“Hey”. A voice sang after the door was opened.

I raised my head and saw Kira. She walked in dressed in our usual hotel working hours uniform. Before I could say anything to her the door flung open.

“Why are you not dressed yet?” He asked, his voice reverberating in the room.

“I thought we still had about two hours to get there? I stuttered in reply.

“Rubbish! Get ready now.” He roared and turned around to leave but stopped abruptly.

“And you, what are you doing here?” Adrian asked, looking at Kira.

“I am sorry sir. I will be on my way”. She stammered and hurried out of the room.

He turned to glare at me coldly, making me quiver.

“Who is she?” He asked intently with his eyes still glued on me. “I have observed her around you more often than proper.”

“Is it not obvious? She is a worker in this hotel.” I replied.

“What was she doing here because her uniform tells that she is in charge of the hallway and not rooms”. Adrian pressed on.

“I think she is the one in the best position to answer that question”. I replied, looking away.

“I don't know what you are doing but I don't want to see her around you anymore”. He said, his voice laced with authority.

“Noted,” I muttered.

“For crying out loud, you are a fucking wife to a reputable billionaire I will not tolerate you messing around with peasants.”

“Like I said earlier; noted”. I mumbled in reply.

“Very well then, dress up. We ought to be on our way by now.” He said matter of factly.

I nodded, standing up, and trudged to the wardrobe. I removed a white short gown from the wardrobe when I turned around to drop it on the bed. I saw him still in the room.

“I want to dress up.” I shuttered visibly confused.

“Go ahead.” He replied, making a face.

“I can't dress up when you're here,” I said with furrowed brows.

“Are you asking me to leave?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.

I took a step backward trying to wrap my head around what he was aiming at. He just stood there without moving an inch, glaring at me weirdly.

“Billionaire Adrian Sterling, with all due respect, please excuse me. I want to dress up”.

“I'm not going anywhere. I am the only one to give orders here, and you have to follow it, not the other way around. Also, this meeting is very important. I don't want you to ruin it like you did yesterday which landed you in the hospital. I can't take the chances, I'm going to wait for you and when you're done, we will leave at once.”

I inhaled and exhaled. He wasn't trying to do what I was thinking right? I picked up the gown from the bed and headed to the bathroom, I could still feel his curious eyes on me. I opened the door and went in, our eyes met before I closed it behind me. I made sure the door was completely locked before I started taking off my clothes.

I did not fully understand what Adrian was up to, but I knew one thing for sure: he shouldn't exceed his boundaries. I was only married to him for business and that he has upheld from the start. He is very arrogant and I am still trying to cope with that. But he has to respect my privacy.

When I was done wearing the gown, I took a glance at the mirror to admire it. It was perfect on me, I smiled. My shoes and other stuff were in the room and I had to go out to get it. I heaved a deep sigh and opened the door to go out of the bathroom trying as much as possible to avoid Adrian's eyes.

I walked quickly to the drawer and pulled it out grabbing the first pair of shoes my hands reached. I slid my feet into it and it was very comfortable.

“Are those not the shoes you wore back then when we went for an interview?” Adrian asked suddenly.

“Yes, they are”. I muttered wondering why he asked.

“So you want to repeat those same shoes to a very important event with me?” He asked at the top of his voice.

“I'm sorry, I forgot.” I groaned, returning the shoes.

Honestly, I was going to freak out. Dressing up was one of my best moments, but with Adrian there, it was so boring. I brought out a pair of red heels which I had never worn before. After doing my hair and applying a little makeup, I turned around and muttered.

“I am done.”

He stepped aside making way for me to pass. When we got to the receptionist's table, he asked for a checkout.

“What! Are we going back to America?” I asked.

He nodded absentmindedly in reply.

“Better”. I murmured. I mean, it's been hell since we came to California, so I think it's better we just went home. But did he have to lie about it all this while? Our ride came and when we got into the car, the driver wasn't taking the route to the airport.

“Driver, I think you are going the wrong way. I said sitting up.

“No, ma'am, this is the destination I was given”. He said, showing me his phone screen.

I turned around and looked at Adrian confused.

“Stop looking at me like that”. He said, looking away.

“You said we were going back to America,” I mumbled.

“Well now you know we are not”.

I leaned back on the car seat and heaved a sigh. I could feel Adrian stealing glances at me. I pretended to ignore him and turned around to look through the window. Maybe I didn't want to leave California after all; I mean, anywhere outside Adrian's sick mansion was a big yes for me.

