“Ma'am, what I meant is that my boss, the owner of this boutique, has granted you free shopping today. This means you can pick as many items as possible without having to pay a dime”. The cashier explained, beaming with a smile.

“Who's this boss of yours?” I asked with furrowed brows.

“Julian Sterling, your brother-in-law”. She replied.

“You know what, I will not be taking any of these items home. It's either you allow me to pay for them or I return them”. I said matter of factly.

“No ma'am, please don't do that, you will be putting my job on the line”. The cashier replied with a pitiful voice.

I heaved a sigh and stared at the lady intensely. Of course, I wouldn't do anything that would make her lose her job because I understand what it means to make money.

Suddenly, as I was racking my brains for the next thing to do, a large crowd started to gather around me. I was scared to my marrow; the boutique securities tried to scare away the crowd, but it didn't work. They kept chanting “Mrs. Adrian,” “wife of a bad billionaire,” “Mrs. Sterling, your husband is an asshole,” and other abusive words my ears couldn't record.

Fortunately for me, Adrian's bouncers came to my rescue and led me safely in the car. I heaved a sigh of relief as I gasped for breath.

“Why did they behave in that manner?” I asked, looking at the bouncer sitting in the back seat with me.

“I think someone put them up to it”. He replied, still looking forward.

“Why would anyone do that?” I asked again.

“You never can tell. Rivalries, haters, and wicked people are everywhere; they will always take advantage of the least opportunity to humiliate you”. He explained.

I leaned back into the car seat and took a deep breath, I was still trying to recover from the shock of the incident. I thanked my stars that I wasn't attacked or assaulted by the crowd; it would have been disastrous. But on second thought, I realized it would have been a blessing in disguise: a chance to go back to the hospital. I smiled at the thought.

We were already in front of Adrian's gate and made efforts to drive inside. I found it uncomfortable to call any of Adrian's property mine because I knew I didn't belong there and my stay in his house was temporary. I knew I had a home, even if it was ruined and rendered into something that wasn't fitting to be called a home. It will be well someday.

Meanwhile, I alighted from the car and grabbed my items from the boot refusing help from the workers. I quickly ran upstairs into my room and shut the door behind me immediately. I had an urgent call to make. I dialed the number and held the phone close to my ear, waiting for the person to pick up.

“Hello dear, I wasn't expecting your call; what a pleasant surprise”. Julian sang into the phone with one breath.

“Why the hell did you pay for my fucking items without my permission?” I yelled at the top of my voice.

For a moment, I paused to listen to myself speak, the boldness that accompanied my authoritative words. I am no doubt a brave woman on the inside, but it baffles me how Adrian and Samuel manipulated my helplessness and portrayed me as timid and docile.

A vibration from my speaker reminded me that I was on a call, a serious one at that.

“When did it become a crime to be nice to my sister-in-law?” He asked, smirking.

I remained silent trying to figure out the best response to give him.

“Meanwhile, I'm sorry for the unpleasant encounter with the crowd earlier today; people are always rough, you know.” He said trying to feign being emotional.

My brows furrowed instantly, I could feel a wave of sarcasm in his voice.

“How did you know about that?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“It happened in my premises remember, besides nothing is hidden under the sun”. He replied, shrugging.

“I am going to ask you another question, and I want an honest reply if you still have an iota of dignity left in you”. I said firmly.

“Anything for you, dear,” Julian replied.

I took a deep breath, trying to overlook the fact that he was getting on my nerves by calling me “dear”.

“Did you have a hand in the unpleasant crowd incident today”. I asked with a firm voice.

“Maybe”. He replied, chuckling.

“Don't mess with me”. I shouted.

“Dear, I would advise you not to get yourself all worked up; your darling husband should understand better.” He replied and hung up.

I was dumbfounded for some seconds, trying to wrap my head around the words that came out of his mouth. The words of Adrian's bouncer in the car on our way back from the boutique came alive in my head. I thought Julian was Adrian's relative or cousin precisely; why would he do a thing like that?

However, when Adrian came home, I found myself standing before him while he scrolled through his phone visibly annoyed. He kept switching glances between me and his phone screen simultaneously, making me nervous. He has stepped into the home unannounced and unusual, he wore this indescribable facial look that got everyone wondering what the problem was.

“Is this true?”. He asked, showing his phone screen. It was a social media platform with pictures of me struggling with the roaring crowd; it bore a bold headline: “Billionaire Adrian's wife faces public abuse”. The news had already spread.

I gulped hard avoiding Adrian's persistent stare. What else did he expect me to say?

