The meeting finally came to a wrap. I almost jumped out of my chair in excitement. When I stood up, my limbs went numb for a few seconds and I had to hold on to the table and Adrian's left hand for support. He glared at me, confused, and yanked my hand off. I gulped hard and picked up my bag waiting for him to finish exchanging pleasantries with the board members so we could go home.
Out of the blue, the ladies who snubbed me from the commencement of the meeting gathered around me and raised their phone cameras in the air. Selfies were shuttering here and there and I was just trying to make sense of what was going on. Soon, they were making short videos. Some were going live on I*******m, TikTok, and X, saying things like, “Guys, guess who showed up today? Billionaire Adrian's queen and you all know I don't have time for dull moments; we are connecting with her right away.”
Maybe I would have had any problem with the whole thing if they were doing it decently and coded but we're just making a hell of noise everywhere and making a big deal out of nothing. This was one of the numerous reasons why I hated the spotlight, so much inconvenience. I kept smiling sheepishly at all the cameras put in front of me, I couldn't help but curse those ladies under my breath.
Before I could finish making my wish of the ground opening to swallow me up, a firm hand grabbed me tightly and pulled me out of the mini crowd. It was no other person than Adrian. When we got to the car, I wanted to reach for the door handle and pull it open, but he held my hand midway and shoved it aside, brushing my belly in the process and sending cold shivers down my spine. He opened the door and held my hand to help me climb in. I tried hard not to blush, but the crowd would not let me be.
The moment the driver turned on the ignition, everything went back to normal. The usual silence and spontaneous side eyes. I leaned back into the car seat, heaving a deep sigh. I felt used like some tool who was only remembered when the need arose. A series of thoughts crossed my mind, one of which was “Was there any lady in that meeting room doing what I was doing? I mean someone who signed a contract marriage with their man and is being treated like some piece of trash. I doubted if they were because all of them wore this satisfied look; they did not look like people who had emotional issues or people who were going through life's struggles. Most of them were even playing and acting so romantic with their spouses after the meeting. I sighed and looked out of the window.
The car soon came to a halt and Adrian quickly alighted and went inside the building we parked behind.
“I almost forgot that everything is back to normal”. I muttered and opened the door.
I looked around and noticed that this wasn't the hotel we had lodged and checked out from. If we were staying back in California, then why were we checking into a different hotel? But the only way to find out was to ask him. I followed him quickly and soon met up with him at the receptionist's table.
“What are you doing?” I asked panting from the little race.
He glanced at me and returned to attend to the receptionist. Later on, he replied.
“What does it look like I'm doing?” He asked rudely.
“I'm just confused. We checked out of the other hotel, and you said we were going back to America, but here we are trying to lodge into another hotel.” I stuttered.
“Do you have a problem with it?” He asked, raising an eyebrow.
“No, I don't”. I replied slowly. “But where is my luggage?
He got the keys to the rooms and turned around swiftly heading to the elevator. I followed him behind hoping to get an answer to the question I asked. He tapped on the elevator buttons and it slid open. Adrian went in, hoping that I would do the same.
“Are you going to sleep there?” He asked, looking pissed off.
“No,” I replied abruptly.
“Then come inside the fucking elevator”. He ordered, his voice close to anger.
I fidgeted and stepped inside the elevator. The door slid close behind me. We began ascending progressively, but the lights suddenly went out, and the elevator stopped at once. It was a bit dark inside there. Adrian was freaking out; he rained curses on the management of the hotel.
“What the hell just happened, we are stuck in an elevator. No this can't be happening after a very tiring and stressful day. I am going to sue this god-damned hotel and see to it that it gets closed down…….
He kept ranting non-stop. I just curled up in a corner and folded my arms across my chest. I did not say anything, maybe because I did not have anything to say. Adrian tried to dial a couple of numbers, including “911,” but none was going through. I wondered if the power failure affected the entire California.
When he was tired, he sat on the floor with his coat folded on his thighs. I could tell that he was foaming from within.
“If only we didn't check out of the previous hotel, we would not be here by now”. I murmured with a sigh.
“What did you say?” He asked with slightly furrowed brows.
“I did not say anything,” I replied with pursed lips. It was dark so he didn't see me doing that.
“I heard you.” He insisted.
I remained mute, biting my lower lips and praying he would just come off it, but no, he did not.
“Do you think I am a fool?” He asked and I scoffed silently.
“Why would I? I asked, throwing my hands up in the air.
“I had my reason for checking out of that hotel earlier today.” He said matter of factly.
“I know,” I mumbled in reply.
“What's the reason?” He asked almost immediately.
“I don't know the exact reason, but I just know that only an insane person does things without reason.” I shuttered and heaved a sigh at the perfect answer I gave him.
“That hotel worker was the reason.” He muttered.
