A knock on the door dragged me back to reality.

“Good morning,” I murmured when I opened the door to see Adrian standing with his hands folded across his chest.

“We will be going back to America tomorrow.” He muttered. I tried so hard to stop myself from smiling but it failed. He glared at me and scoffed.

“But we still have unfinished business here and you must take care of it before we leave,” Adrian added, making my brows furrow slightly.

“Okay, I think I get the unfinished business part, but your pronouns are confusing. What do you mean by” you” must take care of it?  I asked with uneasiness written all over me.

“Blockhead. It simply means that you will be the performer at this particular event”. He replied with a mischievous look.

“Wait. You are joking right?” I stuttered, blinking nervously.

“I don't joke Jenny”. He replied firmly.

His words hit me directly and penetrated my soul spontaneously leaving me breathless.

“I should perform in your place?” I blinked at him with my jaw slightly dropped. He maintained his cold, mischievous glare, sending cold shivers down my spine.

I battled to digest the weight of what he just said but it was far-fetched. My heart was pounding hard against my chest as the cold hands of fear began to grip me firmly. I had a strong conviction that what he was doing had nothing to do with trust and motivation. It was just one of his heartless games; a medium he was putting me to watch me fumble.

My hands quivered faintly and curled up into fists clenched by my sides, my voice was buried deep down in my stomach, and my teeth gnashing slightly. It was indeed a stunning and overwhelming surprise. I mean, I never saw this coming, but the sting of cruelty overshadowed it immediately. What would he profit from this? And what do I stand to lose?

“But why would you want me to handle it if it is that important?” I asked with a wave of fear in my voice.

“Follow me I will explain to you”. He mumbled and turned around to leave.

I allowed him to take the lead while I followed behind. My heart was already racing and goosebumps had covered my whole body. He got to his room and opened the door; we walked in and got situated before he finally spoke up.

“The family hosting this event is one of the most reputable in the world. Mind you I didn't say America but in the entire world. It's the Jerkins family. He has this behavior of boasting about his wife's charismatic prowess which always pisses me off. This is the reason you will go there and speak in such a way that everyone will know that she isn't the only fish in the ocean.”

“What! You want me to compete with her or something?” I asked in disbelief.

“Call it whatever you deem fit all I know is that you will put that empty barrel where she belongs”. He replied matter of factly.

“No! I can't do this.” I replied, my voice breaking.

“And why?” He asked, his eyes widened.

“I don't want to become an object of ridicule and mockery when I falter. I am not really good at public speaking, unlike you, so I can't do it. If you are hell-bent on proving a point, then I think you should do it yourself”. I stated my voice laced with boldness. I had no idea where it came from.

“You don't get it, do you? She is a fucking woman. Doing this wouldn't stir amazement because everyone knows as a man, I am superior. I may only end up reducing my steeze instead of putting the Jerkins where they belong.” He explained.

I bowed my head in frustration. Looking into his cold, unyielding eyes, I knew there was no need to argue. Resistance would do nothing but energize his cruel passion and refusal would result in punishments I am not prepared for.

My mouth began to turn bitter as I forced my neck to produce a nod, the enormity of surrendering weighing me down. Inside me, I hated how he always had his way, how with ease he rips me of my willpower, leaving me with no choice.

But there was a spark of resolution hidden behind the fear that overwhelmed me, a quiet pledge to endure no matter how humiliating or ridiculous this ordeal would be.

I gulped hard and spoke the words he yearned to hear, my voice feigning courage.

“Okay then, I will do it.” But deep down my heart, my answer was the opposite.

He sank back into the couch, a small fulfilled smirk playing at the corner of his lips as he watched me reluctantly surrender to his bidding. This was the exact way he planned it; witnessing my battle with my feelings of nervosity, fear, and unwilling agreement awarded him with a sensation of victory that was quite obvious.

It was not only about me accepting to do; it was his ability to twist me to do his will, the domination over me, and the authority he had over me. I was his tool to use as he seemed fit, his possession for display, and this stage of unfairness was suitable for me.

He finally broke the silence with a scornful tone.

“Of course, you will do it; I mean, you don't have a choice. Besides, I was not even asking for your consent; I was only informing you on the latest developments.”

I swallowed it bitterly and pulled myself to a standing position. Glancing at him I got him beaming with smiles of satisfaction. He took it as a triumph, a heads up that he was always the superior no matter what. And maybe that was how it was meant to be.

I strode out of the room with cautious steps because I feared I could trip since I felt like I was walking on air.

