gate. The car drove in and from the reckless driving, I knew it was Adrian. My heart suddenly began to race; I tried so hard to control myself, but the more I tried the more nervous I got.I was still at the window when Adrian alighted from the car with his suitcase and headed for the main entrance. I contemplated what to do. “Should I wait for him here and stop him immediately when he steps in?” I murmured. “No! I'm not bold enough to do that” I shrugged, discarding the thought instantly. Before I could come up with a better idea, the main entrance door flung open making my heart skip a beat. Adrian walked in and headed for his room at once without even noticing me.I heaved a sigh of relief. It then dawned on me that I was scared of Adrian, I hated myself for that. But fear will do nothing bu
“What the fuck”. I yelled and quickly scolded myself because it was past midnight.Adrian watches blue films! Why would he do such a thing? It dawned on me that he lacked morals because that's the only explainable reason why a successful man like him was patronizing a blue film channel.I turned off my internet connection and covered myself with the duvet. I think I have had enough; sleep had better arrive fast. The next morning, I woke up to a deafening knock on the door. I dragged myself out of the bed lazily cursing the knocker under my breath. “Screw whoever was disturbing my precious morning sleep”.I opened the door to find the maid I had a conversation with last night standing before me. She looked offended and reserved.“Good morning, ma'am”. She mumbled, feigning a smile; I could tell it was fake.“Come in”. I reply warmly ignoring her greetings and beckoning to her to walk inside my room. She hesitated but when I gave her a persistent look, she obliged. I led her to a comfor
If this information was correct, then it means the caller was Adrian's relative because of the “Sterling” surname. The person called the second time and I picked up.“Hello dear”. His voice came soft and welcoming.“Hello”. I managed to reply in stammers.“You are Genny right?” He asked, making me nervous.“Who are you please?” I asked, trying to clear my doubt. Since I got married to Adrian, no family member has come to visit, and Adrian never introduced me to any. How did he get my contact?“Please answer my question; you are Adrian's wife, right?” He pressed.“Yes”. I muttered.“And your name is Jenny right?” he asked again, stressing the “Jenny” word.“Yes, I am”. I replied visibly annoyed.“It's nice meeting you…….“Please who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, interrupting him.“I am Julian Sterling by name, Adrian's cousin”. He explained.“Okay. How can I help you please?” I asked, trying to define the purpose of the call.“No dear, I'm the one who wants to help you”. He re
“Interesting”. Adrian replied with a smirk. “So if you knew you were able to use your damn legs after all, why did you write me a note?”I didn't know what to say so I remained silent.“Answer me!” He yelled at once, making shivers run down my spine.I just stood there mute and visibly shaken.“I think I know why”. He said, touching his jaw. “Because I consented to your fucking request with a note, that gave you the guts to do the same”.Now I realized this man was very insane. Why would he have any problem with me writing him a note?“I'm sorry if you're offended. But I need a response”. I replied slowly with my head bowed.“What exactly do you want”. He said, rolling his eyes as if he didn't get the message from the note.“I need some money to change my wardrobe”. I replied.I hated the fact that I was standing in front of a man asking for money. It was a bruise to my ego, never had I imagined that life would maltreat me to the point of relying on a man for my upkeep.“How much do y
“Who are they?” I asked with furrowed brows.“They said they are billionaire Adrian's……“Oh, I get it. Let them in”. I replied, interrupting the poor nurse. The nurse left my ward, and after a few seconds, the bouncers strode in. There were two, the same ones that brought me to the hospital last night. One of them leaned on the wall opposite my bed while the other strode in my direction.“How are you feeling today ma'am?” He asked with no atom of emotion in his voice.I nodded in reply.“Your husband wants you to be discharged; he said you would receive the rest of the treatment at home.” He announced.“But I have not fully recovered; why would he give such an order,” I asked at the top of my voice.“That's the same thing I said ma'am. The doctor will be coming to treat you at home”. He explained.“No!” I yelled, making the bouncers jerk. “I don't want to go home; I still need this hospital environment to facilitate my recovery.” I shrugged.Meanwhile, the bouncer who was leaning on t