“Yes, it's true”. I affirmed.

“How did it happen?” He asked, placing the phone on the table with his gaze fixed on my face.

I was confused about where to start my narration from. Do I start with the free shopping treat from Julian or the incident itself?

I resolved that I wasn't capable of telling Adrian about Julian yet, so I went ahead to narrate the incident with the crowd, skillfully excluding Julian's ordeal. When I was done, I remained mute, hoping he would just take my word for it and not bombard me with questions. However, he heaved a loud sigh and muttered.“Julian”.I wasn't sure I heard him well and I couldn't help but ask.“What did you say?”He stood up and mumbled, “Never mind”.He walked past me and headed to his room. I wasn't expecting any reply initially so I shoved it aside and went to my room. I tried so much to take my mind off Adrian's issue with Julian, but the more I tried, the more I became interested. Maybe I would have successfully shoved it aside if Julian didn't drag me into the picture.I curled up on my bed as usual hoping sleep would come knocking because it was just a few hours to midnight. I slept off a few minutes later but jumped off my bed and landed on the floor suddenly. I had a dream about Mom a

The driver quickly alighted and beckoned me to come out of the car, I had to bulge, not as if I had a choice. I walked briskly to Adrian's car accompanied by his bouncers and bodyguards. Why exactly didn't he just ask me to use the other cars in his convoy? The backseat door was opened and I sat inside cautiously. I felt Adrian's gaze on me but I tried to avoid looking back at him.“My home is just a stone's throw from here; I can walk down there”. I muttered.“We are heading to the office; enough of this going home nonsense.” He replied firmly.“You can't do this to me. I really need to visit home, it's very important”. I cried.“Driver, move this car!” Adrian ordered ignoring my pleas.I sank back into the car seat frustrated. Why was he just so difficult? My tear glands were alerted and so on tears began trickling down my face. Adrian kept a straight face all through and refused to have a change of heart.Suddenly, our car pulled up again. Samuel was standing at the door with a medical attendant by his side. The look on his face told me that I was in trouble.“Why the hell are you doing here?” He asked, shouting at the top of his voice.I stood up abruptly and stammered.“I……. I came to see Mom”.“How dare you?” He yelled again, making me take a step backward.I remained mute as usual. I refused to regret my actions and applauded myself for a job well done.“Get out of here, back to where you came from this minute, and don't ever show yourself stupid self till further notice”.I picked up my bag from the floor, tucked my hair behind my ear, and walked out of the room. Sammie and the medical attendant proceeded into the room and started discussing in low tones, I stopped walking abruptly and came back curious to hear what they were saying.I peeped and saw the medical attendant trying to inject the same yellowish substance into Mom's drip bag. I don't know why something inside of me was feeling suspicious about it but I

I hesitated before picking up Adrian's call wondering why he was calling me. Funnily, this is the first time Adrian has called me since we got married.“Hello”. I muttered holding the phone close to my ear.“Jenny, get ready you are joining me here in California. There is an important event I need to attend and you must be present. As a matter of fact, you have the next one hour to be here and your flight is in twenty minutes”.And just like that, he ended the call. I sat there dumbfounded for a few seconds trying to digest what Adrian told me. Then suddenly, the statement “your flight is in 20 minutes” rang in my head, making me snap back to reality.I flew to my room and jumped under the shower; of course, I had to take a quick bath to smell fresh. Afterward, I brought out my traveling bag from the wardrobe; it was pink in color with the perfect girly vibe. I threw a few official clothes in it and added a dinner dress, hoping I would wear it to the event. I packed up other necessary

After much thinking, I decided to attend to my phone first, then the door, and lastly, my headache. When I glanced at the caller and saw Adrian's name I quickly deduced that he was the one at the door. My gaze quickly diverted to the wall clock and my eyes almost popped out of their socket. What! It was past the time for the event.I rushed to the door to open it, but on second thought, I decided to peep through the door hole first. What I saw scared me to my marrow; Adrian was standing outside sweating profusely and banging on the door in anger; some of the hotel workers were with him, trying to calm him down. I took a step backward in fear, I had never seen Adrian so enraged. The only reason I was able to summon up courage and open the door was because of the workers who were with him outside. At least they would protect me if he tried anything funny.I twisted the door knob clockwise and opened the door hiding behind it. Adrian ran in with the workers immediately, looking around fo