“What!” I exclaimed sitting up.
“Yeah,” He groaned.
A series of thoughts flashed through my mind. Why would Adrian go to the extent of checking us out of a hotel because of a common harmless-looking worker? Isn't it suspicious?
We stayed in the elevator for about an hour before the lights were finally restored. The elevator started working again, and in no time, we got to our rooms. I thought to ask Adrian about my luggage again, but before I could do so, he disappeared into his room and locked the door. I quietly opened my room door and went inside, when I turned on the lights I saw all my luggage right in front of me.“He really meant it”. I murmured aloud. My hurting back and my swollen feet told me I was not going to unpack anything at that moment. All I needed was a quick shower to loosen up and a good night's sleep. I wished I could get a massage, but it was too let to go to the spa in the hotel as the attendants don't work all around the clock.I woke up the next morning expecting to feel better but I turned out worse than the previous night. My feet, instead of reducing, got more swollen, and my back was a total mess; I couldn't even sit well.“Why the hell am I like this”. I cried making a face.I d
“Do not mess with me.” He murmured, “I know you do not owe me any commitment in this marriage, and so do I, but flirting with fools will do nothing but soil my reputation, and I will not let that happen. Is that understood?”.I nodded abruptly hoping he would just release me because my jawline was hurting. He dropped my face and left the room. Now he is accusing me falsely, I was never flirting. I pulled myself upwards and covered up with the duvet.“Okay, Jenny. In situations like this, all you have to do is to sleep away your worries.” I murmured to myself and shut my eyes.*************“Bro, you're not serious, are you? Marcus asked, amidst laughter.“What's funny?”. Adrian asked, getting pissed off.“Why should you be angry because another man was touching her?” Marcus asked with his hands in the air.“She's my wife for crying out loud, does that ring a bell?” Adrian replied, tilting his face forward.“But you also said emphatically that she does not mean anything to you. You sai
A knock on the door dragged me back to reality.“Good morning,” I murmured when I opened the door to see Adrian standing with his hands folded across his chest.“We will be going back to America tomorrow.” He muttered. I tried so hard to stop myself from smiling but it failed. He glared at me and scoffed.“But we still have unfinished business here and you must take care of it before we leave,” Adrian added, making my brows furrow slightly.“Okay, I think I get the unfinished business part, but your pronouns are confusing. What do you mean by” you” must take care of it? I asked with uneasiness written all over me.“Blockhead. It simply means that you will be the performer at this particular event”. He replied with a mischievous look.“Wait. You are joking right?” I stuttered, blinking nervously.“I don't joke Jenny”. He replied firmly. His words hit me directly and penetrated my soul spontaneously leaving me breathless.“I should perform in your place?” I blinked at him with my jaw s
I got back to my room and collapsed on the floor, tears clouding my eyes in a few seconds. No. This was not the time for emotional dramas. The event is tomorrow and a bit of rehearsals would be wise.I sat on my bed with my two legs knitted together tucking my hair behind my ears. I braced myself to accept my fate.“This is not making any headway, what am I even supposed to talk about?” I murmured. The fact that I don't even know the person I am up against is what baffles me. Also, I have no idea about public speaking, and this whole thing looks so void to me.I racked every nook and cranny in my brain for a clue of where to start. After much wrestling, nature came calling, and I gradually submitted to the warm hands of sleep. The next morning came, but I was still cuddling my pillow, oblivious of my plight, until a cold knock on the door snapped me back to reality.“Oh my God it is morning already. Jenny, you are finished,” I exclaimed, jumping out of bed like a frog.“Jenny, are you
The event hall was mind-blowing, a haven that spoke luxury and class. Above everyone were the sparkling chandeliers like stars. Its bright light shone over the crowd of elegance and style. A glance at the accurate arrangement of the flickering candles, the orderly ornaments positioned on top of round tables with neat shiny covers, and the sweet melodies that filled the air were all evidence of a perfect detail well planned. The fresh scents of roses that filled the air, plus the expensive deodorants, gave a lasting impression to our breaths. My glare roamed to the podium situated ahead of me, it wasn't left out in the luxurious decorations and lighting. It looks like standing on it would take you to a different dimension. The sight of the erect microphone sent cold shivers down my spine and it refreshed my memory of the previous day. Sweat buds began to gather on my forehead despite the numerous air conditioners and proper ventilation in the hall. My hands grabbed my purse tightly as
The shackles of fear that gripped my being began to break loose. My voice, which started out trembling and shaky, found its rhythm along the line. The words that were skillfully captured from the speech made earlier by the Jerkins came fresh, but it didn't sound copied; it was as real as realness itself. I spoke genuinely from within, crafting my thoughts and knowledge with preciseness and passion, and to my surprise, I could feel my listeners resonating with me.Their once numb expressions drifted off to sincere interest and engagement as their genuine nods transformed into sitting up and with utmost concentration. A warm hush descended over the hall as words departed from my mouth. My voice is smooth and courageous now, accompanied by the weight and authenticity that was absent in the speech made by my rival, or, should I say, Adrian's rival. I could see the spark in their souls, the surge of depth in their silence, everything just pushed me and gave me a reason to keep going.By th
