The event hall was mind-blowing, a haven that spoke luxury and class. Above everyone were the sparkling chandeliers like stars. Its bright light shone over the crowd of elegance and style. A glance at the accurate arrangement of the flickering candles, the orderly ornaments positioned on top of round tables with neat shiny covers, and the sweet melodies that filled the air were all evidence of a perfect detail well planned.
The fresh scents of roses that filled the air, plus the expensive deodorants, gave a lasting impression to our breaths.
My glare roamed to the podium situated ahead of me, it wasn't left out in the luxurious decorations and lighting. It looks like standing on it would take you to a different dimension. The sight of the erect microphone sent cold shivers down my spine and it refreshed my memory of the previous day. Sweat buds began to gather on my forehead despite the numerous air conditioners and proper ventilation in the hall. My hands grabbed my purse tightly as if my life depended on it.
The other attendees walked around freely with loud chatter and soft laughter as they familiarized themselves and exchanged pleasantries, oblivious to the trauma I was going through. Their confidence was on the high side, making me feel like an outcast among them.
By my side was Adrian, calmly sitting with his eyes glued to his phone screen. He cared less about what was happening around him because he was used to the environment. My eyes were still fixed on him when he lifted his face abruptly, and we made eye contact. I looked away instantly afraid to behold the loom that filled his eyes, a quiet reminder of the performance I couldn't run away from.
The noise in the background slowly vanished as the host took the microphone and drew the hall's attention to himself without much effort. After an opening remark from him, as expected he called on his wife to address the audience.
“I deeply appreciate you all for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend this insightful seminar hosted by the Jerkins family. As we all know the host speaker will take the stage first to dish out value to you before any voluntary contribution. With that being said, with a thunderous round of applause let's welcome my wife, the face of the Jerkins family, to the podium”.
She was a young, vibrant-looking lady gleaming with pride and confidence. As she ascended the little stage stairs, the crowd cheers from the crowd increased until she took the microphone and signaled for silence.
Her voice was steady and intriguing with the adequate ingredients to command a perfect speech. The atmosphere began to gain more weight as she continued to play with words with an air of certainty. Her tone was polished and efficiently calculated. Her presentation was good, too good it was clear that she practiced and rehearsed a thousand times in front of a mirror. She spoke with flair, overly gesturing and giving smiles while punctuating her sentences. The audience was cooperative to some extent giving out nods when warranted but with a lukewarm spirit too subdued to be sincere. A polite applause was released when she concluded it was too casual without genuine enthusiasm.
The host climbed the stage the second time unnecessarily stressing the already made presentation by his wife.
“Another round of applause for the face of the Jerkins family. That was a fantastic and excellent performance just as expected”. He shouted beaming with smiles. “You can agree with me that no one does it as she does.”
Afterward, he called on Adrian to take the microphone. He looked back at me and beckoned me to go for it.
“Why are you still sitting here? It's time.” He mumbled.
I tried so much to take a deep breath, maybe that would calm my nerves but my lungs only got tightened with every trial, refusing me to exhale.
“Please don't let me do this,” I muttered, my voice shaking.
“Jenny, don't make this harder than it is. Just get up and do the needful.” He replied with a stern voice.
I grew nervous as seconds passed away. Grabbing my dress, I froze for a while, my throat running dry. I gulped hard, trying hard not to choke because the air felt too heavy, leaving me grasping for boldness. I gave Adrian another glance. Maybe he could change his mind at the dying minute, or just maybe a miracle would happen, but his face was as prompt as ever, screaming anticipation. There was no way out now. The time I despise was here.
I walked to the podium with trembling legs every step making me feel like I was going to collapse. As I positioned myself behind the microphone the spotlight seemed too blinding. The shuttering and light flashing from the cameras that the world was going to know whatever the outcome may be. I grabbed the edges of the microphone for support, and for some seconds, I felt like I could disappear from the eyes glued on me, awaiting my failure and shame.
The host walked briskly towards me to address the audience again, his voice laced with envy and resentment.
“Okay, I think there is a switch here. Mr Adrian would rather prefer his wife, his queen, to speak on his behalf just like mine did.”
“Queen indeed,” I whispered in fury.
“Do you think you can do this ma'am?” He asked his tone carrying mockery.
I maintained a steady face and took the microphone from him without satisfying him with the reply he needed. It is said that the best answer for a fool is silence. He walked away quietly leaving me alone to fight my battle. I heaved a deep sigh and tried my best to summon up all the courage in the world within my reach.
Out of the blue, as I opened my mouth in an attempt to speak, something unexpected happened.
