Once seated inside, I feigned a stiff face, trying to avoid Adrian's inquisitive eyes. I knew he was going to ask about it, so why save him the stress by telling him voluntarily? The car was soon in motion, increasing its speed gradually. I could still feel his fiery gaze fixed on me; it soon became overwhelming.

I tried ignoring him, trying to divert my attention, and thought to focus on something more demanding, what Kira had just told me at the hotel a couple of minutes ago. But just when I was about to dive into my thinking realm Adrian spoke up, his voice snapping out of it all.

“Do I need to ask you what you were doing with that lady before you tell me?”

I didn't say a word, not even a strand of hair on my body moved in response to his question. I had to buy myself some time to figure out what I was going to tell him because of course, I never had the intention of telling him the truth.

“Am I talking to a stick?” He roared again this time with a wave of annoyance in his voice.

“What we were saying has nothing to do with you”. I muttered my voice trying so hard to gain composure.

“And that is the reason I want to hear it.” He persisted.

I knew he would insist that was why I gave him that reply to buy myself more time to come up with something to tell him.

“Hmm, she came to congratulate me on my excellent presentation yesterday,” I replied with all efforts to sound serious even if my answer was kind of amusing.

“Jenny, don't add fuel to my anger because I assure you that you will not like the outcome. Tell me what you were saying with that lady, and stop beating around the bush”. This time, he meant it; he was done being polite.

“It is personal”. I muttered trying to hide the fact that I was quivering from his outburst.

“We will see about that.” He mumbled.

He gave me a cold stare and clenched his fists beside him. At this point, if he gave me a heavy blow on my face, I would not be surprised. I could hear his teeth gnashing against each other while he wore a scary look denoting, “We shall see.”

The rest of the ride was silent and a total waste for me because my peace of mind was absent and I could not also think about all that Kira said. Despite the neatly installed air-conditioners in the luxurious car we drove I was still feeling a sensation of heat from within. It soon became evident when balls of sweat began to gather on my forehead. I wiped them off with the back of my palm and tucked my hair behind my ear nervously.

I tried not to feel intimidated by his confrontation but fear would not let me. Maybe I should just tell him and get everything done. But Adrian was such an easygoing person he made a big deal out of nothing. I needed to know why Julian wanted to get close to me; certainly, I did not take Kira's words for it. He may have good intentions or bad intentions; instead, you never can tell.

And if possible, I also wanted to know why he was at loggerheads with Adrian. It's really crazy to hate the wife and like the wife. Isn't that suspicious?

We soon reached the airport, and good enough, we were boarding Adrian's private jet. I didn't have to get stuck sitting right next to him on the public plane.

Too many matters are arising. Now that this issue is on the ground, Adrian would hear nothing about me going to see Mom. In fact, that would be his opportunity to give me a dose of my own medicine.

I curled up on a chair in a corner of his fucking jet, far away from him, reserved to myself.

“Come over here we need to sit close.” He ordered with his eyes glued to his screen.

“Why?” I muttered with furrowed brows.

“I need to have you under my watch”. He replied, still focusing on his tablet.

“Why is that?” I asked in a more confused tone.

“I don't want you stealing any stuff in my jet.” He replied, his voice laced with mockery.

“Mr Adrian I am not a thief.” I gasped, my eyes popping out of their sockets.

“I didn't call you one, but literally, whoever keeps secrets is capable of anything.” He replied bluntly.

A hush of anger descended on me making my heart beat faster. “No, Jenny,” I whispered inwardly. I can't let him get to me. I know he was looking for a way to hurt me but I didn't want to crown his efforts by satisfying him with devastation. So I smiled. Yes, I smiled, although deep down I was burning.

“What is that for?” Adrian replied, looking at me weirdly.

“I am smiling.” I replied innocently.

He returned to his tablet, scrolling away randomly. Soon his phone beeped and he picked it up.

“Hey, Marcus.” He greeted with a low-key smile.

The caller said something that made him giggle excessively.