Our journey back to America was a smooth one. It was quite chilly that morning as we were slowly approaching the winter season. I woke up shivering from the cold, and even after bathing in warm water, it didn't change anything. I knew I was going to freeze because I didn't bring sweaters, coats, or any winter suit with me. I had to improvise by wearing three shirts at a time but I hope no one noticed.Stepping out of the room with my traveling bag by my side I stood by the door and took a final glance at the room. I was surely going to miss it because it had somehow become a part of my life during my few day's stay in California. There was not much difference between the hotel room and my room in Adrian's house in America.I ran my eyes from the cozy bed to the marble floor and the smooth walls. I took a deep breath savoring the soothing scent of the air fresheners and flowers for the last time. Maybe not the last but I never could tell.I shut the door slowly wishing whoever was the
Once seated inside, I feigned a stiff face, trying to avoid Adrian's inquisitive eyes. I knew he was going to ask about it, so why save him the stress by telling him voluntarily? The car was soon in motion, increasing its speed gradually. I could still feel his fiery gaze fixed on me; it soon became overwhelming.I tried ignoring him, trying to divert my attention, and thought to focus on something more demanding, what Kira had just told me at the hotel a couple of minutes ago. But just when I was about to dive into my thinking realm Adrian spoke up, his voice snapping out of it all.“Do I need to ask you what you were doing with that lady before you tell me?”I didn't say a word, not even a strand of hair on my body moved in response to his question. I had to buy myself some time to figure out what I was going to tell him because of course, I never had the intention of telling him the truth.“Am I talking to a stick?” He roared again this time with a wave of annoyance in his voice.“
A shrill ring cut through the silent corridor of the hospital-one of William's phones was ringing. He reached for it in a flash and answered the call in a racing heart. The voice on the other side sounded strong and commanding-no room for any doubt or hesitation."Where are you?" Adrian asked, leaving no room for arguing. In an instant, William's heart sank, with his mind racing towards the implication of Adrian's question. He did not ask him which hospital he was in, but where he was; it was as if he knew where he was. The realization sent a shiver down William's spine, and he felt his voice catch in his throat."Ehhhhh." he stammered, faltering.Adrian was explosive in response. "Speak up, my friend!" his voice boomed through the phone."What are you stammering for? Or is my wife dead?" The words hung in the air at once a challenge and a threat. William felt his heart pounding with the struggle to respond; his palms started to perspire."No, sir, no, sir," he said at once, the words
The eyes of Dr. Fredrick shone with urgency, and his whole body was filled with anticipation. Another minute more he could hardly wait for; he was out of patience, began to pace up and down in front of the ward, his hands trembling like that of a thief who had been caught red-handed."Nurse!" he yelled, stamping his foot on the ground as his voice reverberated down the corridors. The echo of this sound in the hospital was like a clarion call-one that could not be ignored. Immediately, the nurse came running to the ward, her face a picture of concern as she hastened to attend to the doctor's summons."What is it, Sir?" she asked breathlessly as she struggled to keep up with the doctor's frantic pace.Doctor Fredrick's eyes flashed into hers, his stare intense as he gave his directions."Get the surgery ready," he said in a low urgent tone."We are about to perform a heart transplant now."The nurse widened her eyes in surprise but wasted no time, hurrying to prepare the operation theat
Adrian's voice came like thunder over the phone, and a cold shiver ran down William's spine as he had never before heard Adrian speak with such urgency and emotion.Adrian was a man known for his tough exterior, his business acumen, and his strict demeanor. Yet, when it came to his wife, Jenny, he was a different person altogether. He had human feelings for her, feelings that he rarely showed to anyone else.William was scared; he heard the running heartbeat of his heart as he listened to Adrian's angry voice. He knew he had to do something quickly to cool off Adrian's anger and get the doctor to attend to Jenny.Immediately, he sprang from his seat and scurried to the doctor's office, his legs moving with swiftness down the hall to try to soothe Adrian's temper. He was now at the doctor's, and Mr. William delicately knocked on the door as his knuckles kissed the wood softly."Come in," a voice called from behind the door in a meek manner. The door cracked, and William slid into the
