Samuel was standing at the door with a medical attendant by his side. The look on his face told me that I was in trouble.

“Why the hell are you doing here?” He asked, shouting at the top of his voice.

I stood up abruptly and stammered.

“I……. I came to see Mom”.

“How dare you?” He yelled again, making me take a step backward.

I remained mute as usual. I refused to regret my actions and applauded myself for a job well done.

“Get out of here, back to where you came from this minute, and don't ever show yourself stupid self till further notice”.

I picked up my bag from the floor, tucked my hair behind my ear, and walked out of the room. Sammie and the medical attendant proceeded into the room and started discussing in low tones, I stopped walking abruptly and came back curious to hear what they were saying.

I peeped and saw the medical attendant trying to inject the same yellowish substance into Mom's drip bag. I don't know why something inside of me was feeling suspicious about it but I shoved it aside and turned around to leave. In the process, I lost balance and offset a flower vase crashing it on the floor. Samuel and the worker jerked at once and turned around to look at me. Cold shivers ran down my spine as beats of sweat began to appear on my forehead.

“What are you still doing here?” Samuel asked, trying hard not to shrug.

I tried to gather up all the courage and composure in the world so that he would believe the lie I was about to tell him.

“I wanted to tell you something”. I mumbled, avoiding his gaze.

“And you couldn't do that without breaking things, how clumsy can you be?” He asked with a sneer.

“I'm sorry”. I muttered.

“Whenever. What do you want to say, because you can see I was busy”. He gestured to the workers beside him.

Of course, what I wanted to say wasn't difficult to cook up.

“Please, how is Mom fairing? I just want to know her current health. Is there any improvement?” I asked intently.

“Well, the medical professionals here are trying their best. Your mom's situation is very critical and it might still take some time to bring it under control”. Samuel explained.

I wasn't expecting him to be that nice.

“Alright, please try your best to save her”. I said.

“I will, as long as you stick to your own part of the deal”. He replied.

I nodded my head slowly and turned around to leave.

When I got to Adrian's house, all the cars were complete in the parking lot except the car that had broken down. That already gave me a heads-up that Adrian was inside. I opened the main entrance door and went inside; after thoroughly inspecting the living room and ensuring he wasn't there, I removed my shoes and began to tiptoe to my room. I already prepared my mind in case he showed up from nowhere, but fortunately for me, he didn't. I got to my room safely and collapsed on my bed, that was so much for one day.

************

The plane took off immediately Adrian and Marcus settled down; they were heading to California on a business trip.

“How has it been bro?” Marcus asked, adjusting his tie.

“You have no idea, Marcus. As a matter of fact, I didn't sign for this,” Adrian replied.

“I know right.” Marcus giggled.

Adrian shot him a cold stare and muttered.

“It's not funny”.

“I'm sorry bro”. Marcus said, behaving himself.

“Since she arrived, I have not had one moment of rest. It's always from one ordeal to another; the press is even making matters worse. That girl is a headache on her own, a bunch of trouble”.

“Are you sure? From the outside, she's this gentle lonely-looking young lady”. Marcus described.

“What the heck, bro? Are you falling for her?” Adrian asked.

“What! Hell no. Why would I?” Marcus exclaimed in bewilderment.

“Oh, I wouldn't mind, though. All I would do is hand her over to you when her contract period elapses”. Adrian replied with a smirk.

Marcus punched him playfully on the shoulder and they both laughed.

Meanwhile, I was over here sprawled on my bed as if I engaged in a marathon throughout the night. I glanced at the wall clock and it was already two hours to noon. I sluggishly dragged myself out of the bed and landed on the couch. What more would you expect from me? I mean, today was a rare day; I finally visited Mom yesterday, I also escaped going to the office with Adrian yesterday, Adrian went on a business trip earlier today to return in a few days which did not give me time to scold me for my insolence and lastly, I have the house all to myself. This was my description of a good day.

My stomach rumbled and I ran into the bathroom immediately to freshen up. I took a long shower, spending over 15 minutes lying in the bathtub. When I got out my nerves were cool. I proceeded to brush my teeth and apply some pomade. After that, I headed downstairs for breakfast. I had fries and sauce, just a perfect meal to start the day.

Later on, I went to Adrian's living room to watch TV for the first time. It felt a bit weird sitting on his sofa and handling the remote. I tuned into a Hollywood channel and relaxed to see the movie, not before I ordered popcorn to keep my mouth busy.

The movie was a very romantic one, just the way I loved it. The female lead character was super good in bed. I scoffed when I remembered I was the direct opposite of her. I don't even know how to kiss properly talk more take a man to clo

Suddenly my phone beeped and Adrian was the caller.