Adrian's eyes widened in shock, he stood from where he sat and walked towards me. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest as I began developing cold feet. How on earth was I able to talk back to Adrian? How did I do it? As much as I know that he wasn't going to take it lightly with me, I do not regret it.He was close to me by now with his head high above mine. I fixed my gaze on the floor, looking at nothing in particular.“What did you say?” He asked slowly, I could feel his breath showering on my earlobe.“Nothing”. I replied in shutters. “I didn't say anything”.“Are you sure?”. He pressed further.“Yes”. I affirmed.“I thought as much”. He said and walked away.I heaved a loud sigh of relief and strode away silently. When I got to my room, I twisted the door knob clockwise and walked in. The first thing I did was to take off my clothes and walk under the shower. The stench of the hospital was glued to my body, and although I loved it, it had to go.After freshening up, I
“Ma'am, what I meant is that my boss, the owner of this boutique, has granted you free shopping today. This means you can pick as many items as possible without having to pay a dime”. The cashier explained, beaming with a smile.“Who's this boss of yours?” I asked with furrowed brows.“Julian Sterling, your brother-in-law”. She replied.“You know what, I will not be taking any of these items home. It's either you allow me to pay for them or I return them”. I said matter of factly.“No ma'am, please don't do that, you will be putting my job on the line”. The cashier replied with a pitiful voice.I heaved a sigh and stared at the lady intensely. Of course, I wouldn't do anything that would make her lose her job because I understand what it means to make money.Suddenly, as I was racking my brains for the next thing to do, a large crowd started to gather around me. I was scared to my marrow; the boutique securities tried to scare away the crowd, but it didn't work. They kept chanting “Mr
Adrian turned to him, his eyes narrowing slightly, like a curtain pulled against the light."Who are you and what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his voice calm and peaceful, like some stream meandering its way across a tranquil countryside. The words seemed to fall like a question mark, while waiting for an answer. His mask of confidence fluttered; his face slipping open onto a glimpse of uncertainty underneath. "D-dude, I'm so sorry," he stammered, the words skipping from his tongue like a scratched record, hesitant and unsure. "I must have mistaken you for someone else," he finished saying, the sentence trailing off almost at a sigh over the acknowledgment of his mistake.Adrian's eyes, like a drill trying to pierce through steel, pierced into the soul of the man in search of answers. With a dismissive sigh, like a wave that washes over the shore, Adrian turned and walked out of the shop, leaving the man standing alone, like a statue, frozen in time.As Adrian drove back home
We then got into his car, with the sleek and black vehicle glowing in the bright sunlight, softly upholstered, inviting leather, like a cozy cocoon. As we started driving to the cafeteria, it was a pleasant feeling with wind whistling through my hair, a song of joy, a sense of abandon, something like a caged bird free at last to soar into an open sky with wings of pure exhilaration. We took snapshots inside the car; our laughs, our smiles froze in those momentary flickers of time, like amber-preserving memories."Let's go and eat, please, I'm famished," Mr. German said. There was such a lot of warmth in his voice as he held my hands, sparking electrical currents into my body-like those jolts of adrenaline received on a roller coaster. We gained entrance to the cafeteria, where the savory smell of freshly cooked food filled the air, teasing my taste buds like a savory mist and making me hungry. We sat at a table, and I called out to the waiter; my voice sounded across the room, ringing
Soon thereafter, I whined up the tires on approach to this company's parking lot in protest and brought it to a stop: the screeching just seemed to hang in the air for a moment or two there-a scream of tortured rubber with its shudder, lurch to a stop, and coughing, protesting motor dying out.I breathed deeply, and the tension began to seep from my body like air from a balloon that has been punctured; my shoulders sagged in relief as my heart, though still racing, drummed a slower, more measured beat in my chest. The instant I got out of the car, bright sunlight wrapped itself around me, its warm rays fondling my frayed nerves. A cool breeze ruffled my hair with scents of flowers in bloom and newly cut grass, some sweet fragrance which seemed to soothe the senses, the racing heart."Good morning," the voice of the receptionist greeted happily, a vivid contrast to turmoil that was churning within me, the warm and inviting smile spreading like a sunrise."Good morning, dear," I replied
I couldn't hold myself any longer and burst out laughing. My laughter filled the room, bounced off the walls, and resounded everywhere. Deep, rich, full-bodied, a sound that seemed to emanate right from the core of me.My body was racked with mirth: my shoulders shook, my chest heaved with it, while I stood, my eyes shining with tears, my face alight with the joy of being finally happy-happy as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and a burden from my heart.Smiles danced across my face as I felt unhindered, high, enjoying my victory and revenge. It sounded like the laughter had washed all my cares off me, washed off all the fears, leaving me light and free, high.Just then I turned toward leaving the room; Adrian was stopping me off with words to hang upon for a moment-challenge and more. He told me where I could possibly go, without shame, or remorse, stared enticingly through dilated nostrils. And in that glance, I shivered, I thrilled, feeling a rush down my spine, me