Adrian paced around his office, the soles of his shoes echoing from the walls-a rhythmic accompaniment to turbulent thoughts. He paced around, looking into the floor as though he was looking for some sort of misplaced treasure. His face furrowed: his brow did show worry and concern. He was tormented by uncertainty over what would next happen, with his mind consumed by the fear of Mr. Shanks' response. The memory of Jenny's collapse in front of Mr. Shanks' investors was fresh within his mind, the shame and embarrassment still burning within him. Adrian boiled in anger and frustration as his mind went to the words of Mr. Shanks:"I don't pay my workers well.”He slammed his hand onto the table. The sound resonated through the room, like the cracking of thunder. Books that lay upon the table tumbled to the floor, their pages fluttering open like wounded birds.Adrian's face twisted in agony and he screamed, his voice a raw and primeval shriek. "No………!" he yelled, his hands tearing at his
"No, sir, please don't go!" Mr. Adrian pleaded as he tried to stop investors from storming out of the company in a fit of anger."Let's talk about this; there must be a way we can resolve our differences.""I don't think so," one of the investors turned and said. "I think you don't pay your manager well, that's why she couldn't even answer our questions.""Why do you say that?" Adrian asked as he tried to defend Jenny."I say that because the lady who slumped looks stressed, that's the reason she slumped," the investor added. "We will send you our response soon," Mr Shank said as he and his core investors left the company. The voices of the investors made Mr. Williams run out from the other office to the conference room to see what was happening. "I! I!" Williams shouted, running to the lifeless body of Jenny, slumped to the floor, her body limp and her face pale."Ahh, no! What's happened to her?" Williams exclaimed, shaking me gently. "Wake up! please wake up!"But I didn't respond
We got into the car and zoomed off to the Adrian company. I was feeling a little bit anxious. Finally, we got to the company, the name of the company welcome us and the beautiful environment was wowMr. Williams, the manager who had been shaking under pressure; quickly handed him all the necessary files. With a great deal of confidence, he showed the people present in the room.I was so confident that Adrian was taken aback, and soon found himself stealing glances at him as he flipped through the pages of the document."Good morning sir," the cleaner said, breaking the spell. "Mr. Jude, our client, is here to see you.""Alright, I'll be there in a minute," Adrian replied, adjusting his clothes. He looked at me and then the other remaining six workers and sighed."I want this client to invest in our company," he said to me."I, please, I would be happy if you make us proud. I know you haven't done this before, but I just believe in you," Mr. Williams said, desperation and hope so thick
No sooner had the words escaped my lips than Helen's eyes had widened in alarm and she let out a loud shout, but I was quick to react. I swiftly clamped my hand over her mouth, my fingers pressing gently against her lips to silence her. "Why are you shouting?" I asked her in a low, urgent voice, looking around the room nervously, fearful that Julian might have heard her cry out.Helen's eyes darted back and forth, her face pale with fear, as she whispered, "He will catch me, ma." Her voice was trembling, and I could feel the depth of her anxiety. I took a deep breath and, as reassuring as possible, my voice calm and soothing, told her, "No, he won't. Just do it, and be unnoticeable," I urged, my eyes locked on hers.Apprehension clouded her gaze; she was terrified that her ruse would be discovered. I knew by now that I really had to get her on my side. My knees nearly grazing the floor, I stepped closer, speaking in a begging, urgent voice:"Please, Helen, I beg of you. I need to kno
And as I sat, lost in my thoughts, came Adrian's soft voice to pierce my fog."Sit, my love." But I didn't utter a word, my mind still wandering to some far-off place, engrossed in the thoughts that had occupied me all day.Adrian's voice came again this time louder, more insistent, "Sit, babe." The sound of his voice was like a summer's breeze-soft and soothing but it was enough to bring me back to reality."Hmm, I breathed in immediately," I said, my voice a little shaky, as I slowly came back to the present."Sorry, I was lost in thought," I apologized, and my eyes found Adrian's concerned face across the table. A look of worry marked his features, and a pang of guilt pinched in my chest as I looked at him for the first time. The scent of the food wafted up to me: savory, full, and growling my stomach with anticipation.Today's dinner was a light, elegant rice flour and chicken soup. What astonished me most was the way it had been presented: freshly arranged with a handful of color
While reassurance on my part was due, it would not go away, and a shadow of skepticism and doubt remained in Adrian's eyes. But I knew I needed to reassure him and he had to believe that I meant to help him."Serious, Adrian," I said, the conviction laced deep in my voice as I reached out and laid my fingers on his shoulders. My fingers came into contact with his skin, and the tension in his body started to dissipate.Adrian's face slowly broke into a smile, crinkles forming around his eyes as he stared at me. But then his face turned curious, his eyebrows arching upwards in a questioning curve."But how will you do it?" he wondered, his voice full of wonder, eyes wide with curiosity. I smiled again, and excitement and anticipation started building up in me."Don't worry, I will do wonders," I said confidently, looking right into Adrian's eyes.He was still in shock, his eyes wide with wonder, trying to digest the fact that I was offering to help him. I decided to change the subject a