I had my drawing pad clutched up against my chest, its corners digging into my ribs, as I shouldered my bag of art supplies. The house was too quiet. My bedroom door creaked softly when I opened it, and I hesitated, holding my breath. When no one stirred, I exhaled and slipped out, stepping carefully down the big staircase. My socked feet were silent, but every creak of the old wooden railing was very loud in the quiet. And then I got down there, and I heard his voice—deep, firm, and familiar. Samuel. My stepfather."I don't want to hear excuses. Just finish it," he bellowed. His voice carried from the dining room, off the walls. I peeked around the corner at him, phone to his ear as he paced back and forth. His suit was perfect, just the light from the chandelier gleaming off his cufflinks. He looked very irritated.I was hoping he wouldn't notice me; I grabbed my bag and tried to make a run for the kitchen, but just like always, I was out of luck. My bag hit the corner of one of the

Adrian shut the heavy oak door to his office with a bang; the sound reverberated in the room. He frowned more as he ran a hand through his thick black hair, still thinking about the meeting he had just left. His jaw was tense as he walked to his desk, the heels of his shiny shoes clicking sharply on the floor."Adrian," a familiar voice said, bringing him out of his reverie. His grandmother's attorney, Tiller, stood by the window, his dark suit impeccable. Beside him, Marcus, Adrian's best friend and COO, leaned back casually against the armrest of one of the soft chairs, looking careful."What is it now, Tiller?" Adrian asked sharply as he sat down in his chair. His fingers began drumming on the wooden desk, evidence that he was impatient. "I thought we wrapped up my grandmother's estate months ago."Tiller, adjusting his glasses, stepped closer, carrying a nice leather briefcase. "Ordinarily, we would be, but something has risen that requires your prompt attention."Adrian raised an

This room was my safe haven, the only sanctuary in this big house where I found even a shred of peace. I sat cross-legged on the floor beside Mom's bed, moving chess pieces across the board I'd set up on the small table. Playing against myself wasn't as dull as it sounded-it just gave me something to focus on besides the quiet beeping of machines that kept my mother alive.Soft music flowed from the speaker; Sinatra's voice filled the dead air, low and smooth in his croon. The sound of my voice came as a whisper: "Fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars…"I looked at Mom, very still, pale, and serene in her features. "You always loved this song," I whispered, as if she were listening. "Remember? You used to hum it as you cooked breakfast."There was no answer. Never would there be an answer. Still, I continued talking, as if she may just respond. That way, it wasn't so hard to accept her silence.I moved another chess piece, then sat back, looking at the board. "I think white'

I wasn't able to sleep last night. Every time I would close my eyes, all I could see was his face: Samuel-cold, smug, making his demands from me. The sheets were wrapped around me from all the tossing and turning, like the heavy weight of my thoughts. How could this be happening? How had everything gone so wrong? The hours ticked by until finally morning light filtered through the curtains. I didn't feel rested. I didn't feel anything but that overwhelming knot in my stomach. I did need to get up, though. I needed to make myself do it. Samuel had made it crystal clear that today wasn't optional.I shuffled downstairs for breakfast, a cloud of depression hanging over me. Samuel was in the dining room; his usual smugness was replaced by an almost unsettling cheerfulness. It was as though pawning me off to some stranger for marriage was the highlight of his day.'Well, aren't you in a good mood? ' I thought bitterly, still picking at my food which I tried to force down. He was awfully jo

I felt the blood rise to my cheeks as Adrian's lips curled in a slight sneer in greeting. A simple "Hi." That's all I could get out-pathetic, even to my ears. Why couldn't I have been poised, collected? I didn't know this man, and yet somehow, I felt that with one greeting, I'd already let him down, myself down. And, well, a part of me wanted to say sorry for the awkwardness I couldn't shake, but I didn't. I took another step back, eyes flashing to the floor, hoping he didn't see how badly my hands shook.Samuel, blind to my discomfort or just enjoying it, smacked Adrian on the back and hustled him inside. His jovial tone sliced through the tension like a knife, and I followed behind, silently cursing myself for not being able to pull myself together. The living room stretched out before me, sterile and empty-the space feeling larger and colder than I remembered. The smell of freshly brewed coffee was hanging in the air, but it didn't help smooth my nerves. Nothing would now.I sat do