When I saw it was Adrian who made the statement I remained mute. I wanted to tell him that I would love to stay more in the hospital and fully recover but I did not see any use of it. I got used to obeying his orders whether pleasant or not. In no time, the discharge documents were ready, and I signed them and strode out of the hospital with Adrian. We rode in the same car but each of us isolated ourselves to our own thoughts. Soon, rain started drizzling. I manipulated the car window and made it leave a little gap through which the rain would shower on my face. The feeling was so soothing and satisfying. The cold evening breeze was another special therapy for me.When we got to the hotel, Adrian fled to his room, but I was not ready to do the same yet. I quickly ran to the receptionist and asked for the kind lady who was at the hospital with me; after much description, the receptionist finally remembered her and gave me the necessary information I needed.**********Immediately Adria

“Marcus I never knew you were this perverted”. Adrian shrugged with chuckles. “Firstly, I don't just feel right about sleeping with her, and I'm sure she doesn't want it, neither do I. Besides, this whole marriage arrangement is solidly based on business. Secondly, I perceive her to be timid, docile, and reserved. I know she thinks of me as a mean person but I don't care. I can't add taking advantage of her vulnerable state to the list of mean things I have done to her. And thirdly, you know I am a feminist so anything related to abuse of females is highly prohibited by me”. He explained.“Bro, you are truly a genius if, indeed, you haven't tasted her,” Marcus said in one breath.“Everyone knows billionaire Adrian is a genius, a super one at that”. Adrian replied with his voice laced with pride.“So, since you are aware that you are mean to her, why do you keep doing it?”. Marcus asked glaring at him keenly.“Well, that question is actually deep”. Adrian replied, looking away.“But yo

I stuttered in reply.“Rubbish! Get ready now.” He roared and turned around to leave but stopped abruptly.“And you, what are you doing here?” Adrian asked, looking at Kira.“I am sorry sir. I will be on my way”. She stammered and hurried out of the room.He turned to glare at me coldly, making me quiver.“Who is she?” He asked intently with his eyes still glued on me. “I have observed her around you more often than proper.”“Is it not obvious? She is a worker in this hotel.” I replied.“What was she doing here because her uniform tells that she is in charge of the hallway and not rooms”. Adrian pressed on.“I think she is the one in the best position to answer

Adrian turned to him, his eyes narrowing slightly, like a curtain pulled against the light."Who are you and what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his voice calm and peaceful, like some stream meandering its way across a tranquil countryside. The words seemed to fall like a question mark, while waiting for an answer. His mask of confidence fluttered; his face slipping open onto a glimpse of uncertainty underneath. "D-dude, I'm so sorry," he stammered, the words skipping from his tongue like a scratched record, hesitant and unsure. "I must have mistaken you for someone else," he finished saying, the sentence trailing off almost at a sigh over the acknowledgment of his mistake.Adrian's eyes, like a drill trying to pierce through steel, pierced into the soul of the man in search of answers. With a dismissive sigh, like a wave that washes over the shore, Adrian turned and walked out of the shop, leaving the man standing alone, like a statue, frozen in time.As Adrian drove back home

There was such a lot of warmth in his voice as he held my hands, sparking electrical currents into my body-like those jolts of adrenaline received on a roller coaster. We gained entrance to the cafeteria, where the savory smell of freshly cooked food filled the air, teasing my taste buds like a savory mist and making me hungry. We sat at a table, and I called out to the waiter; my voice sounded across the room, ringing

Soon thereafter, I whined up the tires on approach to this company's parking lot in protest and brought it to a stop: the screeching just seemed to hang in the air for a moment or two there-a scream of tortured rubber with its shudder, lurch to a stop, and coughing, protesting motor dying out.I breathed deeply, and the tension began to seep from my body like air from a balloon that has been punctured; my shoulders sagged in relief as my heart, though still racing, drummed a slower, more measured beat in my chest. The instant I got out of the car, bright sunlight wrapped itself around me, its warm rays fondling my frayed nerves. A cool breeze ruffled my hair with scents of flowers in bloom and newly cut grass, some sweet fragrance which seemed to soothe the senses, the racing heart."Good morning," the voice of the receptionist greeted happily, a vivid contrast to turmoil that was churning within me, the warm and inviting smile spreading like a sunrise."Good morning, dear," I replied