We arrived at the meeting venue after a 30-minute freaking ride. I literally dozed the whole time. When I stepped out of the car, I couldn't help but gasp for breath. Just like other people did when they arrived Adrian stopped me from going out. He turned around and opened the door for me offering me his hand to stand up. I gave him the most confused look of my life, and he winked in reply. I knew I had to play along.

Cameras were shuttering here and there, and flashlights kept interrupting my sight. I looked up to Adrian and he wore the most intentional look I had ever seen. We were walking into the meeting hall, hands intertwined like couples walking up the aisle. I felt really nervous plus the crowd from the press and the media around us. They kept stretching their sick microphones to our mouths and asking dumb questions.“Billionaire Adrian, since you got married, you have kept your wife off social media. Could you tell us why?” Another almost poked the cell phone in my mouth “Mrs Jenny Sterling, could you kindly tell us how your marriage experience with Billionaire Adrian is?” The next question was the dumbest question I had ever heard: “Miss Jenny Sterling, rumor has it that billionaire Adrian is good in bed; how true is this?” I almost freaked out. The security men were doing their job but it wasn't enough.“What are you doing?” Adrian whispered at the corner of his lips.“Nothing”. I blurre

He whispered with gnashed teeth.“You are unbelievable,” I whispered and regretted it immediately because he heard me.“What did you say?” He leaned in again and asked with furrowed brows.“Oh, nothing.” I stammered in reply.“Good.” He muttered and leaned forward to join the meeting again.I heaved a deep sigh, picked up the cutlery, and took a piece of the snack. It had gone cold by then and had lost that hot, crunchy vibe. I continued munching on it and used the wine served along with it to take it down. When I was done with the snack, I sank back into my chair with a filled stomach. After a few minutes of sitting mutely beside Adrian, I observed the meeting room begin to resurrect because it was getting interactive. People were giving their opinions and points of view on different issues and topics. Soon, the menial side talks graduated to heated discussions and blunt exchanges. The board did not withhold anything, pou

The meeting finally came to a wrap. I almost jumped out of my chair in excitement. When I stood up, my limbs went numb for a few seconds and I had to hold on to the table and Adrian's left hand for support. He glared at me, confused, and yanked my hand off. I gulped hard and picked up my bag waiting for him to finish exchanging pleasantries with the board members so we could go home.Out of the blue, the ladies who snubbed me from the commencement of the meeting gathered around me and raised their phone cameras in the air. Selfies were shuttering here and there and I was just trying to make sense of what was going on. Soon, they were making short videos. Some were going live on Instagram, TikTok, and X, saying things like, “Guys, guess who showed up today? Billionaire Adrian's queen and you all know I don't have time for dull moments; we are connecting with her right away.”Maybe I would have had any problem with the whole thing if they were doing it decently and coded but we're just

We stayed in the elevator for about an hour before the lights were finally restored. The elevator started working again, and in no time, we got to our rooms. I thought to ask Adrian about my luggage again, but before I could do so, he disappeared into his room and locked the door. I quietly opened my room door and went inside, when I turned on the lights I saw all my luggage right in front of me.“He really meant it”. I murmured aloud. My hurting back and my swollen feet told me I was not going to unpack anything at that moment. All I needed was a quick shower to loosen up and a good night's sleep. I wished I could get a massage, but it was too let to go to the spa in the hotel as the attendants don't work all around the clock.I woke up the next morning expecting to feel better but I turned out worse than the previous night. My feet, instead of reducing, got more swollen, and my back was a total mess; I couldn't even sit well.“Why the hell am I like this”. I cried making a face.I d