I got back to my room and collapsed on the floor, tears clouding my eyes in a few seconds. No. This was not the time for emotional dramas. The event is tomorrow and a bit of rehearsals would be wise.I sat on my bed with my two legs knitted together tucking my hair behind my ears. I braced myself to accept my fate.“This is not making any headway, what am I even supposed to talk about?” I murmured. The fact that I don't even know the person I am up against is what baffles me. Also, I have no idea about public speaking, and this whole thing looks so void to me.I racked every nook and cranny in my brain for a clue of where to start. After much wrestling, nature came calling, and I gradually submitted to the warm hands of sleep. The next morning came, but I was still cuddling my pillow, oblivious of my plight, until a cold knock on the door snapped me back to reality.“Oh my God it is morning already. The event hall was mind-blowing, a haven that spoke luxury and class. Above everyone were the sparkling chandeliers like stars. Its bright light shone over the crowd of elegance and style. A glance at the accurate arrangement of the flickering candles, the orderly ornaments positioned on top of round tables with neat shiny covers, and the sweet melodies that filled the air were all evidence of a perfect detail well planned. The fresh scents of roses that filled the air, plus the expensive deodorants, gave a lasting impression to our breaths. My glare roamed to the podium situated ahead of me, it wasn't left out in the luxurious decorations and lighting. It looks like standing on it would take you to a different dimension. The sight of the erect microphone sent cold shivers down my spine and it refreshed my memory of the previous day. Sweat buds began to gather on my forehead despite the numerous air conditioners and proper ventilation in the hall. My hands grabbed my purse tightly as

The shackles of fear that gripped my being began to break loose. My voice, which started out trembling and shaky, found its rhythm along the line. The words that were skillfully captured from the speech made earlier by the Jerkins came fresh, but it didn't sound copied; it was as real as realness itself. I spoke genuinely from within, crafting my thoughts and knowledge with preciseness and passion, and to my surprise, I could feel my listeners resonating with me.Their once numb expressions drifted off to sincere interest and engagement as their genuine nods transformed into sitting up and with utmost concentration. A warm hush descended over the hall as words departed from my mouth. My voice is smooth and courageous now, accompanied by the weight and authenticity that was absent in the speech made by my rival, or, should I say, Adrian's rival. I could see the spark in their souls, the surge of depth in their silence, everything just pushed me and gave me a reason to keep going.By th

Our journey back to America was a smooth one. It was quite chilly that morning as we were slowly approaching the winter season. I woke up shivering from the cold, and even after bathing in warm water, it didn't change anything. I knew I was going to freeze because I didn't bring sweaters, coats, or any winter suit with me. I had to improvise by wearing three shirts at a time but I hope no one noticed.Stepping out of the room with my traveling bag by my side I stood by the door and took a final glance at the room. I was surely going to miss it because it had somehow become a part of my life during my few day's stay in California. There was not much difference between the hotel room and my room in Adrian's house in America.I ran my eyes from the cozy bed to the marble floor and the smooth walls. I took a deep breath savoring the soothing scent of the air fresheners and flowers for the last time. Maybe not the last but I never could tell.I shut the door slowly wishing whoever was the

Once seated inside, I feigned a stiff face, trying to avoid Adrian's inquisitive eyes. I knew he was going to ask about it, so why save him the stress by telling him voluntarily? The car was soon in motion, increasing its speed gradually. I could still feel his fiery gaze fixed on me; it soon became overwhelming.I tried ignoring him, trying to divert my attention, and thought to focus on something more demanding, what Kira had just told me at the hotel a couple of minutes ago. But just when I was about to dive into my thinking realm Adrian spoke up, his voice snapping out of it all.“Do I need to ask you what you were doing with that lady before you tell me?”I didn't say a word, not even a strand of hair on my body moved in response to his question. I had to buy myself some time to figure out what I was going to tell him because of course, I never had the intention of telling him the truth.“Am I talking to a stick?” He roared again this time with a wave of annoyance in his voice.“

“Don't pick up the call”. My subconscious mind whispered. Is that going to work? Ignoring Samuel's calls is an indirect way of fueling his anger and I am not ready to incur his wrath. I didn't also want to give him the impression that I knew what he wanted to say and I was guilty of it. Adrian was still wearing the same creepy face. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that he had a hand in this; his expression told it all. Now, it dawned on me what he meant when he said, “We will see about that.” Is that how badly he wanted to hear what transpired between me and Kira? He had to involve Samuel.I bit my lower lips lightly as a wave of regret washed through me. I knew telling him to his face that I didn't want to tell him about it was a bad idea. Maybe I would have just lied or fabricated some stories to satisfy his curiosity. Now Samuel was in the picture, making it more complicated.I felt a familiar sense of homeliness then I realized our jet was slowly reaching the ground. I had