“Sure I am in my jet now so I should be in America in the next thirty minutes.” He said, glancing at his wristwatch.

The caller said something I couldn't hear and he replied.

“Sure man, I really need to hang out. I have been sick from being around bad vibes.” He said and we made eye contact. I was still maintaining my sheepish smile.

“Alright, bro, catch you later.” He mumbled and hung up.

Then my own phone beeped and Samuel was the caller, I raised my head and stared at Adrian and he looked away carelessly.

“What did he do?”

“Don't pick up the call”. My subconscious mind whispered. Is that going to work? Ignoring Samuel's calls is an indirect way of fueling his anger and I am not ready to incur his wrath. I didn't also want to give him the impression that I knew what he wanted to say and I was guilty of it. Adrian was still wearing the same creepy face. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that he had a hand in this; his expression told it all. Now, it dawned on me what he meant when he said, “We will see about that.” Is that how badly he wanted to hear what transpired between me and Kira? He had to involve Samuel.I bit my lower lips lightly as a wave of regret washed through me. I knew telling him to his face that I didn't want to tell him about it was a bad idea. Maybe I would have just lied or fabricated some stories to satisfy his curiosity. Now Samuel was in the picture, making it more complicated.I felt a familiar sense of homeliness then I realized our jet was slowly reaching the ground. I had

I inhaled and exhaled, but I didn't get the result I needed, so I inhaled and exhaled again. Turning around I saw Marcus standing far off with Adrian by his side. He was looking in my direction while Adrian was just staring into the space. He gestured to me to come back and I started walking briskly. Each step made me hate what I was doing more. When I was a few inches away from them, I stopped abruptly hoping he would just say whatever he wanted to say and get it done with.“Huh, why are you standing there? You can come forward; I don't bite”. He said his voice loud and resounding.I cursed him under my breath and surged a few more steps forward. When I got to where he stood, he opened his arms for a hug, but I turned it down by extending my right hand for a handshake. Adrian chuckled at what I did and I guess Marcus was ashamed.“Good day, Jenny; how was your trip?” He asked with a weird smile.“Fine,” I muttered.“Ohh forgive my manners. I am Marcus Lopez Adrian's best friend.” He

The idea started coming alive slowly. I made a gloomy stormy ocean under an overhead sky. I inserted rigid rocks in the distance one that the waves would hit in fury. My fingers went faster as I blended the colors to smoothen the sides; my mind was totally immersed in the process. As I painted, the wall clock behind me seemed to be ticking faster than usual. The house was still, and the only sound was the one my brush was making as it worked on the canvas.I remembered to stop only when my waist ached slightly; I had sat for too long. My hands were both in paint. I dropped the brush and stood up taking a step backward. I stared at my work. I didn't show much expertise or perfection. Some parts were not well blended, and others were inaccurate, but it depicted me at that moment. It detailed how I felt; uneasiness and unsure but full of hope that needed a boost.A small smile appeared on my lips as I wiped my brushes free from the paint. Painting had always been an irreplaceable part of

“Alright Tiller, make sure all the board members are seated before I arrive. It's a very important meeting.” Adrian shouted with his phone held close to his ear.The caller replied and he affirmed.“That's true I will be there shortly”. He replied and hung up.Descending the stairs with his briefcase in his hand, I stood firmly by the side of the door, waiting for him. I held the hem of my nightie nervously gulping hard. I had stood there for close to an hour before he showed up. He frowned when he saw me and I did the same thing.“Jenny, I am in a hurry right now so you will have to wait till I come back”. He said carelessly heading to the exit door.“No, no, just hear me out first………….Bang!!!He slammed the door behind me and that was it. Just like that, he was gone, leaving the house silent except for the sound of the ticking clock. I stood still for a few seconds, looking at the door, hoping he would probably come back and hear me out. But the silence only lingered, grasping me l