The shackles of fear that gripped my being began to break loose. My voice, which started out trembling and shaky, found its rhythm along the line. The words that were skillfully captured from the speech made earlier by the Jerkins came fresh, but it didn't sound copied; it was as real as realness itself. I spoke genuinely from within, crafting my thoughts and knowledge with preciseness and passion, and to my surprise, I could feel my listeners resonating with me.Their once numb expressions drifted off to sincere interest and engagement as their genuine nods transformed into sitting up and with utmost concentration. A warm hush descended over the hall as words departed from my mouth. My voice is smooth and courageous now, accompanied by the weight and authenticity that was absent in the speech made by my rival, or, should I say, Adrian's rival. I could see the spark in their souls, the surge of depth in their silence, everything just pushed me and gave me a reason to keep going.By th
Our journey back to America was a smooth one. It was quite chilly that morning as we were slowly approaching the winter season. I woke up shivering from the cold, and even after bathing in warm water, it didn't change anything. I knew I was going to freeze because I didn't bring sweaters, coats, or any winter suit with me. I had to improvise by wearing three shirts at a time but I hope no one noticed.Stepping out of the room with my traveling bag by my side I stood by the door and took a final glance at the room. I was surely going to miss it because it had somehow become a part of my life during my few day's stay in California. There was not much difference between the hotel room and my room in Adrian's house in America.I ran my eyes from the cozy bed to the marble floor and the smooth walls. I took a deep breath savoring the soothing scent of the air fresheners and flowers for the last time. Maybe not the last but I never could tell.I shut the door slowly wishing whoever was the
Once seated inside, I feigned a stiff face, trying to avoid Adrian's inquisitive eyes. I knew he was going to ask about it, so why save him the stress by telling him voluntarily? The car was soon in motion, increasing its speed gradually. I could still feel his fiery gaze fixed on me; it soon became overwhelming.I tried ignoring him, trying to divert my attention, and thought to focus on something more demanding, what Kira had just told me at the hotel a couple of minutes ago. But just when I was about to dive into my thinking realm Adrian spoke up, his voice snapping out of it all.“Do I need to ask you what you were doing with that lady before you tell me?”I didn't say a word, not even a strand of hair on my body moved in response to his question. I had to buy myself some time to figure out what I was going to tell him because of course, I never had the intention of telling him the truth.“Am I talking to a stick?” He roared again this time with a wave of annoyance in his voice.“
“Don't pick up the call”. My subconscious mind whispered. Is that going to work? Ignoring Samuel's calls is an indirect way of fueling his anger and I am not ready to incur his wrath. I didn't also want to give him the impression that I knew what he wanted to say and I was guilty of it. Adrian was still wearing the same creepy face. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that he had a hand in this; his expression told it all. Now, it dawned on me what he meant when he said, “We will see about that.” Is that how badly he wanted to hear what transpired between me and Kira? He had to involve Samuel.I bit my lower lips lightly as a wave of regret washed through me. I knew telling him to his face that I didn't want to tell him about it was a bad idea. Maybe I would have just lied or fabricated some stories to satisfy his curiosity. Now Samuel was in the picture, making it more complicated.I felt a familiar sense of homeliness then I realized our jet was slowly reaching the ground. I had
I inhaled and exhaled, but I didn't get the result I needed, so I inhaled and exhaled again. Turning around I saw Marcus standing far off with Adrian by his side. He was looking in my direction while Adrian was just staring into the space. He gestured to me to come back and I started walking briskly. Each step made me hate what I was doing more. When I was a few inches away from them, I stopped abruptly hoping he would just say whatever he wanted to say and get it done with.“Huh, why are you standing there? You can come forward; I don't bite”. He said his voice loud and resounding.I cursed him under my breath and surged a few more steps forward. When I got to where he stood, he opened his arms for a hug, but I turned it down by extending my right hand for a handshake. Adrian chuckled at what I did and I guess Marcus was ashamed.“Good day, Jenny; how was your trip?” He asked with a weird smile.“Fine,” I muttered.“Ohh forgive my manners. I am Marcus Lopez Adrian's best friend.” He
The idea started coming alive slowly. I made a gloomy stormy ocean under an overhead sky. I inserted rigid rocks in the distance one that the waves would hit in fury. My fingers went faster as I blended the colors to smoothen the sides; my mind was totally immersed in the process. As I painted, the wall clock behind me seemed to be ticking faster than usual. The house was still, and the only sound was the one my brush was making as it worked on the canvas.I remembered to stop only when my waist ached slightly; I had sat for too long. My hands were both in paint. I dropped the brush and stood up taking a step backward. I stared at my work. I didn't show much expertise or perfection. Some parts were not well blended, and others were inaccurate, but it depicted me at that moment. It detailed how I felt; uneasiness and unsure but full of hope that needed a boost.A small smile appeared on my lips as I wiped my brushes free from the paint. Painting had always been an irreplaceable part of