He was looking in my direction while Adrian was just staring into the space. He gestured to me to come back and I started walking briskly. Each step made me hate what I was doing more. When I was a few inches away from them, I stopped abruptly hoping he would just say whatever he wanted to say and get it done with.“Huh, why are you standing there? You can come forward; I don't bite”. He said his voice loud and resounding.I cursed him under my breath and surged a few more steps forward. When I got to where he stood, he opened his arms for a hug, but I turned it down by extending my right hand for a handshake. Adrian chuckled at what I did and I guess Marcus was ashamed.“Good day, Jenny; how was your trip?” He asked with a weird smile.“Fine,” I muttered.“Ohh forgive my manners. I am Marcus Lopez Adrian's best friend.” He

The idea started coming alive slowly. I made a gloomy stormy ocean under an overhead sky. I inserted rigid rocks in the distance one that the waves would hit in fury. My fingers went faster as I blended the colors to smoothen the sides; my mind was totally immersed in the process. As I painted, the wall clock behind me seemed to be ticking faster than usual. The house was still, and the only sound was the one my brush was making as it worked on the canvas.I remembered to stop only when my waist ached slightly; I had sat for too long. My hands were both in paint. I dropped the brush and stood up taking a step backward. I stared at my work. I didn't show much expertise or perfection. Some parts were not well blended, and others were inaccurate, but it depicted me at that moment. It detailed how I felt; uneasiness and unsure but full of hope that needed a boost.A small smile appeared on my lips as I wiped my brushes free from the paint. Adrian turned to him, his eyes narrowing slightly, like a curtain pulled against the light."Who are you and what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his voice calm and peaceful, like some stream meandering its way across a tranquil countryside. The words seemed to fall like a question mark, while waiting for an answer. His mask of confidence fluttered; his face slipping open onto a glimpse of uncertainty underneath. "D-dude, I'm so sorry," he stammered, the words skipping from his tongue like a scratched record, hesitant and unsure. "I must have mistaken you for someone else," he finished saying, the sentence trailing off almost at a sigh over the acknowledgment of his mistake.Adrian's eyes, like a drill trying to pierce through steel, pierced into the soul of the man in search of answers. With a dismissive sigh, like a wave that washes over the shore, Adrian turned and walked out of the shop, leaving the man standing alone, like a statue, frozen in time.As Adrian drove back home

There was such a lot of warmth in his voice as he held my hands, sparking electrical currents into my body-like those jolts of adrenaline received on a roller coaster. We gained entrance to the cafeteria, where the savory smell of freshly cooked food filled the air, teasing my taste buds like a savory mist and making me hungry. We sat at a table, and I called out to the waiter; my voice sounded across the room, ringing

Soon thereafter, I whined up the tires on approach to this company's parking lot in protest and brought it to a stop: the screeching just seemed to hang in the air for a moment or two there-a scream of tortured rubber with its shudder, lurch to a stop, and coughing, protesting motor dying out.I breathed deeply, and the tension began to seep from my body like air from a balloon that has been punctured; my shoulders sagged in relief as my heart, though still racing, drummed a slower, more measured beat in my chest. The instant I got out of the car, bright sunlight wrapped itself around me, its warm rays fondling my frayed nerves. A cool breeze ruffled my hair with scents of flowers in bloom and newly cut grass, some sweet fragrance which seemed to soothe the senses, the racing heart."Good morning," the voice of the receptionist greeted happily, a vivid contrast to turmoil that was churning within me, the warm and inviting smile spreading like a sunrise."Good morning, dear," I replied

I couldn't hold myself any longer and burst out laughing. My laughter filled the room, bounced off the walls, and resounded everywhere. Deep, rich, full-bodied, a sound that seemed to emanate right from the core of me.My body was racked with mirth: my shoulders shook, my chest heaved with it, while I stood, my eyes shining with tears, my face alight with the joy of being finally happy-happy as though a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and a burden from my heart.Smiles danced across my face as I felt unhindered, high, enjoying my victory and revenge. It sounded like the laughter had washed all my cares off me, washed off all the fears, leaving me light and free, high.Just then I turned toward leaving the room; Adrian was stopping me off with words to hang upon for a moment-challenge and more. He told me where I could possibly go, without shame, or remorse, stared enticingly through dilated nostrils. And in that glance, I shivered, I thrilled, feeling a rush down my spine, me