I couldn't hold myself any longer and burst out laughing. My laughter filled the room, bounced off the walls, and resounded everywhere. Deep, rich, full-bodied, a sound that seemed to emanate right from the core of me.My body was racked with mirth: my shoulders shook, my chest heaved with it, while I stood, my eyes shining with tears, my face alight with the joy of being finally happy-happy as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and a burden from my heart.Smiles danced across my face as I felt unhindered, high, enjoying my victory and revenge. It sounded like the laughter had washed all my cares off me, washed off all the fears, leaving me light and free, high.Just then I turned toward leaving the room; Adrian was stopping me off with words to hang upon for a moment-challenge and more. He told me where I could possibly go, without shame, or remorse, stared enticingly through dilated nostrils. And in that glance, I shivered, I thrilled, feeling a rush down my spine, me

Sweet and tangy, it did a tango on my tongue, the flavor bursting inside my mouth as for one moment it made me forget the tension that was building.I closed my eyes, savoring the taste, and the coolness of the juice as it ran down my throat like balm.Having drunk the juice, I went to the room where Adrian lay asleep-my intentions pure, my heart set on just sleeping well for tomorrow, a day to report to a new job. I lay down on the bed and feigned sleep, my eyes closed, breathing slowly. It was as if the darkness just wrapped itself around me, in a soft, comforting blanket. It wrapped around me, shielding me from the world. I felt my eyelids growing heavy, body relaxing, letting all the weariness of the day wash over me.But it wasn't to last. I felt the touch of Adrian's hand on my lap, the tips of his fingers touching my skin as an electric jolt bolted through my body. Slowly, I started getting ready, undressing and cleaning off the makeup from my face. Tender strokes of the wipe were soothing onto my frazzled nerves as I did everything really slowly.I relished this transformation-taking place, akin to a caterpillar finally making its way out into the world from its cocoon, rebirthed, renewed. I changed into something sexy and hot-a tight gown, fitted at my curves to a T, cuddling me at just about all the right places like into a second skin. And then, looking into the mirror well, I couldn't help but feel this surge of pride in me, a surge of confidence-half a queen surveying her kingdom. My full, round breasts stood to attention, their tender peaks upward like delicate water droplets glistening with a subtle sheen, like the first light of dawn breaking over the horizon. The dress was tight, showcasing every bend and contour of my body, like a work of art on display. I felt like a different person altogether, one ready for the world to bring it on

"It's okay, it's fine," I exclaimed heatedly, though with defeat; the words burst in a gush from my lips in one tumble, with every syllable coated with desperation and despair. I was tired of groveling, tired of reaching out to him, tired of the damn rejection that had worn down my heart through relentless barrage.I sprang up at once, swift, sure movements in every limb; my anger bore me on like a billow against which the shore breaks.I clutched onto the wicker food basket tight, the crackling of wicker in protest as I hoisted it from the table-the only sound heard through the quiet like a shout of defiance. The heavy feel of the basket in my hands was real and reminded me of the work that I had done for our love, so coldly thrown in the trash.I went out from behind the door of his office, my footsteps stumbling on the cold, hard floor; the sound itself appeared to resound inside the silence, an ultimatum, a declaration. The door stood looming over me, a barrier between me and the

"Yeah, we need to talk, Adrian," I said, my voice shaking with emotion; it was a tearful and desperate tone. But Adrian did not even bat an eyelash due to my distress; he sat looking at the screen of his phone. And in that instant, I felt a pang of sadness and a bit of despair, feeling finally that he was lost, his heart hardened against me.I stood there, feeling so vulnerable and exposed, as Adrian walked over to the door, his face still fixed on the screen, a smile playing in the corners of his lips. He locked the door and settled into the chair, his eyes never leaving the phone."What brought you here?" he asked, his voice unemotional, as if he was speaking with a complete stranger. And he added, releasing words like profound cuts in my heart: "And for what reason are you dressing up as a harlot?" His face was stuck to the phone without turning toward me for even one second, so that he might not feel ashamed of looking into my face. The wave of pain and humiliation mounted in my h

I went to the office upbeat, buoyant, my racing heart with anticipation. I could not wait to see the scenario unfold before my eyes-to be able to eventually face Adrian and get my answers. The steps were huge, slow, and sure while I strode into Adrian's office; I felt a mission was well underway-my feet seemed not to feel or touch the floor, impelled by this almost primeval, instinctive propulsion.Upon reaching the door, I was stopped by a soft voice."Excuse me, ma", it said, and turning round, I saw a beautiful woman, fair in complexion, clad in an all-splendid red-some really pretty woman with her curly brown hair, bright smile. She looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and politeness.Who are you, please?" she asked in a soft melodic voice."And who do you look for?" She looked at me directly into my face, her eyes as if probing my brain. I felt the flutter of a bird in my chest, which I managed to still, reminding myself why I was there.I smiled confidently, self-assured."I