It felt weird moving into a place I had never been called into, although it was practically a part of our shared home. On my first glance into the room, I felt a sudden air of tenderness and severity. I think the room was kind of bigger than I expected. It was indeed a master bedroom well structured with the right fixtures and fittings. The white-painted walls gave a sense of clarity and homeliness; although the atmosphere was tense, it was okay for his gender. The king-size bed that dominated the middle of the room was just perfect, the white bedding complimenting the curtains and the wall paint. I gave the interior decorator a thumbs up.On the other end, a bookshelf rested on the wall well stacked with books of all kinds. Adrian was a bookworm and he tried to impose it on everyone in the house. That's why he kept a bookshelf in all the rooms in his mansion. His workspace was another thing that made me gasp well organized with piles of files and documents neatly placed on the sizabl

I have to check out trending designs and paintings, buy new brushes, canvas and paint, and some artworks also.My pen was still held in place as I added my last and most important thought.“Mom deserves all of

Helen leaned in to listen to what I had to say.“It's nothing serious, it's just that Adrian must not know that I took a tour around his house,” I whispered cautiously.“But why ma'am?” She asked, visibly confused.“Helen, please just do as I say,” I replied, looking away.“Alright, ma'am.” She muttered.I didn't want Adrian to feel that I admired his wealth and possessions, which would only boost his ego. Since he feels that I don't exist to him I should do the same.I held hands with Helen, and together, we went down the straight path. My eyes were roaming around to capture every detail within reach. Everything was orderly maintained; the lawn grasses were low and evergreen, and the flowers and hedges were so neat and trimmed, creating a distinct walkway. A mini artificial waterfall was situated in the center of the garden complimenting the beauty of nature.“I never knew this mansion was this vast on the outside,” l confessed, my voice laced with astonishment and shock.Helen nodde

Helen discussed the different parts of the estate as we walked further. She gave accurate details like she was the owner, making me baffled. There was a little orchard in a corner filled with trees and lovely fruits, purifying the atmosphere with its gentle breeze. We reached a vegetable garden where we plucked some tomatoes for dinner. And lastly, we went to the greenhouse with a glass see-through wall.“I would urge you to come here whenever you're heavy with burdens or grief, this place is a therapy on its own,” Helen said intently. You're not always happy. Everyone in the house knows about it, but I just wish you strength to pull through.”My heart overflowed with appreciation as I glanced at her, she s

A shrill ring cut through the silent corridor of the hospital-one of William's phones was ringing. He reached for it in a flash and answered the call in a racing heart. The voice on the other side sounded strong and commanding-no room for any doubt or hesitation."Where are you?" Adrian asked, leaving no room for arguing. In an instant, William's heart sank, with his mind racing towards the implication of Adrian's question. He did not ask him which hospital he was in, but where he was; it was as if he knew where he was. The realization sent a shiver down William's spine, and he felt his voice catch in his throat."Ehhhhh." he stammered, faltering.Adrian was explosive in response. "Speak up, my friend!" his voice boomed through the phone."What are you stammering for? Or is my wife dead?" The words hung in the air at once a challenge and a threat. William felt his heart pounding with the struggle to respond; his palms started to perspire."No, sir, no, sir," he said at once, the words

Another minute more he could hardly wait for; he was out of patience, began to pace up and down in front of the ward, his hands trembling like that of a thief who had been caught red-handed."Nurse!" he yelled, stamping his foot on the ground as his voice reverberated down the corridors. The echo of this sound in the hospital was like a clarion call-one that could not be ignored. Immediately, the nurse came running to the ward, her face a picture of concern as she hastened to attend to the doctor's summons."What is it, Sir?" she asked breathlessly as she struggled to keep up with the doctor's frantic pace.Doctor Fredrick's eyes flashed into hers, his stare intense as he gave his directions."Get the surgery ready," he said in a low urgent tone."We are about to perform a heart transplant now."The nurse widened her eyes in surprise but wasted no time, hurrying to prepare the operation theat