Sweet and tangy, it did a tango on my tongue, the flavor bursting inside my mouth as for one moment it made me forget the tension that was building.I closed my eyes, savoring the taste, and the coolness of the juice as it ran down my throat like balm.Having drunk the juice, I went to the room where Adrian lay asleep-my intentions pure, my heart set on just sleeping well for tomorrow, a day to report to a new job. I lay down on the bed and feigned sleep, my eyes closed, breathing slowly. It was as if the darkness just wrapped itself around me, in a soft, comforting blanket. It wrapped around me, shielding me from the world. I felt my eyelids growing heavy, body relaxing, letting all the weariness of the day wash over me.But it wasn't to last. I felt the touch of Adrian's hand on my lap, the tips of his fingers touching my skin as an electric jolt bolted through my body. My eyes snapped open, and I sat up in a fluster, my voice ringing out loud."Stop it, please!" I screamed at him,

Slowly, I started getting ready, undressing and cleaning off the makeup from my face. Tender strokes of the wipe were soothing onto my frazzled nerves as I did everything really slowly.I relished this transformation-taking place, akin to a caterpillar finally making its way out into the world from its cocoon, rebirthed, renewed. I changed into something sexy and hot-a tight gown, fitted at my curves to a T, cuddling me at just about all the right places like into a second skin. And then, looking into the mirror well, I couldn't help but feel this surge of pride in me, a surge of confidence-half a queen surveying her kingdom. My full, round breasts stood to attention, their tender peaks upward like delicate water droplets glistening with a subtle sheen, like the first light of dawn breaking over the horizon. The dress was tight, showcasing every bend and contour of my body, like a work of art on display. I felt like a different person altogether, one ready for the world to bring it on

"It's okay, it's fine," I exclaimed heatedly, though with defeat; the words burst in a gush from my lips in one tumble, with every syllable coated with desperation and despair. I was tired of groveling, tired of reaching out to him, tired of the damn rejection that had worn down my heart through relentless barrage.I sprang up at once, swift, sure movements in every limb; my anger bore me on like a billow against which the shore breaks.I clutched onto the wicker food basket tight, the crackling of wicker in protest as I hoisted it from the table-the only sound heard through the quiet like a shout of defiance. The heavy feel of the basket in my hands was real and reminded me of the work that I had done for our love, so coldly thrown in the trash.I went out from behind the door of his office, my footsteps stumbling on the cold, hard floor; the sound itself appeared to resound inside the silence, an ultimatum, a declaration. The door stood looming over me, a barrier between me and the

"Yeah, we need to talk, Adrian," I said, my voice shaking with emotion; it was a tearful and desperate tone. But Adrian did not even bat an eyelash due to my distress; he sat looking at the screen of his phone. And in that instant, I felt a pang of sadness and a bit of despair, feeling finally that he was lost, his heart hardened against me.I stood there, feeling so vulnerable and exposed, as Adrian walked over to the door, his face still fixed on the screen, a smile playing in the corners of his lips. He locked the door and settled into the chair, his eyes never leaving the phone."What brought you here?" he asked, his voice unemotional, as if he was speaking with a complete stranger. And he added, releasing words like profound cuts in my heart: "And for what reason are you dressing up as a harlot?" His face was stuck to the phone without turning toward me for even one second, so that he might not feel ashamed of looking into my face. The wave of pain and humiliation mounted in my h

I went to the office upbeat, buoyant, my racing heart with anticipation. I could not wait to see the scenario unfold before my eyes-to be able to eventually face Adrian and get my answers. The steps were huge, slow, and sure while I strode into Adrian's office; I felt a mission was well underway-my feet seemed not to feel or touch the floor, impelled by this almost primeval, instinctive propulsion.Upon reaching the door, I was stopped by a soft voice."Excuse me, ma", it said, and turning round, I saw a beautiful woman, fair in complexion, clad in an all-splendid red-some really pretty woman with her curly brown hair, bright smile. She looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and politeness.Who are you, please?" she asked in a soft melodic voice."And who do you look for?" She looked at me directly into my face, her eyes as if probing my brain. I felt the flutter of a bird in my chest, which I managed to still, reminding myself why I was there.I smiled confidently, self-assured."I