Sweet and tangy, it did a tango on my tongue, the flavor bursting inside my mouth as for one moment it made me forget the tension that was building.I closed my eyes, savoring the taste, and the coolness of the juice as it ran down my throat like balm.Having drunk the juice, I went to the room where Adrian lay asleep-my intentions pure, my heart set on just sleeping well for tomorrow, a day to report to a new job. I lay down on the bed and feigned sleep, my eyes closed, breathing slowly. It was as if the darkness just wrapped itself around me, in a soft, comforting blanket. It wrapped around me, shielding me from the world. I felt my eyelids growing heavy, body relaxing, letting all the weariness of the day wash over me.But it wasn't to last. I felt the touch of Adrian's hand on my lap, the tips of his fingers touching my skin as an electric jolt bolted through my body. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up in a fluster, my voice ringing out loud."Stop it, please!" I screamed at him,
Slowly, I started getting ready, undressing and cleaning off the makeup from my face. Tender strokes of the wipe were soothing onto my frazzled nerves as I did everything really slowly.I relished this transformation-taking place, akin to a caterpillar finally making its way out into the world from its cocoon, rebirthed, renewed. I changed into something sexy and hot-a tight gown, fitted at my curves to a T, cuddling me at just about all the right places like into a second skin. And then, looking into the mirror well, I couldn't help but feel this surge of pride in me, a surge of confidence-half a queen surveying her kingdom. My full, round breasts stood to attention, their tender peaks upward like delicate water droplets glistening with a subtle sheen, like the first light of dawn breaking over the horizon. The dress was tight, showcasing every bend and contour of my body, like a work of art on display. I felt like a different person altogether, one ready for the world to bring it on
"It's okay, it's fine," I exclaimed heatedly, though with defeat; the words burst in a gush from my lips in one tumble, with every syllable coated with desperation and despair. I was tired of groveling, tired of reaching out to him, tired of the damn rejection that had worn down my heart through relentless barrage.I sprang up at once, swift, sure movements in every limb; my anger bore me on like a billow against which the shore breaks.I clutched onto the wicker food basket tight, the crackling of wicker in protest as I hoisted it from the table-the only sound heard through the quiet like a shout of defiance. The heavy feel of the basket in my hands was real and reminded me of the work that I had done for our love, so coldly thrown in the trash.I went out from behind the door of his office, my footsteps stumbling on the cold, hard floor; the sound itself appeared to resound inside the silence, an ultimatum, a declaration. The door stood looming over me, a barrier between me and the
"Yeah, we need to talk, Adrian," I said, my voice shaking with emotion; it was a tearful and desperate tone. But Adrian did not even bat an eyelash due to my distress; he sat looking at the screen of his phone. And in that instant, I felt a pang of sadness and a bit of despair, feeling finally that he was lost, his heart hardened against me.I stood there, feeling so vulnerable and exposed, as Adrian walked over to the door, his face still fixed on the screen, a smile playing in the corners of his lips. He locked the door and settled into the chair, his eyes never leaving the phone."What brought you here?" he asked, his voice unemotional, as if he was speaking with a complete stranger. And he added, releasing words like profound cuts in my heart: "And for what reason are you dressing up as a harlot?" His face was stuck to the phone without turning toward me for even one second, so that he might not feel ashamed of looking into my face. The wave of pain and humiliation mounted in my h
I went to the office upbeat, buoyant, my racing heart with anticipation. I could not wait to see the scenario unfold before my eyes-to be able to eventually face Adrian and get my answers. The steps were huge, slow, and sure while I strode into Adrian's office; I felt a mission was well underway-my feet seemed not to feel or touch the floor, impelled by this almost primeval, instinctive propulsion.Upon reaching the door, I was stopped by a soft voice."Excuse me, ma", it said, and turning round, I saw a beautiful woman, fair in complexion, clad in an all-splendid red-some really pretty woman with her curly brown hair, bright smile. She looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and politeness.Who are you, please?" she asked in a soft melodic voice."And who do you look for?" She looked at me directly into my face, her eyes as if probing my brain. I felt the flutter of a bird in my chest, which I managed to still, reminding myself why I was there.I smiled confidently, self-assured."I