Samuel has done his worst. He sold me out of marriage to some billionaire today and in a few weeks, I will be taken away. How more devastating can my life be?”Just as expected, there was a dead silence when I finished talking. I maintained my position with tears still streaming down.Suddenly, the door flung open revealing Samuel; he had returned from seeing Adrian off. He leaned on the door frame staring at mum and I with contempt, his grey eyes piercing through me.“Thank your stars you didn't ruin the meeting with your lack of composure”. I finally resolved to look in between professional and casual.Dressed in a blue knee length gown, I went out of my room and headed downstairs but I stopped abruptly midway. I had to see my mother first, I hadn't spoken to her throughout yesterday.I turned around and headed for her room, turning the door knob clockwise to open the door. I saw a medical attendant trying to inject a yellowish substance into the drip bag. I gulped hard trying so much to avoid Samuels gaze, I could hear my heart pounding against my chest. I feigned clearing my throat in a quest to gather composure before I finally spoke.“I am sorry. The driver quickly alighted and beckoned me to come out of the car, I had to bulge, not as if I had a choice. I walked briskly to Adrian's car accompanied by his bouncers and bodyguards. Why exactly didn't he just ask me to use the other cars in his convoy? The backseat door was opened and I sat inside cautiously. I felt Adrian's gaze on me but I tried to avoid looking back at him.“My home is just a stone's throw from here; I can walk down there”. I muttered.“We are heading to the office; enough of this going home nonsense.” He replied firmly.“You can't do this to me. I really need to visit home, it's very important”. I cried.“Driver, move this car!” Adrian ordered ignoring my pleas.I sank back into the car seat frustrated. Why was he just so difficult? My tear glands were alerted and so on tears began trickling down my face. Adrian kept a straight face all through and refused to have a change of heart.Suddenly, our car pulled up again. I resolved that I wasn't capable of telling Adrian about Julian yet, so I went ahead to narrate the incident with the crowd, skillfully excluding Julian's ordeal. When I was done, I remained mute, hoping he would just take my word for it and not bombard me with questions. However, he heaved a loud sigh and muttered.“Julian”.I wasn't sure I heard him well and I couldn't help but ask.“What did you say?”He stood up and mumbled, “Never mind”.He walked past me and headed to his room. I wasn't expecting any reply initially so I shoved it aside and went to my room. I tried so much to take my mind off Adrian's issue with Julian, but the more I tried, the more I became interested. Maybe I would have successfully shoved it aside if Julian didn't drag me into the picture.I curled up on my bed as usual hoping sleep would come knocking because it was just a few hours to midnight. I slept off a few minutes later but jumped off my bed and landed on the floor suddenly. I had a dream about Mom a

She replied.“You know what, I will not be taking any of these items home. It's either you allow me to pay for them or I return them”. I said matter of factly.“No ma'am, please don't do that, you will be putting my job on the line”. The cashier replied with a pitiful voice.I heaved a sigh and stared at the lady intensely. Of course, I wouldn't do anything that would make her lose her job because I understand what it means to make money.Suddenly, as I was racking my brains for the next thing to do, a large crowd started to gather around me. Adrian's eyes widened in shock, he stood from where he sat and walked towards me. I could feel my heart pounding against my chest as I began developing cold feet. How on earth was I able to talk back to Adrian? How did I do it? As much as I know that he wasn't going to take it lightly with me, I do not regret it.He was close to me by now with his head high above mine. I fixed my gaze on the floor, looking at nothing in particular.“What did you say?” He asked slowly, I could feel his breath showering on my earlobe.“Nothing”. I replied in shutters. “I didn't say anything”.“Are you sure?”. He pressed further.“Yes”. I affirmed.“I thought as much”. He said and walked away.I heaved a loud sigh of relief and strode away silently. When I got to my room, I twisted the door knob clockwise and walked in. The first thing I did was to take off my clothes and walk under the shower. The stench of the hospital was glued to my body, and although I loved it, it had to go.After freshening up, I

One of them leaned on the wall opposite my bed while the other strode in my direction.“How are you feeling today ma'am?” He asked with no atom of emotion in his voice.I nodded in reply.“Your husband wants you to be discharged; he said you would receive the rest of the treatment at home.” He announced.“But I have not fully recovered; why would he give such an order,” I asked at the top of my voice.“That's the same thing I said ma'am. The doctor will be coming to treat you at home”. He explained.“No!” I yelled, making the bouncers jerk. “I don't want to go home; I still need this hospital environment to facilitate my recovery.” I shrugged.Meanwhile, the bouncer who was leaning on t

Adrian replied with a smirk. “So if you knew you were able to use your damn legs after all, why did you write me a note?”I didn't know what to say so I remained silent.“Answer me!” He yelled at once, making shivers run down my spine.I just stood there mute and visibly shaken.“I think I know why”. He said, touching his jaw. “Because I consented to your fucking request with a note, that gave you the guts to do the same”.Now I realized this man was very insane. Why would he have any problem with me writing him a note?“I'm sorry if you're offended. But I need a response”. I replied slowly with my head bowed.“What exactly do you want”. He said, rolling his eyes as if he didn't get the message from the note.“I need some money to change my wardrobe”. I replied.I hated the fact that I was standing in front of a man asking for money. Since I got married to Adrian, no family member has come to visit, and Adrian never introduced me to any. How did he get my contact?“Please answer my question; you are Adrian's wife, right?” He pressed.“Yes”. I muttered.“And your name is Jenny right?” he asked again, stressing the “Jenny” word.“Yes, I am”. I replied visibly annoyed.“It's nice meeting you…….“Please who are you?” I asked with furrowed brows, interrupting him.“I am Julian Sterling by name, Adrian's cousin”. He explained.“Okay.