“Do not mess with me.” He murmured, “I know you do not owe me any commitment in this marriage, and so do I, but flirting with fools will do nothing but soil my reputation, and I will not let that happen. Is that understood?”.I nodded abruptly hoping he would just release me because my jawline was hurting. He dropped my face and left the room. Now he is accusing me falsely, I was never flirting. I pulled myself upwards and covered up with the duvet.“Okay, Jenny. In situations like this, all you have to do is to sleep away your worries.” I murmured to myself and shut my eyes.*************“Bro, you're not serious, are you? Marcus asked, amidst laughter.“What's funny?”. Adrian asked, getting pissed off.“Why should you be angry because another man was touching her?” Marcus asked with his hands in the air.“She's my wife for crying out loud, does that ring a bell?” Adrian replied, tilting his face forward.“But you also said emphatically that she does not mean anything to you. I tried so hard to stop myself from smiling but it failed. He glared at me and scoffed.“But we still have unfinished business here and you must take care of it before we leave,” Adrian added, making my brows furrow slightly.“Okay, I think I get the unfinished business part, but your pronouns are confusing. What do you mean by” you” must take care of it? I asked with uneasiness written all over me.“Blockhead. It simply means that you will be the performer at this particular event”. He replied with a mischievous look.“Wait. You are joking right?” I stuttered, blinking nervously.“I don't joke Jenny”. I braced myself to accept my fate.“This is not making any headway, what am I even supposed to talk about?” I murmured. The fact that I don't even know the person I am up against is what baffles me. Also, I have no idea about public speaking, and this whole thing looks so void to me.I racked every nook and cranny in my brain for a clue of where to start. The event hall was mind-blowing, a haven that spoke luxury and class. Above everyone were the sparkling chandeliers like stars. Its bright light shone over the crowd of elegance and style. A glance at the accurate arrangement of the flickering candles, the orderly ornaments positioned on top of round tables with neat shiny covers, and the sweet melodies that filled the air were all evidence of a perfect detail well planned. The fresh scents of roses that filled the air, plus the expensive deodorants, gave a lasting impression to our breaths. My glare roamed to the podium situated ahead of me, it wasn't left out in the luxurious decorations and lighting. It looks like standing on it would take you to a different dimension. The sight of the erect microphone sent cold shivers down my spine and it refreshed my memory of the previous day. Sweat buds began to gather on my forehead despite the numerous air conditioners and proper ventilation in the hall. My hands grabbed my purse tightly as

Adrian turned to him, his eyes narrowing slightly, like a curtain pulled against the light."Who are you and what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his voice calm and peaceful, like some stream meandering its way across a tranquil countryside. The words seemed to fall like a question mark, while waiting for an answer. His mask of confidence fluttered; his face slipping open onto a glimpse of uncertainty underneath. "D-dude, I'm so sorry," he stammered, the words skipping from his tongue like a scratched record, hesitant and unsure. "I must have mistaken you for someone else," he finished saying, the sentence trailing off almost at a sigh over the acknowledgment of his mistake.Adrian's eyes, like a drill trying to pierce through steel, pierced into the soul of the man in search of answers. With a dismissive sigh, like a wave that washes over the shore, Adrian turned and walked out of the shop, leaving the man standing alone, like a statue, frozen in time.As Adrian drove back home

We then got into his car, with the sleek and black vehicle glowing in the bright sunlight, softly upholstered, inviting leather, like a cozy cocoon. As we started driving to the cafeteria, it was a pleasant feeling with wind whistling through my hair, a song of joy, a sense of abandon, something like a caged bird free at last to soar into an open sky with wings of pure exhilaration. We took snapshots inside the car; our laughs, our smiles froze in those momentary flickers of time, like amber-preserving memories."Let's go and eat, please, I'm famished," Mr. German said. There was such a lot of warmth in his voice as he held my hands, sparking electrical currents into my body-like those jolts of adrenaline received on a roller coaster. We gained entrance to the cafeteria, where the savory smell of freshly cooked food filled the air, teasing my taste buds like a savory mist and making me hungry. We sat at a table, and I called out to the waiter; my voice sounded across the room, ringing

Soon thereafter, I whined up the tires on approach to this company's parking lot in protest and brought it to a stop: the screeching just seemed to hang in the air for a moment or two there-a scream of tortured rubber with its shudder, lurch to a stop, and coughing, protesting motor dying out.I breathed deeply, and the tension began to seep from my body like air from a balloon that has been punctured; my shoulders sagged in relief as my heart, though still racing, drummed a slower, more measured beat in my chest. The instant I got out of the car, bright sunlight wrapped itself around me, its warm rays fondling my frayed nerves. A cool breeze ruffled my hair with scents of flowers in bloom and newly cut grass, some sweet fragrance which seemed to soothe the senses, the racing heart."Good morning," the voice of the receptionist greeted happily, a vivid contrast to turmoil that was churning within me, the warm and inviting smile spreading like a sunrise."Good morning, dear," I replied

I couldn't hold myself any longer and burst out laughing. My laughter filled the room, bounced off the walls, and resounded everywhere. Deep, rich, full-bodied, a sound that seemed to emanate right from the core of me.My body was racked with mirth: my shoulders shook, my chest heaved with it, while I stood, my eyes shining with tears, my face alight with the joy of being finally happy-happy as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and a burden from my heart.Smiles danced across my face as I felt unhindered, high, enjoying my victory and revenge. It sounded like the laughter had washed all my cares off me, washed off all the fears, leaving me light and free, high.Just then I turned toward leaving the room; Adrian was stopping me off with words to hang upon for a moment-challenge and more. He told me where I could possibly go, without shame, or remorse, stared enticingly through dilated nostrils. And in that glance, I shivered, I thrilled, feeling a rush down my spine, me