“Alright Tiller, make sure all the board members are seated before I arrive. It's a very important meeting.” Adrian shouted with his phone held close to his ear.The caller replied and he affirmed.“That's true I will be there shortly”. He replied and hung up.Descending the stairs with his briefcase in his hand, I stood firmly by the side of the door, waiting for him. I held the hem of my nightie nervously gulping hard. I had stood there for close to an hour before he showed up. He frowned when he saw me and I did the same thing.“Jenny, I am in a hurry right now so you will have to wait till I come back”. He said carelessly heading to the exit door.“No, no, just hear me out first………….Bang!!!He slammed the door behind me and that was it. Just like that, he was gone, leaving the house silent except for the sound of the ticking clock. I stood still for a few seconds, looking at the door, hoping he would probably come back and hear me out. But the silence only lingered, grasping me l
It felt weird moving into a place I had never been called into, although it was practically a part of our shared home. On my first glance into the room, I felt a sudden air of tenderness and severity. I think the room was kind of bigger than I expected. It was indeed a master bedroom well structured with the right fixtures and fittings. The white-painted walls gave a sense of clarity and homeliness; although the atmosphere was tense, it was okay for his gender. The king-size bed that dominated the middle of the room was just perfect, the white bedding complimenting the curtains and the wall paint. I gave the interior decorator a thumbs up.On the other end, a bookshelf rested on the wall well stacked with books of all kinds. Adrian was a bookworm and he tried to impose it on everyone in the house. That's why he kept a bookshelf in all the rooms in his mansion. His workspace was another thing that made me gasp well organized with piles of files and documents neatly placed on the sizabl
A shrill ring cut through the silent corridor of the hospital-one of William's phones was ringing. He reached for it in a flash and answered the call in a racing heart. The voice on the other side sounded strong and commanding-no room for any doubt or hesitation."Where are you?" Adrian asked, leaving no room for arguing. In an instant, William's heart sank, with his mind racing towards the implication of Adrian's question. He did not ask him which hospital he was in, but where he was; it was as if he knew where he was. The realization sent a shiver down William's spine, and he felt his voice catch in his throat."Ehhhhh." he stammered, faltering.Adrian was explosive in response. "Speak up, my friend!" his voice boomed through the phone."What are you stammering for? Or is my wife dead?" The words hung in the air at once a challenge and a threat. William felt his heart pounding with the struggle to respond; his palms started to perspire."No, sir, no, sir," he said at once, the words
The eyes of Dr. Fredrick shone with urgency, and his whole body was filled with anticipation. Another minute more he could hardly wait for; he was out of patience, began to pace up and down in front of the ward, his hands trembling like that of a thief who had been caught red-handed."Nurse!" he yelled, stamping his foot on the ground as his voice reverberated down the corridors. The echo of this sound in the hospital was like a clarion call-one that could not be ignored. Immediately, the nurse came running to the ward, her face a picture of concern as she hastened to attend to the doctor's summons."What is it, Sir?" she asked breathlessly as she struggled to keep up with the doctor's frantic pace.Doctor Fredrick's eyes flashed into hers, his stare intense as he gave his directions."Get the surgery ready," he said in a low urgent tone."We are about to perform a heart transplant now."The nurse widened her eyes in surprise but wasted no time, hurrying to prepare the operation theat
Adrian's voice came like thunder over the phone, and a cold shiver ran down William's spine as he had never before heard Adrian speak with such urgency and emotion.Adrian was a man known for his tough exterior, his business acumen, and his strict demeanor. Yet, when it came to his wife, Jenny, he was a different person altogether. He had human feelings for her, feelings that he rarely showed to anyone else.William was scared; he heard the running heartbeat of his heart as he listened to Adrian's angry voice. He knew he had to do something quickly to cool off Adrian's anger and get the doctor to attend to Jenny.Immediately, he sprang from his seat and scurried to the doctor's office, his legs moving with swiftness down the hall to try to soothe Adrian's temper. He was now at the doctor's, and Mr. William delicately knocked on the door as his knuckles kissed the wood softly."Come in," a voice called from behind the door in a meek manner. The door cracked, and William slid into the