Adrian's voice came like thunder over the phone, and a cold shiver ran down William's spine as he had never before heard Adrian speak with such urgency and emotion.Adrian was a man known for his tough exterior, his business acumen, and his strict demeanor. Yet, when it came to his wife, Jenny, he was a different person altogether. He had human feelings for her, feelings that he rarely showed to anyone else.William was scared; he heard the running heartbeat of his heart as he listened to Adrian's angry voice. He knew he had to do something quickly to cool off Adrian's anger and get the doctor to attend to Jenny.Immediately, he sprang from his seat and scurried to the doctor's office, his legs moving with swiftness down the hall to try to soothe Adrian's temper. He was now at the doctor's, and Mr. William delicately knocked on the door as his knuckles kissed the wood softly."Come in," a voice called from behind the door in a meek manner. The door cracked, and William slid into the

He was tormented by uncertainty over what would next happen, with his mind consumed by the fear of Mr. Shanks' response. The memory of Jenny's collapse in front of Mr. Shanks' investors was fresh within his mind, the shame and embarrassment still burning within him. Adrian boiled in anger and frustration as his mind went to the words of Mr. Shanks:"I don't pay my workers well.”He slammed his hand onto the table. The sound resonated through the room, like the cracking of thunder. Books that lay upon the table tumbled to the floor, their pages fluttering open like wounded birds.Adrian's face twisted in agony and he screamed, his voice a raw and primeval shriek. No sooner had the words escaped my lips than Helen's eyes had widened in alarm and she let out a loud shout, but I was quick to react. I swiftly clamped my hand over her mouth, my fingers pressing gently against her lips to silence her. "Why are you shouting?" I asked her in a low, urgent voice, looking around the room nervously, fearful that Julian might have heard her cry out.Helen's eyes darted back and forth, her face pale with fear, as she whispered, "He will catch me, ma." Her voice was trembling, and I could feel the depth of her anxiety. I took a deep breath and, as reassuring as possible, my voice calm and soothing, told her, "No, he won't. Just do it, and be unnoticeable," I urged, my eyes locked on hers.Apprehension clouded her gaze; she was terrified that her ruse would be discovered. I knew by now that I really had to get her on my side. My knees nearly grazing the floor, I stepped closer, speaking in a begging, urgent voice:"Please, Helen, I beg of you. I need to kno

And as I sat, lost in my thoughts, came Adrian's soft voice to pierce my fog."Sit, my love." But I didn't utter a word, my mind still wandering to some far-off place, engrossed in the thoughts that had occupied me all day.Adrian's voice came again this time louder, more insistent, "Sit, babe." The sound of his voice was like a summer's breeze-soft and soothing but it was enough to bring me back to reality."Hmm, I breathed in immediately," I said, my voice a little shaky, as I slowly came back to the present."Sorry, I was lost in thought," I apologized, and my eyes found Adrian's concerned face across the table. A look of worry marked his features, and a pang of guilt pinched in my chest as I looked at him for the first time. The scent of the food wafted up to me: savory, full, and growling my stomach with anticipation.Today's dinner was a light, elegant rice flour and chicken soup. What astonished me most was the way it had been presented: freshly arranged with a handful of color

While reassurance on my part was due, it would not go away, and a shadow of skepticism and doubt remained in Adrian's eyes. But I knew I needed to reassure him and he had to believe that I meant to help him."Serious, Adrian," I said, the conviction laced deep in my voice as I reached out and laid my fingers on his shoulders. My fingers came into contact with his skin, and the tension in his body started to dissipate.Adrian's face slowly broke into a smile, crinkles forming around his eyes as he stared at me. But then his face turned curious, his eyebrows arching upwards in a questioning curve."But how will you do it?" he wondered, his voice full of wonder, eyes wide with curiosity. I smiled again, and excitement and anticipation started building up in me."Don't worry, I will do wonders," I said confidently, looking right into Adrian's eyes.He was still in shock, his eyes wide with wonder, trying to digest the fact that I was offering to help him.