Sweet and tangy, it did a tango on my tongue, the flavor bursting inside my mouth as for one moment it made me forget the tension that was building.I closed my eyes, savoring the taste, and the coolness of the juice as it ran down my throat like balm.Having drunk the juice, I went to the room where Adrian lay asleep-my intentions pure, my heart set on just sleeping well for tomorrow, a day to report to a new job. I lay down on the bed and feigned sleep, my eyes closed, breathing slowly. It was as if the darkness just wrapped itself around me, in a soft, comforting blanket. It wrapped around me, shielding me from the world. I felt my eyelids growing heavy, body relaxing, letting all the weariness of the day wash over me.But it wasn't to last. I felt the touch of Adrian's hand on my lap, the tips of his fingers touching my skin as an electric jolt bolted through my body. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up in a fluster, my voice ringing out loud."Stop it, please!" I screamed at him,

Slowly, I started getting ready, undressing and cleaning off the makeup from my face. Tender strokes of the wipe were soothing onto my frazzled nerves as I did everything really slowly.I relished this transformation-taking place, akin to a caterpillar finally making its way out into the world from its cocoon, rebirthed, renewed. I changed into something sexy and hot-a tight gown, fitted at my curves to a T, cuddling me at just about all the right places like into a second skin. And then, looking into the mirror well, I couldn't help but feel this surge of pride in me, a surge of confidence-half a queen surveying her kingdom. My full, round breasts stood to attention, their tender peaks upward like delicate water droplets glistening with a subtle sheen, like the first light of dawn breaking over the horizon. The dress was tight, showcasing every bend and contour of my body, like a work of art on display. I felt like a different person altogether, one ready for the world to bring it on

"It's okay, it's fine," I exclaimed heatedly, though with defeat; the words burst in a gush from my lips in one tumble, with every syllable coated with desperation and despair. I was tired of groveling, tired of reaching out to him, tired of the damn rejection that had worn down my heart through relentless barrage.I sprang up at once, swift, sure movements in every limb; my anger bore me on like a billow against which the shore breaks.I clutched onto the wicker food basket tight, the crackling of wicker in protest as I hoisted it from the table-the only sound heard through the quiet like a shout of defiance. The heavy feel of the basket in my hands was real and reminded me of the work that I had done for our love, so coldly thrown in the trash.I went out from behind the door of his office, my footsteps stumbling on the cold, hard floor; the sound itself appeared to resound inside the silence, an ultimatum, a declaration. The door stood looming over me, a barrier between me and the

"Yeah, we need to talk, Adrian," I said, my voice shaking with emotion; it was a tearful and desperate tone. But Adrian did not even bat an eyelash due to my distress; he sat looking at the screen of his phone. And in that instant, I felt a pang of sadness and a bit of despair, feeling finally that he was lost, his heart hardened against me.I stood there, feeling so vulnerable and exposed, as Adrian walked over to the door, his face still fixed on the screen, a smile playing in the corners of his lips. He locked the door and settled into the chair, his eyes never leaving the phone."What brought you here?" he asked, his voice unemotional, as if he was speaking with a complete stranger. And he added, releasing words like profound cuts in my heart: "And for what reason are you dressing up as a harlot?" His face was stuck to the phone without turning toward me for even one second, so that he might not feel ashamed of looking into my face. The wave of pain and humiliation mounted in my h

I went to the office upbeat, buoyant, my racing heart with anticipation. I could not wait to see the scenario unfold before my eyes-to be able to eventually face Adrian and get my answers. The steps were huge, slow, and sure while I strode into Adrian's office; I felt a mission was well underway-my feet seemed not to feel or touch the floor, impelled by this almost primeval, instinctive propulsion.Upon reaching the door, I was stopped by a soft voice."Excuse me, ma", it said, and turning round, I saw a beautiful woman, fair in complexion, clad in an all-splendid red-some really pretty woman with her curly brown hair, bright smile. She looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and politeness.Who are you, please?" she asked in a soft melodic voice."And who do you look for?" She looked at me directly into my face, her eyes as if probing my brain. I felt the flutter of a bird in my chest, which I managed to still, reminding myself why I was there.I smiled confidently, self-assured."I