Adrian paced around his office, the soles of his shoes echoing from the walls-a rhythmic accompaniment to turbulent thoughts. He paced around, looking into the floor as though he was looking for some sort of misplaced treasure. His face furrowed: his brow did show worry and concern. He was tormented by uncertainty over what would next happen, with his mind consumed by the fear of Mr. Shanks' response. The memory of Jenny's collapse in front of Mr. Shanks' investors was fresh within his mind, the shame and embarrassment still burning within him. Adrian boiled in anger and frustration as his mind went to the words of Mr. Shanks:"I don't pay my workers well.”He slammed his hand onto the table. The sound resonated through the room, like the cracking of thunder. Books that lay upon the table tumbled to the floor, their pages fluttering open like wounded birds.Adrian's face twisted in agony and he screamed, his voice a raw and primeval shriek. "No………!" he yelled, his hands tearing at his
"No, sir, please don't go!" Mr. Adrian pleaded as he tried to stop investors from storming out of the company in a fit of anger."Let's talk about this; there must be a way we can resolve our differences.""I don't think so," one of the investors turned and said. "I think you don't pay your manager well, that's why she couldn't even answer our questions.""Why do you say that?" Adrian asked as he tried to defend Jenny."I say that because the lady who slumped looks stressed, that's the reason she slumped," the investor added. "We will send you our response soon," Mr Shank said as he and his core investors left the company. The voices of the investors made Mr. Williams run out from the other office to the conference room to see what was happening. "I! I!" Williams shouted, running to the lifeless body of Jenny, slumped to the floor, her body limp and her face pale."Ahh, no! What's happened to her?" Williams exclaimed, shaking me gently. "Wake up! please wake up!"But I didn't respond
We got into the car and zoomed off to the Adrian company. I was feeling a little bit anxious. Finally, we got to the company, the name of the company welcome us and the beautiful environment was wowMr. Williams, the manager who had been shaking under pressure; quickly handed him all the necessary files. With a great deal of confidence, he showed the people present in the room.I was so confident that Adrian was taken aback, and soon found himself stealing glances at him as he flipped through the pages of the document."Good morning sir," the cleaner said, breaking the spell. "Mr. Jude, our client, is here to see you.""Alright, I'll be there in a minute," Adrian replied, adjusting his clothes. He looked at me and then the other remaining six workers and sighed."I want this client to invest in our company," he said to me."I, please, I would be happy if you make us proud. I know you haven't done this before, but I just believe in you," Mr. Williams said, desperation and hope so thick
No sooner had the words escaped my lips than Helen's eyes had widened in alarm and she let out a loud shout, but I was quick to react. I swiftly clamped my hand over her mouth, my fingers pressing gently against her lips to silence her. "Why are you shouting?" I asked her in a low, urgent voice, looking around the room nervously, fearful that Julian might have heard her cry out.Helen's eyes darted back and forth, her face pale with fear, as she whispered, "He will catch me, ma." Her voice was trembling, and I could feel the depth of her anxiety. I took a deep breath and, as reassuring as possible, my voice calm and soothing, told her, "No, he won't. Just do it, and be unnoticeable," I urged, my eyes locked on hers.Apprehension clouded her gaze; she was terrified that her ruse would be discovered. I knew by now that I really had to get her on my side. My knees nearly grazing the floor, I stepped closer, speaking in a begging, urgent voice:"Please, Helen, I beg of you. I need to kno
And as I sat, lost in my thoughts, came Adrian's soft voice to pierce my fog."Sit, my love." But I didn't utter a word, my mind still wandering to some far-off place, engrossed in the thoughts that had occupied me all day.Adrian's voice came again this time louder, more insistent, "Sit, babe." The sound of his voice was like a summer's breeze-soft and soothing but it was enough to bring me back to reality."Hmm, I breathed in immediately," I said, my voice a little shaky, as I slowly came back to the present."Sorry, I was lost in thought," I apologized, and my eyes found Adrian's concerned face across the table. A look of worry marked his features, and a pang of guilt pinched in my chest as I looked at him for the first time. The scent of the food wafted up to me: savory, full, and growling my stomach with anticipation.Today's dinner was a light, elegant rice flour and chicken soup. What astonished me most was the way it had been presented: freshly arranged with a handful of color
While reassurance on my part was due, it would not go away, and a shadow of skepticism and doubt remained in Adrian's eyes. But I knew I needed to reassure him and he had to believe that I meant to help him."Serious, Adrian," I said, the conviction laced deep in my voice as I reached out and laid my fingers on his shoulders. My fingers came into contact with his skin, and the tension in his body started to dissipate.Adrian's face slowly broke into a smile, crinkles forming around his eyes as he stared at me. But then his face turned curious, his eyebrows arching upwards in a questioning curve."But how will you do it?" he wondered, his voice full of wonder, eyes wide with curiosity. I smiled again, and excitement and anticipation started building up in me."Don't worry, I will do wonders," I said confidently, looking right into Adrian's eyes.He was still in shock, his eyes wide with wonder, trying to digest the fact that I was offering to help him. I decided to change the subject a
